Speaking to WION, Prabhu said climate change, energy and environment will be India's major highlight in the summit. Besides this, the summit will also discuss on ensuring no safe havens to the economic offenders and holders of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/the-black-money-battle-how-india-plans-to-nab-economic-offenders-204394">black money</a>.

Suresh Prabhu said, "We are keen that the economic offenders and those who are the perpetrators of economic crime, holders of black money should be brought to book. Those are running away from India should be brought back and no country should provide them shelter."

"We are very keen, economic growth should happen on a faster basis, and support should come from all global community. Climate change, energy, environment are very important issues. Global community should join to create a world-class infrastructure that should be quality in nature. So we are working on all these issues, " he added.

Answering a question on protectionism, Prabhu said global trade should be free from any restrictions and added that multilateral should be followed with respect to World Trade Organisation.

"India is of the strong view that global trade should be free from any restrictions. Multilateral should prevail, it should happen under WTO. Reforming WTO is necessary but it should happen in a way that all the countries in the world should have the right to decide. WTO should be forum for growth, equity and inclusiveness," he added.

Within hours of the announcement, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/air-india-scripts-new-era-in-fuel-conservation-no-additional-fuel-214568">Air India</a> on Tuesday put on hold the appointment of senior official Arvind Kathpalia, whose flying licence was suspended in November last year, as regional director of the northern region.

The flying licence of Kathpalia, who had served as director operations, was suspended after he failed pre-flight alcohol tests.

"Capt. Arvind Kathpalia will take over the charge of the post of Regional Director (Northern Region) with effect from May 1, 2019", consequent to the retirement of incumbent Pankaj Kumar, Air India said in an order.

In a flip-flop, the airline issued another order saying that the appointment has been kept in abeyance till further orders.

Sources in the civil aviation ministry said Air India decided to keep the appointment order in abeyance following directions from Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu.

Soon after the issuance of the appointment order, which drew flak from pilots' body ICPA, an Air India spokesperson issued a statement saying that the appointment of Kathpalia as director of northern region was "according to law".

The position of regional director is equivalent to executive director, a post he held earlier, the spokesperson had said.

The Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA), which represents pilots flying Air India's narrow body aircraft, "strongly" condemned the appointment.

"Top officials are bending backwards to elevate a tainted official. He's been made in-charge of NR (Northern Region) where he will be able to intimidate people who had given statements in police enquiry. Disciplinary action against commanders come under Regional Director-NR. It's ethically wrong," it said in a statement.

A person who has broken the law and has charge sheet pending against him cannot take disciplinary action against other employees, the statement added.

On November 11 last year, Kathpalia tested positive for alcohol in two breath analyser (BA) tests before he was to fly Air India's New Delhi-London flight.

The next day, aviation regulator DGCA suspended his flying licence for three years, and on November 13, the ministry issued an order removing him from the position of director of operations.

A week later, he was posted as an executive director by Air India.

In February 2017, when Kathpalia was working at the position of executive director of operations, his flying licence was suspended for three months on charges of skipping a pre-flight alcohol test.

After being removed from the post of executive director of operations, in March 2018, he was appointed as director of operations.

Rule 24 of the Aircraft Rules prohibits crew members from partaking any alcoholic drink 12 hours prior to the commencement of a flight, and it is mandatory for him/her to undergo an alcohol test both before and after operating a flight.

According to industry sources, the airline now owes more than Rs 3,500 crore to passengers on account of flight cancellations alone.

Jet Airways promoter and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/naresh-goyal-may-submit-bids-for-stake-in-jet-airways-209515">former chairman Naresh Goyal</a> along with his wife Anita quit the airline on March 25.

India has attained anti-satellite capability, becoming the fourth such country after the US, China and Russia, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Wednesday.

The mission was completed within three minutes when a pre-determined target satellite some 300 km away in the sky was destroyed using a complicated space manoeuvre, Modi said in a nationally televised speech.

Calling it "Mission Shakti", the Prime Minister said it did not violate any international law.

His address to the nation was widely hailed on social media.

"#MissionShakti is special for 2 reasons: (1) India is only the 4th country to acquire such a specialised &amp; modern capability. (2) Entire effort is indigenous. India stands tall as a space power! It will make India stronger, even more secure and will further peace and harmony," PM Modi posted on his Twitter handle after the address.

India's main Opposition party, the Congress, congratulated the country's space scientists for the feat.

