The Balkan nation of Albania on Monday (Mar 4) unveiled a refurbished airbase to be used by the NATO alliance, a move expected to irk Moscow.

The airbase is located in an Albanian city formerly named after Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. The base once housed dozens of Soviet- and Chinese-made planes left for years to rust in the open air.

The new NATO airbase in ‘Stalin city’ doesn’t only show Albania’s shift towards the West but also highlights NATO’s expanding footprints in southeast Europe as tensions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine rattle the region.

Kucova transforms into a NATO-backed facility

While inaugurating the base, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama stressed that the importance of the base "extended beyond Albania's borders".

Italian Eurofighters and US F-16s and F-35s staged a flyover before landing on the new runaway during the event attended by NATO representatives and diplomats.

In 2009, Albania ended decades of global isolation by joining NATO. Following the collapse of the communist regime in 1990, Albania shifted towards the West.

The establishment of the new air base is likely to provoke Moscow, which staunchly opposes NATO expansion into Eastern and Central Europe, particularly in the Balkans, a region historically caught between Eastern and Western influences.

Ukraine claims to have sunk Russian warship near Crimea using sea drones

A German minister on Sunday (Mar 3) claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin was seeking to destabilise the country using the wiretap leak. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said, "It is about using this recording to destabilise and unsettle us," adding that he "hoped that Putin will not succeed".

What's the wiretap leak episode?

In what came as a massive embarrassment for Berlin, alleged call recordings of the German defence forces over the Ukraine war were posted on Russian social media by a state-backed journalist. Margarita Simonyan, the head of the Russia Today (RT) channel, posted the audio clip on her telegram channel, allegedly featuring German officers “discussing how to strike the Crimea bridge”, which links Russia to the Ukrainian peninsula.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reacted to the potential leak of sensitive communication by saying that a full investigation will be launched soon. Calling the leak “very serious,” Scholz said it was “now being clarified very carefully, very intensively and very quickly”.

A spokesperson for the German defence ministry suggested a conversation in the air force division was “intercepted.”

“We are currently unable to say for certain whether changes were made to the recorded or transcribed version that is circulating on social media,” the official told the news agency AFP.

The ‘leaked’ audio file

Officials talking on the alleged military call appear to be discussing the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv. Ukraine has long demanded Berlin supply it with the missiles but Scholz has rejected it publicly so far.

The officials can also be heard talking about potential military targets and the training of Ukrainian soldiers.

A section of German media was later reporting that the said military conversation took place on WebEx platform, and not on a secret internal army network, making it easier for Russia to intercept.

Political temperature soars

The alleged call recording, 38-minute-long, has set the cat among the pigeons in German politics, with top political leaders expressing grave concerns.

Roderich Kiesewetter, from Germany’s opposition conservatives, warned that further recordings might also be leaked.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, chair of the defence committee in Germany’s parliament, said the leak was an obvious warning by Russia against the delivery of weapons to Ukraine.

Russia said the revelation reflected how Germany has turned into their “sworn enemies.”

Are we headed for a World War? Here are the signs

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday promised a full investigation after what appeared to be a recording of confidential army talks on the Ukraine war was posted on Russian social media, in a potentially huge embarrassment for Berlin.

The head of Russia's state-backed RT channel, Margarita Simonyan, on Friday posted the 38-minute audio recording of what she claimed were German army officers on February 19 discussing striking Crimea.

"What is being reported is a very serious matter and that is why it is now being investigated very carefully, very intensively and very quickly," Scholz said while on a visit to Rome.

In the recording, discussions can be heard on the possible use by Ukrainian forces of German-made Taurus missiles and their potential impact.

Topics include aiming the missiles at targets such as a key bridge over the Kerch Strait linking the Russian mainland to Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

The discussions also cover the use of missiles provided to Kyiv by France and Britain.

Experts consulted by Der Spiegel magazine said they believed the recording was authentic.

