Although the scenes were cut by director Joss Whedon, who took over the ill-fated film after Snyder's daughter died by suicide, Snyder restored these scenes in his version of the film.

And there could be a particular reason for adding Choi into the "Snyder Cut." In his final scene of the lengthy film, Choi reveals that his specialty in scientific research is actually nanotechnology. This is a significant reveal for comic book fans because, in the DC comics, Choi is actually one of several characters who take on the mantle of the famous superhero The Atom. Atom's superpowers include the power to shrink down to the size of an atom, hence the relevance of the nanotechnology reveal.

In the comics, Choi is the protege to Ray Palmer, who actually appeared in the TV show 'Arrow,'&nbsp;played by ex-Superman actor Brandon Routh. This potential reveal of an eighth superhero suggests that Choi could be seen in future sequels.

When the Marvel superhero movies reached their box office-shattering climax in 2019, nobody could have predicted the saga's next installment would be a kitsch, black-and-white TV sitcom called "WandaVision."

But a lot has changed since Iron Man and friends saved the world in that summer's all-time record-grossing blockbuster "Avengers: Endgame" (and mopped up some loose plot points in "Spider-Man: Far From Home" shortly thereafter.)

The wildly popular franchise of 23 interconnected movies has ground to a halt along with the rest of the world as Covid-19 shuttered movie theaters, delaying "Black Widow" and other big-screen superhero sequels.

Meanwhile, parent company Disney has splashed out billions bringing its biggest franchises and characters to the Disney+ TV platform, as it locks horns with Netflix, HBO Max and others in the spendthrift "streaming wars."

So here to finally push onward the over-arching plot of Marvel's "cinematic universe" is "WandaVision," an oddball and fiercely original series out Friday on Disney+.

It stars witch Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), and other-worldly android Vision (Paul Bettany), two B-list superheroes who struck up an unlikely but fan-favorite romance across several recent Marvel films.

"WandaVision" finds them -- without explanation -- living happily married in the idyllic 1950s town of Westview, which is seemingly lifted straight from an episode of "Bewitched" or "I Love Lucy" (complete with canned laughter track.)

They still have superpowers but have traded battles with genocidal villains for a cozy world of school fundraisers, neighborhood watch meetings and anniversary dinners.

If that sounds incredibly weird, it is.

"When I first heard the pitch of the show, I was gobsmacked," admitted director Matt Shakman.

"There are so many shows out there on streaming right now -- to find something that feels so special, like it hasn't been done before, that's really rare," he told AFP. "And this definitely is one of those."

- 'Secret sauce' - 
Of course, all is not what it seems.

Mystery shrouds the arrival of Wanda and Vision in their bizarre new home, and some neighbors appear to know more than they initially let on.

Trailers suggest that later episodes will hop through time and bring Marvel fans the more familiar popcorn action sequences they have been craving -- and, indeed, scenes shot in color.

Keeping plot under wraps, Marvel has shown press just three well-received episodes, which are remarkable mainly for humorous set-pieces in which the pair narrowly avoid revealing their secret to nosy neighbors.

"The (Marvel) movies are hilarious and that's definitely a huge part of their secret sauce," said Shakman, who drew influence from his background on other TV comedies including "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

"The number one rule that we learned on 'Sunny' is if it makes us laugh, it will make other people laugh."

Beyond the gags, starved Marvel obsessives are itching to find out what has happened to their favorite characters.

Marvel has produced dozens of TV series before, but "WandaVision" is the first confirmed to fit -- somehow -- into the films' grand, shared storyline.

An explosion of fan theories has tried to solve these riddles, not least how the show gets around Vision's death in 2018 film "Avengers: Infinity War."

"There is so much anticipation for the show," said Shakman.

"The 'why' of it all is part of the great mystery of the show," he explained.

Now an unlikely country is set to launch a vast superhero universe. This is the archipelago country of Indonesia, which is all set to launch its own franchise of superheroes.

The first movie of the series,'Gundala', has been directed by one of country's most prolific filmmakers, Joko Anwar.

It is based on a 1969 comic which tells the story of an impoverished factory worker's son who fights corruption and injustice after a lightning strike gives him superhuman powers.

'Gundala" has earned $4.7 million in the Indonesian cinemas since August last year.&nbsp; It will hit screens worldwide in July, once cinema halls re-open after the coronavirus pandemic.

