"Restaurants, shops, and the main market are all closed," a resident of second city Mandalay said while speaking to AFP. "There have been no street vendors since this morning, no early morning walkers."

Several pictures that surfaced on social media showed deserted streets and roads. According to reports by AFP, the streets of downtown Yangon&nbsp;were seen with no street vendors. Also, the famous Shwedagon pagoda, a Buddhist site usually full of visitors and pilgrims was all empty.&nbsp;

The strike came to an end at 4 pm, when Yangon neighbourhoods resounded to the noise of mass clapping. &nbsp;

The country has been in turmoil since the month of February, triggering nationwide protests. Over 1,300 people have been killed so far for protesting against the army.

This came in a few days after there were reports of several people being killed after a military truck drove into a crowd of protesters in Yangon. The peaceful rally was then violently dispersed, revealed a journalist and several eyewitnesses.

Speaking with AFP on the condition of anonymity, the journalist said, "They increased the speed when they got closer to the protesters, it was like they drove into them."

He further revealed that a few people, who were carrying banners in support of Aung San Suu Kyi, were hit and dragged to the ground. Also, the soldiers soon started firing at the crowd, he said.&nbsp;

While the United Nations has claimed that this incident would amount to the crimes against humanity, Myanmar's MRTV news reported that security forces "took action" on the protesters. Also, there was no mention of soldiers using a vehicle to disperse them.&nbsp;

Malnutrition is being deemed as Afghanistan's silent emergency. As per data released by UNICEF, Afghanistan has one of the world’s highest rates of stunting in children under five, that is 41 per cent.

The rate of wasting, the extreme manifestation of severe acute malnutrition, in Afghanistan is extremely high at 9.5 per cent.&nbsp;

A total of one in three adolescent girls suffers from anaemia, while only half of the Afghan babies are exclusively breastfed in their first six months. Also, only 12 per cent of Afghan children aged 6-24 months receive the right variety of food in the quantity needed for their age.

The pandemic has further contributed to the problem as there is an increase in the number of wasted children in Afghanistan and this situation remains a priority.

Not just children but the mothers are equally malnourished. Harmful diets of the mother results in a harmful cycle – malnourished infants grow up to become stunted mothers, generation after generation. "This is a cycle we must break", says UNICEF.&nbsp;

Afghanistan’s health system still faces several challenges. Some cultural practices and preferences related to food limit the potential development of the next generation of Afghanistan leaders.&nbsp;

Knowledge of good diets is still limited. Over the next year, UNICEF will support the Government in rolling out an intensive information campaign. Also, nutrition services are part of all government health services however there are areas that are less accessible for regular services leaving some children at high risk.&nbsp;

UNICEF is helping by providing health and nutrition mobile services, however, these could be expanded further.&nbsp;

Mothers are not aware of their own nutritional needs. "We need to improve their knowledge of, and access to, a healthy diet for themselves and their families", says UNICEF. The organization aims at supporting the government in training and supporting nutrition counsellors, community health workers, midwives and other health workers can teach families how to make small improvements in their eating habits that can result in big health gains.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi led a midnight protest Thursday against the Kathua and Unnao gang rapes at Delhi's India Gate.&nbsp;

"Like millions of Indians my heart hurts tonight. India simply cannot continue to treat its women the way it does," Rahul tweeted on Thursday. &nbsp;

Rahul said the protest would be a "silent, peaceful, candlelight vigil".&nbsp;

"Join me in a silent, peaceful, candlelight vigil at India Gate at midnight tonight to protest this violence and demand justice," Rahul tweeted.&nbsp;

The Kathua and Unnao gang rapes have left the nation in shock.&nbsp;

In the first incident, an eight-year-old girl was kept captive in a temple in Kathua, Jammu. The child was sedated and raped repeatedly.&nbsp;

The alleged mastermind was a retired revenue official and policemen were allegedly involved in the crime.&nbsp;

Eight people have so far been arrested.&nbsp;

The Unnao incident only came to light when the girl and her family tried to immolate themselves outside the residence of the Uttar Pradesh chief minister on Sunday.&nbsp;

The girl's father — she was 17 when she was allegedly gang-raped — died a few days later, reportedly in police custody.&nbsp;

The main accused is the BJP MLA from Unnao, Kuldeep Singh Sengar.&nbsp;

An FIR was finally filed on Thursday.&nbsp;

Sengar has been accused of, among other crimes, rape and kidnapping but he has not yet been arrested with the police saying the CBI would do so.&nbsp;

The case has since been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.&nbsp;
