After hitting a peak of 39,979.48, the 30-share index was trading 272.07 points or 0.69 per cent, higher at 39,887.97. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty spurted 76.25 points, or 0.64 per cent, to 11,946.90.

In the previous session on Friday, the Sensex settled 86.18 points or 0.22 per cent, higher at 39,615.90. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty rose 26.90 points, or 0.23 per cent, to 11,870.65.

According to experts, the expectations of a normal monsoon and strong revival in earnings growth in FY20/FY21 driven by a turnaround in corporate banks and healthy growth in construction/infra companies would provide support to markets at higher levels.

On the currency front, the rupee appreciated marginally to 69.43 against the US dollar.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, were trading 0.52 per cent higher at 63.62 per barrel.

Indian shares ended higher on Monday boosted by IT stocks, after paring some of the early gains on optimism from the US-Mexico migration deal last week that averted a potential tariff war.

The broader NSE Nifty ended up 0.44% at 11,922.70, while the benchmark BSE Sensex closed 0.43% higher at 39,784.52.

Shares of Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Ltd and Tech Mahindra Ltd ended between 1.9% and 2.5% higher, boosting the Nifty IT index, which closed 1.57% higher.

Britannia Industries Ltd ended as the top gainer among the bluechips, closing up 3.47% to 3,000 rupees, an over three-month high.

Oil and gas companies such as Indian Oil Corp Ltd, Gail (India) Ltd and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd were among the top losers, dragged by a rise in crude prices due to tighter supply.

Market mood has been euphoric since the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won the general elections.

According to Sunil Sharma, Chief Investment Officer, Sanctum Wealth Management, this past week's events reinforce a positive view on markets in the longer term.

"Given the large amount of groundwork already in place, we expect the next five years to surprise to the upside on earnings, once remaining PSU bank issues are resolved," he said.

Positive cues from global markets and sustained foreign fund inflow too boosted investor sentiment here, traders said.

Foreign institutional investors bought equity worth Rs 1,215.36 crore on Monday, while domestic institutional investors sold shares to the tune of Rs 327.86 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in China, Japan and Korea were trading on a positive note in their respective early sessions.

Benchmarks on Wall Street too ended in the green in Monday's session.

In a similar movement, the broader NSE Nifty plunged 119.15 points, or 1.01 per cent, to 11,709.10.

Tata Motors was the biggest loser in the Sensex pack, dipping 7.05 per cent, a day after the company posted a 49 per cent decline in March quarter profit.

Maruti, IndusInd Bank, M&amp;M, Bharti Airtel, SBI, PowerGrid, Hero MotoCorp, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, Infosys, Yes Bank and TCS too fell up to 3.25 per cent.

On the other hand, RIL, HUL and Bajaj Finance ended in the green, rising up to 1.08 per cent.

The broader BSE midcap and smallcap indices ended in the red in line with benchmarks, falling up to 0.84 per cent.

Traders believe that though a profit-booking emerged at higher levels but election rally may continue if the election results come as per exit polls prediction.

On Monday, the 30-share index skyrocketed 1,421.90 points, or 3.75 per cent, to 39,352.67, and the Nifty soared 421.10 points, or 3.69 per cent, to 11,828.25.

The rally came after a majority of exit polls forecast another term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The results of the seven-phase polls will be announced on May 23.

Meanwhile, the Indian rupee was trading marginally lower at 69.76 against the US dollar.

Brent crude, the global benchmark, was trading at 72.01 per barrel, higher by 0.04 per cent.

Sensex surged over 1000 points during the trade hours, and the rupee appreciated 79 paise against the US dollar. Domestic benchmark indices continued to extend their rally later in the day with the BSE Sensex climbing 1,300 points and Nifty touching 11,800 mark.

Oil prices jumped after Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said that there was a consensus among the members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to maintain production cuts to "gently" reduce inventories.

