The developing world is bracing for a tumultuous 2025. Emerging market nations have to deal with the added stress of paying interest on the 29 trillion dollars in debt that was accumulated over the past decade.
The United Nations reports that a record  54 nations will pay interest that exceeds 10 per cent of their earnings. Some countries, like Nigeria and Pakistan, will pay more than 30 per cent of their revenues on coupon payments alone.
As a result, nations are cutting down on internal investments like roads, schools, and hospitals. This increased risks for investors in developing markets, totalling around 850 billion dollars in debt last year.
Roberto Sifon-Arevalo, global head of sovereign ratings at S&amp;P Global Ratings said, "Interest burdens are massive. There's a lot of muddle through, but there's a tremendous amount of risk."
The debt risk is something developing markets have to worry about in 2025.
In addition, uncertainty about the Chinese economy, rising geopolitical tensions, and the effects of Donald Trump on US Rates and dollar forecasts all point to a rocky 2025.
Morgan Stanley's data shows that global investors are already pulling their money out of hard-currency em debt, with outflows exceeding 14 billion dollars this year.
Emerging-market debt over the previous decade has more than doubled to about 29 billion dollars.
As a result, they have large interest payments and bond maturities that must be met or refinanced. In the next two years, approximately 190 billion dollars in foreign bond obligations are due.

Around the world, crypto trading is still a small-scale activity, mostly enjoyed by extremely risk-tolerant individuals, however, it has been very popular in South Korea.

The volume of trades involving bitcoin and other cryptos on Korean crypto exchanges has surpassed the activity on equities listed on the Kospi stock index, the country's main benchmark.

Koreans are restricted from transferring their funds into foreign currency to trade on international crypto marketplaces.

This is due to currency controls and anti-money laundering regulations.

So, only local exchanges can meet this enormous demand.

This is why South Koreans pay a premium for Bitcoin and other cryptos compared to other countries.

That additional payout is called "The Kimchi premium," named after the popular Korean side dish.

This "Kimchi premium" was the inspiration for the crypto arbitrage trading approach that brought fame and fortune to the now-infamous crypto entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried.

However, there is a risk of legal trouble for anyone who tries to profit from the kimchi premium.

Where did the kimchi premium come from?

The phrase appeared during a Bitcoin bull run in 2017 when the cryptocurrency soared past 19,000 dollars, although no one knows who came up with the name first.

However, in today's globalised financial system, prices of the same asset should converge. Investors swiftly capitalise on and trade away any price differential that arises across global markets.

In 2017, crypto fever took off in South Korea, with Bitcoin's increase and a plethora of other coins being offered.

The central bank had to warn its employees not to trade cryptocurrency in 2018, particularly while on the clock. Investors from South Korea remained committed to the asset class despite the market volatility of 2022.

Almost 15 per cent of the population, or 7 million people, are now registered to trade on a crypto exchange. In terms of the volume of crypto transactions, the Korean won surpassed the US Dollar this year.

Wall Street Stocks Advance For A Fourth Consecutive Session

Wall Street Bets On More & New Riches

As Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump clinched a historic victory in the US presidential elections, the global financial markets were rattled and left many investors in a tizzy.

Before weighing the implications of this economic shake-up, let's first understand the impact of Trump's victory on market indexes, currencies and commodities.&nbsp;

<h2>How global markets reacted to Trump's victory?</h2>

As soon as the results were out, the US shares jumped to a record high on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average&nbsp;rallied nearly 4 per cent, the S&amp;P opened 2 per cent higher and amid this market euphoria, the dollar recorded its biggest jump in eight years.&nbsp;

Some of the stocks saw a surge in price, especially Elon Musk's owned Tesla and Trump Media. Musk remained a staunch supporter of Trump throughout the election campaign and has a high chance of holding a position in the government.&nbsp;

Even though Tesla shares rallied on the market, stocks of other electric automakers went into a slump because of Trump's decision to consider putting an end to a $7,500 tax credit for EV purchases&nbsp;on coming&nbsp;to power.&nbsp;

The small-cap stocks also performed well, as the Russell 2000 index jumped to around 5 per cent, which was its largest rise in one day in two years. Bank stocks also joined the celebrations as they soared in the market.&nbsp;

In the world of cryptocurrency, bitcoin recorded a historic all-time high because of Trump's position to prioritise the volatile cryptocurrency.

