The residents of United Arab Emirates keen on exploring Europe faced significant financial losses due to rejected Schengen visa applications in 2023, totalling AED16.8 million ($4.57 million), according to a recent report. The massive rejection rate has left many travellers disappointed and significantly out of pocket.

The number of rejected visa applications from the UAE last year stood at 22.44 per cent. This is a 25 per cent increase from the previous year. Schengen Visa Info, which claims to have guided "more than 280 million individuals" since 2013, reported this worrying trend.

As of June 11, 2024, the cost of a Schengen visa application was nearly AED320 ($87.12), excluding the additional service fees which varies by location. To add to the financial burden, the European Commission lately announced a 12 per cent global increase in Schengen visa fees (visa type C).

But France has a visa rejection rate of 20.12 per cent, which means that it saw the largest number of visas rejected at 27,691 applications. Spain was at the second spot in this category with 18.5 per cent, which are 14,852 visa applications.&nbsp;

 
Though Switzerland’s rate of rejection was as low as 13.2 per cent because the volume of applications received was high, it amounted to a total of 13,984 visas being denied.&nbsp;

Online applications will reduce the number of trips to the consulate for travellers and make the process smoother for national administrations.”

According to the European Council statement, the proposed new rules will create a visa application platform that will allow all applicants for Schengen visas to apply for visas from one single platform. This will forward them to the relevant national visa systems.&nbsp;

Over this platform, visa platforms will be able to upload electronic copies of their travel and all supporting documents and pay their visa fees. They will also be notified of the decision concerning their visas.&nbsp;

Other features of the digitised Schengen visa

1. Besides the digitisation of visas, it will also put an end to the risk of falsification and theft of visa stickers.&nbsp;

2. Only in-person appearance will be required for the first-time consulate or for applicants whose biometric data is invalid.&nbsp;

3. The visas will also be issued in digital format, a 2D barcode at is cryptographically signed.&nbsp;
