At the interbank forex market, the rupee opened higher at 71.94, and advanced 10 paise to 71.87 against the US dollar.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose 96.29 points, or 0.28 per cent, to 35,356.83 in early session Friday.

The Sensex opened higher and advanced further to scale the day's high of 35,545.85, but settled at 35,457.16 points, a gain of 196.62 points, or 0.56 per cent, due to profit-taking activity.

This is the highest closing since October 17, when it had closed at 34,779.58. The gauge had risen 119 points in Thursday's trade.

The 50-share NSE Nifty settled 65.50 points, or 0.62 per cent higher, at 10,682.20 after shuttling between 10,695.15 and 10,631.15.

Meanwhile, the rupee was trading higher by 25 paise at 71.72 against the American currency (intra-day) Friday.

Positive leads from other Asian markets tracking overnight gains at Wall Street also boosted investor sentiment.

Brent crude, the international benchmark fell 0.47 per cent to $ 65.81 per barrel.

The BSE 30-share Sensex after resuming a tad higher at 34,846.90 quickly slipped into the negative zone to touch a low of 34,672.20, largely in sync with global sell-off.

However, hectic buying in late afternoon trade reversed the day's losses and helped the Sensex hit a high of 35,185.17 before settling 331.50 points, or 0.95 per cent, higher at 35,144.49.

The gauge had lost 425 points in the previous two sessions.

The broader NSE Nifty after shuttling between 10,451.90 and 10,595.75 finally concluded 100.30 points, or 0.96 per cent, higher at 10,582.50.

Domestic market sentiments were upbeat about the fall in consumer inflation data for October.

Retail inflation fell to a one-year low of 3.31 per cent in October on the back of cheaper kitchen staples, fruits and protein-rich items, official data released Monday showed.

The industrial production measured in terms of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) was 4.1 per cent in September 2017.

A divided Congress, however, is perceived as negative for the dollar, analysts said, because it is unlikely that any new fiscal stimulus could be launched to counterbalance forecasts of slowing US&nbsp;economic growth next year.

A Democratic sweep of Congress could also undermine the dollar, if it leads to complete gridlock in Washington DC&nbsp;as it raises the risk of government shutdowns and suggests a more volatile political environment ahead of the 2020 US&nbsp;presidential election.

Bonds

Should Democrats take one or both chambers of Congress, further efforts to change the tax code would likely stall, but Democrats may be unable to roll back the Republican tax cuts enacted last December or to increase spending on social programs.

As a result the federal deficit will be unlikely to grow at a faster rate or require additional borrowing than is currently forecast and this could be mildly positive for bond prices.

“We are looking for a split government which means nothing will get done,” said Gennadiy Goldberg, interest rate strategist at TD Securities in New York.

One caveat: If a split government leads to a government shutdown as a negotiation tool, it could spur safe-haven bids for US&nbsp;Treasuries.

If Republicans retain their edge in Congress, the fiscal outlook is complicated by how they will tackle the budget deficit.

They might attempt more tax changes which can increase the deficit. Any changes may be offset by efforts to cut entitlement programs or to end the Affordable Care Act though the net impact on federal borrowing is unclear.

Besides, disappointing quarterly earnings by Maruti Suzuki and a few other companies also dampened sentiments.

Meanwhile, on a net basis, foreign funds sold shares worth Rs 1,495.71 crore, while domestic institutional investors bought shares to the tune of Rs 339.60 crore Thursday, provisional data showed.

In the Sensex pack besides, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Adani Ports, Reliance, the rest of the companies were trading in the negative territory.

However, emergence of selling in the last one hour of trading, it slipped into the negative zone to hit a low of 34,082.76 before ending at 34,134.38, registering a fall of 181.25 points or 0.53 per cent.

The index had lost 847 points in the previous two sessions on liquidity concerns as well as weak global cues.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty after shuttling between 10,408.65 and 10,224 points, ended 58.30 points, or 0.57 per cent, lower at 10,245.25.

Brokers said sentiments remained weak on macro concerns such as prevailing liquidity crunch in the market despite the RBI's measures to improve the situation in the market and rising crude prices.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, again went past the&nbsp;$ 80-mark to quote USD 80.14 per barrel on Monday.

Besides, unabated capital outflows by foreign funds, dampened sentiments, they added.

