US presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy calls for GOP support against Trump’s likely indictment

Prosecutors have signaled to trump that he could face criminal charges relating to his alleged role in hush money payments to porn star stormy Daniels. As per the New York Times, Trump was told he could appear before a Manhattan grand jury next week; if he wished to testify. Stormy Daniels says that she had an affair with trump. She claims trump gave her $130,000 before the 2016 election to not discuss the encounter. Trump has maintained that nothing of the sort ever happened, and in 2018, told reporters he knows nothing about any payment made. A grand jury is hearing evidence and criminal charges may follow. A lawyer for trump confirmed to Reuters that Trump had been invited to testify. If Trump is charged, it would mark the first-ever indictment of a former U.S. President. Trump is seeking the Republican nomination for the 2024 election. Trump has been citing a political witch-hunt. He says it is an attempt to take down the leading candidate in the republican party.

The world is moving towards fossil fuel-free and environmental-friendly ways of transportation by pushing towards electric vehicles. At a time like this, the US State of Wyoming resolution wants to ban the sale of new electric vehicles by 2035. A group of Republican legislators presented a joint resolution expressing support for phasing out the sale of EVs in the next 12 years. What are the reasons behind the move? Is it in favour of the state? What is the history of Wyoming which impacts the decision taken by Republicans?

Reason to ban electric vehicles in Wyoming?

One of the reasons cited by the Republicans for supporting the ban on EV vehicle sales was the proud and cherished history of oil and gas production in Wyoming. According to the proposal, since its invention, the gas-powered vehicle has enabled the state's industries and businesses to engage in commerce and transport goods and resources more efficiently throughout the country. The proposal also cited a lack of existing EV charging infrastructure and not easily recyclable or disposable batteries as grounds for a ban.

Employment generated by Wyoming's oil and gas industry

According to the Wyoming bill, the United States has consistently invested in the oil and gas industry to sustain gas-powered vehicles and that investment has resulted in the continued employment of thousands of people in the oil and gas industry in Wyoming and throughout the country. "Fossil fuels, including oil and petroleum products, will continue to be vital for transporting goods and people across Wyoming and the United States for years to come," the proposal added.

Legislators say Wyoming economy to have detrimental impact

According to the lawmakers' the proliferation of electric vehicles at the expense of gas-powered vehicles will have deleterious impacts on Wyoming's communities and will be detrimental to Wyoming's economy and the ability for the country to efficiently engage in commerce.

How will Wyoming resolution become a law to ban EV vehicles?

In order for the resolution to become a law, the joint resolution must now move through the state government for approval.

Wyoming Republicans backing the proposal

The resolution is backed by state senators Jim Anderson, Dan Dockstader, Brian Boner and Ed Cooper. Additionally, this resolution also has the backing of US representatives Donald Burkhart Jr. and Bill Henderson.

California and New York ban on gas, and diesel vehicle sales

State restrictions on the purchase of new gas and diesel vehicles have recently been declared in states like California and New York. Furthermore, in order to make up for lost gas tax income as more drivers transition to electric vehicles, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee recommended a $200 increase in the registration price for EVs. At least 31 more states also charge emissions-free drivers an additional fee, ranging from $50 to more than $200.

Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida emerged as an alternative for conservative holdouts who are refusing to back Kevin McCarthy's quest for House speaker as Republicans battled for a second day to elect a speaker. In the three rounds of voting that took place on Wednesday (4 January), Donalds received 20 votes to McCarthy's 201, preventing McCarthy from receiving the 218 votes necessary to be elected speaker of the full House. Republicans opposed to McCarthy nominated a broad selection of candidates on Tuesday, including former New York representative Lee Zeldin and representatives Andy Biggs of Arizona and Jim Jordan of Ohio. Donalds switched his vote from McCarthy to Jordan on Tuesday's final vote, siding with the rebel Republicans.

Byron Donalds: Early days

Donalds, 44, was chosen to serve Florida's 19th District, in the state's southwest, for a second term in November. To succeed retiring Republican Rep. Francis Rooney, Donalds won a nine-way GOP (another way of referring to the Republican party) primary and defeated his Democratic challenger in his first election in 2020.

A Brooklyn native who graduated from Florida State University in 2002, he was brought up by a single mother. He was working as a financial adviser when then-Gov. Rick Scott named him to the board of trustees of a public college, raising his ranks in Florida's GOP circles. Erika Donalds, his wife, is a supporter of the state's school choice movement.

Donalds acknowledged being detained as a young man on a marijuana distribution allegation that was subsequently dropped, and he claimed to have reformed his life after that episode. In 2012, he campaigned unsuccessfully for the US House; four years later, he was elected to the Georgia House.

House speaker votes

Donalds told CBS in December 2021 that McCarthy had "done tremendous things" for House Republicans. “So right now, the question is, who’s going to be the person that’s going to take us to the next level?” Donalds said. “Kevin’s proven he can do that.”