Both US crude and Brent crude jumped more than 1.1% on Monday, with West Texas Intermediate fetching $63.5 a barrel and Brent crude at $73.04 per barrel, Reuters reported.&nbsp;

The domestic stock market on Monday closed at a historic high after witnessing an eventful day of rallying after exit polls predicted an easy win for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Lok Sabha 2019 polls. BSE Sensex scaled 1,422 points to close at a record high of 39,353 while NSE Nifty surged 421 points to close at an all-time high of 11,828. Sensex surged over 1000 points during the trade hours, and the rupee appreciated 79 paise against the US dollar. Domestic benchmark indices continued to extend their rally later in the day with the BSE Sensex climbing 1,300 points and Nifty touching 11,800 mark. The 30-share index was trading 1,341 points close to the session end, higher at 39,271.77 points. In similar movement, Nifty soared 393.95 points, or 3.45 per cent, to 11,801.10. Most exit polls Sunday forecast another term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with some of them projecting that BJP-led NDA will get more than 300 seats to comfortably cross the majority mark of 272 in the Lok Sabha. Pollsters predicted the BJP to make a clean sweet in the Hindi heartland of the nation in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat and the national capital. The results of the seven-phase polls will come out Thursday. Meanwhile, European stocks slipped on Monday as concerns about an escalating fallout from a US crackdown on China's Huawei Technologies offset a slightly more positive tone on trade, news agency Reuters reported. Asian shares managed to reverse some of last week's heavy losses on Monday after the United States said it would lift tariffs in North America, as investors cheered apparent wins by incumbent parties in elections in Australia and India. Oil prices jumped after Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said that there was a consensus among the members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to maintain production cuts to "gently" reduce inventories. Both the key indices rallied in the last hour of trade after trading on a tepid note through most part of the day.

The 30-share <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/sensex-nifty-start-on-a-tepid-note-219066">BSE benchmark</a> closed 278.60 points or 0.75 per cent, higher at 37,393.48. It hit an intra-day high of 37,518.94 and a low of 37,052.30.

Similarly, the broader Nifty rose 100.10 points, or 0.90 per cent, to settle at 11,257.10. During the day, it hit a high of 11,281.55 and a low of 11,143.35. 
Bajaj Finance was the biggest gainer in the Sensex pack, spurting 3.64 per cent, after the company reported a jump of 50 per cent in standalone net profit at Rs 1,114 crore for the March quarter.

Tata Motors, Infosys, Vedanta, ONGC, PowerGrid, NPTC, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Bank, SBI, HDFC Bank, Tata Steel, TCS and RIL too rose up to 3.48 per cent.

On the other hand, Yes Bank was the top loser, cracking 4.07 per cent, followed by Bharti Airtel, IndusInd Bank, Coal India, ITC, M&amp;M, HDFC, Maruti and Asian Paints, shedding up to 1.87 per cent.

Indian bourses are facing headwinds both on the domestic and global front as weak macroeconomic scenario, concerns over the health of NBFC sector, US-China trade tensions and uncertainty over Lok Sabha poll outcome have been keeping investors jittery for past many sessions, according to market experts.

Meanwhile, the Indian rupee was trading five paise higher at 70.46 against the US dollar in opening deals Tuesday.

In Asia, all leading bourses witnessed mild to heavy sell-offs on Tuesday after US-China trade war further intensified.

In a retaliatory move, China on Monday said it would raise tariffs on US goods worth nearly USD 60 billion.

Brent Futures, global crude oil benchmark, traded higher at USD 70.30 per barrel, up 0.10 per cent, on concerns about supply disruptions in view of geopolitical tensions in the crucial oil-producing region of the Middle East.

In recent months, the country's financial system has been grappling with multiple woes in the wake of the turmoil at diversified IL&amp;FS group as well as default by some other large entities.

Elsewhere in Asia, bourses were trading significantly lower after the near collapse of trade talks with China last week.

Trump on Friday imposed a hefty duty on import of Chinese products from 10 per cent to 25 per cent worth more than USD 200 billion and asking for a similar increase on tariff on the rest of the Chinese import of over USD 300 billion.

Sustained foreign fund outflow too weighed on investor sentiment here, traders said.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equity worth Rs 1,245.14 crore on Friday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased shares to the tune of Rs 1,057.42 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

Meanwhile, on the currency front, the rupee depreciated 19 paise to 70.11 against the US dollar.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, were trading 0.30 per cent higher at USD 70.83 per barrel.

