Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu on Thursday claimed that 56 new airports would be functional in the next few years in India.

"Efficient logistics is critical for countries like India to harness trade and facilitate greater and faster integration with both the domestic as well as the world economy. Keeping this in mind, 56 new airports will become functional in the next few years," Prabhu said while addressing the gathering at the two-day Global Logistics Summit in New Delhi.

The Indian logistics industry is estimated at around USD 215 billion in 2019-20, growing at over 10 percent annually. In the last decade or so, significant improvements have been made in railways, roads, highways, inland waterways, aviation, ports and coastal shipping.&nbsp

To keep up with the growth in demand for logistics services, it is important to develop a consistent approach to logistics across infrastructure, services and different modes of transportation.In this regard, Prabhu stated that by bringing all the stakeholders together, the summit will create the right platform to improve logistics and connectivity, which are vital for increasing intra-state and international trade flows.

On a related note, the Summit is being organised on April 5 and 6 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in partnership with FICCI and the World Bank Group, to support awareness building and develop a better understanding on the aforementioned issues.

The Summit also aims to provide an opportunity to discuss the above issues among global experts, academics, government officials and private sector and industry representatives. &nbsp

The aviation ministry was vacant after the resignation of TDP MP Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju in the wake of TDP&#39;s demand for a special status category for Andhra Pradesh.

Under attack over its failure to secure special category state status for Andhra Pradesh, the state&rsquo;s ruling TDP pulled out of the Modi government on Wednesday, but decided to remain part of the NDA.

Suresh Prabhu gets additional charge of Civil Aviation Ministry

Union commerce and industry minister Suresh Prabhu on Friday exuded confidence that India will become a $5 trillion economy in the next seven years, adding that India will be a bigger economy than China at some point of time.

India&rsquo;s GDP, at present, is estimated $2.5 trillion and that of China is $11.85 trillion. In October-December quarter, India posted a GDP growth of 7.2% to reclaim the tag of world&rsquo;s fastest-growing major economy from China.

&ldquo;I am very sure, you take a medium term, India will grow at a much faster rate. We will be a five-trillion-dollar economy in seven years&rsquo; time,&rdquo; Prabhu said at an event in New Delhi.

The minister said that his ministry has already prepared a paper on how India can become a larger economy. He said the manufacturing sector would contribute $1 trillion, services sector $3 trillion and the rest would come from agriculture for the country to become a $5 trillion economy in the next seven years.

&ldquo;After that, in next 7-10 years time, maybe a $10 trillion economy. China still will be growing. I am not saying China is just going to wait there at $11.8 trillion, but when they will start slowing down, we will start growing faster. I am sure one day we will be a bigger economy,&rdquo; the minister said.

Prabhu also spoke about various steps being taken by the government to increase India&rsquo;s exports. He also expressed concern over &ldquo;growing voices of protectionism&rdquo; and said that opening up of economies is necessary for global growth. &ldquo;We have seen after formation of WTO all the countries have benefited. Some countries benefited obviously more than others like China is the biggest beneficiary of WTO,&rdquo; he said.

The talks at the WTO&rsquo;s 11th ministerial at Buenos Aires in December had collapsed with the US going back on its commitment to finding a permanent solution to the public food stockholding, a key issue for developing countries like India. Soon after the collapse of the talks, Prabhu had announced that India would be hosting a mini-ministerial with a view to breaking the deadlock.

The informal WTO mini-ministerial is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on 19-20 March with an aim to find out common ground to carry forward the mandate of World Trade Organization.

India to become $5 trillion economy in 7 years: Suresh Prabhu

Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu expressed his opinion on today&#39;s Sensex bloodbath which led to an estimated&nbsp;loss of a whopping Rs 5.4 lakh crore to the investors.&nbsp;

In an interview with Zee Group Prabhu noted that the drop in the markets does not attribute to any domestic phenomenon.&nbsp;

&quot;Markets are linked globally and it is the after-effect of whatever happens in the international market,&quot; he noted.&nbsp;

He also noted that the proposed long-term capital gains tax was not responsible for the drop in markets as it didn&#39;t reflect any changes in the markets on the day of the budget as well.&nbsp;

The first train that derailed on Thursday was the Jabalpur-bound Shaktipunj Express -- it was travelling from Howrah -- which derailed&nbsp;near Sonbhadra in Uttar Pradesh.

The derailment happened at around 6:25 am, with seven coaches jump off the tracks.

No injuries were reported.

Rail traffic however was disrupted.

The second derailment of the New Delhi-Ranchi Rajdhani took place at about 11:45 am near Delhi&#39;s Shivaji Bridge.&nbsp;

ANI reported that the engine and power car of the train jumped off the tracks.

One person was reported injured.

PTI reported officials saying that an accident was averted after locals spotted a fracture in a track between Farrukhabad and Fatehgarh in UP, minutes before the Kalindi Express was scheduled to pass.

It added that the mishaps occurred, ironcially, on a day the new railway minister Piyush Goyal chaired a high-level meeting with Railway Board officials to discuss ways to ensure the safe operation of trains.

The accidents had led to former union railway minister Suresh Prabhu being shunted out of his job.&nbsp;He is now minister of commerce and industry.

