Meanwhile, Taiwan's deputy coast guard chief Hsieh Ching-chin said the boat was seized within China's territorial waters, in an area where Beijing has declared a seasonal fishing ban between May 1 to August 15.

"We hope that the Chinese side will tell us as soon as possible the reason of the inspection," he said.

"We will actively request the Chinese side to release the boat and its crew as soon as possible through various channels".

Taiwan Navy on Wednesday (Jul 3) will welcome two more Tuo Jiang-class stealth missile corvettes to boost its deterrence capabilities. Dubbed as 'carrier killers,' An Jiang and Wan Jiang will help enhance Taiwan's asymmetric warfare capabilities in the face of increasing threats from China's People's Liberation Army (PLA). Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (SCMP) quoted a military source as saying that both ships, indigenously-built, have completed their combat training.

“An Jiang and Wan Jiang have completed their combat training and will be officially enlisted by the navy on Wednesday to safeguard our waters,” the source said.

Tuo Jiang-class stealth missile corvettes are fast, small and agile ships. Four of such ships have already been commissioned in the Navy, along with a prototype commissioned in 2015.

The four ships that have already been commissioned are: Ta Jiang, Fu Jiang, Hsu Jiang and Wu Jiang.

“The second batch of five more corvettes is expected to be completed and delivered by the end of 2026,” the source said.

<h2>Features of Tuo Jiang-class stealth missile corvettes</h2>

Just 60.4 metres long and 14 metres wide, these ships have a wave-piercing catamaran design. With a maximum speed of 83 kmph, they have an operational range of 1,800 nautical miles.

The ships are armed with Hsiung Feng II and III anti-ship missiles and can attack enemy targets on land or sea. They are also equipped with 76mm cannons, Phalanx close-in weapon systems and T74 machine guns.
