Twitter threatens legal action against Meta's Threads, unraveling battle for social media supremacy

There is visible excitement amongst the fans and tech enthusiasts about the newly-launched Threads app by Meta.

More than 10 hours after its launch, over 14 million people have downloaded the social media app, widely pegged to rival Elon Musk’s Twitter.

But the topic of discussion, especially in India’s southern part, centred around the app’s logo, as many netizens found it to be eerily similar to Dravidian languages Tamil and Malayalam.

While some found it to be resembling the Tamil alphabet letter ‘Ku’, others argued that the logo resembles Malayalam letters ‘Thr’ and ‘Kra’.

There were others who claimed that logo resembles the Hindi letter Om— a sacred sound and syllable and an invocation in Hinduism.

Some even made sardonic remarks claiming that the app’s logo looked like the Indian confectionery jalebi.

Dubbed the “Twitter-killer”, Meta launched another social media app for those who want to opt out of Elon Musk’s Twitter.

The new social media app is based on Instagram’s account system and allows people to discuss everything.

The application's description reads, “Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what'll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you're interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favourite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.”

On Threads, users can create text-based posts with up to 500 characters and share photos and videos up to five minutes long.

Meta has extended some of Instagram’s privacy controls to Threads as well, such as the ability to filter out certain words in replies.

“We believe this decentralized approach, similar to the protocols governing email and the web itself, will play an important role in the future of online platforms,” Meta says.

Meta’s Threads app logo looks similar to Tamil letter? Here’s what netizens have to say

The dawn of Instagram-linked Threads is being seen as threatening the social media heft created, moderated and expanded by the blue bird of Twitter that for years, has tweeted its way into 'global town square' of news, events, moments and opinions consisting of hundreds of millions worldwide.

Responding to a question on whether Threads can become bigger than Twitter, Zuckerberg said, "It will take some time, but I think there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion+ people on it. Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn't nailed it. Hopefully, we will."

Mark Zuckerberg’s Threads pitch of pushing it as a platform that has “the best parts of Instagram” towards “a new experience” makes it an uneasy appeal for Twitter’s loyal user base.

The missing line in the ruling of Meta's Threads page is that a person conventionally does not follow the same set of people on Twitter as they do on Instagram. Explained: Threat of Threads? How Meta's version of Twitter is not new at all

Have you heard about Threads? It is Meta's new app which is expected to a give serious competition to an extremely popular rival app. Which one? This report tells you.

Gravitas: Threads: All about Meta's new app

In the latest development of the ongoing rivalry between tech giants Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has confirmed the release date of its new text-based conversation app called Threads. The app, which has been dubbed Instagram's answer to Twitter, is set to launch on Thursday, July 6, according to a listing on Apple's App Store. Users will have the ability to follow the same accounts they follow on the popular photo-sharing platform while keeping their existing usernames.

This announcement has further fueled the competition between Meta's Chief Mark Zuckerberg, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who owns the microblogging platform Twitter. Reacting to the news, Musk took a dig at Meta Platforms, stating, 'Thank goodness they're so sanely run.'

NDTV cited Meta's Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, who referred to Threads as their response to Twitter during a recent company-wide meeting discussing the app. Cox mentioned that creators and public figures had expressed a desire for a sanely run platform, taking a dig at Twitter's management under Musk's leadership.

A Twitter user took to the platform to provide insights into Meta's upcoming app, describing Threads as a competitor to Twitter. The user speculated that the term 'sanely run' used by Meta could imply that the app may collect extensive user data, a characteristic Meta has been associated with in the past. However, the user expressed support for Musk's vision for 'Twitter 2.0,' emphasising his belief that Musk champions freedom of speech compared to Zuckerberg's track record. Additionally, the user anticipated Musk's preparation for the rivalry and declared allegiance to 'team Twitter.'