Kumar is a Lok Sabha MP from Tikamgah, Madhya Pradesh. He has had a distinguished career in Public Service as a 6 term Lok Sabha MP. Highly qualified academically, VirendraKumar is armed with an MA in Economics and a PhD in Child Labour.

Anantkumar Hegde

Hegde is a Lok Sabha MP from Uttara Kannada, Karnataka. He is a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on ExternalAffairs and Human Resource Development.

With a deep focus on rural India, Hegde is the Founder President ofKadamba, an NGO working in the field of rural development, rural health, SHGs, rural marketing and other rural welfare programmes.

Raj Kumar Singh

Singh is a Lok Sabha MP from Arrah, Bihar. He is a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committees on Health and Family Welfare, Personnel, Pensions and Public Grievances and Law &amp; Justice. Raj Kumar Singh is a former IAS officer of the 1975 batch, Bihar cadre. He rose up the ranks to become the Home Secretary of India.

Hardeep Puri

Puri is a decorated former IFS officer of the 1974 batch, known forhis experience and expertise in foreign policy and national security. He is the President and Chairman of Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) think tank, and was the Vice President of International Peace Institute, New York.

As Head of the Indian Delegation to the UN Security Council, Puri had served as Chairman of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the UN as well as President of the United Nations Security Council.

Gajendra Singh Shekhawat

Shekhawat is a Lok Sabha MP from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He is a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance and Chairperson of the Fellowship Committee.

As a technology-savvy, progressive farmer; Shekhawat is a role model for the rural community. He has an MPhil &amp; MA in Philosophy from Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur.

Satya Pal Singh

Singh is a Lok Sabha MP from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. He is a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs and Chairperson of the Joint Committee on Offices of Profit. He is a distinguished former IPS officer of the 1980 batch, Maharashtra cadre, and has been recognized with medals like the Antrik Suraksha Sewa Padak a Special Service Medal. Born in Basauli village in Baghpat, Satya Pal Singh has a MSc and MPhil in Chemistry, MBA in Strategic Management from Australia, MA in Public.

Alphons Kannanthanam

Kannanthanam is a distinguished former IAS officer of the 1979 batch, Kerala cadre. He is also a practicing advocate. He became famous as Delhi&#39;s Demolition Man when he was Commissioner of the Delhi Development Authority, having cleared DDA areas of encroachment removing around 15,000 illegal buildings. This got him listed in Time Magazine&#39;s list of 100 Young Global Leaders in 1994. Kannanthanam retired from the IAS, to get elected as an Independent Member of Legislative Assembly for Kanjirappally in Kerala from 2006 to 2011.

The Six Dropped Ministers

Utkal Express derailment: Railway takes action, 4 suspended, 3 sent on leave

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu has begun to feet the heat after a spate of major train accidents this year that have left more than 225 people dead. From none other than the prime minister&#39;s office.&nbsp;

The PMO has dispatched an official letter, dated January 31, expressing its displeasure over the functioning of the railways.

The letter, accessed exclusively by DNA, was written by Nripendra Mishra, principal secretary to the prime minister, to Railway Board chairman AK Mittal. it addresses the ministry&rsquo;s inability to achieve many of the targets that it had set itself over the last two years.

Key among them was the promise to achieve &ldquo;modernisation of facilities in railways&rdquo; which, as the letter suggests, has not happened so far.

&ldquo;You are aware of the focus of the government towards development and modernisation of facilities in railways,&rdquo; Mishra tells Mittal in the letter.

&ldquo;While reviewing the progress up to 2016, against the target of 1500 km of doubling, only 531 km has been achieved. In electrification, against the target of 2000 RKM, only 1,210 km has been achieved by railways,&rdquo; it states.

Doubling is laying another set of tracks on the same route. It serves the purpose of easing congestion on those sections which have ample traffic but low availability of tracks.

The PMO&rsquo;s displeasure with the railways is so high that Mishra also warns Mittal through the letter that the railways needs to &ldquo;justify higher allocation in the next budget&rdquo;. In this year&rsquo;s Rail Budget, the railways had received an impressive Rs 1,31,000 crore from the Finance Ministry. This was much more than what other transport ministries such as road and civil aviation had received.

The year 2016 was one of the worst years for the Railways as far as train accidents went.

Experts say most of the accidents took place on heavily congested routes allegedly due to rail fracture, which happens when the track is overused without proper maintenance. It is for these busy routes that doubling is most important and experts have time and again pointed out the need for more doubling in railways.

So far the Railways Ministry, according to the PMO, has not used its resources well. The letter speaks of the government&rsquo;s displeasure over the ministry, &ldquo;crowding its expenditure for the last quarter&rdquo;.

According to sources, nearly 50 per cent of the planned expenditure by the ministry remains unused in the early quarters and the railways only starts using them by the last quarter. The letter makes it clear that railways should ensure that there is no crowding of expenditure, &ldquo;as that slows down the pace of implementation in the first quarter of the next annual budget&rdquo;.

Apparently, the PMO is not the only entity upset by Prabhu and his ministry. Sources reveal that finance minister Arun Jaitley has also been asking the ministry to focus on its core work -- running trains safely and modernising the railways.
