Domestic stock market indices were trading higher on Tuesday, tracking positive global trends, led by gains in banks and heavyweight Tech Mahindra post its Q1 earnings.&nbsp;

The S&amp;P BSE Sensex was trading around 38,125 levels, up 190 points and the Nifty50 index hovered around the 11,200-mark.

Individually, Tech Mahindra surged over 6 per cent in the intra-day trade after its June quarter profit before tax rose 32.9 per cent sequentially to Rs 1,283 crore.

The precious metal had stormed almost $40 higher at one point to reach $1,980 an ounce, only for a wave of selling to slap it back to $1,947 in wild trade.&nbsp;

The Indian rupee gained 4 paise to trade at 74.79 against the American dollar in early deals on Tuesday amid caution ahead of the two-day US Federal Reserve's meeting. 
At the interbank forex market, the rupee was trading in a narrow range.

It opened at 74.86 against the US dollar but soon recovered the lost ground and touched 74.79 against the US dollar, up 4 paise over its last close of 74.83.

Meanwhile, the rupee pared its initial gains and settled on a flat note at 74.83 (provisional) to the US dollar. At the interbank forex market, the domestic unit opened on a strong note at 74.70, but erased the gains to finally close at 74.83, unchanged from its previous closing.

The domestic stock markets extended their opening losses and were trading one per cent lower on Tuesday, dragged mainly by the HDFC twins, following weak global cues.

The 30-stock BSE Sensex was trading 300 points or 0.83 per cent down at 36,389, while the broader Nifty 50 index was ruling below 10,750, down 83 points or 0.77 per cent at 10,719. Among top Sensex losers were IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank and Maruti Suzuki.

In the previous session, the BSE barometer ended 99.36 points, or 0.27%, higher at 36,693.69, and the Nifty closed 34.65 points, or 1.15%, up at 10,802.70.

Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the capital market on Monday, purchasing equities worth ₹221.76 crores, provisional exchange data showed.

According to traders, besides stock-specific actions, negative cues from global markets amid escalating U.S.-China tension and rising COVID-19 cases dampened investor sentiment here.

Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul were trading with significant losses.

Stock exchanges on Wall Street also ended on a negative note.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude futures fell 2.06 per cent to $41.84 per barrel.

Indian stock market benchmarks BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 closed slightly lower today in a volatile session as downbeat growth outlook from the IMF and a surge in COVID-19 cases weighed on the sentiment.

The IMF on Wednesday projected a sharp contraction of 4.5 per cent for the Indian economy in 2020, a “historic low,” citing the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic that has nearly stalled all economic activities, but said the country is expected to bounce back in 2021 with a robust six per cent growth rate.

Domestic stock market indices advanced by 1.5 per cent on Friday led by gains by big firm which become net debt-free ahead of its March 2021 target.

The S&amp;P BSE Sensex today gained 524 points or 1.53 per cent to settle at 34,732. Of 30 stocks on the index, 18 ended in the green and rest 12 in the red. Besides RIL, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, and Bharti Airtel were the major contributors to the index's gains.&nbsp;

NSE's Nifty50 ended at 10,244, up 153 points or 1.5 per cent with 33 constituents advancing, 16 declining and 1 remaining unchanged. Volatility index, India VIX, dipped over 5 per cent to 29.78 levels.&nbsp;

Every week, Sensex gained nearly 3 per cent while Nifty added 2.7 per cent.

Meanwhile, Asian shares wobbled in choppy trade as lingering concerns about a fresh spike in coronavirus cases offset growing hopes for a quick economic recovery. Japan's Nikkei gained by 0.55 per cent and South Korean stocks rose by 0.37 per cent amid concern about diplomatic tension with North Korea. Shares in China rose by 0.96 per cent led by gains in financials and healthcare sector while Hong Kong`s Hang Seng edged up by 0.73 per cent.

In Europe, too, shares retreated. The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell 0.3 per cent after two straight days of gains, driven by optimism over global stimulus helping economies claw back from the coronavirus-led slide.

In commodities, oil prices ticked up after US oil product stocks shrank. Brent crude futures were up 37 cents at $41.08 a barrel at the time of writing of this report. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 25 cents to $38.21 a barrel.

Both benchmarks were down about 2 per cent earlier in the session.

Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund today announced it would wind up six yield-oriented, managed credit funds in India, effective April 23, citing severe market dislocation and illiquidity caused by the coronavirus.

"The decision has been taken to protect value for investors via a managed sale of the portfolio," the Fund said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the rupee depreciated by 40 paise to settle at 76.46 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday, tracking weak domestic equities and a strengthening greenback overseas.

Forex traders said market sentiment weakened after a potential antiviral drug for coronavirus reportedly failed its first trial.

The rupee opened lower at 76.30 at the interbank forex market and then fell further to 76.47 and finally closed at 76.46, down 40 paise over its last close.

The rupee had settled at 76.06 against the US dollar on Thursday. 
&nbsp;The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, advanced by 0.31 per cent to 100.74.