The m-cap of ICICI Bank dived Rs 10,974.8 crore to Rs 2,48,112.25 crore and of ITC tumbled Rs 7,232.6 crore to Rs 3,64,939.46 crore.

The valuation of Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd diminished by Rs 4,409.41 crore to Rs 2,66,292.11 crore and that of Infosys decreased by Rs 3,364.07 crore to stand at Rs 3,12,837.34 crore.

HUL's m-cap fell by Rs 1,233.88 crore to Rs 3,65,207.28 crore and of SBI declined Rs 981.71 crore to Rs 2,74,922.66 crore.

In contrast, TCS added Rs 1,144.48 crore to its valuation to reach Rs 8,01,340.52 crore.

In the order of top-10 firms, TCS was at the number one position, followed by RIL, HDFC Bank, Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), ITC, HDFC, Infosys, SBI, Kotak Mahindra Bank and ICICI Bank.

The rupee opened weak at 69.70 at the interbank forex market and then fell further to 69.89, down 18 paise over its last close on Wednesday.

The domestic currency had settled at 69.71 against the US dollar yesterday.

Experts attributed the drop to weak cues from global markets as US-China trade tiff continued to roil investor sentiment. On Wednesday, Sensex plunged 487.50 points to end at 37,789.13. Nifty sank 138.45 points to settle at 11,359.45. Meanwhile, the rupee depreciated by 18 paise to 69.89 against the US dollar in early trade today amid heavy sell-off in domestic equity market and foreign fund outflows. The rupee opened weak at 69.70 at the interbank forex market and then fell further to 69.89, down 18 paise over its last close on Wednesday. Markets end in red; Sensex loses over 200 points, Nifty settles at 11,300

The benchmark BSE Sensex rose over 100 points Friday led by gains in banking and auto stocks amid sustained foreign fund inflow and easing crude prices.

The 30-share index was trading 107.81 points, or 0.28 per cent, higher at 39,089.24. Similarly, the NSE Nifty up 22.45 points, or 0.91 per cent, at 11,747.20.

In the previous session, the BSE bourse settled 50.12 points, or 0.13 per cent, lower at 38,981.43; and the broader Nifty slipped 23.40 points, or 0.20 per cent, to close at 11,724.75.

Top gainers in the early session were Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, Maruti, PowerGrid, ICICI Bank, ONGC, HDFC, Coal India, Asian Paints, M&amp;M, SBI, NTPC, Kotak Bank and RIL, rising up to 2.46 per cent.

On the other hand, HCL Tech, TCS, Infosys, HUL, Tata Steel, Vedanta, IndusInd Bank and Yes Bank were the top losers, shedding up to 2.45 per cent. 
According to traders, recovery in auto and banking stocks led to the rise in key indices. Unabated foreign fund inflow and easing crude oil prices too lifted investor mood.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, were trading 0.40 per cent lower at $70.47 per barrel.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought equity worth Rs 597.54 crore on Thursday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares to the tune of Rs 791.69 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

On the currency front, the rupee was trading up at 69.28 against the US dollar in early trade.

On Wall Street, the S&amp;P 500 index and the Nasdaq ended in the red on Thursday.

Elsewhere in Asia, Korea's Kospi and Hong Kong's Hang Seng were trading in the red in early deals, while other major bourses in China and Japan were shut for holidays.&nbsp;

Sensex rises over 100 points in early trade

Domestic stock markets on Tuesday ended in red with BSE Sensex falling by 36 points at 39,032 while the NSE Nifty dropped by 6 points to close at 11,748.

In early trade today, Sensex plunged over 150 points to slip below the 39,000-mark amid capital outflows by foreign funds and mixed global cues.

However, a strengthening rupee and global crude oil prices restricted further losses in equity markets, brokers said.

The 30-share index dropped 154.60 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 38,912.73 in early morning trade, after touching a high of 39,068.67.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty declined by 19.75 points, or 0.44 per cent, to 11,703.30.

On Friday, the Sensex closed 336.47 points higher at 39,067.33. The NSE Nifty too ended 112.85 points up at 11,754.65.

Domestic equity markets were closed Monday due to elections in Mumbai.
