Domestic stock market indices edged higher in volatile trade on Wednesday, as Reliance Industries Ltd gained on the back of a bounce in oil prices.&nbsp;

At 11:15 am, the S&amp;P BSE Sensex was down over 100 points, or 0.28%, at 35,534.38 levels. The NSE Nifty too cracked 46.20 points, or 0.44%, to 10,405.25.

Petrol price at Rs 70.29, reduced by Rs 2.69. Diesel price at Rs 63.01, reduced by Rs 2.33.

The rupee recovered 33 paise to 73.84 against US dollar in early trade on Wednesday amid positive opening in domestic equities and weakening of the American dollar in the overseas market.

The Rupee had fallen to a 17-month low of 74.17 against the US dollar amid mounting fears of a coronavirus-led economic slowdown.

The forex market was closed on Tuesday on account of Holi.

On a net basis, foreign institutional investors (FPIs) sold equities worth Rs 2,476.75 crore, while domestic institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 2,510.89 crore on Thursday, data available with stock exchanges showed.

Shares of Yes Bank tanked 25 per cent after the capital-starved lender was placed under a moratorium, with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) capping deposit withdrawals at Rs 50,000 per account for a month and superseding its board.

Yes Bank will not be able to grant or renew any loan or advance, make any investment, incur any liability or agree to disburse any payment. 
The rare move, made by the RBI and the government, came hours after finance ministry sources confirmed that State Bank of India (SBI) was directed to bail out the troubled lender.

SBI cracked over 6 per cent, and was among the top losers on Sensex. IndusInd Bank, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank and Ultratech Cement were also in the red.

According to traders, investor sentiment was hit by intense selling in global equities as heightened volatility on concerns over the economic impact of coronavirus on world economies plagued markets.

At 12:05 pm, the Sensex was trading at 38,478.44, lower by 1,267.22 points or 3.19% from the previous close of 39,746 points while the Nifty 50 was down by 375 points to 11,257.

Meanwhile, Indian Rupee tumbled to 71.93 vs 71.55 previous close, against the US dollar. The fall was in line with Asian peers.

In the previous session, the Sensex settled lower by 143.30 points or 0.36 per cent to 39,745.66.Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 settled at 11,633.30, lower by 45.20 points or 0.39 per cent.&nbsp;

According to analysts, intense spread of coronavirus is pushing investors away. There is sharp foreign fund outflow led by strong dollar index, as investors reduce their exposure to emerging markets amid global uncertainty.

Carnage on Dalal Street: Stock market crash wipes off Rs 5 lakh cr investor wealth

Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar expressed surprise over the stock market reacting negatively on the Budget proposals, saying investors probably expected some big bang reforms and ignored the initiatives towards investment and growth.

Kumar in an interview to PTI said the Budget has done nothing wrong, and it has "ticked all the boxes".

Giving a thumbs down to the Budget, the market benchmark Sensex logged its biggest single-day plunge in more than a decade, wiping out Rs 3.46 lakh crore investor wealth.

"I am actually quite surprised by the market's reactions yesterday, going down 1,000 points. I was trying to understand why did that happen," he wondered.

Kumar added that "... The Budget does nothing wrong, it has got nothing anti-private investment or anti-private sector or anti-growth, the Budget is ticking all the boxes".

Probably, the market was expecting some big bang reforms that are associated with huge push for consumption as was witnessed in the aftermath of Lehman Brothers crisis in 2008.

"So my own thought was that market expected so called big bang reforms and by big bang reforms, normally everybody understands in India, a huge impetus for consumption. And I think the best example of that was in 2008 Budget which preceded the Lehman Brothers crisis," he said.

Pointing out that the UPA-1 gave lot of sops in 2008 Budget because elections were due, Kumar said it had resulted in ballooning of the fiscal deficit to 6 per cent in 2009 from 2.5 per cent.

"If the market had expected that kind of consumption boost without any regard to fiscal discipline, it was not possible," he said adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was very clear that Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) target should not be breached.

"Therefore, if you notice, we used 0.5 per cent escape clause (under FRBM) and remained within that," Kumar stressed.

Asked if it is still possible to achieve USD 5 trillion target by 2024-25, the eminent economist said it is not an unreal goal and will be achieved.

"In the next 5 years, there is no reason to believe that you can't achieve that unless rupee depreciates out of the blue etc. If you do 6-6.5 per cent (growth) now(2020-21), and jump up to 7-8 per cent (growth) in remaining four years, you will achieve that, that's not an unreal target," he said.

Moreover, Kumar said, the Prime Minister has mentioned it as a inspirational target, more to drive the people together.

"And I think, we should keep that intact. Any revision will only create massive discouragement, and not push the people, especially in government to go towards that," the Niti Aayog vice chairman observed.

On the finance minister's decision to increase customs duty on certain products, Kumar said he was always a votary of trade liberalisation.

