A nerve-wracking video captured by a passenger showed the moment flames shot out of an engine of a Southwest Airlines jet.

The video was captured&nbsp;aboard a Texas-Mexico flight. In the clip shared on social media, flames start bursting out of the jet in the sky near Houston, forcing the plane to make&nbsp;a hasty but safe landing.

Flight 307 was climbing out of William P. Hobby Airport in Houston en route to Cancun on Tuesday evening (Aug 16) when the right engine erupted in flames, KHOU reported.

The jet experienced a mechanical issue shortly after takeoff, the Dallas-based carrier said in an official statement.

"The aircraft landed safely and was taken out of service for review," the airline said. "A different aircraft continued the flight to Cancun last evening, and we appreciate our customers’ patience and support."

The footage was captured by passenger Ricardo Garcia.&nbsp;

A mechanical engineer named Andrew Sandino, 38 witnessed this moment from the ground. He was leaving for work near Hobby when he looked up and saw flames coming out of the aircraft.&nbsp;

"I noticed big black plumes of smoke coming out the right engine and then it started shooting really big fireballs out and the plane was shifting back and forth, side to side, pretty heavily," Sandino told NBC News on Thursday.

Flight 307 was only in the air for 16 minutes before passengers were back on the ground and moved to a new plane.

Southwest is one of the few major US-based carriers to have never had a fatal crash.&nbsp;

Back in 2018, a New Mexico woman was killed when an engine exploded on a Southwest flight after taking off from New York. The blast sent shrapnel through one of the jet’s windows and the victim was partially sucked out of the plane.

The airline had requested the order after experiencing delays across the United States due to “equipment issues.” Its flights were not taking off as scheduled due to an "intermittent technology issue," the airline tweeted Tuesday.&nbsp;

Flights into Dallas Love Field Airport are still on hold, the FAA said. Other residual flight delays can be expected since a pause was issued earlier.

Southwest Airlines experienced a technological snag Tuesday morning and expressed hope that operations will resume as soon as possible. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we’re hoping to get everyone going ASAP,” the airline wrote in another social media post. CNN reported that “Southwest Airlines requested the FAA pause the airline’s departures".

Flight tracking website FlightAware reported that nearly 800 flights belonging to the airline were delayed Tuesday. In a Twitter post, Southwest attributed the problem to “intermittent technology issues”.&nbsp;

Passengers are also taking to social media to complain about the ongoing issue.&nbsp;

Just a few months back,&nbsp;the airline had to cancel more than 16,700 flights between December 20 and 29 due to&nbsp;a meltdown in part&nbsp;to changes to its staff scheduling computer systems. To prevent a repeat, Southwest had last month&nbsp;unveiled an “action plan”.
