As he went up on stage to receive the award, the veteran actor took a dig at US President Donald Trump without mentioning him by name. &nbsp;De Niro's dig was in reference to Trump facing Senate trial this week on impeachment charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. 
 
"There’s right, and there’s wrong and there's common sense, and there’s abuse of power, and as a citizen, I have as much right as anyone else ... to voice my opinion," the actor said. "And if I have a bigger voice because of my situation, I’m going to use it whenever I see a blatant abuse of power. And that’s all I’m going say about that tonight," the actor said.&nbsp;

He then went on to thank his "comrades in arms" for bestowing the lifetime achievement honour, presented by the SAG-AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Actors) union.

A versatile actor with more than 100 films to his credit, De Niro, 76, also is co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, established to help revitalize lower Manhattan after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that reduced the World Trade Center to ruins.

Although known for his often-taciturn demeanour in public appearances while strictly guarding his private life, De Niro has emerged as one of Trump's most vocal critics outside of political circles.&nbsp;

This isn't the first time that the actor has critiqued Trump on a public platform. In 2018, he launched an expletive-laden attack on Trump on live television as a presenter on the stage of the Tony Awards for Broadway theatre. Trump responded on Twitter by calling De Niro "a very low-key individual."

Phoenix's terrifying performance as a loner who finds fame through violence in "Joker" has swept awards season.

"I am standing on the shoulders of my favorite actor - Heath Ledger," Phoenix said on Sunday, referring to the actor who won a posthumous Oscar in 2009 for his turn playing the comic book villain.

Indian-origin actor Aziz Ansari skipped the SAG Awards ceremony amid the allegations of sexual misconduct levelled against him by a woman with whom he went on a date last year. 
 
The 39-year-old actor, who was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Master of None, did not receive any applause when his name was called out. 
 
It was the first award of the evening.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) ceremony will be a women`s affair, organizers of one of Hollywood`s biggest awards shows said on Wednesday, a tribute at a time when the entertainment industry has been roiled by a sexual misconduct scandal as well as the struggle for gender equality in front of and behind the camera. 
 
Women will present all 13 of the SAG awards at the Jan. 21 dinner in Los Angeles honouring the best of film and television, in a first for the organization, which represents some 160,000 actors.

&quot;We are acknowledging the year of the woman,&quot; Kathy Connell, the executive producer of the ceremony, told Reuters. 
 
The ceremony will also be hosted by a woman, The Good Place&nbsp;actress Kristen Bell.

&quot;Our women are some of the most recognizable, most famous women in the world and they don`t have economic equality. They don`t have creative equality, and as we have learned, they don`t have safety either,&quot; Connell said. 
&quot;If these famous women don`t have it, then what does it say about the rest of the country?&quot; 
 
The ceremony details were disclosed the same day that SAG announced the nominations for the 2018 awards.
