The BSE index opened with a gain of 84 points on 36,048.99 while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty started trading on 11,044.55, with a modest 17 points jump. Both the indices extended gains and were up by 0.40 per cent in initial trading.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex), was trading 157.21 points or 0.44 per cent higher soon after opening.

The wider 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was also trading 46.25 points or 0.42 per cent higher at 11,073.95 points.

Sensex rises 150 points ahead of Budget 2018, Nifty above 11,050

Benchmarks buckled under heavy selling pressure today as wary investors pocketed gains in recent winners ahead of the Union Budget amid lacklustre global leads.

The BSE Sensex sank about 250 points to end at 36,033.73, while the broader NSE Nifty dropped 80 points to 11,049.65.

Brokers said investors took money off the table and held back fresh bets ahead of the Union Budget on February 1.

Market sentiment was also impacted as other Asian markets retreated from record highs, tracking overnight meltdown at the Wall Street after a sell-off in Apple shares.

Investors were also cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve&#39;s two-day monetary policy meeting beginning today.

The 30-share Sensex, after opening a shade lower at 36,277.12, continued its slide to crack the 36,000-mark and hit a low of 35,993.41 during the day. It finally settled at 36,033.73, down 249.52 points, or 0.69 per cent.

The index had gained 232.81 points yesterday and closed at a record high of 36,283.25.

The Nifty too closed lower by 80.75 points, or 0.73 per cent, at 11,049.65 after hitting a low of 11,033.90.

It had ended at a lifetime high of 11,130.40 yesterday.

&quot;Market slid followed by weaknesses in global markets while investors are likely to utilise the correction as improving domestic macros coupled with earnings growth will benefit in the long run.

Asian Paints was the worst performer among the Sensex components by falling 2.22 per cent, followed by Kotak Mahindra Bank at 2.20 per cent.

Other laggards were Axis Bank, Dr Reddy&#39;s, Adani Ports, Reliance Industries, Wipro, ICICI Bank, TCS, Yes Bank, HDFC Ltd, Infosys, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, NTPC, ONGC, Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel, ITC and HDFC Bank.

Bucking the trend, Coal India, Hero MotoCorp, Sun Pharma, SBI, IndusInd Bank, HUL and Power Grid finished with gains of up to 1.71 per cent.

Reliance Communications soared 10.46 per cent after the company reported narrowing of consolidated loss to Rs 130 crore for the quarter ended December 2017.

Sector-wise, the BSE consumer durables index was the weakest of the lost, dropping 1.74 per cent, followed by IT 1.07 per cent, teck 1.02 per cent, bankex 0.85 per cent, realty 0.80 per cent, metal 0.63 per cent, healthcare 0.61 per cent, infrastructure 0.56 per cent, auto 0.48 per cent, capital goods 0.36 per cent and FMCG 0.33 per cent.

Oil &amp; gas and PSU indices managed to close in the green.

The broader markets continued to face selling pressure, which pulled down the small-cap index by 1.34 per cent and mid-cap by 0.67 per cent.

Overseas, European stocks were trading lower following sharp losses in Asian bourses and on Wall Street. Key indices like Frankfurt&#39;s DAX was down by 0.35 per cent, while Paris CAC 40 shed 0.19 per cent in their late morning deals. London&#39;s FTSE fell 0.42 per cent.

Sensex, Nifty tumble from record highs ahead of Budget

Benchmark Sensex zoomed 233 points to end at yet another record high today after the Economic Survey said India will re-establish itself as the world&#39;s fastest growing major economy with GDP expanding by 7-7.5 per cent in 2018-19.

The beginning of February derivatives contracts and unabated foreign fund inflows amid a higher opening of European markets added to the optimism, brokers said.

The 30-share barometer, after opening on a strong footing on optimistic buying by participants, gathered momentum to touch an all-time high of 36,443.98.

However, it shed some ground on profit-booking, before finally finishing at 36,283.25, up by 232.81 points, or 0.65 per cent -- surpassing its previous record closing of 36,161.64 hit on January 24.

The 50-share NSE Nifty too closed at a fresh life high of 11,130.40 points, up 60.75 points, or 0.55 per cent. 
It broke its previous closing record of 11,086 reached on January 24.