The 30-share Sensex stayed in the positive zone during the session and shuttled between 35,215.79 and 34,913.06, before settling 297.38 points or 0.85 per cent higher at 35,162.48.

The NSE Nifty after regaining the 10,600-mark hit a high of 10,604.90 on the back of widespread gains, and finally concluded 72.25 points or 0.69 per cent higher at 10,584.75.

Sensex slips 71 points on negative economic data, weak rupee

The BSE benchmark Sensex staged a strong comeback by recovering over 600 points in opening trade Friday following fresh purchases made by domestic investors ahead of key macroeconomic data to be released later in the day, fall in global crude prices and rupee recovery.

Positive leads from most other Asian markets too fuelled the uptrend.

The 30-share Sensex climbed 639.80 points, or 1.88 per cent, to 34,640.95 with all the sectoral indices trading in the positive zone.

The gauge had plummeted over 750 points to end at a six-month low.

The NSE Nifty was trading above the 10,400-mark, up 174.30 points, or 1.70 per cent, at 10,408.95.

Meanwhile, the rupee strengthened by 38 paise to 73.74 against the US dollar in early trade in the forex market after global crude prices eased.

Brokers said besides rupee recovery, built-up of positions by investors ahead of index of industrial production (IIP) numbers for August and inflation data for September - to be released later in the day - too impacted investor sentiment here.

In the Sensex pack, prominent gainers were M&amp;M, Yes Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Adani Ports, IndusInd Bank, Vedanta, Asian Paints, RIL, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, ITC, Hero MotoCorp, Coal India, Axis Bank, Kotak Bank, HDFC Bank, Sun Pharma, HDFC and Bajaj Auto, rising up to 4.08 per cent.

However, shares of country's largest software exporter TCS fell 2.13 per cent even after the company Thursday reported a 22.6 per cent jump in consolidated net profit at Rs 7,901 crore in the July-September 2018 quarter.

Shares of oil marketing companies such as HPCL, BPCL and IOC remained strong and rose further by up to 5.33 per cent on falling global crude oil prices.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell 3 per cent to quote at USD 80.37 a barrel. 
Stocks of Aviation companies - Spicejet, InterGlobe and Jet Airways - too were in better shape, rising up to 5.02 per cent, supported by falling crude prices.

In the Sensex pack, prominent gainers were M&M, Yes Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Adani Ports, IndusInd Bank, Vedanta, Asian Paints, RIL, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, ITC, Hero MotoCorp, Coal India, Axis Bank, Kotak Bank, HDFC Bank, Sun Pharma, HDFC and Bajaj Auto, rising up to 4.08 per cent. However, shares of country's largest software exporter TCS fell 2.13 per cent even after the company Thursday reported a 22.6 per cent jump in consolidated net profit at Rs 7,901 crore in the July-September 2018 quarter. Shares of oil marketing companies such as HPCL, BPCL and IOC remained strong and rose further by up to 5.33 per cent on falling global crude oil prices. Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell 3 per cent to quote at USD 80.37 a barrel. Stocks of Aviation companies - Spicejet, InterGlobe and Jet Airways - too were in better shape, rising up to 5.02 per cent, supported by falling crude prices. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) made purchases worth a net of Rs 1,888 crore Thursday, provisional data showed. Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 1.11 per cent, Singapore rose 0.18 per cent, and Taiwan gained 1.17 per cent in their late morning deals. Across the globe, share markets sank in a sea of red on Thursday after Wall Street suffered its worst drubbing in months, as fears over rising US Treasury yields sparked a broad sell-off of risky assets.

The 30-scrip gauge had lost 2,149.15 points in the previous three straight sessions.

The 50-share NSE Nifty too recovered by 31.60 points, or 0.31 per cent, to end at 10,348.05. During the session, it moved between 10,198.40 and 10,398.35.

Besides value buying, covering-up of short positions by investors also aided the recovery in the market.

Shares of Tesla Inc dived 11 per cent in early trading on Friday after US&nbsp;regulators accused Chief Executive Elon Musk of fraud and sought to remove him from his role in charge of the electric car company.

The US&nbsp;Securities and Exchange Commission said in a lawsuit that Musk had made a series of false and misleading statements and caused volatility in the company's shares with tweets last month which raised the potential of taking Tesla private before swiftly withdrawing the idea.

