The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday said that Sri Lanka's tax reforms are necessary for the cash-strapped country to regain the confidence of creditors. The Lankan government announced a ban on strikes in several key sectors, just one day before a planned nationwide stoppage called by unions, which was aimed at protesting against hikes in taxes and utility bills.&nbsp;

However, Sri Lankan workers defied the ban as they went on a strike in order to protest against the government and its proposed rescue plan for the bankrupt nation. Workers forced the closure of some hospitals, banks, etc.&nbsp;

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has hiked corporate tax&nbsp;to 30 per cent from 24 per cent in January, after raising VAT (Value Added Tax) to 15 per cent last year. Wickremesinghe, who is also the country's finance minister, introduced tax hikes with effect from January widely believed to be on demand by the IMF.&nbsp;

The IMF said in a statement: "Sri Lanka is among the countries to collect the least amount of fiscal revenue in the world, with tax revenue to GDP ratio at only 7.3 per cent in 2021. External creditors are not willing to provide financing to fill this gap".&nbsp;

The IMF noted that it is aware of the difficulties faced by the common people in the nation at this crucial juncture. The global lender said: "Increases in the cost of living, loss of employment and livelihood, and falling real incomes have hit large parts of the population, and particularly the poor and vulnerable who have no buffers to withstand these hardships."&nbsp;

In April 2020, Sri Lanka sought assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after it defaulted on its $46 billion foreign debt. Colombo is waiting for financial assurances from Beijing, its largest bilateral creditor.

Sri Lanka's unprecedented economic crisis since late 2021 has caused severe shortages of food, fuel and medicines and led to months of protests that toppled president Gotabaya Rajapaksa in July.

Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected by parliament to replace Rajapaksa. The current president recently said that Sri Lanka's economy contracted by 11 per cent last year and the island will remain bankrupt until at least 2026.

Wijesekra said that the latest price hike is aimed at helping the power ministry offset dip in revenue caused by cessation of government subsidies in January. He added that the price hike will also help the ministry manage long-termfuel contracts.

The IMF agreed to loan Sri Lanka $2.9 billion in September to overcome its worst financial crisis in seven decades, but the deal comes with conditions that include raising taxes, removing subsidies and cutting public sector debt. The government of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who took over after mass protests against economic mismanagement ousted his predecessor last year, desperately needs the funds and has been courting multilateral agencies for support since taking office in July.

Tamil nationalist leader Pazha Nedumaran on Monday claimed that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief Velupillai Prabhakaran is alive and will appear in public 'at the right time'. The claim has invited ridicule and has been vehemently slammed by the Sri Lankan media.

Prabhakaran, as per reports, died more than a decade ago. He was killed by the Sri Lankan Army during the last phase of the civil war. His body was even identified by Karuna Amman, LTTE's former leader. A picture of his body was also released back then.&nbsp;

Nedumaran, however, claims that not only is the LTTE chief alive but will also appear in public. He claimed that the former LTTE chief's family was also in touch with him and that he was sharing the news about Prabhakaran's survival with their permission.

As per Deccan Herald, in a press conference on Monday, Nedumaran called his declaration a "true announcement". He said that the current conditions are ideal for Prabhakaran to emerge. According to him, the international political atmosphere and the Sinhalese people's opposition to the Rajapaksa clan have contributed to this.

Sri Lanka Army dismisses claim of Tamil politician that LTTE ex-chief Velupillai Prabhakaran is still alive

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe praised India's support for his country amid the economic crisis at the opening of the Jaffna Cultural Centre (JCC).

"We appreciate the support extended by the Indian government to Sri Lanka to overcome the debt trap during the economic crisis," he said on Saturday.

The president highlighted the ongoing discussions between the two nations on economic development projects in the Northern Province, development projects in the Trincomalee Port, and the energy sector.

The Jaffna Cultural Centre, built with funding from the Indian government, was officially opened Saturday.

The event was attended by the Sri Lanka president along with India’s Minister of State for Information &amp; Broadcasting, Dr L Murugan—who is on a four-day visit to Sri Lanka from February 9-12—High Commissioner of India Gopal Bagalay, and other dignitaries.

President Wickremesinghe also pointed out the cultural similarities between the two countries.

"The Jaffna Cultural Centre is a common centre, and I always maintain that the cultures of our two countries cannot be separated. Sri Lanka and India are two sides of the same coin and our shared culture should be conserved and protected. This is why the JCC is such a significant gift," he said.

The Jaffna Cultural Centre features a museum, a 600-seat theatre-style auditorium, a 11-story learning tower, an exhibition gallery, a 100-seat conference facility, and more.

The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Modi in 2015, and it was virtually inaugurated by External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar in 2022.

The Indian minister, on his part, spoke about India's "Neighbourhood First" policy, which guides their partnership with Sri Lanka.

He announced a special financial assistance program for 100 students from low-income families at the University of Jaffna. He highlighted India's numerous people-centric projects in the Northern Province.

The Jaffna Cultural Centre is seen as India's commitment to the people of Sri Lanka, including the Northern Province.

India's development partnership with Sri Lanka is worth $5 billion and covers various aspects of daily life, including infrastructure, education, health, housing, and livelihood development.

&nbsp;The police in Sri Lanka confirmed that ousted president Gotabaya Rajapaksa is being investigated over the hidden cash which was discovered by the protesters after they had stormed into his former residence last year.

Rajapaksa's reign saw Sri Lanka suffer an unprecedented economic crisis in which more than 22 million people in the country faced shortages of pharmaceuticals, fuel and food.

Last July, Rajapaksa fled the country after his compound and residence were besieged by an angry mob, after which he gave his resignation from abroad days late. After some time, he returned to the country and since then, has been living under armed guard.

The presidential palace was occupied by the protesters for several days, during which they found hidden cash worth Rs17.5 million ($48,000) in the private quarters of Rajapaksa which they later returned to the police.

On Monday, the police investigators "recorded a three-hour long statement from the former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa on the cash found in the president's house", said police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa.

The police were directed by the court in Colombo to record the statement of Rajapaksa on the cash stockpile last November.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka has reached the final stage of IMF discussions to secure a preliminary $2.9 billion bailout. This process has been delayed by protracted debt restructuring negotiations with China and other major creditors. Wickremesinghe&nbsp;said that the country is in direct discussions with China regarding its outstanding debt and has received a positive response from all the parties and is working towards a final agreement.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka's President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Wednesday said that the bankruptcy will last for three more years, as he works his way to repair the country’s finances. The president took office last year after the former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa was forced to resign and flee the country amid widespread protests. In a parliament address, the president said, "If we continue according to this plan, we can rise out of bankruptcy by 2026." His initiatives include tax hikes and negotiations with international creditors after a default on the country's foreign debt to clear its way for the IMF bailout, AFP reported. The tax hikes and removal of fuel subsidies have been unpopular in the already crisis-hit country. Remember, I'm not here to be popular. I want to rebuild this nation from the crisis it has fallen into." The South Asian island country has been in an economic crisis for over a year, which led to financial loans, violence and ouster of its former president over his mismanagement. Sri Lanka has reached the final stage of IMF discussions to secure a preliminary $2.9 billion bailout. This process has been delayed by protracted debt restructuring negotiations with China and other major creditors. Wickremesinghe said that the country is in direct discussions with China regarding its outstanding debt and has received a positive response from all the parties and is working towards a final agreement.
