<p>With a low-pressure area off Andamans expected to intensify into Cyclone ‘Yaas’ after the weekend, the Indian Coast Guard(ICG) has already swung into action.</p>

<p>Coast Guard assets on sea, air and land are relaying alert messages in English and Indian languages to alert merchant vessels, fishing vessels, and other vessels across the length of India’s East Coast - from Tamil Nadu to West Bengal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Coast Guard Disaster Relief Teams (DRTs) with inflatable boats, life buoys and lifejackets are standby for undertaking Disaster response operations. Medical teams and&nbsp;ambulances have also been kept standby for swift mobilisation.</p>

<p>Besides closely monitoring the weather system, alerting vessels at sea, the ICG is also alerting anchored vessels to adopt adequate safety measures.</p>

<p>“Navtex warnings are being issued regularly and International safety Net (ISN) has been activated to alert the vessels in/ transiting through area. Port authorities, oil rig operators, shipping, fisheries authorities and fishermen associations have been informed about the likelihood of cyclone formation and a close liaison and coordination for safety of boats, vessels and fixed platforms is being maintained” said the statement from the ICG.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite the fishing ban being in-force across India’s east coast, the ICG ’s aircraft and ships are broadcasting information asking fishermen to return to shore.&nbsp;&nbsp;ICG has also requested respective State/ UT governments to sensitize fishers and carry out accounting of fishing boats present in harbour and maintan a close liaison.</p>

<p>As per IMD forecast, a low pressure area is very likely to form over North Andaman Sea and adjoining East Central Bay of Bengal around May 22. It is very likely to intensify into a Cyclonic storm in next 72 hours.</p>

<p>It is predicted to move North-westwards and reach Odisha - West Bengal coasts around 26 May 21 evening. The system will be named 'Yaas' once it develops into a&nbsp;cyclone.&nbsp;Cyclones that form in India’s East Coast have an impact across states and Union territories such as Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar islands, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The prime minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured in the cyclone across Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and the Union Territory of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, it said.</p>

<p>After arrival from Delhi at Bhavnagar airport, Modi, accompanied by Rupani, boarded a helicopter and conducted an aerial survey of affected areas in Gujarat and adjoining Union Territory of Diu to assess the damage.</p>

<p>The survey covered the Una taluka of Gir-Somnath district, Mahuva taluka of Bhavnagar and Jafrabad taluka of Amreli district besides Diu, the PIB release said.</p>

<p>Later, he chaired a meeting at the Ahmedabad Airport "to review the relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken in Gujarat and Diu", said the release.</p>

<p>Chief minister Rupani and state Chief Secretary Anil Mukim were also present at the meeting.</p>

<p>The cyclone, which made landfall between Diu and Una town of Gir-Somnath district on Monday night after barrelling along India's west coast, left a trail of devastation.</p>

<p>He also took stock of the coronavirus pandemic situation in the state and stressed the need to ensure that preventive measures are also taken, the release said.</p>

<p>The PM expressed complete solidarity with all those who suffered due to the cyclone in different parts of the country and expressed deep sorrow to the families who have lost their kin during the calamity, it added.</p>

<p>It is expected to make landfall in coastal Gujarat early Tuesday, bringing wind speeds of around 155-165 kilometres per hour (96-102 miles per hour) gusting up to 185 kilometres per hour, the weather bureau added.</p>

<p>Thousands of disaster response personnel had been deployed to the states, while units from the coast guard, navy, army and air force had been placed on standby, Home Minister Amit Shah said in a statement.</p>

<p>Four people lost their lives on Saturday as torrential rain and winds battered Karnataka state, the disaster management authority said Sunday.</p>

<p>Several towns and villages were flooded and properties damaged, officials added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two people died in the resort state of Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said Sunday, adding that power supply had been disrupted while some 200 houses were damaged, roads were blocked and trees uprooted.</p>

<p>Two others were reported dead and 23 fishermen were feared missing in Kerala, local media said.</p>

<p>More than 150,000 people are set to be evacuated from coastal districts in Gujarat, where the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination rollout will be suspended on Monday and Tuesday, the state government said.</p>

<p>The meteorological department has warned of storm surges of up to three metres high (9.8 feet) in some coastal districts of Gujarat.</p>

<p>Hospitals with coronavirus patients in the affected districts were also backing up their power supply, local district development officer Varunkumar Baranwal told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Oxygen and power supply to hospitals in the state would be uninterrupted, Maharashtra said, while hundreds of virus patients will be moved from field hospitals.</p>

<p>India is already battling a deadly wave of infections that has pushed its healthcare system to breaking point, leading to severe shortages of hospital beds, oxygen and medicines.</p>

<p>The vast nation of 1.3 billion people reported just over 311,170 new infections on Sunday, taking the total tally to nearly 24.7 million.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The death toll rose to more than 270,000 after 4,077 deaths were officially recorded over the past 24 hours. Experts say the actual toll could be significantly higher.</p>

<p>Last May, more than 110 people died after the "super cyclone" Amphan ravaged eastern India and Bangladesh, flattening villages, destroying farms and leaving millions without electricity.</p>

<p>The IMD had also informed the BMC that Mumbai is not in the direct line of the threat of the cyclone. However, as it will pass through the sea near the Mumbai coast, its effect is likely to be accompanied by rain and strong winds.&nbsp;</p>

The 24 ward officers have been told to be ready with manpower and equipment and prepare shelter homes in case people living near low-lying areas need to be relocated, the official said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The cyclone is likely to move north-northwestwards and cross the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Naliya around May 18 with wind speed gusting up to 175 kmph, the IMD said.&nbsp;</p>
