Forty-six people were killed when a Sudanese military transport plane crashed into a residential neighbourhood on the outskirts of Khartoum, the regional government said Wednesday.
The Antonov aircraft went down on Tuesday night near Wadi Seidna air base, one of the army’s largest military hubs in Omdurman, northwest of the capital.
The army, which has been at war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, said the plane crashed during takeoff, killing and injuring both military personnel and civilians.
"After a final tally, the number of martyrs reached 46, with 10 injured," the Khartoum regional government's media office said in a statement.
The army-aligned health ministry had previously reported at least 19 dead.
Witnesses described hearing a loud explosion and seeing several homes damaged in the area. The crash also caused power outages in nearby neighbourhoods.
The ministry said emergency teams rushed injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital.
A military source cited a technical malfunction as the cause of the crash, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to comment to the media.

Army advances

The crash came a day after the RSF claimed responsibility for shooting down a Russian-made Ilyushin aircraft over Nyala, the capital of South Darfur
The paramilitary group said the plane was destroyed with its crew onboard.
The recent escalation follows significant advances by the army in central Sudan and the capital Khartoum, in its multi-front offensive against the RSF.
Late on Saturday, RSF signed a charter with allied political and armed groups in Nairobi, Kenya, paving the way for the formation of a parallel government in rebel-held areas.
Since April 2023, army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy and RSF commander Mohamed Hamadan Daglo, once allies, have been locked in a deadly power struggle.
The war, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives, erupted after a rift emerged between Burhan and Daglo over the future structure of the government.
The conflict has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters in recent memory, according to the United Nations.
The fighting has devastated Khartoum and other major cities, displacing over 12 million, plunging the country into hunger and crippling critical infrastructure.

After Donald Trump's return to the Oval Office, the United States is rewriting the diplomatic playbook. From being Canada's ally to realigning its equations with neighboring countries, Trump's administration is reworking its diplomatic goals, not just with its allies but also with its foes. The leading candidates vying to replace Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have spent considerable time discussing the need to stand up to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Iran is also preparing to defend its territory. The Islamic Republic has put its defense systems around its nuclear sites on high alert. Reports suggest the new measures are in response to growing concerns of potential joint military action by Israel and the U.S.

A drone attack on one of the last functioning hospitals in El-Fasher in Sudan's Darfur region killed 30 people and injured dozens, a medical source said Saturday.
The bombing of the Saudi Hospital on Friday evening "led to the destruction" of the hospital's emergency building, the source told AFP, requesting anonymity for fear of retaliation.
It was not immediately clear which of Sudan's warring sides had launched the attack.
Since April 2023, the Sudanese army has been at war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have seized nearly the entire vast western region of Darfur.

They have besieged El-Fasher, the state capital of North Darfur, since May, but have not managed to claim the city, where army-aligned militias have repeatedly pushed them back.
Last week, they issued an ultimatum demanding army forces and allies leave the city by Wednesday afternoon in advance of an expected offensive.
Local activists have reported intermittent fighting since, including repeated artillery fire from the RSF on the famine-hit Abu Shouk displacement camp.
On Friday morning alone, heavy shelling killed eight people in the camp, according to civil society group the Darfur General Coordination of Camps for the Displaced and Refugees.

The United Nations has voiced alarm, calling on both parties to ensure the protection of the city's civilian population -- some two million people.
"The people of El-Fasher have suffered so much already from many months of senseless violence and brutal violations and abuses, particularly in the course of the prolonged siege of their city," United Nations rights office spokesman Seif Magango said Wednesday.
According to the medical source, the Saudi Hospital's emergency building had been hit by an RSF drone "a few weeks ago".

The United Arab Emirates has been repeatedly accused of funnelling weapons, including drones, to the RSF.

