US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday took to the stage of a Kyiv bar for a guitar performance of “Rockin’ in the Free World”, in a bid to send a message of defiance and hope, and highlight that the US and much of the world was fighting not just for Ukraine but for the free world.

However, Blinken landed in hot water after visuals from his performance sparked an angry backlash from Ukrainians, who chastised Washington’s top diplomat for an ill-judged jam session while Ukrainian troops are fighting in trenches, struggling to hold back a Russian advance amid a shortage of weapons.

“One word is enough to describe US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s evening in Kyiv yesterday: inappropriate,” said Svitlana Matviyenko, head of the Agency for Legislative Initiatives NGO.

Blinken, who is in Kyiv this week has pledged unwavering US support to Ukraine as Russia has intensified attacks in Ukraine.

He played a rendition of Neil Young’s 1989 rock anthem with Ukrainian musicians at a famed Kyiv bar, Barman Dictat.

“I know this is a really, really difficult time. Your soldiers, your citizens, particularly in the northeast in Kharkiv are suffering tremendously,” he said on stage, holding a red electric guitar.

“But they need to know, you need to know, the United States is with you... They’re fighting not just for a free Ukraine but for the free world,” he added.

Blinken is the first senior US official to travel to Ukraine after US Congress last month passed a $61 billion military aid package following a delay of several months during which Russia gained advantage in the battlefield.

Ukrainian lawmaker Bogdan Yaremenko, a former diplomat and MP from President Volodymyr Zelensky’s party, said the performance was ill-timed, coming after US aid delays cost Ukraine lives and territory.

“The message is not hard to understand, but it’s not getting through,” he said in a Facebook post.

Kyiv has been on the back foot on the battlefield for months as Russian troops have slowly advanced, taking advantage of Ukraine’s shortages of troop manpower and artillery shells.

“With all due respect, it’s a mistake. The message is wrong,” said Valeriy Chaly, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States from 2015 to 2019.

Germany, as per reports, is considering the reintroduction of conscription for all 18-year-olds amidst escalating tensions with Russia.

According to a report by The Sunday Telegraph, this move is driven by concerns over a potential full-scale NATO conflict with Russia.

What's the plan?

The report states that three potential plans are under the final stage of discussion, and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius is expected to announce formal plans next month. Two of these plans reportedly include compulsory one year conscription for all men at the age of 18.

One approach would require both men and women, upon turning 18, to serve, expanding the conscription that previously applied only to men.

Including women in mandatory conscription would require a constitutional amendment, yet, as per Daily Mail, military insiders suggest that such a change would "most likely to receive societal approval".

Another strategy focusing solely on 18-year-old men will reportedly include a selection process where individuals would complete an online form and could subsequently be chosen for service.

The third option, as per the report, would forego conscription entirely, instead focusing on "optimising" the existing military framework through intensified, proactive recruitment efforts.

However, during a recent visit to Washington, Pistorius expressed his 'conviction' that Germany "needs a form of military conscription".

Germany had suspended compulsory military conscription in 2011, a decision which Pistorius has previously described as a "mistake".

Why compulsory military service?

These discussions, as per Daily Mail, are set against a backdrop of heightened global tension following Russian President Vladimir Putin's declaration that his nuclear forces are at full readiness.

In an unsettling speech, on Thursday (May 9) Putin hailed the valour of Russian troops in Ukraine and accused the "collective West" of "fuelling regional conflicts, inter-ethnic and inter-religious strife and trying to contain sovereign and independent centres of global development". He also issued a warning that the Kremlin intends to avoid global conflict, but was ready to face any threat to Russia's security.

Ukraine strikes Russian regions in the border area

Four people have been killed by strikes in a Russian-held part of eastern Ukraine and a Russian border region, local officials said on Monday (May 13). The Russian-installed leader of the eastern Lugansk region of Ukraine said rockets had hit an industrial zone in the territory.

The region was occupied by Moscow during the course of the ongoing war against Ukraine.

"We already know of three killed and four wounded" in the attack on Krasnodon, which is known as Sorokyne in Ukrainian, the official, Leonid Pasechnik, said on social media.

Earlier, Russian officials said that at least 15 people were killed and scores injured on Sunday when a section of a Russian apartment block collapsed after being struck by fragments of a Soviet-era missile in Belgorod. As per the official, the missile was launched by Ukraine and shot down by Russia.

In recent weeks, Russia and Ukraine have escalated aerial attacks on each other's border regions, but the one that happened on Sunday was one of the deadliest attacks to date on the region of Belgorod.

