A 'Home Pong' prototype made by video game pioneer Atari Inc. has sold for $270,910 at an auction in Boston. It was called ‘The Steve Jobs Revolution: Engelbart, Atari, and Apple’ auction.

According to Bobby Livingston, executive vice president at seller RR Auction, ''One of my favorite lots in the auction is this quarter that was used in the first video game while it was in a bar room in Menlo Park, California. It was made by Atari. It was the pong game.''&nbsp;

''And it had gotten so much money into this machine, it broke. And this is one of the first quarters taken out of that machine and given to Atari employee number three Al Alcorn, who's the consignor?''

''And you can see the pong mechanisms here, but they didn't have a case for it quite yet. And so, he's built a wooden case to hold the electronics in the board,'' he added.

In a letter of provenance written and signed by Alcorn himself, he explains why the "Home Pong" prototype was created.

"In 1975, Atari had managed to become dominant in the coin-operated entertainment business and moved on to build video games for the home market," he said.&nbsp;

"We had to get Pong running on a single chip of silicon so a product could be built at a price a consumer could afford."&nbsp;

Alcorn, who is the former mentor to Apple founder Steve Jobs, said the one-off system features paddle control knobs, a bright red "start game" button, a metal grille for its built-in speaker.

Founded in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney, Atari is famous for its "Pong" table tennis game, widely regarded as the first video game to achieve serious commercial success.&nbsp;

The brand with its portfolio of more than 200 games and franchises was saved from bankruptcy in 2013 by French company Ker Ventures owned by Frederic Chesnais and American fund Alden.

The auction includes many items relating to Jobs, including high school photos and a job application which will also be an NFT.

“Steve did not sign very many things. He didn't like to sign objects. So, his signature is very rare. It's actually one of the rarest signatures the collectors are interested in. So, any time something comes up with Steve's signature on it, it goes for a lot of money,” explained editor at large for Wired, Steven Levy.

The auction house said the items help tell the story of computer history.

“What makes these computers and video games so special is they're prototypes and they're very early models that are difficult to find. And we've had - these items are being consigned to us by people from the Silicon Valley that were there when this whole computer revolution started. So, these are very desirable. These particular computer items are museum quality items,” said Livingston.

John Moran Auctioneers in Monrovia, California, auctioned it off on Tuesday&nbsp;one of 200 Apple-1 computers that was made 45 years ago.

The so-called "Chaffey College" Apple-1 is one of only 200 made by Jobs and Wozniak at the very start of the company's odyssey from garage start-up to megalith worth $2 trillion.

The auctioned computer is called "Chaffey College" is because its original owner was a professor at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, California. He later sold the computer to a student in 1977 so that he could buy an Apple-II computer.&nbsp;

The student, who remains unidentified, has kept the computer until now.

The functioning Apple-1 is the great-great-grandfather of today's sleek chrome-and-glass Macbooks. It is expected that the computer will fetch USD 600,000 at the auction in California.

The piece to be auctioned is rarer still than most other Apple-1 computers. This one is encased in koa wood, a richly patinated wood native to Hawaii. Only a handful of the original 200 were made in this way.

Jobs and Wozniak mostly sold Apple-1s as component parts. One computer shop that took a delivery of around 50 units decided to encase some of them in wood, the auction house said.

"This is kind of the holy grail for vintage electronics and computer tech collectors," Apple-1 expert Corey Cohen told the Los Angeles Times. "That really makes it exciting for a lot of people."

Auction house John Moran Auctioneers says the device, which comes with a 1986 Panasonic video monitor, has only ever had two owners.

"It was originally purchased by an electronics professor at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, California, who then sold it to his student in 1977," a listing on the auction house's website says.

The Los Angeles Times reported the student -- who has not been named -- paid just $650 for it at the time. 
That student now stands to make a pretty penny: a working Apple-1 that came to the market in 2014 was sold by Bonhams for more than $900,000.