In December, it assured the outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden that it was "not now transferring any weapons" to the RSF.
The US concluded earlier this month that the paramilitaries were committing "genocide" in Darfur.
The RSF's latest attempt to consolidate its hold on war-ravaged Darfur -- a vast region about the size of France, home to a quarter of Sudan's population -- comes as the army claims significant victories elsewhere.
Some 800 kilometres (500 miles) east, the military on Friday regained control of a major oil refinery and broke a paramilitary siege on its Khartoum headquarters, which the RSF had encircled since the war began in April 2023.
Earlier this month, the army successfully wrested control of the key state capital Wad Madani, just south of Khartoum, from the RSF.
Since the war began, both the army and the RSF have been accused of war crimes, including targeting civilians and indiscriminately shelling residential areas.
Before leaving office on Monday, the Biden administration sanctioned Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, accusing the army of attacking schools, markets and hospitals and using food deprivation as a weapon of war.
Across the country, up to 80 percent of healthcare facilities have been forced out of service, according to official figures.
In El-Fasher, where ambulances and hospital buildings have been routinely targeted, medical charity Doctors Without Borders said this month the Saudi Hospital was "the only public hospital with surgical capacity still standing".
The war has so far killed tens of thousands, uprooted more than 12 million and brought millions to the brink of mass starvation.
In the area around El-Fasher, famine has already taken hold in three displacement camps -- Zamzam, Abu Shouk and Al-Salam -- and is expected to expand to five more areas including the city itself by May, according to a UN-backed assessment.

Sudan conflict: 20 killed in Khartoum air strike, says rescuers

Nearly three million people have fled Sudan after 18 months of war in a still-growing exodus, the UN warned, with 25,000 fleeing to neighbouring Chad in the first week of October alone.

Mamadou Dian Balde, the UN's Sudan regional refugee coordinator, told AFP that the three-million mark will likely be crossed in the next two to three weeks.

That the figure is approaching three million is a "disaster" directly linked to the increasing brutality of the conflict, he said in an interview on Tuesday during his visit to Geneva this week.

War has raged since April 2023 between the Sudanese army under the country's de facto ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, led by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Both sides have been accused of war crimes, including targeting civilians and blocking humanitarian aid.

The conflict has left tens of thousands dead and some 26 million people facing severe food insecurity, with famine declared in the Zamzam displacement camp in Sudan's western Darfur region.

Some 11.3 million people have been forced to flee, including nearly 2.95 million who have fled across the country's borders, according to the latest figures from UNHCR, the UN refugee agency.

- Strain on Chad -

In a sign of the worsening conflict in Darfur, some 25,000 people -- 80 percent of whom were women and children -- crossed into eastern Chad in the first week of October, a record number for a single week in 2024.

And more than 20,270 crossed into Chad in the whole of September.

Chad is host to 681,944 Sudanese refugees -- more than any other country.

However, it is also one of the poorest countries on Earth and is lacking the basic services to accommodate such numbers, said Balde, while highlighting the generosity shown by Chadians towards their fleeing neighbours.

"When we see 25,000 arriving, it's enormous," he said.

He called for greater support from international donors.

A UN appeal for $1.51 billion to support Sudanese refugees and their hosts in the region through the end of the year remains just 27-percent funded.

"It's not enough, because the number of refugees continues to grow," said Balde, who also serves as the UNHCR's East and Horn of Africa and Great Lakes regional director.

Balde said he expected "very unfortunately, in the coming weeks, to have many more refugees in Chad", due to both the conflict intensifying in Darfur and the drop in water levels as the rainy season ends.

- Aid still limited -

With the drier conditions, the UN hopes to be able to deliver more aid to Sudan -- if the parties to the conflict allow it.

Several rounds of negotiation efforts have so far failed to end the fighting.

In late August, following talks outside Geneva convened by the United States, the two factions committed to ensuring safe and unhindered access for humanitarians along two key corridors.

"This has helped us save lives," but "not all the commitments made have been respected" -- and the flow of aid remains "limited", said Balde, deploring the persistent "barriers at the administrative level".

In Geneva for the UNHCR's annual executive committee meeting, he chaired a discussion on Sudan, during which he asked for support to help Sudanese refugees get into the jobs market and thereby reduce their reliance on humanitarian assistance.

"We are asking development actors to mobilise to complement" such aid, he explained, while stressing the need for peace in Sudan.

Balde warned it would be "a big mistake" to think the flow of displaced people will be limited to Sudan and the wider region.

"There are more and more who are coming towards Italy, Europe and southern Africa", and "there are some who will go towards the Gulf countries too", he said.