Russian officials claimed that Ukraine launched a massive missile attack, involving Tochka ballistic missiles and Adler and RM-70 Vampire (MLRS) multiple-launch rocket systems.

Russia's defence ministry said at least 12 missiles were involved in the Belgorod strikes, which it called a "terrorist attack on residential areas".

"Fragments of one of the downed Tochka-U missiles damaged an apartment building in the city of Belgorod," the ministry said.

The Russian defence ministry said that the Ukrainian missile hit a “residential district” in Belgorod after it was intercepted by air defences. The attack, according to the ministry, took place at 08:40 GMT and involved at least 12 missiles.

Both Moscow and Kyiv have denied that they target civilians, but the United Nations agency OHCHR, earlier this year, reported a total of 30,457 civilian casualties since the beginning of the war.

If West wants to fight for Ukraine on the battlefield, Russia is fully prepared for it, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday (May 13).

"It's their right - if they want it to be on the battlefield, it will be on the battlefield," state-run news agency RIA cited Lavrov as saying.

Significantly, Russia has intensified its warnings regarding the risks associated with a direct confrontation with NATO, especially after French President Emmanuel Macron declined to dismiss the possibility of deploying Western troops to the region at some stage.

The Kremlin last week said that sending NATO troops into Ukraine would potentially be extremely dangerous. President Vladimir Putin has said it could lead to World War Three.

Lavrov, who has served two decades as foreign minister, was speaking at a parliamentary hearing on his renomination to the post in a new government being formed after Putin started a fresh six-year term this month.

According to the news agency RIA, Lavrov remarked that the upcoming peace talks on Ukraine scheduled to occur in Switzerland next month, excluding Russia, were akin to issuing an ultimatum to Moscow.

The United Kingdom, on Wednesday (May 8) said that it will expel Russia’s defence attache for being “an undeclared military intelligence officer”. Britain will also shut several Russian diplomatic premises and limit the length of Russian diplomatic visas in response to what British Home Secretary James Cleverly called Moscow’s “malign activity”.

Cleverly told the Parliament that Britain will expel the Russian defence attache who he claims was an “undeclared military intelligence officer.”

He also said that the UK will remove the diplomatic status of several Russian-owned properties, including one in Sussex, southern England, and another in London “which we believe have been used for intelligence purposes”.

Britain will also introduce new restrictions on Russian diplomatic visas such as a cap on the length of time that diplomats can spend in the UK, Cleverly added.

“We should expect accusations of Russophobia, conspiracy theories and hysteria from the Russian government,” the home secretary warned.

Rise in ‘malign’ activity in UK

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the UK has introduced a wave of sanctions against Moscow. Cleverly said the Conservative government would not falter in its support of Kyiv.

The recent move also comes after Britain said that it is concerned at an apparent increase in “malign” Russian activity on UK soil, including an arson attack which was allegedly linked to Moscow, last month.

“Our message to Russia is clear: stop this illegal war, withdraw your troops from Ukraine, cease this malign activity,” said the home secretary.

Hundreds of Cubans have been hired by the Russian military to fight in its war against Ukraine, a BBC report has claimed. Russia’s lucrative army contracts are what is forcing nationals of the low-income country to join the army, for which they get about $2,000 a month. Some are also driven by the higher chances of getting a permanent residency or citizenship in Russia. The passport details of such 200 Cuban nationals were leaked online by a Ukraine-based group called InformNapalm last year. A basic Facebook search shows at least 31 of them currently residing in Russia, often posting pictures of themselves wearing Russian military uniform, or in locations that bear Russian street signs or Russian number plates. Why Cubans? For Russia, bringing Cubans into the country is easier and straightforward. Both nations have been allies since the Cold War days and Cubans don’t need a travel visa to enter Russia. Since Cuba is hit by a massive economic crisis, some may find Russia’s lucrative offer worthy of taking a shot. Watch: Russia-Ukraine War: Russia displays Western tanks captured in Ukraine war × It also helps Russia recruit more people into the army that has reportedly suffered causalities in thousands since the start of the war in Ukraine. The drive to enlist foreign nationals has also helped the Kremlin to avoid the mobilisation of Russian men, which carries certain political risks for President Vladimir Putin. However, it’s not clear how many Cuban nationals have joined the Russian army so far. According to a Cuban officer in Russia, some Cuban fighters have been deployed in Russia-occupied parts of Ukraine. Cuban authorities not pleased Last September, Cuban authorities said they had arrested 17 people in connection with the recruitment drive. Later, Cuba's ambassador to Russia, Julio Antonio Garmendía Peña, said in a statement Havana had nothing against people who wanted to "simply sign a contract and legally take part in this operation alongside the Russian army". Soon after, Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla clarified Havana was against "the participation of Cuban citizens in conflicts of any sort". (With inputs from agencies)

Russia intensifies attacks in Ukraine's east, five killed

A 98-year-old woman from Ukraine recounted how she traversed 10 kilometres amid heavy shelling, using sticks for support and sleeping on the ground.