The producers of the movie hope they&nbsp;will launch a vast cinematic universe, featuring 1,100 characters, with eight films planned through 2025.&nbsp;

According to Anwar,&nbsp;"our films&nbsp;are about our&nbsp;country, our oppressors and the powers of the superheroes come from our mythology. We do&nbsp;not deal&nbsp;with super high technology.''

Indonesian filmmakers are betting big on their home-grown superhero films&nbsp;which will be made at a fraction of a budget of Hollywood's Marvel and DC&nbsp;films.&nbsp;

It is based on a 1969 comic which tells the story of an impoverished factory worker's son who fights corruption and injustice after a lightning strike gives him superhuman powers. 'Gundala" has earned $4.7 million in the Indonesian cinemas since August last year. It will hit screens worldwide in July, once cinema halls re-open after the coronavirus pandemic. The producers of the movie hope they will launch a vast cinematic universe, featuring 1,100 characters, with eight films planned through 2025. According to Anwar, "our films are about our country, our oppressors and the powers of the superheroes come from our mythology. We do not deal with super high technology.'' Indonesian filmmakers are betting big on their home-grown superhero films which will be made at a fraction of a budget of Hollywood's Marvel and DC films.

In an era when superheroes seem to be everywhere -- there were literally dozens in the most recent "Avengers" film -- the Man of Steel stands apart. Eighty years after his debut in Action Comics #1, dated June 1938, Superman is still an American cultural icon, the hero of reference and the undisputed star of DC Comics. And today, the comic book publisher -- also known for Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern, among others -- is counting on Superman more than ever. "He is the mould people worked with, the template for the idea of a superhero," explains Jared Smith, who works in a comic book store in Washington. "Superman is a very idealized character. They call him the Boy Scout of America. He always does the right thing and tries do to the good thing." In Action Comics #1, 13 pages were dedicated to the story of Kal-El, an alien from the planet Krypton with supernatural strength, sent to Earth by his father before his home planet was destroyed. Superman's debut was a smash success. A year later, DC Comics gave the Man of Steel his own book and introduced another formidable hero: Batman. Eighty years on, the formula has not changed: Superman has more or less always appeared in his red, blue and yellow suit with the "S" symbol on the chest. In his appearances on the silver and small screen, in comic strips and video games, he has fought for truth, justice and the "American Way." In Illinois, the town of Metropolis -- which shares a name with Superman's fictional home -- organizes an annual festival celebrating the hero. This summer, on the heels of a "Man of Steel" mini-series, DC Comics will reboot the standalone "Superman" series. For the challenge, they tapped Brian Michael Bendis, a legend in the genre who worked for two decades at rival publisher Marvel. "You always feel the legacy of the character when you hop on, and I've had that joy a couple of times, but there's something different about Superman," Bendis said in an interview with pop culture website Nerdist. "I think there's something fascinating about the fact that not only did this character invent the genre but it stayed true and became the core, soul, and centre of the genre for the entirety of its existence." Superman is an immigrant on Earth, raised by a farmer and his wife from infancy in fictional Smallville. Eventually, he takes the name Clark Kent, moves to Metropolis and becomes a journalist. His two creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, were Jewish high school students when they first came up with the idea for Superman. Their parents were immigrants, and their character personified the American dream -- a metaphor for immigrants who fled Europe in the 1930s for the peace and prosperity of America. It's a theme that Bendis plans to pick up. "People would come from all over the world just to live in Metropolis, to be watched over by the most famous immigrant," Bendis told The Washington Post. "It's not going to be this huge message, it's just going to be there -- just flavour, the way we see the world." From time to time in the past, Superman's popularity waned -- his chiselled perfection was sometimes too much for an imperfect audience, who turned to Spider-Man and the X-Men, whose flaws they could identify with more readily. "They made him so powerful as a character that there was nothing that could really threaten him, so after that, they introduced the idea of Kryptonite from his planet that could take away some of his powers," Smith explains. To keep Superman in step with society, writers tried to keep him in sync with political and societal changes of the times -- in 1978, he met boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who took him to the ghettos of Metropolis. More recently, Superman wanted to surrender his American nationality in protest at the government, which he felt had betrayed him. In another storyline, he saved migrant workers from a white supremacist, a nod to far-right violence seen in some corners of the country. Smith even recalls that the Man of Steel had something of a "socialist start," fighting capitalists "who were taking too much money or not treating their workers well" in the 1930s and 1940s. As ever, he fights for the American Way, whatever the definition.