Escalating Sudan bloodshed increases refugee surge into Chad

Sudan is again in the state of crisis, a war that had never ended is marking a new turning point. The Army bombarded parts of the capital to force the paramilitary out. The civilians are paying the price for it again. Watch to know more.

Sudan In The Middle Of Brutal Gunfire & Dirty Politics

Air strikes and shelling rocked Khartoum on Thursday as the army attacked paramilitary positions across the Sudanese capital, witnesses and a military source told AFP.

The clashes began at dawn, several residents reported, in what appeared to be the army's first major offensive in months to regain parts of the capital controlled by the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

It comes the same day Sudan's de facto leader, army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, addressed the UN General Assembly in New York.

On the eve of his address, UN chief Antonio Guterres voiced concern to Burhan "about the escalation of the conflict in the Sudan", the United Nations said.

Burhan called in his address for the "rebel militia to be designated as a terrorist group" and accused the RSF of obstructing peace efforts.

On the ground, Sudanese army forces were "waging fierce fighting against the rebel militia inside Khartoum", a source in the military told AFP, referring to the RSF.

The source, requesting anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media, said army forces had crossed three key bridges over the Nile -- which had separated parts of the capital held by the army from those under RSF control.

- 'Political cover' -

Since April 2023, when war broke out between Burhan's Sudanese Armed Forces and his former deputy, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, the paramilitaries had largely pushed the army out of Khartoum.

In its last major offensive in February, the army regained much of Omdurman, the capital's twin city across the Nile and part of greater Khartoum.

The government loyal to the army is based in Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast, where the army has retained control.

The RSF, meanwhile, has taken control of nearly all of the vast western region of Darfur, rampaged through the agricultural heartland of central Sudan and pushed into the army-controlled southeast.

In his address at the UN, Burhan accused "countries in the region" of providing the RSF with "financial support, mercenaries and political cover".

The army chief did not name the countries, but his government has repeatedly accused the United Arab Emirates of funnelling arms to the paramilitaries from neighbouring Chad in violation of the arms embargo on Darfur.

United Nations experts last year found the accusations "credible", and diplomats say the United States has in private pressed the UAE over its support to the RSF.

- 'Intense' shelling -

In Omdurman, a witness said the sound of bombs, which had "jolted them from sleep" at dawn, continued through the day.

Several residents of Omdurman reported "intense artillery shelling" falling on residential buildings while military warplanes flew overhead.

"In our neighbourhood alone, three people have been killed today," one Omdurman resident told AFP, requesting anonymity for fear of reprisal.

Amid an effective communications blackout and a crippled healthcare system, it was not possible to verify any casualty toll.

Since the war began, much of its worst fighting has been in densely populated areas and both sides have been accused of war crimes, including indiscriminately bombing residential areas.

The war has already killed tens of thousands of people, with the World Health Organization saying at least 20,000 people have been killed, but some estimates of up to 150,000.

It has also created the world's largest displacement crisis, the UN says.

More than 10 million people -- around a fifth of Sudan's population -- have been forced from their homes, according to UN figures.

Famine has been declared in Zamzam refugee camp in Darfur near the city of El-Fasher, where the RSF last weekend launched a large-scale offensive after months of siege.

El-Fasher is the only one of five state capitals in Darfur not yet in RSF hands.

In his meeting with Burhan, Guterres said the war "risks a regional spillover," the UN said.

"People in Sudan have endured 17 months of hell, and the suffering continues to grow," top UN relief official Joyce Msuya said separately.

Sudanese army launches airstrikes in Khartoum against paramilitary positions

Sudan's army has initiated a significant offensive against the powerful paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), amid the ongoing civil war. On Thursday morning, government forces conducted shelling attacks on RSF bases in Khartoum and the northern area of Bahri, focusing on reclaiming territory lost at the onset of the conflict. The offensive marks a crucial escalation in the violence as the military seeks to regain control over key areas in the capital.

Sudan's army and the paramilitary rapid support forces (RSF) said they are open for peaceful solutions to a war that has been ongoing for more than 17 months, in response to U.S. President Joe Biden's call on warring parties to re-engage in talks. Army Chief Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan says the Sudanese government remains open to all constructive efforts aimed at ending the war, before RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo followed suit with a similar sentiment.
