Fly-half Owen Farrell will captain England against Chile on his return from a ban for this weekend's Rugby World Cup pool game, the Rugby Football Union announced on Thursday.

Farrell, 31, who has been banned since last month's warm-up victory over Wales, is one of 12 changes head coach Steve Borthwick has made for Saturday's game in Lille as England seek a third Pool D win in a row.

Saracens playmaker Farrell replaces the in-form George Ford for unbeaten England with Marcus Smith starting at full-back.

"One of the many great things about the Rugby World Cup is that the tournament provides an excellent opportunity to play against teams that we rarely have a chance to see," Borthwick said in a statement.

"It is for that reason that we are particularly looking forward to testing ourselves against Chile on Saturday.

"Having watched our next opponent closely, we know that we will have to prepare and play well against a committed Chile team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"As we head to the next round, it is only right that I once again pay tribute to our excellent supporters who I know will be right behind us in Lille this weekend," the former England skipper added.

It will be the first time in his career that Harlequins' Smith, 24, has started at full-back for either club or country.

Elliot Daly moves to centre from the No. 15 shirt, Lewis Ludlam is now at No. 8 and tight-head prop Kyle Sinckler are the three players to keep their spot.

Ford is named on the bench along with four fellow starters -- prop Joe Marler, lock Ollie Chessum, back-rower Ben Earl and centre Joe Marchant -- from last Sunday's victory over Japan.

England end their group campaign by facing Samoa in Lille on October 7.

It was all going horribly wrong for Italy as they trailed Uruguay by 10 points at the break in their&nbsp;Rugby&nbsp;World Cup Pool A encounter on Wednesday but a halftime reckoning got them back on track before they powered to a 38-17 victory. A penalty try and yellow cards for Niccolo Cannone and Danilo Fischetti left Italy chasing the game and the interval brought about a change in their approach.

"We got back into the changing room and we said we screwed it up and we handled it, just embraced the challenge," captain Michele Lamaro said. "I think we stepped back into the field with confidence, you know, stick together every single moment, win the little battles to win the final war."

Coach Kieran Crowley was disappointed with Italy's poor discipline but praised his defence for holding out. "You can't afford two players off the field. One of them was just ill-discipline, the second one you could argue but the referee made the decision so no problem," Crowley said. "But you know, we’ve got to be better than that because you're going to give away points.

"It was a hell of an effort from them because we only gave away seven points with 13 players so you know that defence was pretty good."

Two wins from their opening two games, along with two bonus points set Italy up nicely for their remaining fixtures with New Zealand and France. "I think we've got 10 points, if you asked me before to have 10 points after two games I would have taken it," Lamaro said. "It's unbelievable the energy this group has, the way we are together, the way we live together. It's something unbelievable."

Lamaro, who scored the first try after the break to begin the comeback, also had plenty of praise for Italy's opponents. "I told all the Uruguayan guys they can be proud of their performance, they put us under a lot of pressure but in these moments, what counts the most is how strong is the team and in the second half we showed that and smashed everything we could. "This is a real group, we're a family. It was a really tough game."

Italy now have time to recover before they take on New Zealand on Sept. 29. For now, the Azzurri and their 25-year-old captain will enjoy what they have already achieved. "It's unbelievable. I am young but without all these players, I couldn't do anything. I'm really proud of the boys and I'll share this moment for the rest of my life with them."

The Springboks have raised eye-brows by selecting seven forwards among their replacements to give them an 80-minute game with physicality, breakdown pressure and ruck speed. Rugby&nbsp;World Cup organisers apologised to the thousands of fans who were stuck outside the Marseille stadium and those who struggled to make their way to the Bordeaux arena, and promised to address the concerns over the national anthems on Wednesday. The World Cup pool D match between England and Argentina in Marseille got underway on Saturday to hundreds of empty seats as supporters were queuing outside while in Bordeaux tramway problems delayed fans arrival for the Ireland v Namibia game.

"We apologise to the fans who missed kickoff. It was our responsibility," France 2023 president Jacques Rivoal told a press conference. "We are very confident in our capacity in our capacity and in the capacity of the organising committee to address these challenges and find de relevant solutions," tournament director Michel Pousseau said. 
 
"We will never be complacent. Our ambition is to deliver the best for our fans. I want to acknowledge the frustration of our fans who could not make their way on time to the stadiums in Bordeaux and Marseille."

England flanker Tom Curry was on Tuesday banned for two matches following his red card in last weekend's 27-10 Rugby World Cup victory over Argentina.

The 25-year-old was sent off just three minutes into the Pool D encounter in Marseille on Saturday for a head-on-head tackle.

"The player accepted that foul play occurred and that the offence warranted a red card" the sport's governing body World Rugby said in a statement.

An independent disciplinary committee said the offence carries a minimum six-game suspension but found mitigating circumstances, including "an exemplary disciplinary record, apology to the player and good character", which warranted a 50 percent reduction in the sanction.

That would have meant a three-game ban but World Rugby said Curry was able to reduce that to two matches by applying to take part in the body's Coaching Intervention Programme aimed at modifying tackle technique.

It means he will miss England's next two Pool D matches against Japan in Nice on Sunday and minnows Chile in Lille on September 23.

He will be available again to face Samoa in Lille on October 7.

Around 2.5 million rugby fans are expected to attend World Cup fixtures across nine venues in France, including 600,000 from abroad.

Asked about the danger of terrorism, Darmanin said there was "no particular threat for the Rugby World Cup, and even less for the opening match".