Originally from Ocheretyne in Donetsk, now under Russian occupation, she wanted to reach areas controlled by Kyiv. In a video shared by Ukraine's police on social media, the woman, known as Lidia Stepanivna, shared that despite facing a major risk to her life, she kept going.

"I survived that war (World War Two), and I am surviving this war," Stepanivna said in the video, which shows her sitting on a bed in a shelter, dressed in an oversized coat and a scarf tied on her head, a wooden stick still in her hand. "I'm left with nothing. But I left my Ukraine on feet."

Ukraine’s top commander, on Sunday (Apr 28) said that its troops were forced to fall back to new positions west of three villages on the eastern front where Russia has recently ramped up attacks and concentrated significant forces on several locations.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a fresh plea calling on the international community to deliver more air defences, begin talks for Ukraine to become a part of the European Union, and for the war-torn country to join NATO.

‘Most difficult’

In a statement on Sunday, Ukraine’s Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi addressed the worsening situation of Kyiv’s forces on the country’s eastern front and also expressed hope that it can stabilise it once the United States delivers more weapons as a part of its $61 billion aid package approved this week.

“The situation at the front has worsened,” said Syrskyi, in a post on Telegram. He described west of the occupied Ukrainian city Maryinka and northwest of Avdiivka, a town captured by the Russian forces after months of intense fighting in February, as “most difficult” areas.

Ukrainian troops have now taken a new position in the west of the villages of Berdychi and Semenivka, both of which are north of Avdiivka, and Novomykhailivka.

He noted that while Russian forces have generally “achieved certain tactical successes in these areas,” they could not “gain operational advantages.”

In a possibly concerning development, Syrskiy also said that the Ukrainian forces are also closely monitoring a build-up of Russian troops near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

Moscow claims to have captured village

Ukraine’s top commander in his statement did not respond to Russia’s claims about Novobakhmutivka, another village near Berdychi, which the Russian defence ministry on Sunday, said its forces have captured.

“As the result of active operations, the ‘Centrer’ troop unit liberated the village of Novobakhmutivka in the Donetsk People’s Republic,” said the ministry in its daily briefing.

The village is around 10 kilometres north of Avdiivka, the town which witnessed one of the bloodiest battles of the two-year conflict.

In his nightly address on Sunday, the Ukrainian president also called for more air defence systems, particularly the Patriot system.

Zelensky also said that he had spoken to US House Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries and thanked Congress for passing the $61 billion aid package.

“We are still waiting for the supplies Ukraine was promised,” said the Ukrainian president, adding that Kyiv is “expecting those volumes and scope that can change the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine’s interests.”

Zelensky also said that Ukraine has met all the conditions set by the EU to begin the accession talks and now the 27-nation bloc “must meet its obligations.”

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Ukraine has received strong backing from the European nations to join the bloc, but the process could take years.

United States (US) Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who recently concluded his three-day visit to China, raised concerns about China's support to Russian military.

United States (US) Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who recently concluded his three-day visit to China, raised concerns about China's support to Russian military. He raised this matter during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday (Apr 26), news agency Reuters reported. "I reiterated our serious concern about the PRC (People's Republic of China) providing components that are powering Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine," Blinken said during a press conference at the end of his China visit. However, the US Secretary of State did not respond to a question on whether Washington would impose sanctions on China's support for Russia, reported the news agency. “China has demonstrated in the past when it comes to Russia and Ukraine, that it can take positive action. You'll recall that while over a year ago we had concerns that Russia was considering the possible use of a nuclear weapon, and I believe that China's voice was important at least at that time, in moving Russia away from that possible course of action,” Blinken added. During China visit, Blinken meets Xi Antony Blinken embarked on a three-day visit to China on Wednesday, to meet President Xi Jinping and other top Chinese officials. During the meeting (with Blinken), Xi said that China and US should be partners and not rivals. With China-US increasing dialogue, managing differences and promoting cooperation, is not only the general aspiration of the two peoples (something the people of both countries want to see), but also what the rest of the world anticipates. I have said many times, that the world is big enough to accommodate both the US and Chinese development. China is happy to see a self-confident, open, prosperous and developing United States," the further said. Blinken, meanwhile, said, "President Biden asked me to return here to follow up on the important agenda that will set deeper cooperation as well as to manage responsibly the differences that we have. I think we’ve seen progress in various cooperation, particularly in military-to-military communication, counter-narcotics, the future of artificial intelligence, and we will keep on strengthening our people-to-people ties." Blinken also pointed out that the US and China should deal responsibly with "our differences so we avoid any miscommunication, any misconceptions, any miscalculations." Russia has detained Sergei Mingazov, a journalist for the Russian edition of Forbes magazine for allegedly spreading “fake news” about the Russian army, said the United States-based magazine and his lawyer, on Friday (Apr 26).

