UK is investigating dozens of firms suspected of breaching sanctions on Russian oil, introduced after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, reports BBC. Most of the accused businesses hail from the maritime insurance industry. The UK broadcaster also revealed that no fines were imposed so far on any suspected firm, despite 15 cases already being concluded. At least 37 files are still open and a total of 52 firms are being probed, the report revealed.

UK treasury said the investigation was expected to take time due to the ‘complexity’ of the cases.

Treasury’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) is leading the investigations against the accused businesses.

Anti-corruption organisation Global Witness has blasted UK for not taking action against the firms, saying the government must punish the businesses with “bold” measures.

UK firms breached Russia oil price cap?

Notably, Western nations introduced a price cap on Russian oil in 2022 to reduce Moscow’s energy profits without restricting the flow of crude in the international market.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at 10 Downing Street in London on Thursday for talks with the leaders of Britain and NATO on his “victory plan” for the war against Russia.

Zelensky is meeting Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, before traveling to Paris for talks with President Emmanuel Macron. Zelensky says he will also meet the leaders of Germany and Italy this week to discuss the plan.

He had been due to present his blueprint at a weekend meeting of Western leaders and defence ministers in Germany, but it has been postponed because U.S. President Joe Biden said he had to stay home to respond to Hurricane Milton's landfall in Florida.

Zelensky said Wednesday he hoped the meeting could be rescheduled soon.

The details of Zelensky's plan have been kept under wraps, but contours have emerged, including the need for fast action on decisions Western allies have been mulling since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Zelensky said Wednesday at a summit in Croatia with leaders of southeastern European states that the plan seeks to strengthen Ukraine “both geopolitically and on the battlefield” before any kind of dialogue with Russia.

“Weakness of any of our allies will inspire (Russian President Vladimir) Putin,” he said. “That's why we're asking them to strengthen us, in terms of security guarantees, in terms of weapons, in terms of our future after this war. In my view, he (Putin) only understands force.” Kyiv is still awaiting word from Western partners on its repeated requests to use the long-range weapons they provide to hit targets deep inside Russia. While some, including the U.K., are thought to be willing, Biden has held back out of concern it could escalate the conflict.

Ukraine's leader last visited London in July, soon after Starmer's Labour Party government was elected, when he addressed a meeting of the British Cabinet.

Starmer's spokesman, Dave Pares, said Thursday's meeting would involve “broad strategic discussions” on UK and allied support for Ukraine during a “crucial period,” rather than specific decisions.

Zelensky meets UK, NATO leaders to rally support for 'victory plan'

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has warned that Ukraine could be facing its toughest winter since the start of Russia's invasion. As the war grinds on, Ukraine's critical infrastructure, including energy supplies, is under relentless attack, raising concerns about the country’s ability to withstand the cold months ahead. Stoltenberg emphasized the need for continued support from NATO allies, including military aid and humanitarian assistance, to help Ukraine endure the harsh winter conditions. The upcoming winter could further strain the resilience of Ukrainian forces and civilians as they face continued Russian aggression and mounting logistical challenges.

Russia-Ukraine War: Russia Hammers Ukraine's Energy & Military Infrastructures

Kyiv said Monday that its forces struck a large oil terminal overnight on the occupied Crimean peninsula as Moscow claimed the capture of another village in east Ukraine.

Kyiv said Monday that its forces struck a large oil terminal overnight on the occupied Crimean peninsula as Moscow claimed the capture of another village in east Ukraine. Kyiv has ramped up strikes targeting Russia's energy sector in recent months, aiming to dent revenues used by Moscow to fund its invasion, now grinding through its third year. "At night, a successful strike was carried out on the enemy's offshore oil terminal in temporarily occupied Feodosia, Crimea," the Ukrainian military said in a post on social media. Russian-installed authorities in Crimea said a fire had broken out at an oil facility in the Black Sea port town of some 70,000 people and that there were no casualties. The defence ministry said that 12 Ukrainian attack drones had been downed over the peninsula overnight, of a total of 21 deployed by Kyiv against Russian targets. Also read: Iran’s Quds Force chief Esmail Qaani confirmed 'in good health' "The Feodosia terminal is the largest in Crimea in terms of transshipment of oil products, which were used, among other things, to meet the needs of the Russian occupation army," the Ukrainian military said, vowing to continue such attacks. Ukraine insists the strikes are fair retaliation for Russian attacks on its own energy infrastructure that have plunged millions into darkness. Russia's defence ministry, meanwhile, claimed the capture of a village in eastern Ukraine close to the strategically important city of Pokrovsk. The defence ministry in a briefing said it captured the village of Grodivka, a settlement in the Donetsk region near Pokrovsk, as Russian troops close in on the key logistics hub. The settlement with an estimated pre-war population of around 2,000 is the latest in a series of towns in the Donetsk region to have fallen to Russian forces, as they push towards Pokrovsk. Last week, Ukraine's army said that it had withdrawn from the mining town of Vugledar also in the Donetsk region, handing Russia one of its most significant territorial advances in weeks. In a wave of separate attacks Monday, Ukrainian authorities said three civilians had been killed in overnight Russian attacks -- two brothers aged 35 and 38 in the eastern region of Sumy and a 61-year-old woman in the southern Kherson region. Also read: One year of Gaza war: Hamas fires rocket barrage targeting Israel's Tel Aviv The governor of Kherson later said a Russian strike on the town had wounded 13 people and damaged an educational facility and various residential buildings were damaged. And in the Zaporizhzhia region, which Russia claimed to have annexed alongside three other Ukrainian regions in 2022, three people were wounded after Russian attacks on infrastructure facilities, local authorities said. Russian forces also launched several missiles and dozens of drones overnight at Ukraine, the air force in Kyiv said, with two missiles shot down over the capital and the third exploding near an airfield in the central Khmelnytsky region. Authorities in Kyiv said debris from the downed missiles had landed near a kindergarten.
