On Wednesday, the southern Tamil Nadu state government notified the country's first-ever sanctuary dedicated to this arboreal animal.

The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forest, has notified 11,806 hectares of forest areas in Karur and Dindigul districts, in the southern Indian state as the country's first Slender Loris Sanctuary.

According to the Tamil Nadu government,&nbsp;Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary, which spans 7 blocks in Karur and Dindigul districts, has notified under Section 26(A) (1) (b) of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.&nbsp;

In recent months, the Tamil Nadu government had also announced to notify India's first Dugong Conservation reserve in the Palk Bay, the narrow strip of sea that connects India's Tamil Nadu and the Indian Ocean littoral nation Sri Lanka. In addition to this, bird sanctuaries, elephant reserves etc. have also been notified during the last year and a half.

A butterfly sanctuary in Texas was forced to shut down after threats from the supporters of former US president Donald Trump who accused the facility of helping illegal immigrants enter the US.

A conspiracy was doing the rounds that the National Butterfly Center in Texas, located on the banks of the Rio Grande that separates the United States from Mexico, has been helping immigrants enter America illegally.

Several US media reported that a far-right group, QAnon, was responsible for perpetuating the lies. It is being reported that the group was trying to target the facility after the latter filed a complaint against the construction of the border wall, citing the threat&nbsp;to the butterfly habitat.

The construction of a wall along the Mexico border was one of the poll planks of Trump.

The facility was already closed between January 28 and 30 because of “credible threats” related to an event held by supporters of the former president in nearby McAllen.

Photos purporting to be from the centre had been circulating along with messages accusing the organisation of helping smugglers bring migrants to the United States.

Several right-wing activists have posted videos on social media of themselves in front of the sanctuary.

"We don't think the threat has passed," the sanctuary's executive director Marianna Trevino Wright told AFP on Wednesday, citing repeated "provocations" from these individuals.

The private sanctuary's gardens are home to more than 200 species of butterfly as well as bobcats, coyotes, peccaries, armadillos and Texas tortoises.

The QAnon far-right conspiracy movement began in 2017 with claims that the Democrats ran a satanic child-kidnapping sex-trafficking ring, and it has been blamed for fuelling a riot at the US Capitol on January 6 last year.

Mexico's at-risk bees have found a new oasis in the southern state of Oaxaca. Threatened by pesticides, intensive agriculture and the effects of climate change, a sanctuary of sunflowers set up by local farmers could be a literal lifesaver for the black and gold insects.

The four-month-old calf was rescued from a hunter's snare trap in the forest of Myanmar's southwest Ayeyarwaddy region last month and is now being looked after by staff at the Wingabaw elephant sanctuary, an hour's drive northeast of Yangon.

"When she arrived at the camp last month, her leg was terribly sore", said Than Naing Oo, the camp veterinarian, as he cleaned the injury.

"Now she is getting better as we treat her with medicine twice a day."

Than Naing Oo said Ayeyar Sein's parents were nowhere to be seen near the trap and were most likely killed by poachers.

Poachers kill elephants for their tusks and skin, which are used to make jewellery and traditional medicine, among other things.

"The big challenge for us in taking care of baby elephants is to keep them alive", said Shwe Yi Win Htet, manager at the camp, adding that two young elephants had died in their care.

"They do not have mothers to feed them and are instead fed with powdered milk. That's why all of us are looking after them very carefully. Our priority is to prolong their lives", she said.

Officials named the four-month-old calf Ayeyar Sein in accordance with the tradition of giving orphans the first name of the state where they are found.

Wingabaw elephant camp is a government-owned shelter and 20 elephants rescued from similar situations are currently kept there.

Eight are orphaned baby elephants.

Ayeyar Sein will be raised with the other orphans in the camp after her injury has healed. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Five rangers and a driver were killed on Monday in an ambush in the Virunga National Park, the Democratic Republic of Congo's famed haven for gorillas and other endangered species, the park said.

"We have sadly lost six rangers," park spokesman Joel Malembe told AFP, adding that the team was ambushed while driving between the sectors of Lulimba and Ishasha, near the border with Uganda.