Reacting to the news, Musk took a dig at Meta Platforms, stating, 'Thank goodness they're so sanely run.' NDTV cited Meta's Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, who referred to Threads as their response to Twitter during a recent company-wide meeting discussing the app. Additionally, the user anticipated Musk's preparation for the rivalry and declared allegiance to 'team Twitter.' 🚨BREAKING: META's Answer to Twitter (Threads) Release Date CONFIRMED 'Threads' will be released on Thursday in the U.S. The app has been described as a competitor to Twitter. Twitter vs Threads: Musk takes a dig at Meta's upcoming app

Instagram's potential rival to Twitter has been released on the iOS App Store in the United States. The app, named Threads, is expected to launch officially on July 6, as reported by several media outlets.

This is a strategic move for Instagram, as its competitors, such as Spill, Bluesky, and Post, experienced significant growth over the weekend due to Twitter's rate-limit errors.

However, Threads has an advantage since it directly imports your Instagram followers and the accounts you follow. Instead of starting from scratch, Threads users will already have their existing Instagram community available.

According to the description on the App Store, Threads is a platform where communities can gather to discuss a wide range of topics. Users can follow and connect with their favourite creators and others who share the same interests. Alternatively, users can build their own following and share their ideas, opinions, and creativity with the world.

Features of the ‘Threads’ app

Although Threads is closely connected to Instagram, it functions as a separate app. Limited information is available from the App Store listing alone, but it appears that users can like, comment, repost, and share posts.

The screenshots on the App Store also suggest that users can choose the audience who can reply to their posts, including everyone, people they follow, or only those mentioned in the post.

Threads, a ‘decentralised’ app

The announcement of Threads doesn't come as a surprise since details about the app have been gradually leaking over the past few months. According to an Instagram spokesperson quoted by Money Control, Threads is described as "decentralised."

Leaked slides from a briefing with top creators indicate that Threads will be compatible with Mastodon, a decentralised network hosted on ActivityPub. However, the compatibility with Instagram, a centralised app, raises some questions that remain to be clarified.

Previous failed ventures of Meta

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has had mixed success with its side apps in the past. Some of their previous ventures, such as the anonymous teen app tbh, the Cameo-like app Super, and others, have been discontinued.

Nevertheless, Threads is launching at an opportune moment to take advantage of Twitter's ongoing issues. Ultimately, it will be up to consumers to decide if they want Meta to dominate yet another aspect of their social media experience.

Instagram’s Twitter-like app ‘Threads’ to be launched this week

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is preparing to launch a new standalone app in response to Twitter. The app, internally known as Project 92 and rumoured to be named Threads after its release, will be launched through Instagram. During a company-wide meeting led by Meta's chief product officer, Chris Cox, the upcoming app was demonstrated as "our response to Twitter."

Cox took a jab at Twitter CEO Elon Musk, stating that the rival app would be "sanely run" and emphasised the importance of creating a platform that is trustworthy and reliable.

High-profile users already committed to using the app: Meta

The goal of the app, which has been in development since January, is to provide creators with a stable place to build and grow their audiences, while prioritising safety, ease of use, and reliability.

Cox also highlighted that several notable figures, including Oprah, the Dalai Lama, and DJ Slime, have already committed to using the app. Meta plans to make the app available as soon as possible.

What is Project 92?

Project 92 reportedly integrates with Instagram's account system to automatically populate users' information and utilises ActivityPub to enable users to take their accounts and followers with them to other apps supported by the decentralized social networking protocol.

This integration makes the app decentralised, similar to Twitter rival Mastodon, which launched earlier this year.

Will Meta defeat Twitter?

One advantage that Meta's upcoming app may have over Twitter is its alliance with Instagram. With over 1 billion users, Instagram's vast user base could potentially boost the reach of the new app.

In contrast, Twitter has faced controversy and challenges since Musk bought it and took over as CEO, including a significant drop in revenue amid reports of advertisers abandoning the platform due to issues such as hate speech content.