Musk, 47, is the public face of Tesla and JP&nbsp;Morgan analyst Ryan Brinkman questioned how easy it would be for the $50-billion manufacturer, which is still losing money, to raise funds at affordable rates without him.

"We are concerned that decreased confidence in Tesla on the part of investors may impact the company's ability to raise capital on amenable terms," Brinkman said.

Four early research notes from Wall Street analysts and brokerages all said that Musk might have to resign.

The Silicon Valley billionaire said overnight he had done nothing wrong and Tesla's board reiterated its support for him.

"The SEC civil action may lead to Musk's exit from Tesla (either permanently or temporarily) and the Musk premium in the shares dissipating," Barclays analyst Brian Johnson said.

Shares were last down 10.8 pct at $274.17 in trading before the bell in New York, which would wipe about $6 billion off Tesla's market value.

Gene Munster, managing partner at venture capital firm Loup Ventures, said the lawsuit adds further distraction at a critical 6-month juncture in the company's viability.

"Despite this, we think the company will survive," he said.

The SEC's lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, caps a tumultuous two months set in motion on August 7 when Musk told his more than 22 million Twitter followers that he might take Tesla private at $420 per share, with "funding secured".

The regulator charged that Musk "knew or was reckless in not knowing" that his tweets were false and misleading.

Jeffrey Osborne, an analyst at brokerage Cowen, said investing in Tesla equity and bonds over the past few weeks had been "a game of choose your own adventure".

"The ball is in the Board's court now and it remains to be seen what will happen next," he said.

Markets end in red for 2nd day, Sensex sheds 43 points

The Sensex and Nifty rose slightly on Tuesday, helped by index heavyweight Larsen & Toubro Ltd on strong quarterly results and oil firms on declining crude prices.

However, gains were limited as financials declined. The NSE Bank Index slipped as much as 0.7 per cent after three straight sessions of gain, with ICICI Bank shedding nearly 2 percent.

"It's the continuation of Monday`s rally," said Hitesh Agarwal, EVP and head – retail research, Religare Broking.

"Correction in oil prices in the past couple of days have been a sentiment booster. However, it still remains a concern, hovering around $75 a barrel, as fuel prices are already very high," he said, adding that corporate earnings had been pretty good so far.

The broader Nifty was up 0.2 percent at 10,709.85 as of 0606 GMT, while the Sensex rose 0.13 percent to 35,212.50.

Shares of Larsen & Toubro rose as much as 3.5 per cent to their highest since Feb. 2, after the industrial group posted a 4.7 percent rise in quarterly net profit on Monday.

Shares of oil and gas companies extended their rally, with the Nifty Energy index rising for a third session in a row.&nbsp

Oil prices remained under pressure from expectations that Saudi Arabia and Russia would pump more crude to ease a potential shortfall in supply.&nbsp

Indian shares ended higher on Thursday as IT stocks such as Infosys Ltd and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) gained on the back of a weaker rupee.

Sensex up 126 points on Asian cues

The stock market on Wednesday saw a boom in the morning as Karnataka elections prevail with BSE Sensex opening around 20 points in the negative but made it to the green zone.&nbsp;

At 9.30 am, Sensex was up more than 260 points at 35,759.40. The broader NSE Nifty also jumped 70.50 points, or 0.65 per cent, to 10,877.10.

Overseas, markets in Asia were trading mixed as investors assessed the outlook for trade relations between the US and China and tensions in the Middle East.&nbsp;

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 717.99 crore while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 687.23 crore yesterday, as per provisional data.

Also, &nbsp;the rupee declined by 28 paise to a fresh 16-month low of 67.79 against the dollar in early trade today amid gains in the US currency overseas.

Forex dealers said the dollar strengthened against major global currencies today, having pulled up from its lowest level in more than a week as hopes for easing global trade tensions pushed US bond yields higher.

Early losses in stock markets and demand for the US currency from importers also weighed on the local unit, they added. 
Yesterday, the rupee had lost 18 paise to end at a fresh 16-month low of 67.51 against the US currency on heavy dollar purchases and sustained fund outflows from equities.

At 9.30 am, Sensex was up more than 200 points at 35,759.40. The broader 50-share NSE Nifty too was gaining more than half a per cent and had gone past 10,850-mark

The stock market on Wednesday saw a boom in the morning as Karnataka elections prevail with BSE Sensex opening around 20 points in the negative but made it to the green zone.