What we know about the journalist’s detention

Mingazov was detained and is being “held in a temporary detention center” in the Far Eastern Khabarovsk region for “reposting about the events in Bucha” on Telegram, said lawyer Konstantin Bubon in a post on Facebook, referring to a Kyiv suburb.

If convicted, Mingazov faces 10 years in prison on the charges of spreading “false information,” said his lawyer. He added, “In short, for reposting a publication about the events in Bucha.”

There has been no contact with the journalist, said Russia’s Forbes magazine on its website.

The recent detention took place under a law which was passed shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 which prescribes long jail sentences for people convicted of deliberately spreading false news about the Russian armed forces.

Rights groups have reported that hundreds of Russians have been arrested, fined and/or jailed for criticising what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine due to its tough military censorship laws.

Posts about alleged Russian war crimes in Bucha

According to Mingazov’s lawyer, he was detained for reposting articles about alleged Russian war crimes in Bucha, a suburb near the Ukrainian capital.

Russian officials have reportedly targeted people for their comments on Bucha, where Moscow’s troops have been accused of massacring Ukrainian civilians in the first weeks of the war, according to reports by several news organisations.

However, the Kremlin denied its troops had executed people saying there had been a “monstrous forgery”. It also went on to accuse the West of staging the scenes of dead civilians and testimonies of torture.

The Forbes Russia journalist’s Telegram page, which has around 430 followers, features a number of reposts from April 2022 that allege Russian troops killed civilians in Bucha, but it was not clear which of them was the reason for detaining him.

Russian troops reportedly controlled the Kyiv suburb for a month at the beginning of Moscow’s “special military operation”. The disturbing images of dead civilians found on the streets made headlines across the world and sparked outrage.

If convicted, Mingazov faces 10 years in prison on the charges of spreading “false information,” said his lawyer. He added, “In short, for reposting a publication about the events in Bucha.” There has been no contact with the journalist, said Russia’s Forbes magazine on its website. Rights groups have reported that hundreds of Russians have been arrested, fined and/or jailed for criticising what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine due to its tough military censorship laws. Posts about alleged Russian war crimes in Bucha According to Mingazov’s lawyer, he was detained for reposting articles about alleged Russian war crimes in Bucha, a suburb near the Ukrainian capital. Russian opposition politician, Ilya Yashin, is currently serving 8.5 years in jail on similar charges after he discussed alleged Russian war crimes in Bucha in a YouTube video. Russia and Ukraine have agreed in a Qatari-brokered deal to exchange almost 50 children displaced by Moscow's invasion, the Kremlin's children's rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova announced in Doha Wednesday.

Moscow has been accused of forcibly taking Ukrainian children into Russian territory during its full-scale offensive, with Lvova-Belova wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges related to those allegations.

"For the first time in a face-to-face format, we held talks with the Ukrainian side. Twenty-nine children are due to go to Ukraine and 19 to Russia," Lvova-Belova announced.

She gave no details on why the children were in Russian hands or where they had come from.

Ukraine believes Russia has illegally taken more than 19,000 of its children since the start of the 2022 invasion, of which fewer than 400 have been returned.

Moscow denies that charge, saying that it has transferred children for their safety away from fighting zones.

The fate of the children has been highly sensitive in Ukraine since the war began two years ago.

Some of the children's parents were killed, while others were separated from carers by the fast-moving front lines at the start of the invasion.

Some were living in Ukrainian orphanages in areas Russia then occupied.

Ukraine says Moscow's forces illegally deported them to Russia, and accuses the Russian authorities of trying to wipe out their Ukrainian identity.

Teenagers that returned to Ukraine have said they were subjected to Russian patriotic education and made to praise the Russian army.
