North Korea has escalated its provocative actions against South Korea. The nation, as per local media reports on Wednesday (May 29), sent balloons filled with trash, toilet paper, and suspected human and animal faeces into South Korea.

Seoul's military has slammed the "low class" move, which follows a warning from Pyongyang that it would shower South Korean border areas with "mounds of wastepaper and filth" as punishment.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff has confirmed the presence of "unidentified objects believed to be North Korean propaganda leaflets" in the Gyeonggi-Gangwon border area and stated that the military was taking necessary action.

They urged citizens to avoid outdoor activities, avoid contact with unknown objects, and report any findings to military bases or the police.

Condemning the North's actions as a violation of international laws and a serious threat to public safety, the South Korean military said that some balloons contained suspected trash.

"We sternly warn the North to immediately stop its inhumane and low-class actions," the statement added.

Gyeonggi province sent a text message alert to residents on Tuesday night, advising them to "refrain from outdoor activities and report (objects from North Korea) to military bases when identified."

Which South Korean action invited this retaliation?

This escalation follows frequent instances of South Korean activists launching balloons carrying anti-regime propaganda leaflets and money across the border into North Korea. These campaigns have long infuriated Pyongyang, which possibly fears that outside information could destabilise the tightly controlled society and threaten the Kim Jong Un regime.

In retaliation, North Korea recently threatened to take similar action. Kim Kang Il, a vice-minister of defence, on Sunday (May 26) said that "Tit-for-tat action will be taken against frequent scattering of leaflets and other rubbish by the ROK near border areas." Here, ROK refers to the Republic of Korea, the South's official name.

"Mounds of wastepaper and filth will soon be scattered over the border areas and the interior of the ROK and it will directly experience how much effort is required to remove them," Kim reiterated in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

"North Korea would scatter waste over South Korea's border areas in response to the propaganda leaflets."

"This is a stern message to South Korea that North Korea can retaliate with similar propaganda tactics and that the South should cease its activities immediately," Cheong Seong-chang of the Sejong Institute told AFP.

Even though the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, the two Koreas remain technically at war, separated by a heavily fortified border.

North Korea launched an "unidentified projectile", said South Korea's army on Monday (May 27).

The move came hours after Pyongyang informed Japan of its plan to fire another "spy satellite".

"North Korea has fired an unidentified projectile southwards," over the Yellow Sea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, after Seoul, Beijing and Tokyo wrapped up their first trilateral summit since 2019.

Following this, Japan also issued an evacuation order to southern Okinawa prefecture, confirming the launch.

"Missile launch. Missile launch. It appears a missile(s) was launched from North Korea. Please evacuate inside buildings or underground. Information was received at 22:46 (1346 GMT). Target region: Okinawa."

The Japanese government's alert was lifted at 23:03 (1403 GMT), adding that the missile(s) appeared not to fly to Japan".

Satellite launch failed

Hours later, Pyongyang said that its fresh attempt to place a spy satellite into orbit on Monday had failed after it burst into flames mid-air.

Further elucidating the issue behind the failed attempt, North Korea said that due to a suspected engine problem, the satellite exploded during the first-stage flight.

The launch of the Malligyong-1-1 reconnaissance satellite "exploded in the air during the first flight and failed to launch," the country's National Aerospace Technology Administration said in a statement carried by state media, adding the "cause of the accident was the reliability of the newly developed liquid oxygen and kerosene engine."

Pyongyang's statement came after the South Korean military said that it had detected several "fragments" in the ocean after Pyongyang's spy satellite launch which it said indicated that the launch may have failed.

The army said that South Korean and US intelligence agencies were investigating whether the launch had failed.

Around two minutes after it detected "what's suspected to be the North's military reconnaissance satellite... many fragments of the projectile were detected around 22:46 (1346 GMT) in North Korea waters and the US and South Korea are analysing whether it had an operational flight," Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

A senior Japanese defence ministry official told reporters that "the missile did not fly into the area that had been announced, and the situation is not as North Korea had intended. We are still analysing whether it is a satellite or not," Japan's Kyodo news agency reported.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang hailed what he called a "restart" in relations with Japan and South Korea as he met with their leaders on Monday for the first three-way discussions in four years, intending to revive trade and security exchanges stalled by global tension.

According to Seoul officials, Li, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will issue a joint statement on six issues, including the economy and trade, science and technology, people-to-people exchanges, health, and the aging population. Japanese media stated that they may also agree to restart talks on a three-party free trade agreement (FTA) that has been deadlocked since 2019.

Li urged for a thorough resumption of trilateral cooperation with an open and transparent attitude at the summit, according to China's official Xinhua news agency. He remarked on the three countries' consistent relations in the face of considerable global change. "Our meeting today, the first in more than four years, is both a restart and a new beginning," Li said, according to a post on X by China's foreign ministry.

China, along with US allies South Korea and Japan, is attempting to manage developing hostility amid rivalries between Beijing and Washington, as well as tensions over Taiwan, which China claims as its territory.

