After a first-round exit at the Australian Open Osaka held a match point against Iga Swiatek in the second round at the French Open, eventually falling in three sets to the world number one.

A quick second-round exit at Wimbledon was followed by a first-round defeat at the Paris Olympics.

After a defeat in qualifying for the WTA hardcourt tournament in Cincinnati Osaka wrote on social media that "I don't feel like I'm in my body".

"I just felt like I wasn't able to hit the shots that I know I can hit," Osaka explained. "That was the most frustrating thing because I felt like I couldn't control the balls the way I wanted to."

Nevertheless, Osaka said Saturday that flashes of her old form throughout her 2024 campaign have left her "a little shocked sometimes at how well the play is.

World number one Jannik Sinner is "honest to the core" and is an "innocent victim" his coach Darren Cahill said after the Italian was cleared of any wrongdoing despite twice testing positive for a banned substance. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said on Tuesday that Sinner had provided an in-competition sample at the Indian Wells Masters on March 10 which contained the presence of clostebol at low levels.

A further sample, conducted eight days later out of competition, also tested positive for low levels of the same metabolite. Sinner had explained that the substance had originated from a spray, containing clostebol, that had been used by a member of his staff to treat a cut finger.

The ITIA accepted the explanation and said the "presence of the substance was not intentional". Cahill told ESPN in a television interview that the staff member in question was physio Giacomo Naldi who had been provided the over-the-counter spray from physical trainer Umberto Ferrara.

The Australian coach said it was not clear exactly how Naldi had provided the contamination to Sinner but suggested "working on the feet, a massage or whatever it may be".

Cahill said there was no question at all of Sinner seeking to gain advantage through use of a banned substance. "We're not looking for any sorrow or anything because we're quite thankful that there is no ban attached. But I just want to stress that he's a great kid. He's incredibly professional," he said.&nbsp;

"He's maybe the most professional young man that I've ever had the chance to work with. He would never, ever intentionally do anything. He's just in a situation which is incredibly unfortunate. The ITIA, an independent body established in 2021 by the governing bodies of the sport, said it had consulted experts who concluded Sinner's explanation was credible and therefore it did not oppose his appeals to lift the provisional suspensions. 

Former doubles British number one Tara Moore, who was sidelined for 19 months for failing a drug test before being cleared last year, took to social media to point out the contrast between how her case and Sinner's had been handles.

"I guess only the top players' images matter," Moore wrote. "I guess only the independent tribunal's opinion on the top players is taken as sound and right. Yet, they question them in my case. Just makes no sense."

Former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep was provisionally suspended in October 2022 and later banned for four years for two separate anti-doping rule violations. It was reduced to nine months in March, however, following an appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), which was established by Novak Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil in 2020, said there had to be consistency in the system.

"Players winning anti-doping violation appeals is generally good," said Ahmad Nassar, an executive director of the player advocacy group. "But we have to have clear, consistent processes for all players. Whether ranked one, 100 or 1,000; whether man or woman. And no matter what region of the world they may call home.

"The absence of a clear and consistent system creates obvious problems for players who are not the perceived ranking, gender and/or nationality of choice. The absence also undermines the tennis establishment's credibility with fans and media."

Tuesday's decision is still subject to potential appeals by the World Anti-Doping Agency or the Italian Anti-Doping Agency.

"ITIA today confirms that an independent tribunal convened by Sport Resolutions has ruled that Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner bears No Fault or Negligence for two Anti-Doping Rule Violations under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP)," said the agency in a statement on Tuesday.

"The player explained that the substance had entered their system as a result of contamination from a support team member, who had been applying an over-the-counter spray (available in Italy) containing clostebol to their own skin to treat a small wound."

The ITIA added that the support team member in question had applied the spray between March 5-13 during which time they also provided daily massages and sports therapy to Sinner, which resulted in the contamination.

While the 23-year-old Italian has been cleared of any wrongdoing, he will be stripped of his results, prize money and ranking points from Indian Wells, in accordance with the anti-doping rules in force.

As&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;trudged off alongside the man who has replaced him as a force in tennis, it felt like the end as fans snapped photos on their phones.

"For me personally it was disappointing to not bring back a medal for Spain,"&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;said. "I tried my best in every single minute I was on court but it was not enough. "I don't know what's going to happen in the future, but if that's the last time I enjoyed it."

Krajicek said it had been special to be part of the atmosphere, even if he played a huge role in ruining the script. "To be in that kind of environment. You've got to soak it all in," he said. "I mean, the energy was through the roof."

"To be in that kind of environment. You've got to soak it all in," he said. "I mean, the energy was through the roof." In truth Nadal and Alcaraz could have few complaints as they came up against a well-drilled partnership with the 40-year-old Ram, a four-times Grand Slam men's doubles champion, superb throughout with razor-sharp net play.