Predicting the global market's future in Trump 2.0, Samir Bahl, CEO - Investment Banking, Anand Rathi Advisors, said to WION, "Investors can be optimistic that a pro-business administration can lead to favourable market conditions and potentially promising returns in the medium term. This administration is also likely to seek decisive settlements to ongoing global conflicts currently impacting global supply chains and market sentiments."

The global markets also remained impacted by the import duties, which included a 60 per cent tariff on imports from China and a 10 per cent universal tariff on imports from all foreign countries.

The victory of Trump initially triggered a sell-off because of which oil fell by more than $2, however, it turned positive later in the day. According to predictions of Citi, Trump's second term is likely to exert pressure on oil in 2025 and Brent crude is likely to remain at an average of $60 per barrel, because of increased oil supply and potential trade tariffs.&nbsp;

However, speaking to WION, Siddharth Maurya, Founder &amp; Managing Director of Vibhavangal Anukulakara Private Limited, said that election results' "immediate effect would be felt in the case of fossil fuels, infrastructure and domestic manufacturing. Even though there are very high expectations from the presidential policies, it has been established that core drivers of returns would be the Fed policies and the global economy."

<h2>The see-saw between US elections and the Indian stock market</h2>

The euphoria of Trump's victory was also reflected in the Indian stock market, which rallied through the day and closed in green. Nifty rose to 24,484.05 and the benchmark BSE Sensex closed at 80,378.13, which marked a 901.50 point, or 1.13 per cent jump from the previous day.&nbsp;

However, the excitement fizzled out in the stock market the next day&nbsp;as investors tried to weigh both the positive and negative implications of the Republicans being at the helm of US politics on the Indian market.

Speaking about the implications of Trump's victory on the Indian market, Maurya said, "The positives could be the strengthening of bilateral relations, Indian IT companies benefitting if US corporates increase spending or US companies increasing the pace at which they move their supply chains from China towards India. There could be some uneasy situations as well because of limitations on immigration policies that impact the provision of IT services, trade restrictions, and world market instability on account of US-China relations."

The Indian rupee also witnessed an all-time low of 84.3775&nbsp;amid outflows from local equities and expectations that the change in regime would boost the dollar.

So what lies ahead for the Indian market? "The Indian equities market can expect to continue its strong performance after the long overdue correction. While there could be some pressure on India-US trade negotiations, under the Trump administration, U.S.-China tensions could further accelerate the China + 1 policy driving both investors and companies to shift their focus toward India as an attractive alternative market," Bahl explained.

"Nonetheless, investors must remain cognizant of policy impacts on international trade, especially with China, and expected market fluctuations arising from geopolitical choices," Maurya warned.

However, the policies of Trump are likely to catalyse a robust cycle of investment and development in the country's tech and real estate landscapes.&nbsp;

Emphasising how Trump 2.0 will impact real estate, Samir Bhandari, Co-founder &amp; CFO, hBits - a fractional ownership platform of commercial real estate, said to WION, "As U.S. firms ramp up spending in response to a favourable economic environment, Indian IT companies are likely to benefit from increased demand for services, driving expansion in Global Capability Centres. This growth will not only enhance job creation but also stimulate the commercial real estate sector in tech hubs like Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai."&nbsp;

As the neck-to-neck battle between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris continued in the ongoing US presidential elections, its reflection was felt in the Chinese stock market when shares of companies with names sounding similar to the presidential candidates went up and down absurdly.

The stocks of a Chinese vacuum flask maker rose by 10 per cent in the Chinese market after a Des Moines Register poll indicated that Harris was leading by 3 percentage points in Iowa which has been a Republican-voting state. The reason behind the rise in the stock was the name of the company "Haersi" which has a stark resemblance with the Democratic candidate's name.

Meanwhile, the shares of an aviation technology company Wisesoft fell by 10 per cent because its Chinese name Chuanda Zhisheng distantly means ‘Trump victory’.

According to analysts, such reasons behind stocks rallying in the Chinese stock market show the structural problems within it which makes it a problem to carry out long-term value investments.