Yoon and Kishida have recently deepened connections with each other and with Washington, embarking on unprecedented three-way cooperation with the US on military and other issues. The summit comes after the leaders conducted bilateral talks on Sunday.

During the bilateral discussions, Li and Yoon agreed to continue diplomatic and security dialogue, as well as free trade talks, while Kishida and Li discussed Taiwan and decided to hold a fresh round of bilateral high-level economic dialogue. Yoon also asked China to play a constructive role in confronting North Korea's growing nuclear and missile capabilities, despite UN Security Council resolutions. The Japan Coast Guard announced on Monday that North Korea intends to launch a rocket carrying a space satellite between May 27 and June 4.

In response to the notice, officials from the United States, Japan, and South Korea called each other and urged that North Korea postpone the launch, which they claimed would deploy ballistic missile technology in violation of UN resolutions, according to Japan's Foreign Ministry. China, South Korea, and Japan's economic partnerships have grown more competitive during the last decade.

These connections have been stretched further by the United States' desire for its allies to transfer supply chains for crucial products, such as semiconductors, away from China. Officials and diplomats from South Korea and Japan have set a low standard for the summit, expressing concern about major announcements but underlining that simply gathering will help renew and rejuvenate their frayed ties. The three leaders are also set to attend a meeting with leading business executives.

Since 2012, South Korea, Japan, and China have undertaken 16 rounds of official negotiations on a three-way free trade agreement. At their most recent meeting in November 2019, the three countries agreed on a level of liberalisation greater than that of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), of which they are all members, encompassing areas such as trade in goods and services, investment, customs, competition, and e-commerce.

Early trade data from South Korea has revealed a strong expansion in exports, indicating a potential acceleration in economic growth for the country, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday.

According to figures released by the customs office, exports surged by 17.7 per cent in the first 20 days of May compared to last year.

This positive momentum comes with the backdrop of recovering global demand and positive export sectors, particularly in semiconductor production.

The strong export performance is expected to contribute to an upward revision of South Korea's annual economic growth forecast.

Following a better-than-expected 1.3 per cent expansion in the first quarter, analysts anticipate the Bank of Korea to raise its growth projection from the current 2.1 per cent.

This adjustment reflects the resilience of South Korea's export-driven economy and underscores the role of exports in driving overall economic recovery.

Semiconductor exports, a key driver of South Korea's economy, experienced a notable increase of 45.5 per cent in the first 20 days of May compared to last year.

Demand for semiconductors has been particularly strong, driven by orders from smartphone manufacturers, data centre operators, and artificial intelligence developers.

However, not all sectors saw growth, with declines observed in car sales and wireless communications device exports.

While exports to the United States and China registered modest gains, shipments to the European Union declined.

This mixed performance in export destinations highlights the importance of diversifying markets to mitigate risks associated with overreliance on specific regions.

Analysts predict a widening of the trade surplus for May, reflecting sustained export momentum.

Despite the positive outlook, downside risks persist for South Korea's economic growth.

Concerns linger over credit issues, particularly in the real estate sector, as well as uncertainties surrounding China's economic recovery.

Additionally, the fluctuating exchange rate poses challenges for South Korean exporters, impacting their earnings and increasing debt burdens.

Lim Dong-min, an independent economist and columnist, highlighted the dual nature of the exchange rate dynamics.

"It’s both good and bad for exporters, but overall it adds to uncertainties," Bloomberg quoted him as saying.

South Korean firms, deeply integrated into global supply chains, remain vulnerable to external shocks, underlining the need for proactive risk management strategies.

(With inputs from Bloomberg)

South Korea banned a viral propaganda song from North Korea, which gained popularity in TikTok, because it idolised Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong Un as a "friendly father" and "great leader".

South Korea banned a viral propaganda song from North Korea, which gained popularity in TikTok, because it idolised Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong Un as a "friendly father" and "great leader". The media regulator of South Korea said that the music video, which gained massive popularity on TikTok after it was released in April, violated the National Security Act of the country. "[The song] idolises Kim Jong Un and praises and glorifies him," said Seoul's Korea Communications Standards Commission, in a statement on Monday (May 20). Access to the government websites and media of North Korea has been blocked under the Security Act which penalises behaviours and speeches that are in favour of Kim Jong Un's regime. Also Read: North Korea fires multiple ballistic missiles after Kim's sister denies supplying arms to Russia The Friendly Father music video's 29 versions will be blocked, said the commission, however, it did not say how it will be done. The decision to block the song was taken after a request by South Korea's National Intelligence Service, it said. “The video is typical content linked to psychological warfare against South Korea, as it was posted on a channel operated to connect with the outside world and is mainly focused on unilaterally idolising and glorifying Kim,” said the regulator. South Koreans wish for no ban on the song to 'enjoy the joke' South Koreans' interest in the viral song increased after the imposition of a ban was announced. Some South Koreans said that the video should be left accessible "so that more people can enjoy the joke". "Friendly Father" has emerged as the latest among the pop songs being churned out by the propaganda machine of Pyongyang in the past 50 years. In the catchy, bright-tempo song, Kim has been described as “father” and “the Great”, which are the terms that were earlier reserved for the first leader of North Korea Kim Il Sung. Watch: North Korea: Kim Jong Un oversees tactical missile system “Let’s sing Kim Jong Un, the great leader/ Let’s brag about Kim Jong Un, our friendly father,” the song goes. Some TikTok users said that they play the song while exercising in the gym or doing homework, while others say that it has a nostalgic style which is a reminder of older Spanish and French pop music. North Korea and South Korea were divided after the Korean War came to an end in 1953 with an armistice. No peace treaty was signed between the two countries. (With inputs from agencies)