The Economic Survey for 2017-18 said the GDP will grow on the back of major reforms which would be strengthened further in the next financial year.

The pre-budget survey pointed out that India can be rated as among the best performing economies in the world as the average growth during last three years is around 4 percentage points higher than global growth and nearly 3 percentage points higher than that of emerging markets and developing economies.

The rupee gained 10 paise to trade at over 2-1/2 year high of 63.31 against the US dollar in early session today on increased selling of the American currency by exporters and banks.

Besides, stock markets opened with gains and sustained foreign fund inflows also supported the domestic unit, forex dealers said.

The dollar&#39;s weakness against some currencies overseas also supported the rupee&#39;s upmove.

The rupee opened higher at 63.35 a dollar and moved to a high of 63.31 a dollar in early trade.

The rupee yesterday bounced back to end at a fresh 2-1/2 year high of 63.41, gaining by 12 paise against the US dollar on optimism over a brightening economic picture.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose 100.48 points, or 0.29 per cent, to 34,070.12 in early trade.

SBI dropped the most by over 1 per cent among Sensex scrips. Hindustan Unilever, Kotak Bank and Asian Paints also dropped up to 1 per cent.

Stocks failed to hold onto gains after positive core industry data. Infra sector grew at the fastest pace in more than a year at 6.8 per cent in November 2017 on the back of robust performance in segments like refinery, steel and cement.

The big gainers that supported the Sensex include ONGC, NTPC, Coal India, Dr Reddy&#39;s, HDFC Bank, IndusInd Bank, and Bharti Airtel, rising by up to 1.87 per cent.

Sensex begins 2018 on negative note, down 18 points

The Nifty reclaimed the 10,500-mark and BSE barometer Sensex was back in the green today ahead of the expiry of December derivatives contracts.

At the start, the 50-share Nifty climbed to 10,515.90, up 25.15 points, or 0.23 per cent.

The 30-share BSE index made a modest gain of 63.24 points, or 0.18 per cent, at 33,975.05. It had lost 98.80 points in the previous session.

All sectoral gauges led by metal and healthcare rose up to 1.07 per cent.

Fresh buying by investors in blue-chip stocks amid foreign capital inflows kept the momentum going. The leads from Wall street were positive, but Asian shares were little changed after an oil rally.

The Reserve Bank of India is expected to go in for a policy rate cut of 25 bps in April next year to signal lower lending rates, which are key to the economic recovery, stated a global brokerage report.

Today is the last session of December expiry in the derivatives segment.

Major gainers were Tata Steel, HUL and Sun Pharma, advancing up to 1.51 per cent.

The Nifty reclaimed the 10,500-mark and BSE barometer Sensex was back in the green today ahead of the expiry of December derivatives contracts. At the start, the 50-share Nifty climbed to 10,515.90, up 25.15 points, or 0.23 per cent. The 30-share BSE index made a modest gain of 63.24 points, or 0.18 per cent, at 33,975.05. It had lost 98.80 points in the previous session. All sectoral gauges led by metal and healthcare rose up to 1.07 per cent. Fresh buying by investors in blue-chip stocks amid foreign capital inflows kept the momentum going. The leads from Wall street were positive, but Asian shares were little changed after an oil rally. The Reserve Bank of India is expected to go in for a policy rate cut of 25 bps in April next year to signal lower lending rates, which are key to the economic recovery, stated a global brokerage report. Today is the last session of December expiry in the derivatives segment. Major gainers were Tata Steel, HUL and Sun Pharma, advancing up to 1.51 per cent.

Major movers were Sun Pharma, NTPC, ONGC and Tata Motors, gaining up to 2.88 per cent.

Buying by domestic institutional investors continued ahead of December expiry tomorrow.

Opinion: Why you should invest in stock market

The stock market today inched closer to the all-time intra-day high as the BJP sniffed victory in Gujarat and also stayed on course to take power from the Congress in Himachal Pradesh.

According to trends available on the Election Commission&#39;s website, the BJP is leading in 101 of the 182 assembly segments in Gujarat. As for Himachal Pradesh, it is leading in 40 seats as against the Congress&#39; 21.

