Rassie Erasmus can dream of an unprecedented &nbsp;third successive Rugby World Cup title after signing a four-year contract as South Africa head coach on Tuesday which includes the 2027 global showpiece in Australia.

The 51-year-old has returned to the head coach role he filled when the Springboks beat England in the 2019 final before moving up to director of rugby for the 2023 triumph over New Zealand last October.

"The main difference between the last four years and this season is that I will be more hands-on at the field sessions," Erasmus said in a statement issued by SA Rugby.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"In my role as director of rugby I continued to oversee the team structures and strategy in conjunction with Jacques (Nienaber the head coach at the 2023 RWC) and the other coaches, so it should be an easy transition into the head coach role."

The position of director of rugby has been discontinued pending a restructuring at SA Rugby.

Erasmus added he had&nbsp;already held his first 'coaching session' while recovering in hospital after suffering chemical burns in a recent accident at home.

He was discharged from hospital last week. &nbsp;

Erasmus, who stepped back into his old post when Nienaber left after the World Cup for powerhouse Irish province Leinster, will be backed up by a high-profile team of assistants.

Erasmus will be reunited with former Ireland&nbsp;hooker Jerry Flannery as defence coach -- he was in charge of the scrum at Irish province Munster during Erasmus's tenure from 2016-2017.

Former All Black fly-half Tony Brown will be the attack coach.

The 63-year-old Australian, whose mother and wife are Japanese, has been linked with the Japan head coach job since Australian media reported he had interviewed for it a couple of days before the Wallabies' final World Cup warm-up.

In his first public appearance since returning to Australia, Jones said he had not spoken to "anyone" about the Japan role and had no idea where the reports had come from. "I’ve always been committed to Australian rugby and I want to leave it in a better place, and that’s still the job," he told reporters in Sydney.

After being sacked by England last December, Jones returned home in January on a five-year deal, his second stint as Australia coach after leading the Wallabies to the 2003 World Cup final in the first. Jones immediately said Australia would claim a third World Cup triumph in France, an assertion that looked laughable after the Wallabies lost all five of their test matches in the run-up to the tournament.

With Rugby Australia to conduct a review of the World Cup, the coach conceded his future was not entirely in his hands. "It’s not absolutely my decision, is it? We’ve got a review going forward and we’ll see what happens at the end of the review,” he said.

His inexperienced Wallabies squad exited the World Cup in France after a campaign that included back-to-back losses to Fiji and Wales.

Jones stood by his decision to go with youth and leave behind seasoned campaigners like Quade Cooper and Michael Hooper. "I think we have left Australian rugby in a better position,” he said. "I came into the Wallabies (with) short preparation time, I had to make a quick decision on what we do. "I made a decision we’ve got to go with youth. That’s the best (decision) for Australia moving forward, and I still think I made the right decision there.

Rugby Australia's long-term appointment of Jones was made with the home 2027 World Cup in mind, and the governing body has kicked off a reform process to better align state federations in service to national teams.

Jones said the "system" needed to be fixed to ensure future success for the Wallabies. "(We need) everyone working together form the grassroots with little kids down at Randwick, all the way to Super Rugby teams and Wallabies teams where we all work together to put together the most powerful rugby national team we can put together,” he added.

"If we can do that now then we’ve got a rosy future because we’ve got great support here and we need to generate more support with better results."

Italy suffered a 96-17 loss to New Zealand in their last Rugby World Cup game but the dream of reaching the knockout stages is still alive against more familiar opposition, number eight Lorenzo Cannone said.

After winning their opening two fixtures with Namibia and Uruguay, Italy's campaign fell apart against the All Blacks on a disastrous night in Lyon.

"I think as a young, inexperienced squad we felt the pressure, and we probably just didn't deal with that," Cannone told Reuters. "There was a fear of making mistakes, of not starting the game on the right foot, and we made a lot of individual errors."

After such a resounding defeat, the players were almost at a loss for words after the game, but Cannone says they managed to move on quickly.

Cannone, 22, has started all of Italy's World Cup games in France, having also played in every Six Nations game this year.

One of his proudest moments was playing alongside his older brother Niccolo in Italy's 28-27 win over Australia in November 2022, in their native city of Florence.

The siblings also started together in the recent World Cup win over Uruguay and both have now been selected to play in the crunch clash with France.

"Playing at the World Cup with my brother is beautiful, already before that, playing alongside him on my debut was amazing, but getting here to the World Cup together has been, let's say, the cherry on top," he added.

France defeated New Zealand in their opening game, which may not augur well for Italy's chances after what the All Blacks then did to the Azzurri, but France are a more familiar opponent.

"They're a team we know well, when we met in the Six Nations this year there was just a five point gap between the sides, so definitely, we know, that this is not an entirely impossible task," he said.

"Against France it's always a physical battle but we're prepared for that. They're excellent in the turnover and counter-attacks and very strong in the scrum. We need to stop their forwards."

Italy have an exciting side which had impressed many before the performance against New Zealand, but one bad result and whatever happens against France won't change their outlook.

There is also a desire to do well in what could be coach Kieran Crowley's last game in charge, as he leaves the role after the World Cup.