"A lot of people just want to know what kind of a person collects Apple-1 computers and it's not just people in the tech industry," Cohen said.

News flash, you won't have to wait for the new goodies for long. In a first, the phones will be available for pre-order in India on September 17th with sales starting on September 24. This shows what a significant market India is for Apple as the iPhone-maker aims to take advantage of its growth momentum in the country.&nbsp;The new iPhones will arrive in India at the same time as Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, the UK, the US&nbsp;and other big markets.

In another noteworthy aspect, the pricing of the iPhones in India remains the same as last year. Apple offers you improved camera features, longer-lasting battery and of course, a faster processor, the mighty A15 Bionic chipset. For most, the USP remains the jaw-dropping storage option of 1TB for the Pro models.

"India is the second-largest smartphone market in the world and continues to be an important market for Apple. Apple has only a 2 per cent&nbsp;market share in the world’s second-largest market as compared to the 14 per cent&nbsp;it has in the world’s largest market-China," says Tarun Pathak, Research Director, Counterpoint Research.&nbsp;

Pathak adds that Apple would like to keep a closer eye on India through recent actions like "increased local assembly, channel expansion, early launches, aggressive marketing.”

Commenting on Apple's decision to maintain its India pricing from last year, Pathak calls it "a good move", attributing the decision to strong competition for iPhones in the ultra-premium segment. Pathak also expects iPhone sales to go up in the upcoming festive season in India.

The animosity between Apple and Facebook goes way back. These companies don't really compete with each other they are two mammoth technology companies and that's where their similarities end.

The departure of charismatic founders from big tech companies typically causes hand-wringing and wobbling share prices, but not at Alibaba.

The company's operational reins have for a couple of years now been in the hands of a respected team of executives who have kept it on e-commerce's cutting-edge.

Ma was Alibaba's driving force and a frequently irreverent ambassador for the company, known for stunts like a Michael Jackson-inspired dance at an Alibaba anniversary celebration two years ago and starring in his own kung fu short film.

'Gold standard'

He is expected to retain some advisory functions.

But the transition to figures like CEO Daniel Zhang, and co-founder and executive vice-chairman Joseph Tsai -- announced exactly a year ago -- may prove to be the "gold standard" for tech-company succession, said Jeffrey Towson, an equity investor and professor at Peking University.

"He's succeeded at what Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and (Yahoo co-founder) Jerry Yang failed at, which is making themselves redundant," said Towson, who has authored books on China's leading companies.

"He built a really robust culture at Alibaba and they are still just innovating like crazy."

Ma was a cash-strapped Chinese entrepreneur when he convinced friends to give him $60,000 to start Alibaba in the eastern city of Hangzhou in 1999.

With monthly active users of more than 750 million today, Alibaba helped to unlock China's massive consumer power, coincidentally a key objective of the government today as it seeks to fuel domestic demand to lessen the reliance on fickle foreign trade.

Its Taobao and Tmall platforms have helped countless businesses grow.

"(Ma) has been the driving force for the development of China's internet industry and economy. He is (China’s) entrepreneurial godfather," said furniture maker Cheng Huaibao.

Cheng, 30, is one of the millions of small businessmen, often located in so-called "Taobao villages" -- communities whose economies are oriented towards Alibaba's vast market -- who leapt into commerce thanks to the company.

Cheng started making bunk beds in 2010 in eastern Jiangsu province with 10 staff. Today his thriving operation has 100 employees.

"Without Teacher Ma, I wouldn't have come out and started my own business," Cheng said, using a common Chinese term of respect.&nbsp;

There have been criticisms.&nbsp;

Alibaba and its imitators are accused of fostering rampant commercialism and materialism and the selling of counterfeit goods.&nbsp;

Chinese e-commerce today also produces mountains of packaging material, contributing to a rising national garbage problem.