In an ongoing saga that has captured the attention of investors globally, the Adani Group has reacted firmly to allegations made by US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research. The accusations revolve around the freezing of $310 million in Swiss bank accounts linked to the conglomerate, as detailed by The Economic Times in a report. The Adani Group has categorically stated that the allegations are baseless, with their spokesperson asserting, "Our overseas holding structure is transparent, fully disclosed, and compliant with all relevant laws."<o:p></o:p>

Adani Group’s full press release <o:p></o:p>

The Adani Group came out with a response against the most recent allegations from Hindenburg Research through a press release on September 12. The complete press release is as follows:<o:p></o:p>

"We unequivocally reject and deny the baseless allegations presented. The Adani Group has no involvement in any Swiss court proceedings, nor have any of our company accounts been subject to sequestration by any authority," the Adani Group said in a statement.<o:p></o:p>

"Furthermore, even in the alleged order, the Swiss court has neither mentioned our group companies, nor have we received any requests for clarification or information from any such authority or regulatory body. We reiterate that our overseas holding structure is transparent, fully disclosed, and compliant with all relevant laws," the Adani Group said.<o:p></o:p>

"These allegations are clearly preposterous, irrational, and absurd. We have no hesitation in stating that this is yet another orchestrated and egregious attempt by the same cohorts acting in unison to inflict irreversible damage on our group's reputation and market value," it said.<o:p></o:p>

"The Adani Group remains steadfastly committed to transparency and compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. We strongly condemn this effort and urge you to refrain from publishing this story. Should you decide to proceed, we request that you include our statement in full," the Adani Group said.<o:p></o:p>

Details about the allegations against the Adani Group<o:p></o:p>

The allegations date back to a probe initiated in 2021 when the US short-seller accused the conglomerate of utilising opaque offshore entities to manipulate financial operations. According to Hindenburg, Swiss criminal court records detail how an individual associated with Adani invested heavily in questionable BVI, Mauritius, and Bermuda funds that primarily held Adani stock. These assertions have raised significant concerns over the financial practices employed by the company.<o:p></o:p>

Adani Group’s response was against the most recent tweet of Hindenburg Research. The complete tweet is as follows:<o:p></o:p>

“Swiss authorities have frozen more than $310 million in funds across multiple Swiss bank accounts as part of a money laundering and securities forgery investigation into Adani, dating back as early as 2021.”<o:p></o:p>

“Prosecutors detailed how an Adani frontman invested in opaque BVI/Mauritius &amp; Bermuda funds that almost exclusively owned Adani stocks, according to newly released Swiss criminal court records reported by Swiss media outlet”<o:p></o:p>

Swiss authorities investigate alleged wrongdoing<o:p></o:p>

The Swiss authorities, now investigating these claims, have purportedly frozen six bank accounts linked to Gautam Adani. A report published by the Geneva Public Prosecutor's Office states that investigations had commenced well before the first allegations made by Hindenburg in January 2023, which previously accused the Adani Group of using tax havens to evade local market regulations.<o:p></o:p>

Hindenburg-SEBI Showdown<o:p></o:p>

Meanwhile, the controversy deepens as the opposition Congress party has intensified its scrutiny of SEBI chairperson Madhabi Buch, alleging a potential conflict of interest that might influence the ongoing investigations. The party claims that Buch holds a 99 per cent stake in a company providing consultancy services, although both Buch and Adani have denied any wrongdoing.<o:p></o:p>

Buch has rebuffed Hindenburg's claims as "character assassination" and clarified that her investments predate her appointment as SEBI chairperson. She termed Hindenburg's allegations as an attempt at "character assassination" following the regulator's enforcement action and "show cause" notice to the US&nbsp;based shortseller for violating Indian rules. A show cause notice signals an intention to take disciplinary action if satisfactory explanations are not provided.<o:p></o:p>

Buch's term is due to conclude in March next year, and she faces increasing political pressure in the wake of these allegations. As the situation unfolds, global investors will be watching closely to see how this saga develops and what implications it may hold for the Adani Group's operations going forward.

Madhabi Puri Buch and Dhaval Buch have firmly denied recent allegations questioning their integrity, labelling the accusations as false and defamatory in a press release on September 13.&nbsp;

In their statement, the couple described the accusations as “completely false, malicious and defamatory,” stressing that the allegations were "motivated to mislead the public" and designed to “tarnish the reputation of individuals, respected corporates, as well as institutions of the country.”

Further, as the controversy snowballs, Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra has also lodged a formal complaint with the Lokpal against Madhabi Puri Buch, the current chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The complaint, filed on September 11, accuses Buch of improper conduct and engaging in quid pro quo arrangements that allegedly threaten India's national interests. As this is a developing issue it is to be seen how the parties involved respond to the ongoing controversy surrounding the SEBI chief.&nbsp;

Adani Group responds to $310 million allegation amidst ongoing Hindenburg controversy

China is facing a turbulent period. JPMorgan has recently downgraded its outlook for Chinese stocks, citing heightened volatility, growth headwinds, and tepid policy support. This marks a significant shift for JPMorgan, which had previously been bullish on China's prospects.