"I hope ...It (hike of custom duty on certain products) is a temporary measure to provide relief to Indian industry which is feeling very threatened with the Chinese imports, and hopefully enough will be done by the industry and the government to give them kind of competitiveness so that they will be able to stand up against (Chinese) imports without the support," he said.

Kumar further said that trade restriction "does not work quite often, it boomerangs, the shorter it stays the better it is".

On the criticism that the government has not done anything for job creation in the Budget, he said that all investment enhancing measures announced will lead to employment generation.&nbsp;

"There was a reinforcement of weak manufacturing activity and then you had the geopolitical spark," said Michael Antonelli, market strategist at Robert W. Baird in Milwaukee. "That's on top of the sentiment that the market has been overbought."

S&amp;P&nbsp;500&nbsp;bank stocks dropped 1.6 per cent&nbsp;as the news sent benchmark US&nbsp;bond yields&nbsp;to their lowest since December&nbsp;12.

Shares of airlines also tumbled as oil prices jumped about 3 per cent. American Airlines Group Inc&nbsp;shares dropped 5.0 per cent, while shares of United Airlines Holdings Inc fell 2.1 per cent.

In a sign of investor jitters, US&nbsp;stocks extended their fall following a false report of an attack on a US&nbsp;military base in Iraq.

However, strength in oil prices, which were at three-month highs, sent shares of state-run oil marketing companies lower. Hindustan Petroleum Corp and Bharat Petroleum Corp inched 0.6% and 0.27% lower, respectively.

At 10:0 am, the Sensex traded 40.47 points - or 0.10 per cent - higher at 40,485.62 while the Nifty was up by 7.65 points - or 0.064 per cent - at 11,929.15.

Earlier, in the morning Nifty Auto, Nifty Metal and Nifty Media indices were all trading over 1 per cent higher, the Bank Nifty was largely flat while Nifty FMCG and Nifty IT indices slipped around 0.5 per cent.

Equity benchmark indices were largely flat during early hours on Wednesday following gloomy global trends after US President Donald Trump said a trade deal with China may have to wait until after the 2020 presidential election.

At 10:15 am, the BSE S &amp; P Sensex was up by 90 points to 40,766 while the Nifty 50 edged higher by 20 points at 12,014. Except for Nifty metal which slipped by nearly 1 per cent, all other sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the green with thin margins.

Among stocks, Bharti Infratel gained by 3.5 per cent to Rs 257.10 per share while Tata Motors ticked up by 3 per cent. Private lenders ICICI Bank and Axis Bank showed gains of 1.4 per cent and 0.9 per cent. 
The other prominent gainers were Eicher Motors, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services, Adani Ports, ONGC and Hindustan Lever.

However, metal stocks lost shine with JSW Steel dropping by 2.7 per cent, Tata Steel by 1.3 per cent, Hindalco by 0.8 per cent and Vedanta by 0.5 per cent. Reliance Industries was down by 0.7 per cent to Rs 1,567.60 per share.

Meanwhile, Asian shares extended their losses after US President Donald Trump dashed hopes for a quick preliminary agreement with China on trade tariffs, saying the deal may have to wait until after the 2020 presidential election.

Fresh US tariffs on Argentina and Brazil, as well as threatened duties on French goods, also darkened the mood. MSCI's broadest index of AsiaPacific shares outside Japan fell by 0.9 per cent.

Japan's Nikkei dropped by 1.2 per cent, matched by falls in Hong Kong and South Korea where stock markets hit their lowest since October.

Trump on Monday said he would impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Brazil and Argentina, attacking what he saw as both countries' "massive devaluation of their currencies."

Meanwhile, investors back home were hopeful of a sixth rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) this year, after a Reuters poll last week said the bank may cut rates by 25 basis points at its policy meeting later this week.

The expectations for a rate-cut comes as India's economic growth slowed to a six-year low at 4.5 per cent&nbsp;for the July-September period.

Metal stocks were lower as most industrial metal prices came under pressure due to Trump's tariffs move. The Nifty metals index fell 2.04 per cent.

Steelmakers Tata Steel and JSW Steel were among the top losers on the Nifty, dropping about 1.45 per cent&nbsp;each, while Britannia Industries gained about 1.42 per cent.

On Saturday, US national security adviser Robert O'Brien had said an initial trade deal with China was still possible by the end of 2019 as a result&nbsp;Indian shares rose yesterday, led by metals and real estate stocks, while gains in broader Asia on hopes of progress in the US-China trade talks also boosted sentiment.&nbsp;

On Monday, Bharti Airtel was the biggest gainer in the Sensex pack with a rise of 7.20 per cent in its share value after telecom companies moved to Supreme Court regarding payment of Rs 92,000 crore dues to Department of Telecom.&nbsp;

Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC, Maruti and Tata Motors were the major gainers in the Sensex pack on Monday. In the Nifty, Bharti Airtel, Bharti Infratel, Tata Steel and Hindalco were the top earners. Only two stocks in the 30-share index ended in&nbsp;red.&nbsp;