"We congratulate @isro &amp; the Govt on the latest achievement for India. The Indian Space Programme established in 1961 by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru &amp; the Indian Space Research Organisation set up under Smt. Mission Shakti: Giant leap for India, say leaders

As per the direction of Minister for Civil Aviation Shri Suresh Prabhu, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reviewed the performance of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/jet-airways-pilots-threaten-to-stop-flying-from-april-1-204355">Jet Airways</a> on operational, airworthiness and passenger facilitation today.&nbsp;

Current availability of aircraft in the fleet for operation is 41 and accordingly scheduled for 603 domestic flights and 382 international flights have been drawn. However, it is a dynamic situation and there may be further attrition in the coming weeks. &nbsp;

DGCA instructed them to comply with relevant provisions of applicable CARs for facilitation of passengers regarding timely communication, compensation and providing alternate flights.

The data is being monitored by DGCA on a regular basis. They are also ensuring that all aircraft in the fleet whether in operation or on the ground are maintained in accordance with Approved Maintenance Programme (AMP).

Jet Airways was also directed to ensure that no Pilots/Cabin Crew/AMEs should be rostered on duty who had reported stress of any nature.&nbsp;

Union Commerce and Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu Saturday said India has the potential to be a $5 trillion economy in the next 7-8 years.

Addressing a seminar on exports at Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit here, Prabhu said his department had prepared a road map to make this possible by focusing on manufacturing, service sector and agriculture.

"India has a potential to be a $5 trillion economy in 7 to 8 years, and definitely a $10 trillion economy before 2035," Prabhu said.

"Manufacturing should lead to export. This will bring quality and competitiveness. Our cumulative export stands at around half a trillion dollars. The challenge is to double it" he said.

"Today, we have great opportunity to increase exports. There are disruptions taking place in the world and India should take advantage of it," he added.

Prabhu said India can increase exports to Africa and Latin American countries.

To boost air connectivity in the country, Prabhu said 100 new airports will come up in the near future with a cumulative investment of $65 billion.

Two MoUs were Saturday signed between the Gujarat government and Airports Authority of India for establishing greenfield airports at Dholera and Ankleshwar.

The MOUs were inked in the presence of Prabhu and Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani.

As per one MoU, Dholera airport will be established at a cost of Rs 1,500 crore.

The other MoU was for the development and operation of the airport and MRO at Ankleshwar.&nbsp;

The government wants to focus on the districts as part of a bottom-up approach for boosting growth, industry minister Suresh Prabhu said here Saturday.

The idea is to focus on one district at a time and increase its GDP growth by 3-4 percentage points annually, which will help increase the national GDP, the minister said speaking at an Association of National Exchanges Members of India event here.

Accordingly, the government has identified six districts, mapped its baseline of their economy with help from reputed bodies like IIM and NCAER and then work on specifics to increase their economic output.

"We've been focusing on the macro all these while, and while that continues, now we feel the need to also have the micro or the bottom," said Prabhu, who also heads the commerce and aviation ministries.

He said the chosen districts are in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, and these districts will get special attention in ease of doing business.

The minister said it is now a certainty that the $2.6-trillion economy will scale the $5-trillion mount over the next seven-nine years, and touch the $10 trillion mark by the turn of 2035.

The measures being undertaken to push growth at district level are aimed at achieving this higher target earlier, he said, adding there will be a launch event in the financial capital next Tuesday regarding the same.

Prabhu said the country is now targeting to increase the annual FDI inflows to $100 billion.

The government has identified the sectors which can attract investments and has prepared a list of 150 companies sitting with huge cash balance which will be targeted to get investments, he said.

He said a vibrant capital market is essential both for mobilising capital as well as make it work effectively, such that it delivers the maximum returns for the economy.

The minister also assured government help to ensure that the capital markets keep performing better.

Prabhu said it is one of the most challenging times for global trade and we'll have to increase our focus on services and merchandise exports and that government has asked Exim Bank to undertake an analysis both from a product as well a geographical perspective to increase exports.

Addressing the event, a top Anmi functionary flagged taxation issues being faced by investors, terming it as a price for transparency which domestic investors have to play and sought to be heard as the government is currently preparing the direct tax code.

"And to achieve this, we are targeting specific sectors as well as companies," he added.

Over 1,000 delegates from 40 countries are expected to participate in the two-day mega business event, which is being hosted for the first time in the state in association with the Ministry of Commerce and the Maharashtra Government.

Jet Airways has been grappling with financial woes that has also resulted in the full-service carrier delaying payment of salaries to staff, including pilots. The airline posted a loss of Rs 1,261 crore in the three months ended September.

Responding to queries related to Jet Airways, including possible bailout package, Prabhu said that in a deregulated atmosphere, the ministry's endeavour is to deal with sector-specific issues.