Donalds supported McCarthy in the first two rounds of voting on Tuesday before backing Jordan in the third. Donalds tweeted as a result, saying, “reality is … McCarthy doesn’t have the votes.”

“This will take time, Democracy is messy at times, but we will be ready to govern on behalf of the American people,” Donalds added. “Debate is healthy.”

Donalds cast votes in favour of himself on Wednesday when his name was put up for nomination. After one of those votes, Donalds appeared on Fox to advocate for leadership that “actually reflects where the American people are, and that leadership is something that is earned here in the nation’s Capitol, not just given.”

What do other representatives think of Byron Donalds?

On Tuesday, only one member—Rep. Chip Roy of Texas—voted in favour of Donalds for speaker before switching to Jordan. Roy stated in his address on Wednesday presenting Donalds that the sophomore stood for a change for both Washington and the Republican Party.

“Here we are, and for the first time in history, there have been two Black Americans placed into the nomination for speaker of the House,” Roy said, referring to Donalds and Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries. “This country needs a change. This country needs leadership that does not reflect this city, this town that is badly broken.”

Byron Donalds: Early days Donalds, 44, was chosen to serve Florida's 19th District, in the state's southwest, for a second term in November. Donalds tweeted as a result, saying, “reality is … McCarthy doesn’t have the votes.” “This will take time, Democracy is messy at times, but we will be ready to govern on behalf of the American people,” Donalds added. “Debate is healthy.” Also watch | Mexico sends 200 military personnel to the U.S. border city of Juarez Donalds cast votes in favour of himself on Wednesday when his name was put up for nomination. This country needs leadership that does not reflect this city, this town that is badly broken.” There are now only four Black Republicans in the House, including Donalds. Who is Byron Donalds? The latest Republican nominee for House speaker pitted against Kevin McCarthy

Republican Party took control of the lower chamber by winning elections held in November. However, Republican Kevin McCarthy encountered a rebellion within his ranks to become the US House Speaker. The California congressman lost the first round and now it's uncertain how he may succeed when the House reconvenes on Wednesday. They will keep voting until a majority is reached.

Who is Kevin McCarthy?

McCarthy advanced from California state politics to become the head of the Republican House conference, the party's caucus in the House of Representatives for Republicans. His success is more attributable to his ability to develop relationships than it is to his policy recommendations. He also played a crucial role in the 2010 midterm elections. Republican leader McCarthy is a native of Bakersfield, California. He started out on the side as a staffer for then-Rep. Bill Thomas before chairing the California Young Republicans and later the Young Republican National Federation.

Ultimately, he won a seat in the California state Assembly in 2002, and in 2003 he was appointed GOP floor leader. According to his biography, McCarthy concentrated on economic matters throughout his time in the state assembly, such as cutting the state budget and reforming the state workers' compensation programme. After Thomas, his former boss, retired, McCarthy went on to be elected to the House in 2007 to fill the vacancy.

Last of the Young guns in US Congress

McCarthy was referred to be one of the "young guns," the future generation of conservative leadership, along with former representatives Eric Cantor, R-Va., and Paul Ryan, R-Wis. The group wrote a book with the same title in 2010 to lay out a new course for the Republican Party. They supported budget cutbacks and reduced governmental size in an effort to change Washington. McCarthy is currently the only member of the trio in Congress.

Kevin McCarthy's speakership ambitions

McCarthy's journey hasn't always been easy, however; in late 2015, amid opposition from the same type of conservatives who vow they will obstruct him on Tuesday during the speaker vote, his speakership aspirations abruptly ended. Seven years ago, after failing to secure the speakership, McCarthy concentrated on winning over his populist critics and winning over Donald Trump.

Ties with Trump

Despite officially supporting McCarthy's bid for the gavel this time around, the former president hailed McCarthy's withdrawal from the contest for House speaker in 2015 when McCarthy discovered his support within the conference was only around 75% of what was required. Following the 6 January capitol attack relationship between Trump and McCarthy got soar for a while. However, McCarthy visited Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida less than a month after the Capitol attack to talk about his plans to take back the House in 2022.

What if McCarthy is elected as US House Speaker?

If elected speaker, McCarthy would be second in line for the president. McCarthy would also have a say in legislation that governs the Pentagon, federal agencies, and other institutions. But if he becomes speaker, he will still need to mediate conflicts within his party, since each group would see an increase in power in a chamber that is sharply split.

Former United States President Donald Trump has already announced his intention to run for the office once again in 2024 but he may not have an easy road ahead of him. According to the latest poll conducted by USA Today and Suffolk University, Trump is not the favourite to win the Republican Party primaries and is trailing Florida governor Ron DeSantis by almost 23 points.

DeSantis has gained a lot of political mileage after a resounding victory in the midterm elections but the situation was not similar for Trump. With the Republicans losing the Senate race once again, a lot of blame was put on the former President as several of his endorsements failed to win.