The 30-share BSE index hit a high of 33,724.08 at 1152 hrs, a gain of 261.11 points -- 0.78 per cent. The reading is closer to the all-time high 33,865.95, reached on November 7.

For the 50-share Nifty, the reading was above the key 10,400-mark at 10,415.50, up 82.25 points, or 0.80 per cent.

Early in the beginning of the session, the benchmark BSE Sensex had tanked as much as 867 points to breach below the psychological 33,000-mark while the NSE Nifty plunged 258 points within one hour of counting of votes.

However, evolving equations showed that the BJP is pushing ahead in both the states.

Metal, auto, healthcare, realty, and banks all showed up in the green.

The big mover was M&amp;M 2.93 per cent, with SBI and Adani Ports closely following the leader.

The data failed to lift sentiment after India reported its fiscal deficit reached 96 percent of the budgeted target for the fiscal year ending in March 2018, sending shares sharply lower on Thursday. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is also meeting next week at a time of rising concern about a rally in crude prices, which rose following OPEC`s decision to extend production curbs.

Nearly all analysts expect the central bank to keep rates on hold.&nbsp;

&quot;Since there was a sharp run-up in the markets last week, there is a bit of profit-booking. Even though the GDP number is along expected lines, there is concern building up on the fiscal deficit front,&quot; said Hitesh Agarwal, EVP &amp; Head &ndash; Retail Research, Religare Securities Ltd.

The broader NSE Nifty was down 0.15 percent at 10,211.40 as of 0644 GMT, while the benchmark BSE Sensex was 0.12 percent lower at 33,108.34. Both indexes were down around 1.7 percent for the week, heading for their biggest weekly loss since late September.

Sensex slips as fiscal deficit concerns weigh; banks fall

London`s stock market fell on Friday, bucking an upwards trend elsewhere, as `Black Friday` price-slashing wooed customers but was expected to hurt the bottom line of Britain`s biggest retailers.

So-called Black Friday, the now-traditional day of steep discounts in the run-up to Christmas, failed to boost share prices of retailers partly owing to fierce competition from online giants like Amazon, dealers said.

The mood in London soured also on news that British consumer confidence, tracked by pollsters YouGov and researchers the Centre for Economics and Business Research, has slumped to the lowest level since just after last year`s shock Brexit referendum.

&quot;With sales rising at the expense of margins, there is a strong possibility that we will see retailers` profitability suffer despite rising revenues,&quot; Joshua Mahony, an analyst at IG trading group, said regarding the impact of Black Friday.

&quot;Unfortunately, while billions will be spent in the UK today, we have seen UK consumer confidence hit the lowest level since the EU referendum, paving the way for what could be a disappointing holiday season for retailers,&quot; he added.

In late morning deals, London`s FTSE index was down 0.3 per cent in value compared with Thursday`s close.

Shares in clothing retailer Next slid 1.39 per cent to 4,324 pence and rival Marks &amp; Spencer shed 0.2 per cent to 298.10 pence.

Britain`s biggest retailer, supermarket giant Tesco, dropped 0.13 per cent to 193.80 pence and peer Sainsbury`s lost 0.17 per cent to 228.40 pence.

Industry forecasts suggest UK shoppers will spend some &pound;7.8 billion ($10.3 billion, 8.8 billion euros) over the four-day period from Black Friday to so-called Cyber Monday - when online retailers deliver even more steep discounts.

French election result revs up global stocks; Nasdaq touches 6,000

The NSE Nifty hit a record high while the rupee rose to its strongest level in nearly 17-months on Thursday after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates as expected but signalled no pick-up in the pace of tightening.&nbsp;

The NSE Nifty rose as much as 0.64 per cent to a record high of 9,143 points, and was up 0.59 per cent as of 0350 GMT. The benchmark BSE Sensex was up 0.55 per cent.

The partially convertible rupee hit as much as 65.2250 per dollar, its strongest since October 30, 2015. It was last trading at 65.32/33 compared to its 65.71/72 close.

Meanwhile the benchmark 10-year bond yield fell 4 basis points to 6.79 per cent.
