Recently, Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne opened up on his struggles to get fuel for his vehicle. He revealed he had to wait in a queue outside a fuel station for a couple of days in order to get his vehicle refilled. The all-rounder was part of the recently-concluded series between Australia in Sri Lanka in the island nation.

Karunaratne said he has to travel to several different places in the next few days for training and to play matches as the domestic season is on but there is a fuel crisis in the country at present. "We've to go for practices in Colombo &amp; to different other places as club cricket season is on but I've been standing in queue for fuel for past 2 days. I got it filled for Rs 10,000 which will last 2-3 days..," the Sri Lankan cricketer told Indian news agency ANI.

He also went on to thank India for its support to Sri Lanka in time of crisis and said India has been like a brother to his country. "India is like a brother country &amp; they are helping us a lot. I thank them so much. We have problems. They are supporting us when we are struggling. Thank you so much for that. Thank you for everything. We will get better and better," Karunaratne added.

However, despite the tough situation in the country, Sri Lanka recently successfully hosted Australia for a full-fledged tour consisting of 3 T20Is, 5 ODIs and two Test matches. After a state of emergency was declared in Sri Lanka on Wednesday, the Sri Lankan Army on Thursday (July 14) issued a diktat, granting its soldiers permission to wield force in any capacity whatsoever to prevent civilians from destroying public property and life.

Reportedly, the Army, taking desperate measures to ward off the protestors has already deployed tanks near the Parliament after protestors snatched two T-56 weapons and caused injuries to several Army personnel. Two unconscious soldiers, who were injured in the melee, were later admitted to Colombo National hospital and Colombo Army Hospital.

Explaining its decision to deploy the tanks, the Sri Lankan Army stated, “It has been unfortunately observed that a certain section of the protesters, purposefully deviating from its proclaimed 'non-violent' approach continued to breach law and order as of Wednesday (13) afternoon and resorted to violence by trying to place the Parliament complex as well as the Speaker's official residence under siege while destroying Police barricades through heavy machinery brought in there,”

Earlier, the Army had refused to obey acting president Ranil Wickremesinghe's order to use force on the protestors to quell the protests.

The island nation of Sri Lanka is going through its worst economic crisis since it gained independence in 1948. After the President, Prime Minister and other high-ranking officials deserted office, the entire country plunged deeper into a state of crisis.

The anti-Government protestors in Sri Lanka have been demanding the entire Rajapaksa clan and its extended members resign and allow an all-party government to run the country.

Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the acting president of Sri Lanka before Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, the prime minister’s office said in a statement.

The 73-year-old leader act as the acting president until a new president is elected by the parliament. Sri Lanka's Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena&nbsp;has said that the new president will be elected in the next seven days after parliament convenes on July 20. The last date for filing the nominations is July 19.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa had appointed Wickremesinghe as the acting president hours after he fled to the Maldives earlier this week.

Earlier today, the&nbsp;resignation of Gotbaya was accepted, prompting relief and rejoice among the protesters who had camped outside his former offices.

According to AFP news agency, he emailed his notice from Singapore after flying from the Maldives.&nbsp;"The president has officially resigned from his position," speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana told reporters.&nbsp;

Gotabaya's much-sought exit came after months of intense protests against his mismanagement of the island nation's economy, low foreing reserves, and acute shortage of essential commodities, leading to severe hardships for its 22 million people.&nbsp;

He, his wife Ioma and their two bodyguards arrived in Singapore from the Maldives on board a Saudia airline flight, according to reports.

Media reports states that Gotabaya has not sought asylum in Singapore and is staying in the city-state for a "private visit".

"He has not asked for asylum and neither has he been granted any asylum,"&nbsp;Singapore's foreign ministry was quoted as saying.&nbsp;

AFP quoting Sri Lankan security forces said that Gotabaya would most likely stay in Singapore for a few days, before potentially moving to the United Arab Emirates.

A day after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives to avoid popular revolt against an economic crisis blamed on his government’s poor management, Sri Lankans await his resignation. Rajapaksa has frequently assured the Speaker of the House of his resignation on Wednesday, but as of early Thursday, his resignation letter had still not arrived, according to an aide to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. The president was anticipated to travel to Singapore next, however, it’s unclear about his final destination. The leader along with his wife and two bodyguards departed from the primary international airport in a military plane, Reuters reported.&nbsp;

The situation in Sri Lanka got worse as more protests began after Rajapaksa’s decision to name his ally Ranil Wickremesinghe, as interim president. The protesters stormed the premier’s office and demanded his resignation as well. The current acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe has declared a state of emergency and enforced it in the western province but was lifted early on Thursday (July 15). However, he also announced his desire to step down from his position amid the ongoing turmoil in the country.&nbsp;

As per Hospital sources, nearly 45 people were taken to hospital during a standoff on Wednesday (July 13) night near the parliament building between the police and protesters who were demanding the resignation of both Rajapaksa and Wickremesinghe.&nbsp;A 26-year-old protester was hospitalized after being tear-gassed and died because of breathing problems.&nbsp;

Hundreds and thousands of people occupied the government building in Colombo last weekend as a part of the protest over the worst economic crisis since its independence in 1948. The protesters are blaming the Rajapaksas and their allies for rampant inflation, shortages, and corruption.&nbsp;

It is being reported that Rajapaksa e-mailed his resignation to speaker of the Sri Lankan parliament.

Interestingly, Maldives President Mohammed Nasheed tweeted about Rajapaksa's resignation. He referred to Rajapaksa as 'GR' in his tweet.

"President GR has resigned. I hope Sri Lanka can now move forward. I believe the President would not have resigned if he were still in Sri Lanka, and fearful of losing his life. I commend the thoughtful actions of the Govt of Maldives. My best wishes to the people of Sri Lanka," tweeted Nasheed.

The resignation was being forwarded to the country's attorney general to consider legal implications before being formally accepted, said AFP quoting sources.

 
Sri Lanka is currently witnessing unprecedented chaos due a major economic crisis that has seen acute shortage of food, medicine and fuel among others. There have been massive protests across the country and huge mobs of angry Sri Lankans have ransacked official residences of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and now former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

As president, Rajapaksa enjoyed immunity from arrest. He had agreed to step down in the wake of massive protests. He fled the country on Wednesday and went to Maldives. From there he flew to Singapore on Thursday.

Singapore's foreign ministry confirmed Rajapaksa had been allowed to enter the city-state for a "private visit", adding: "He has not asked for asylum and neither has he been granted any asylum."