"For a private airline, it is for the board of directors and their management to ensure that the airline functions properly, that (they) have to take appropriate measures depending upon market conditions that will prevail from time to time," the minister said without directly mentioning Jet Airways.

Civil Aviation Secretary R N Choubey said the airline wanted some more lead time with regard to payments to airport operators but that was something to be done commercially between the two entities.

"That is something that they have to deal with airport operators. The ministry does not get into that.

"We don't get into commercial discussions between airlines and airport operators. It is to be done commercially between the two entities," Choubey said.

They were speaking at the sidelines of an event here.

India's GDP growth is likely to cross 8 per cent in the next two years and the government is taking a number of steps including formulation of a new industrial policy to double the economy's size to USD 5 trillion in 7-8 years, Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu said on Friday.

"We are working on few strategies to boost economic growth. We are now seeing an upsurge," he told reporters here while talking about the achievements of the government during the last four years.

Prabhu exuded confidence that the growth in 2018-19 will be better than the preceding fiscal.

"I should not be surprised that in the next few quarters, say next 2 years for sure, we will be very close to or cross 8 per cent growth and that is coming out of strong performance of so many sectors," he said.

India's GDP grew at the fastest pace in seven quarters at 7.7 per cent in the January-March quarter of last fiscal, retaining the fastest growing major economy tag on robust performance by manufacturing and service sectors as well as good farm output.

On yearly basis, however, it grew at a four-year low of 6.7 per cent in 2017-18, down from 7.1 per cent in the previous fiscal.

Prabhu said that to facilitate the 8 per cent potential growth, the government is working on several areas including formulation of a new industrial policy, "which is going to make India ready for the fourth industrial revolution and beyond".

"We have created a vision for USD 5 trillion economy in which USD one trillion will come from manufacturing, USD 3 trillion from services and USD one trillion agriculture and allied sector," he added.

When asked about the impact of the RBI's decision this week to raise the benchmark lending rate by 0.25 per cent, the minister said: "I do not think it should hamper investments".

On his US visit next week, Prabhu said that he would meet his counterpart and industry leaders and raise India's concerns about tightening visa regime in the US and its impact on Indian IT sector.

"We will be raising the visa issue because we feel that Indians and their spouses are facing some issues there," he said, adding, "we will explaining our position. It is not a formal trade talk..There is no huge expectations".

On the US challenging India's export support programmes, Prabhu said he would explain that those measures are not subsidies and instead ways to partially offset various additional costs incurred by them.

"Our export support regime is not violating any of the WTO rules," he said.

"We are also working to make sure that there is a proper clarity on this. But what we are doing today is not violating any WTO rule," he added.

On the proposed mega trade deal - Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), Prabhu said India is actively engaged in the negotiations and also holding bilateral talks with member countries including China, Australia and New Zealand.

"What we are saying in RCEP is that it is a comprehensive economic partnership pact and in this services should be an integral part of the agreement," he added.

New industries will drive future growth&nbsp;and the government is working with industries to identify what these new sectors are going to be," he said at the inaugural session of the India Economic Summit 2018 here on Friday.

Taking cognizance of India's trade deficit with China, Prabhu said agreements have been signed with China to help reduce.

"A new economic paradigm is being created for New India. States will drive growth in future, districts will facilitate it and the Central Government will give an umbrella cover for this growth," the minister was quoted as saying.&nbsp;

The Commerce Minister stated that the service sector will continue to be a strong growth driver of the national economy, while the government is working on increasing the productivity of the agriculture sector as well.

While the next wave of growth, Prabhu said, will happen due to a surge in Indian entrepreneurship, he emphasised on the need to work on improving the tax-GDP ratio.

Prabhu also noted that the government will soon announce a new cargo policy.

"We are very disappointed by some of the actions by the US administration," the commerce and industry minister told reporters here.&nbsp

The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. The technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China.&nbsp

Prabhu said under the visas issued to the technology service providers, there is evidence that Indians have contributed significantly to the growth of the US economy. Indian companies' investment into the US has created new jobs in America, he said, adding that if spouses of the Indian IT professionals are competent and qualified, they will only add value to the economy there and not snatch jobs of local people.&nbsp

IndiGo said he had used "threatening language" and words such as "hijack" and that they had acted according to safety protocols.

"Keeping in mind applicable safety protocols crew apprised pilot-in-command, who decided to offload him," IndiGo said in a statement.

The flight 6E 541 was scheduled to take off from Lucknow on way to Bengaluru on Tuesday morning.
