Taiwan's minister of foreign affairs Lin Chia-lung has called for Taiwan's inclusion in the United Nations (UN) system to ensure peace in the Indo-Pacific, according to an op-ed published in South Korea's Chosun Ilbo.&nbsp;

In the op-ed, Taiwan's minister Lin underscored China's intentional distortion of UN Resolution 2758 by linking it with its "One China" principle.&nbsp;

China has been suppressing Taiwan's right to participate in the UN and its affiliated organizations, he added.&nbsp;

“The UN should reclaim the proper interpretation of UN Resolution 2758 to maintain international peace and security as stipulated in the UN Charter and find ways to combat China’s aggressive ambitions," Lin said.&nbsp;

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence (MND) has tracked 13 Chinese military aircraft, eight naval vessels and two official ships operating around Taiwan from 6 am (local time) on Tuesday to 6 am (local time) on Wednesday.

Taking to X, Taiwan's MND stated, "13 PLA aircraft, 8 PLAN vessels and 2 official ships operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 7 of the aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's southwestern and eastern ADIZ. We have monitored the situation and responded accordingly."

Since September 2020, China has intensified its use of gray zone tactics by increasing the number of military aircraft and naval vessels operating near Taiwan, according to a Taiwan News report.

It further prompted the Taiwan army to order 1,985 more Stringer missiles from the US for approximately NT$55.54 billion, Taiwanese local newspaper Liberty Times reported.&nbsp;

According to the MND's 2025 budget report, the Army will get 549 launch systems and 549 identification and friend of foe (IFF) systems.&nbsp;

But China is speeding up the development of a slew of new weapons, such as the H-20 bomber and hypersonic missiles and beefing up the number of nuclear warheads&nbsp;while trialling new tactics, the ministry said.

The report said that in May when China staged war games around Taiwan shortly after Lai Ching-te took office as the new president, Chinese coast guard ships were sent for the first time on interception and inspection drills off the east coast.

China's aim with the drills was to practice cutting off communication with the outside world and blockade Taiwan, and boarding foreign cargo ships is an option China could take, short of open conflict, the ministry said.

At a regular news briefing in Beijing on Thursday, the ministry said that as long as Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party "engages in 'Taiwan independence' (efforts), there will be no peace".

"The more they provoke, the faster they will perish," spokesperson Wu Qian told reporters.

Taiwan's proposed defence spending will rise faster than expected economic growth next year, as Taipei builds more missiles, submarines and other weapons to deter China.
