The North American box office got a big boost as Disney's new "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," featuring Marvel's first leading Asian superhero, scored an unexpectedly strong $71.4 million opening, industry observer Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday.

"This is a fantastic opening on a traditionally quiet Labor Day weekend," said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. "The three-day number is a record-breaker for the holiday, a positive finish to the summer... (marking) a sensational weekend for the industry."

"Shang-Chi" stars Canadian actor, stuntman and erstwhile Deloitte accountant Simu Liu as Marvel's newest superhero, a former assassin in the shadow of an evil father. It also features Awkwafina, Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh.

The film, which has drawn strong reviews for its choreography and Asian representation, enjoyed the second biggest opening of this pandemic year, behind Marvel's "Black Widow," which had an $80 million opening.

By way of comparison, Universal's slasher film "Candyman" topped last weekend's box office with just $22 million before slipping to second place this weekend with a three-day take of $10.6 million ($13 million for four days). It stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.&nbsp;

In third place this weekend was "Free Guy" from 20th Century, at $8.7 million ($11.2 million for four days). The sci-fi comedy stars Ryan Reynolds as an everyman bank teller who finds himself inside a huge video game.

Paramount animation "PAW Patrol: The Movie" came in fourth, at $4 million ($5.2 million for four days). It tells the story of a boy and the brave young pups who help him save their city from an impeachment-worthy mayor.

And in fifth was Disney's family adventure film "Jungle Cruise," with a take of $3.95 million ($5.2 million for four days).

Rounding out the top 10 were:

"Don't Breathe 2" ($2.2 million for three days; $2.7 million for four)

"Respect" ($1.2 million; $1.5 million)

"The Suicide Squad" ($905,000; $1.1 million)

"Black Widow" ($748,000; $903,000)

While interacting with Hindustan Times, Cretton was asked about his ‘pitch’ for marvel, to which he replied saying, “My pitch at its core was an intimate family drama. I wanted to make sure that the heart of our story would be relatable to anybody. And that was the core of my concern, to make sure that this story was something that would break a lot of stereotypes connected to Asian characters in the past.”

"Maybe it’s stupidity! I have always prided myself on being able to speak my mind. During my time on Kim’s Convenience, a wonderful show that I am proud to have worked on, I learnt to find my voice. From the very beginning on that show, they kept giving me the same questions on diversity and what’s it like to be in the first Asian Canadian sitcom, etc. I went through an evolutionary process of learning to have a voice and how to use it, knowing when to step in. I don’t always get it right, for sure. However, it’s better to speak your mind than hold your tongue and wish you had said something," he told TOI.

 
When quizzed about his knowledge of Bollywood and its actors, Liu replied saying, "I like Shah Rukh Khan and Irrfan. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is so beautiful and, of course, Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Those are the ones that come to my mind right now. I am going to make a promise that I will be watching more Indian films, so when you ask me this question again, I will have more names and movies to add to that list for sure."

Excited for the upcoming Marvel film ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’? There are reports that main actor Simu Liu’s fighting style is closely inspired from Jackie Chan’s.&nbsp;

While the world is aware of Jackie Chan’s onscreen fighting skills, we think Simu Liu has tried to bring the same charisma in his film.&nbsp;

When the trailer for 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings' released, fans were quick to point out that it looked like maybe Jackie had taught a thing or two to Simu. Jackie’s famous usage of props including ropes and ladders like in 'Rush Hour 2' or 'First Strike' is one that almost everyone remembers.&nbsp;

The clip from the Marvel film features Simu's character fighting with the help of his varsity-style jacket. He deftly takes it half off to punch a bad guy, and, in the next instant, puts it back on to resume his attack. We have seen a similar stunt by Jackie Chan &nbsp;in his 1995 film ‘Rumble in the Bronx’.

Additionally, the late Brad Allan, who served as a supervising stunt coordinator on 'Shang-Chi', collaborated with Jackie on films including the last two ‘Rush Hour’ movies, ‘The Tuxedo’, and both ‘Shanghai’ movies.