Jony Ive, a close creative collaborator with Apple Inc co-founder Steve Jobs whose iPhone and other designs fueled Apple's rise to a $1 trillion company, will leave later this year to form an independent design company.

Apple said Ive will continue work on its products at his new venture, but shares fell as much as 1.5% to $197.44 in after-market trading, wiping about $9 billion from the firm's value.

Ive spent nearly three decades at Apple, leading the design of the candy-coloured iMacs that helped Apple re-emerge from near death in the 1990s to the iPhone, regarded by some experts as one of the most successful consumer products of all time.

Ive's new company will be called LoveFrom, the Financial Times reported, quoting Ive as saying it would be based in California "for now." Ive told the newspaper he would work on Apple devices in addition to unspecified "personal passions" and non-Apple projects.

Ive's departure comes amid falling iPhone sales, including a record drop in Apple's most recent quarter. "I would view it as Jony Ive looking to get paid market rates for his design expertise from Apple, with the right to allow other companies - not competitors to Apple - to leverage that expertise," Chokshi said.

Continuity after jobs

Jobs deeply involved himself in Apple's design process, sometimes visiting Apple's design studios daily to offer Ive feedback. Chief Executive Tim Cook, to whom Ive now reports, has not done the same.

After Jobs' death, pundits questioned whether Apple could continue Jobs' pace of new products. Ive became a symbol of continuity, bridging the Jobs and Cook eras.

But Alan Cannistraro, chief executive of online video discovery platform Rheo who previously worked at Apple for a dozen years, said Apple employees knew Ive had taken on fewer day-to-day design duties in the past several years. Around 2015, Cannistraro would often see Ive at a high-end fitness gym on Market Street in San Francisco doing mid-morning workouts.

"When I would see him there, two days a week or more, that just told me he had taken a step back," Cannistraro said.

Meantime, Williams, who oversaw development of the Apple Watch, "will spend more of his time working with the design team in their studio," Apple said.

Williams has gained clout in Apple's product development process, but that does not necessarily mean he is poised to become chief executive in the near future, Maxim Group's Chokshi said.

Arguing in the court, the state government in its submission said, "Steve Jobs was diagnosed with the same pancreatic cancer. In fact, much of his accomplishments came after his diagnosis."

"Just the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is not enough to ask the chief minister to resign from office," it added. &nbsp; &nbsp;

The state also informed the high court that the chief minister has been regularly holding meetings with his cabinet colleagues and senior officials and monitoring the administration.

The beauty of the phones is impressive but again, when you start using them you realise that, compared to the 7S and the 7S Plus, they don&#39;t offer much more than incremental upgrades.&nbsp;

The iPhone 8 and the 8 Plus went on sale in India at 6 pm on Friday. The buzz in the market and on social media has been described as "moderate". But never mind all of that... The only pertinent question now is, should one buy them? The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus went on sale in India at 6 pm on Friday. Excited? No, not at all. There has been no innovation on the phones, if you compare them to the 7S and the 7S Plus. In a way, Apple never came across as innovating ever since Tim Cook took over the company. The phones look and feel good -- the glass back of the 8 and the 8 Plus for example but when you start using them, you realise that they're not all that impressive. Considering the perks of your job, you've had the opportunity to check out the phones. What did you think? The beauty of the phones is impressive but again, when you start using them you realise that, compared to the 7S and the 7S Plus, they don't offer much more than incremental upgrades. So the all-important question. Should one buy them? If you're using an iPhone older than the 7, then yes. But not otherwise. If you're really looking for the whole iPhone experience, I would suggest you wait for the iPhone X. (Did you know Apple has got rid of the home button on that phone?) The X is going to be here on November 3. The 8 and 8 Plus are kind of expensive too... Yes. Rs 64,000 for the base version of the 8, and Rs 73,000 for the 8 Plus. What phone would you recommend to someone who might want the same sort of experience but does not want to buy the 8 or the 8 Plus? The OnePlus 5 at Rs 33,000 is a very good buy.