Emerging markets shift focus away from China

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is facing heightened scrutiny as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has decided to include a review of the regulator's performance in its agenda. This move comes in response to serious allegations made against Sebi's Chairperson, Madhabi Puri Buch, by the US-based firm Hindenburg Research. The committee, led by senior Congress leader K C Venugopal, is expected to summon Buch for questioning regarding these claims as detailed in a report by Indian Express.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

Allegations of offshore investments<o:p></o:p>

The controversy erupted when Hindenburg Research alleged that both Madhabi Buch and her husband, Dhaval Buch, held stakes in obscure offshore entities linked to the Adani Group's alleged money siphoning scandal. The allegations have sparked a wave of political outrage, with opposition parties calling for a parliamentary probe into the matter. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has taken the unusual step of including a review of regulatory bodies established by Act of Parliament in its agenda, a move that has not been seen in recent years.<o:p></o:p>

In response to the allegations, the Buch's issued a joint statement clarifying that their investment in the fund mentioned in the Hindenburg report was made in 2015, prior to Madhabi's appointment as a Whole Time Member of Sebi in 2017 and her subsequent elevation to Chairperson in March 2022. They emphasised that all disclosures and recusal norms have been diligently followed as per Sebi's code of conduct.<o:p></o:p>

Calls for accountability<o:p></o:p>

The growing calls for accountability come as the Congress party held nationwide protests last month, demanding Buch's resignation from her position. The PAC, which is expected to meet several times this month, aims to address the pressing issues surrounding Sebi's governance and effectiveness in protecting investor interests.<o:p></o:p>

The committee's next meeting is scheduled for September 10, where it will discuss various subjects, including a performance audit of the National Rural Drinking Water Programme. However, the inclusion of Sebi's review reflects a significant shift in focus towards regulatory oversight, highlighting the importance of maintaining public trust in financial institutions.<o:p></o:p>

Sebi's role and future implications<o:p></o:p>

As the primary regulator of the securities market in India, Sebi plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency and safeguarding investor interests. The upcoming review by the&nbsp;Public Accounts Committee&nbsp;presents an opportunity for Sebi to address the concerns raised and reaffirm its commitment to effective regulation.<o:p></o:p>

The implications of this scrutiny are significant, not only for Sebi but also for the broader financial landscape in India. As the market continues to evolve, the need for a robust and responsive regulatory framework is paramount. The outcome of the committee's review will likely shape the future direction of Sebi and its ability to navigate the complexities of modern financial markets.<o:p></o:p>

Hence, the Public Accounts Committee's decision to review Sebi's performance amid serious allegations against its chairperson underscores the critical need for accountability and transparency in India's financial regulatory framework. As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the committee's findings and the potential impact on the regulator's operations and reputation.<o:p></o:p>

Volatility to persist until Fed's policy decision: Experts

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has initiated an enquiry into the leak of an anonymous letter dated August 6, which alleged a toxic work culture at the regulatory body according to a report by Moneycontrol.<o:p></o:p>

The decision to investigate the matter came after it was revealed that the SEBI employee associations did not send the letter to the government and, in fact, condemned the external sharing of the letter and its subsequent leak to the media, as it was an "internal issue.”<o:p></o:p>

Further, in a statement issued on September 4, SEBI expressed its belief that "junior officers have been receiving messages from external elements outside their group, effectively instigating them to go to media, go to the Ministry, go to Board, perhaps to serve their own purpose."<o:p></o:p>

The regulator clarified that the letter of August 6, 2024, was not sent by the SEBI employee associations to the government or the media. Instead, it was an anonymous email, and the officers and associations have themselves condemned it and communicated the same to the Human Resources Department (HRD) through emails.<o:p></o:p>

Excerpts from internal emails<o:p></o:p>

To corroborate its stance, SEBI included excerpts from emails sent internally by the SEBI Employee Association (SEA) and the SEBI Association of Legal Officers (SEALS). The SEA Council's email stated, "SEA firmly believes in dialogue and consultation with the management in line with the practice followed by SEBI in the last few years.