On Saturday (May 18), South Koreans closed their eyes and got comfortable for a sleeping contest aimed at raising awareness about the need of rest in a country with one of the world's poorest sleep quality rankings.

South Korea: Hundreds gather in South Korea for 'power nap' contest

Hundreds of South Koreans on Saturday (May 18) gathered in the capital Seoul for an unusual yet significant event: The sleeping contest. Dressed in sleepwear, people shut their eyes and got comfortable for one hour and 30 minutes at the Han River Park to send out an important message to fellow South Koreans and the world: Taking rest is important.

The event was held to raise awareness about the importance and significance of taking timely breaks and rests.

To level up the challenges for participants, some distractions like feather tickling, whispering and mosquito noises were used.

Then, their heart rate measurements were taken. The participant who experienced the largest deviation between the heart rate before and during the nap was to be declared the winner as it would indicate the best sleep quality.

Event organisers and participants said they wanted to bring the world's attention to the importance of sleep and rest in a world that has become too challenging for many.

“Our country is known for its competitive society, and the importance of sleep seems to be undervalued,” said Son Ji-hong, 24, who came to the contest with a neck pillow and sunglasses.

North Korea launches baliistic missile after US-South Korea drills

North Korea on Friday (May 17) launched multiple suspected short-range ballistic projectiles off its east coast, said South Korea.

This came hours after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's sister refuted the widespread accusations levelled against Pyongyang that it was shipping weapons to Russia.

This is the latest in a spate of similar incidents where Pyongyang has fired off cruise missiles, tactical rockets and hypersonic weapons in recent months which the country claims is their drive aimed at upgrading the defence system.

Earlier, South Korea and the United States alleged that Pyongyang was supplying arms to Russia, which they stated would be in violation of several UN sanctions that were imposed on both countries.

Seoul's army on Friday said that it had detected the launch of what it termed as "several flying objects presumed to be short-range ballistic missiles" into waters off North Korea's coast from the country's eastern Wonsan area.

The missiles reportedly travelled a distance of around 300 kilometres (186 miles), said the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He added that the military had "strengthened vigilance and surveillance in preparation for additional launches".

The launches also come just hours after Kim Jong Un's influential sister Kim Yo Jong denounced the US and South Korea over their repeated accusations, claiming that the nuclear-armed Pyongyang was sending its weapons to Russia for use in its offensive against Ukraine.

She alleged that Seoul and Washington were "misleading the public opinion" with their claims.

Kim inspects arms factories as Pyongyang denounces ‘monitoring activities’ by US

Earlier this week, Kim was seen visiting arms and ammunition factories after Pyongyang denounced what it termed as the "activities of monitoring sanctions against DPRK" by the United States and its allies.

Kim on Saturday (May 11) as well as Sunday (May 12) inspected weapons including sniper rifles and rocket launchers at the weapons manufacturing facilities and heaped praises on their quality.

He further directed the factories to implement production plans without fail, said the state media reports.

The North Korean leader on Friday (May 10) gained an understanding of the technically updated version of the 240 mm multiple rocket launcher system and oversaw the live test-fire of controllable shells for multiple rocket launchers manufactured at various national defence industrial enterprises.

"The updated multiple rocket launcher with high mobility and concentration of fire has an automatic fire combined control system and will be deployed to units of the Korean People's Army as replacement equipment from 2024 to 2026," KCNA said, adding such "a significant change" will soon be made in increasing the artillery combat ability of the North's army.

This came after North Korea's foreign ministry condemned what it described as an increased surveillance of North Korea by US allies under the pretence of monitoring the UN sanctions violations.

"The Democratic People's Republic Of Korea (DPRK) will take necessary measures to firmly defend the sovereignty and security of the state on the basis of a rigorous analysis of the negative influence being caused by the grave acts of some countries including UK, Canada, Germany, France, New Zealand and Australia taking part in the so-called 'activities of monitoring sanctions against DPRK,'" said North Korea's foreign ministry in a statement.

President Yeol calls for improvement in economic performance President Yeol said that there is a need to improve the country's economic performance. "I think the important thing going forward is indeed the economy. Corporate growth and job creation are important too but what I think is more important is to try harder to look for what is inconvenient in the life of each and every person and to resolve them," said the South Korean president. While speaking at the conference, he was standing behind a plaque which read: “The Buck Stops Here”. The ministry is set to address the challenges which will contribute to the fast-ageing population and record low birth rate. "This is not a matter we can take time to work on," he stated.
