<p>Syrian farmer Izzadin Zuhaira, whose orchards turned into ash, told Reuters, "I've never seen any weather like this. The soil and the trees were so impacted by the heat that they lit up quickly."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zuhaira had been living off the harvests of around 700 olive, pomegranate and walnut trees, but all of these were destroyed by the spreading fire. His one-storey farmhouse, which has already been damaged by years of war, was further damaged by the February earthquake.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The blast took place south of Damascus just before the annual commemoration of Ashura, a time when the death of Prophet Mohammed's grandson Imam Hussein in the seventh-century battle is mourned by the Shiites.</p>

<p>Six deaths were recorded by the interior ministry, state news agency SANA reported, revising an earlier toll of five.</p>

<p>More than 20 people were wounded in the attack which the interior ministry said was a "terrorist bombing".</p>

<p>"We heard a huge blast and people began to run," said 39-year-old civil servant Ibrahim, while speaking to AFP. "Then ambulances arrived and security forces cordoned off the area," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He stated that the explosion took place "near a security building around 600 metres (yards) from the mausoleum of Sayeda Zeinab", who was Prophet Mohammed's granddaughter and the daughter of Imam Ali, a founding figure of Shiite Islam.</p>

<p>Security measures were tightened by the authorities around the mausoleum for the commemoration of the 10-day Ashura, the most important in Shiite Islam.</p>

<p>On Tuesday (July 25), an explosion took place in a car in the same area in which two civilians were wounded, a security official was quoted as saying by the official media.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the civil war of the country which erupted in 2011, the Sayeda Zeinab mausoleum was hit by several deadly bombings. Since then the mosque complex, featuring a gold dome and turquoise ceramics in the Iranian style, has been defended by Shiite militiamen, mostly Iraqi and Lebanese along with the army.</p>

<p>United States on Tuesday (July 25) claimed that the Russian fighter jets fired flares at an American MQ-9 Reaper drone while flying over Syria.</p>

<p>The incident happened on Sunday (July 25) when it was on a counter-terrorism mission against the Islamic State group, US Air Forces Central said.</p>

<p>"On 23 July, 2023 at 12:23 a.m. (EST) Russian fighter aircraft flew dangerously close to a U.S. MQ-9 drone on a defeat-ISIS mission, harassing the MQ-9 and deploying flares from a position directly overhead, with only a few meters of separation between aircraft," Air Forces Central Commander Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich said.</p>

<p>The drone’s propeller suffered “serious” damages, the air force said.</p>

<h2><strong>US calls upon Russia to exercise restraint&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>“The Sukhoi Su-35 began dropping flares in front of the US drone, severely damaging its propellor, the Air Force said. The drone’s crew was able to control the aircraft and fly it back to its home base,” Grynkewich said in a statement</p>

<p>The US Air Force called upon the Russian forces in Syria “to put an immediate end to this reckless, unprovoked, and unprofessional behaviour.”</p>

<p>There have been increasingly close encounters between the Russian fighter jets and US drones operating over Syria.</p>

<p>This is the second time this month that US and Russian jets have come in close proximity in the Syrian air.</p>

<p>The increased confrontation between the countries in the Syrian skies can be attributed to the presence of their militaries&nbsp;in the North African region.</p>

<p>While the US has around 900 troops in eastern Syria fighting against the IS terrorist group, Russia has a military presence in northwestern Syria as part of its mission to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.</p>

<p>“It’s a sad moment for the Syrian people.&nbsp;What we have just witnessed, what the world has just witnessed, was an act of utter cruelty," said&nbsp;Linda Thomas-Greenfield,&nbsp;the US ambassador to the UN.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Russia owns this failure. And it’s up to them to come to the negotiating table in good faith. The United States will continue to work with all Council members to renew the cross-border mechanism," she added.</p>

<p>A statement was issued on Wednesday by Lieutenant General Alexus G. Grynkewich, commander of the Ninth Air Force. Three MQ-9 Reaper drones were engaged by three Russian fighter jets "in actions that violate established norms and protocols," said the statement, as quoted by Reuters.</p>

<p>"These events represent another example of unprofessional and unsafe actions by Russian air force&nbsp;operating in Syria, which threaten the safety of both US and Russian forces," Grynkewich said, calling on Moscow to "cease this reckless behaviour."</p>

<p>The Pentagon had released a video in March depicting&nbsp;a collision between a Russian fighter jet and a US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper drone in international airspace. The collision had caused the drone to crash into the Black Sea.</p>

<p>The MQ-9 Reaper drone, which is primarily deployed for intelligence gathering, can be armed with up to eight laser-guided Hellfire missiles, underscoring the risk of these confrontations.</p>

<p>An official of the United Nations visited Syria's Idlib on Tuesday and urged a 12-month extension of a cross-border aid mechanism to rebel-held, quake-hit region. The appeal has come just days before the current six-month arrangement is due to expire.</p>

<p>"There is no substitute in size and scope to the UN cross-border resolution if we want to meet the needs of the most vulnerable people in northwest Syria," said David Carden, the United Nations deputy regional humanitarian coordinator for the Syria crisis.</p>

<p>"It's a joint message that you're hearing from the UN, the NGOs and the communities themselves in northwest Syria about the need for a 12-month renewal of the cross-border resolution," he told a press conference at a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse in Sarmada.</p>

<p>The mechanism is renewed by a vote of the Security Council. It allows vital UN assistance to reach people living in rebel-held northwest Syria without navigating areas controlled by government forces.</p>

<p>It was renewed in January and is set to expire on July 10.</p>

<p>Carden underlined the need for a 12-month extension and said such an extension will "ensure that aid will continue to flow during the desperate winter months. It will ensure that early recovery programmes can be implemented."</p>

<p>According to a report by Saudi Arabia TV news channel Al-Hadath, last week, Russian military police allegedly arrested the head of the Wagner unit in As Suwayda, southern Syria and three “high-ranking commanders” at the Khmeimim Air Base.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The media report also alleged that it was a joint raid conducted by Russian military police and Syrian intelligence who also launched an arrest campaign against the Wagner group in Syria, on Friday evening (June 23). On the same day, Prigozhin’s armed forces declared to have gained control over the Russian city and marched towards Moscow.</p>

<p>Earlier this year, Assad also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin and said that he supported Russia’s war in Ukraine and recognises territories claimed by Russia in Ukraine. Syria would also welcome more Russian forces and new military bases which need not be temporary, the Syrian president told the Russian media.</p>

<h2><strong>Wagner leaders, fighters in Syria arrested?</strong></h2>

<p>Al-Hadath also reported that Wagner leaders, including recruiters and fighters, were rounded up amid raids in the three previously mentioned cities and Russian forces allegedly arrested three Wagner officers, one of whom is a lieutenant colonel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Media reports citing Telegram channels close to Wagner have since denied the reports of detention but did not deny reports of its offices being raided. Reports about the detention of fighters in Syria were “not true,” said a Telegram channel named ‘Orchestra Wagner’ which is said to be linked to the paramilitary group.&nbsp;</p>
