Astronomers have shared a photo of a star collapsing on itself, called a supernova, in the Pinwheel Galaxy, about 21 million light-years away from Earth.

The cosmic event was witnessed through the Gemini North telescope atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii by Japanese astronomer Koichi Itagaki on May 19.

The supernova, named SN 2023ixf, is said to be the closest one seen in five years.

In the photo shared by the astronomer, the supernova can be seen shining brightly in a blueish point of light on the far left on one of the spiral arms of Pinwheel Galaxy, which is also known as Messier 101 or M101.

The Pinwheel Galaxy is in the direction of the Ursa Major constellation. It faces Earth head-on and showcases its stunning spiral structure and nearly one trillion stars.

"This is the closest supernova to be discovered within the last five years and the second supernova to occur in Messier 101 within the past 15 years, following a Type I supernova observed in 2011," the National Science Foundation's NOIRLab, which runs big telescopes across the US and elsewhere, including the Gemini North, said in a statement.

According to NOIRLab, the SN 2023ixf is a Type II supernova, which are common in the arms of spiral galaxies.

Valuable data for scientists

It said that such stellar explosions occur when stars some eight to 50 times more massive than our sun run out of fuel, collapse inward and finally explode in incredible bursts of energy.

“In just 10 seconds, a Type II supernova can release as much energy as our sun will throughout its entire lifetime,” NOIRLab observes.

The analysis of the supernova is expected to provide valuable data about these cosmic light shows.

"Over the coming months, Gemini North will allow astronomers to study how the light from the supernova fades and how its spectrum evolves over time, helping astronomers better understand the physics of such explosions," it said in a statement.

The new image taken of the supernova’s aftermath by the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii marks the observatory’s comeback to scientific observations after a seven-month hiatus.

The telescope’s primary mirror was damaged in October while it was being moved, sustaining a chipped edge. The primary mirror has since been refurbished, given a new layer of protective coating and reinstalled, allowing the telescope to resume its search of the night sky for cosmic phenomena.

Astronomers share photo of new supernova shining brightly in Pinwheel Galaxy

Researchers for the first time have successfully observed a supernova in its initial phase while trawling through data from Nasa’s Kepler space telescope.

The telescope had recorded the event in 2017 as astrophysicists noted the light burst from a supernova as the star exploded.

The study was published in monthly notices of the royal astronomical society. The Kepler space telescope which recorded the celestial event is no longer in use. It reportedly took photos of the same part of the sky for 40 days at a stretch while almost accidentally recording the remarkable phenomena.

The light from the supernova takes several weeks even months to fade. The phenomena has been recorded through ancient times.

The NASA telescope took pictures every half an hour allowing it to accurately take unique photos as the historic event unfolded without anyone noticing. The early explosion can be recorded only for a few days.

The supernova was recorded in real-time helping scientists to record the evolution of stars. Astromers say they now have a somewhat clearer picture of how stars collapse then earlier.

The supernova recorded by the Kepler telescope was a billion light-years away from the Earth.

The star was reportedly hundred times the size of the Sun.

The shock cooling light curve allows scientists to measure the light emitted by supernova over a period of time and it also gives information on its composition.

Reports say NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is likely to record more supernovae explosions as they occur.

Supernovas are highly violent cosmic events that mark the end of a star’s life cycle. Now, astronomers have solved the mystery behind an elusive kind of supernova, which may be able to explain the birth of hypnotising “Crab Nebula”.

The supernova in question may have illuminated the night sky on Earth about 1,000 years ago, a new study claims.

What are supernovas?

When a star dies, they run out of fuel and collapse onto themselves, causing a large and violent explosion capable of changing the anatomy of any celestial system. These explosions are extremely bright and are capable of being seen from halfway across the universe.

Till now, scientists knew about two kinds of supernovas. One usually takes place in large stars that are over 10 times the mas of our sun. Their collapse begins in the core, when their fuel burns out. This leads to the destruction of its outer layers, leaving behind a neutron star or a black hole.

The other kind of supernova takes place in stars that are less than eight times the mass of sun which burn out over time and leave behind an ashy body called a white dwarf. These dwarves can pull fuel from other stars towards themselves, which triggers an explosion.

How was Crab Nebula formed?

Stars between the 8-10 solar masses would theoretically explode in a different manner, in a process called “electron-capture” which causes electrons to fuse with atomic nuclei. In usual circumstances, these repel each other. This triggers an explosion around the star’s surrounding layers and leaves behind a neutron star, around the size of our sun.

A supernova in 1054 AD, as recorded in Chinese and Japanese documents details a bright light which was seen during the daytime on Earth for at least 23 days, and for two years in the nighttime. What remained was the Crab Nebula, and “electron-capture” may be attributed to it.