A defence ministry spokeswoman told AFP it was investigating "whether communications in the air force sector were intercepted".

Kyiv has long been clamouring for Germany to provide it with Taurus missiles, which can reach targets up to 500 kilometres (about 300 miles) away.

Scholz has so far refused to send the missiles, fearing that it would lead to an escalation of the conflict.

"If this story turns out to be true, it would be a highly problematic event," Green party politician Konstantin von Notz told the RND broadcaster.

"The question arises as to whether this is a one-off incident or a structural safety problem," he added.

Speaking at a diplomatic forum in Turkey on Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the recording indicates that Ukraine and its backers "do not want to change their course at all, and want to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia on the battlefield".

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova demanded that Germany "promptly" provide explanations for the discussion.

The acquisition of German Taurus missiles would provide a massive boost for Ukraine as Kyiv struggles to fend off Russia's invasion.

France and Britain have supplied Kyiv with SCALP or Storm Shadow missiles, both of which have a range of about 250 kilometres.

But Scholz said last week that Germany could not justify matching British and French moves in sending long-range missiles to Ukraine and supporting the weapon system's deployment.

"This is a very long-range weapon, and what the British and French are doing in terms of targeting and supporting targeting cannot be done in Germany," Scholz said, without specifying exactly what he meant.

Britain denied that it had any direct involvement in operating the missiles.

"Ukraine's use of Storm Shadow and its targeting processes are the business of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," a Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesperson said in a statement to AFP.

Roderich Kiesewetter, from Germany's opposition conservatives, warned that further recordings may also be leaked.

"A number of other conversations will certainly have been intercepted and may be leaked at a later date for Russia's benefit," he told broadcaster ZDF.

It can be assumed "that the conversation was deliberately leaked by Russia at this point in time with a specific intention", namely "to prevent Taurus delivery by Germany", he said.

According to Der Spiegel, the videoconference was held not on a secret internal army network but on the WebEx platform.

Also read: Russian drone assault in Odesa claims two lives, leaves eight injured "What is being reported is a very serious matter and that is why it is now being investigated very carefully, very intensively and very quickly," Scholz said while on a visit to Rome. A defence ministry spokeswoman told AFP it was investigating "whether communications in the air force sector were intercepted". - 'Sworn enemies' - Kyiv has long been clamouring for Germany to provide it with Taurus missiles, which can reach targets up to 500 kilometres (about 300 miles) away. Following a sitdown with Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama on Wednesday, the Ukrainian president said the two sides were exploring further defence cooperation. "Since the first days of the full-scale invasion, Albania has supported Ukraine in our struggle for freedom and territorial integrity," Zelensky wrote on X. "Today we also discussed Ukraine's defence needs and potential joint arms production," he added. - Urgent need for help - Albania, a NATO member since 2009, has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine but has stayed largely quiet in public about supplying Kyiv with arms. Leaders from across the Balkans -- including Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani -- were in attendance at the summit in Tirana. Already outgunned, his country is fending off a renewed Russian offensive with dwindling ammunition that has had to be rationed. - US aid dries up - EU allies are rallying to address that shortfall with a Czech-led plan to buy artillery from outside the bloc. More than two years after Russia's invasion, the EU is facing the prospect of having to shoulder more of the aid burden as funds from the United States dry up. Political infighting in the US Congress has stalled a vital $60 billion aid package, with the Republican right-wing, led by 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump, souring against Ukraine's cause. House Speaker Mike Johnson, an ally of former president Donald Trump and head of a razor-thin Republican majority, has refused to allow a vote on the package. Before arriving in Tirana, Zelensky stopped in Saudi Arabia, where he sought to promote his peace plan and discuss potential prisoner of war exchanges. Saudi Arabia maintains relations with both Russia and Ukraine and has mediated between the warring parties before, including a deal struck in September 2022 that saw the release of more than 200 captive Ukrainians.