SEA forcefully condemns the leaking of internal information to media. It is reiterated that employee grievance is an internal issue which must remain within the organization. It has full faith in its members and the leadership of the organization that all internal issues could be solved amicably."<o:p></o:p>

Similarly, an email by the SEBI Association of Legal Officers stated, "We strongly condemn this and confirm that SEALS does not endorse such demeaning acts by a few unidentified set of staff members. We repose full faith in the organization and its leadership and will continue to do so."

Additionally, an email by officers of SEBI of Grade A/B/C stated, "We, officers of SEBI, condemn such email and any media leaks in strongest terms. We are of the firm view that internal grievances should remain within the organization."<o:p></o:p>

The email further stated, "It appears that someone is trying to further his/her personal agenda. We disassociate ourselves from any such attempts. As SEBI officers, we take pride in the reputation of our organization and are committed towards its betterment. We do not support any act that affects the integrity of this organization."<o:p></o:p>

SEBI's decision to launch an enquiry into the leaked letter and the subsequent response from the employee associations highlight the importance of maintaining a professional and harmonious work environment within the regulatory body.

As the investigation progresses, it will be crucial for SEBI to address any legitimate concerns raised by its employees while ensuring that the integrity and reputation of the organization remain intact. Investors and market participants are going to keep a close eye on the regulator and its next step to try to amicably resolve the internal issues swiftly.&nbsp;

SEBI investigates leaked letter alleging toxic work culture: Report

With an aim to bolster foreign investment, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is re-evaluating its registration requirements for overseas investors interested in Indian government bonds. This initiative, announced by Ananth Narayan, a whole-time member of SEBI, during an industry conference in Mumbai, marks a crucial step in making the Indian bond market more accessible to foreign investors.<o:p></o:p>

Simplifying registration requirements<o:p></o:p>

SEBI is actively examining the possibility of waiving certain registration requirements for investors who are solely interested in investing in Indian government bonds. "We are actively examining if certain SEBI registration requirements can be done away with for those investors investing solely in Indian government bonds," Narayan told Bloomberg News.<o:p></o:p>

This move is part of SEBI's broader strategy to enhance the ease of doing business for foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and to draw in high-quality overseas savings.<o:p></o:p>

Rising interest in Indian bonds<o:p></o:p>

The month of August saw a record high of $2.8 billion in net inflows into index-eligible bonds, the highest since JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. included Indian bonds in its flagship emerging market gauge last year.<o:p></o:p>

This inclusion has increased India's weight in the index from 3 per cent to a projected 10 per cent by March 2025, significantly boosting interest from foreign investors.<o:p></o:p>

Analysts from Morgan Stanley attribute the increased net flows to Indian bonds to several factors, including the rising weight in the emerging market index, the conclusion of election-related uncertainties, and market expectations of a possible Fed rate cut in the upcoming month. These factors have collectively contributed to a more favorable investment climate for foreign investors.<o:p></o:p>

Enhanced support for foreign portfolio investors<o:p></o:p>

To further encourage foreign investment, SEBI is considering an easier application process for sovereign wealth funds and public retail funds that are typically exempt from additional disclosures when seeking registration in India. This move aims to reduce the bureaucratic hurdles faced by these investors, making it more appealing for them to invest in the Indian bond market.<o:p></o:p>

In addition, SEBI has established a dedicated cell to assist foreign portfolio investors. This cell has already reached out to over 500 investors and serves as a window to address any issues that may arise during the registration process. "Ensuring ease of doing investments for FPIs to draw in good quality overseas savings remains a top priority for us," Narayan emphasized.<o:p></o:p>

Further as India continues to emerge as a key player in the global financial landscape, these strategic adjustments by SEBI are poised to make the Indian bond market more attractive to foreign investors. By streamlining the registration process and providing dedicated support, SEBI is sending a clear message that it is committed to fostering a conducive environment for foreign investment.<o:p></o:p>

This initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate India more deeply into global financial markets. With the increasing weight of Indian bonds in emerging market indices and the ongoing simplification of regulatory processes, India is set to become an even more significant destination for foreign capital in the coming years.<o:p></o:p>

Hence, SEBI's decision to ease the registration process for foreign investors in Indian government bonds is a significant step forward in attracting more foreign investment. As the Indian economy continues to grow and integrate into global markets, these measures will play a crucial role in ensuring that the country remains an attractive and accessible destination for overseas investors.<o:p></o:p>