"I see a really bright future for us. We have a lot of young, exciting players, who really want to show what they can do and they have a lot of desire," he said. "This will obviously be a very important game for Kieran, and all of the players want to do well, and a win or a good performance against France would be the perfect gift."

Italy take on France in Lyon on Friday, where a win for Cannone's side would most likely see them reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time.

Unlike with New Zealand, history is not completely against Italy in their meetings with France, having already defeated them twice in the Six Nations, the last win coming in 2013.

A decade later, and as Cannone said, it is not an impossible task.

Whoever claims victory will join England from Pool D in the last eight, where they will in all likelihood play Wales or Fiji.

Argentina head coach Michael Cheika said his side faced a stern challenge against the Japanese.

"They are a great team, they are quarter-finalists from the last World Cup and we're not, so we're very hungry to be in that position," he said.

Cheika made 11 changes from last Friday's crucial win over Samoa to face the lowest-ranked side in the competition.

There was a fervent atmosphere at the sun-kissed Stade de la Beaujoire, filled with South Americans from both sides of the Andes, for a first game between two countries from the continent at a World Cup.

Los Pumas crossed the 50-point mark in the closing two minutes as Ignacio Ruiz and Sanchez's stand-in Santiago Carreras scored.

They will hope there is no repeat of the sole previous World Cup meeting between the two sides, when Jake White's South Africa had to roll out the big guns from the bench to ensure a 30-25 pool victory in 2007 -- before going on to clinch the Webb Ellis Cup.

"We’ve got certain things that we have to rectify that we couldn’t get right against Ireland," said South Africa coach Jacques Nienaber, with goalkickers Manie Libbok and Faf de Klerk both misfiring against the Irish.

"In terms of our game plan, there are definitely some things that we will try a little bit differently in this game to see if it works.

"The result is very important but we need to fix that if we do get the opportunity to go into a quarter-final or knockout rugby. If we don’t fix those things we probably won’t last long in this competition."

Pollard, back from injury and called up to the World Cup squad just last week, booted 22 points as the Springboks beat England 32-12 in the final of the World Cup four years ago.

He is one of 12 changes to the starting team that went down to Ireland.

Flanker Siya Kolisi, who will make his 50th appearance as captain, Eben Etzebeth and Jasper Wiese are retained for the must-win clash that will be crucial in determining which two teams from Pool B advance to the quarter-finals, and who they will play in the top-eight playoffs.

"My expectations for myself is just going to be to express myself and enjoy it knowing that it’s not going to be perfect," said Pollard, with just 30 minutes under his belt in his comeback from a debilitating calf injury.

Tonga coach Toutai Kefu said matches against the likes of South Africa "are the games that get me out of bed".

"You always want to test yourself against the best in the world. We’ve done that regularly so far and we’ve enjoyed the occasion."

Kefu, who won the 1999 World Cup with Australia, added: "I suppose from a results point of view, it's been disappointing so far.

"It's certainly not the way we looked at it to turn out, 60 points by Ireland (a 59-16 defeat) and then 40-odd points by Scotland (45-17)."

Kefu has made three changes to the starting lineup, Semisi Paea starting at No 8 in place of the suspended Vaea Fifita.

Anzelo Tuitavuki will make his World Cup debut on the left wing, with Fine Inisi starting on the right in the two other changes.

Former All Blacks Charles Piutau, Malakai Fekitoa and Augustine Pulu all start while former Wallaby forward Adam Coleman is named on the bench.

Tonga wrap up their World Cup campaign against Romania in Lille on October 8.

"They are big fellas aren’t they? They got on top of us at times and we had to really keep at it for the whole game," he added.

"The commitment was certainly there but there were one or two things to work on for next week."

Vilaseca believes his team's success is also due to their participation in the Super&nbsp;Rugby&nbsp;Americas, a professional club competition won by Uruguay's Penarol in 2022 and 2023,

"The Super&nbsp;Rugby&nbsp;competition helped a lot.&nbsp;Rugby&nbsp;in South America changed a lot from 2020," said Vilaseca. "We now have a lot of professional players, we have a first- class stadium. It certainly helped us to play here at the level we have. There's no doubt about it, that is the solution to closing the gap for the tier two nations."

Rugby World Cup: Fearless Italy prepared for All Blacks to ‘bully’ them

Scotland's Stuart McInally said his "rugby story is over" after a neck injury prevented the hooker from winning a 50th cap and ended his hopes of bidding a glorious farewell to the sport on the pitch at the World Cup. The former skipper was cut from Gregor Townsend's final squad for the tournament in August, but an injury to Dave Cherry at the team hotel saw the forward drafted in to join the squad in France.

McInally, who had said earlier in the year he would retire from rugby in November to become an airline pilot, then suffered an injury in training last week and had to withdraw from the squad without playing a game and adding to his 49 caps. The 33-year-old said on social media that he had enjoyed the time of his life playing for Scotland in a career that had seen the usual highs and lows of a professional athlete.

"On reflection, the good times have, overwhelmingly, outweighed the struggles, and I wouldn’t change my journey," he added. "It was a privilege to end my career being part of the 2023 Scotland Rugby World Cup squad and, for now, my rugby story is over. It's time to start the next one."

He's a special player."

Scotland are third in Pool B at the World Cup after losing to South Africa in their opener and beating Tonga on Sunday. They face Romania and Ireland in their final two group games.
