Having weathered rain, heat, and bone-chilling cold for over one-and-a-half years, during which around 600 lives were lost, the farmers on Thursday decided to suspend their agitation after the government repealed three controversial agriculture laws.

The farmers have said that they will vacate Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders in Delhi after holding a victory parade on Saturday.

Announcing the decision, Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM)— an umbrella of various farmers' unions—said they would meet again in Delhi on January 15 to see the progress on the promises made by the government.

“We have decided to suspend our agitation. We will hold a review meeting on January 15. If the government doesn't fulfil its promises, we could resume our agitation,” ANI news agency quoted farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni as saying.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the SKM earlier in the day after a draft proposal from the government was received on the pending issues of farmers.&nbsp;

The demands of the farmers include a law on the minimum support price (MSP), withdrawal of the draft Electricity Amendments Bill, 2020/2021, withdrawal of criminal cases against farmers and compensation for the families of farmers who died during the year-long protest against the three farm laws, now repealed.&nbsp;

Earlier, the protesting farmers had received a letter from the Government of India, with promises of forming a committee on MSP and withdrawing cases against them immediately.

“As far as the matter of compensation is concerned, UP and Haryana have given in-principle consent,” the letter reads.

However, the final decision on ending the year-long farmers’ agitation would be taken by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), according to the farmers.

On November 19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in a national address announced that his government would be repealing the three contentious farm laws&nbsp;and urged farmers to return home.

However, farmers refused to budge from their spot as they asserted that they would leave only after a MSP guarantee and other demands were met.

Last Saturday, the SKM, which has been spearheading the agitation, formed a five-member panel on Saturday to hold talks with the government on the pending demands and had declared that a decision on withdrawing the agitation would be taken by Wednesday.

Accused Sarvjit Singh was taken into custody after he surrendered on Friday night for his alleged role in the lynching, said police. He was produced at a local court on Saturday and sent to seven days’ police custody.&nbsp;

According to reports, Singh had come to Singhu border when the contingent of Nihang Sikhs had arrived there in the first week of December last year. At the border, he was the leader of a unit that tended to the horses.&nbsp;

In several videos that came to the fore on Friday night, Singh took responsibility for killing Lakhbir Singh, a lower caste Dalit Sikh from a village in Punjab, claiming that he had desecrated the Sikh holy book.&nbsp;

Police had registered an FIR against unknown persons on Friday on charges of murder and common intention. &nbsp;

Police had said that they had received information around 5 am on Friday that Nihangs had hanged and tied a person to a barricade and his hand was chopped off. When the police reached the spot, the victim had died. &nbsp;

Eight people died in the October 3 incident in which four of them were farmers. Infuriated, the farmers then allegedly lynched some people in the vehicle. The other dead included two BJP workers and their driver.&nbsp;

Farmers alleged that the vehicle was being driven by minister Ajay Mishra's son Ashish Mishra. The minister has denied the charge, maintaining that his son was not there when the incident happened.&nbsp;

Nihang is an order of Sikh warriors, characterised by blue robes, antiquated arms such as swords and spears, and decorated turbans surmounted by steel quoits. According to experts, Nihangs originated from the Sanskrit word ‘nihshank’ which means without fear, unblemished, pure, carefree and indifferent to worldly gains and comfort.” &nbsp;

Nihangs had a major role in defending the Sikh Panth after the fall of the first Sikh rule (1710-15) when Mughal governors were killing Sikhs and during the onslaught of Afghan invader Ahmed Shah Durrani (1748-65).&nbsp;

The 19th-century Indian historian Rattan Singh Bhangu describes Nihangs as “unaffected by pain or comfort”, “given to meditation, penance and charity” and “complete warriors”.&nbsp;

Last year, a group of&nbsp;Nihangs had chopped off the hand of a policeman in Patiala with a sword after he asked them to show 'movement passes' during the Covid lockdown.&nbsp;

Long before, the Khalsa Sikhs were divided into two groups - One who took on the blue attire that Guru Gobind Singh used to wear at war and others decided not to follow any restrictions of colour or pattern. Nihang group confesses to murder of man at Singhu Border

The singer-actor&nbsp;Diljit Dosanjh, who was recently in news for a verbal Twitter spat with Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, made a surprise guest appearance at the Haryana-Delhi border — Singhu border — to support the protesting farmers in India.

He addressed the gathering of hundreds of farmers at the border. He took to the stage and urged the government to listen and fulfil the farmer's requests. "We have only one request to Centre..please fulfil the demands of our farmers. Everyone is sitting here peacefully and entire country is with farmers," he said.

"Our demand is the same that the government should withdraw all three farm laws. We want MSP should be guaranteed through the law," said Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Rajewal state general secretary Onkar Singh Agaul.

The farmers have also announced a 'Bharat Bandh' on December 08, and have threatened to block further in-ways to the national capital city, New Delhi, if the Government of India does not fulfil their demands.
