3rd Test: Axar Patel to replace suspended Ravindra Jadeja against Lanka

In a major blow to Team India, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was on Sunday suspended for the third and the final Test against Sri Lanka after accumulating six demerit points over a 24 month period.

During the third day&#39;s play in the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/cricket/india-wins-second-test-against-sri-lanka-takes-2-0-lead-18647" target="_blank">Colombo Test against Sri Lanka on Saturday</a>, Jadeja was found guilty of breaching ICC Code of Conduct which relates to &quot;throwing a ball&quot; in a &quot;dangerous manner&quot; during an International Match.

Saturday&#39;s incident happened on the final delivery of the 58th over when Jadeja, after fielding off his own bowling, threw the ball back at the batsman who had not left his crease. The on-field umpires deemed the throwing &quot;in a dangerous manner&quot; as it narrowly missed Dimuth Karunaratne.

The left-handed, who had received a 50 per cent fine and three demerit points during the Indore Test against New Zealand in October 2016 for violating the code, with the addition of Saturday&#39;s three demerit points, reached the threshold of four demerit points.

As a result, the 28-year-old has been suspended from the Pallekele Test beginning August 12.

India registered a comprehensive win against Sri Lanka in the Colombo Test and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers as he scalped yet another five-wicket ball.

The left-hander was adjudged Man of the Match for his match figures of 7-236 in 61 overs apart from unbeaten 70 with the bat in the first innings.

India&#39;s cricket team have been given a significant pay rise, with the world&#39;s richest cricket board (BCCI) announcing on Wednesday that it had doubled salaries for the 2016-17 season and hiked match fees across all three of the game&#39;s formats.

Players in the uppermost &#39;A&#39; category have been put on a retainer of 20 million Indian rupees ($305,000) for the period ending September 20, 2017, up from 10 million rupees last season.

That is still well short of the 700,000 pounds ($870,800) retainers that England&#39;s top cricketers, such as Alastair Cook or Joe Root are on, according to media reports, or the A$1.12 million dollars ($858,816) for Australia captain Steve Smith.

Top Indian cricketers also receive a match fee for each international appearance, and many benefit from playing in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL).

The BCCI said it had seven players on Grade A contracts, up from four last season, with Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja and Murali Vijay joining captain Virat Kohli, former skipper MS Dhoni, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and batsman Ajinkya Rahane.

Indian players on Grade B contracts, such as batsman Rohit Sharma and pace bowlers Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav will earn 10 million rupees each and Grade C players will earn 5 million rupees apiece.

Notable exceptions from the list of players awarded contracts include off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and left-handed batsman Suresh Raina.

Players also top up their income in the IPL Twenty20 competition, with the country&#39;s media reporting that skipper Kohli, who captains Royal Challengers Bangalore, earned 15 million rupees from the league last year.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes was bought for a staggering $2.17 million by Rising Pune Supergiants ahead of this season&#39;s IPL.&nbsp;

The BCCI also increased match fees for the national team, with players now earning 1.5 million rupees per test match, or three times as much as they did last season.

Match fees for both one-day internationals and Twenty20 internationals have been doubled, to 600,000 rupees and 300,000 rupees, respectively.

The changes have been backdated to October 1, 2016, the BCCI said.

The Saurashtra batsman has replaced New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who is now in fifth place, also slipping behind Joe Root and Virat Kohli, who remained static at fourth position. Top-ranked Australian captain Steve Smith has reached a career-high rating of 941 points after scores of 178 not out and 21.

While Jadeja has closed in on a major landmark as his tally of 899 rating points has put him on the brink of becoming only the second Indian bowler after Ashwin to touch the 900-point mark, Ashwin, who had a highest rating of 904 points, has slipped 37 points behind Jadeja to 862 points after finishing with just two wickets in Ranchi.

Meanwhile, the race for the second spot in the ICC Test team rankings has become interesting as Australia and South Africa compete ahead of the cut-off date of April 1, on which India is assured of finishing first and getting a cash award of USD 1 million.

Australia will finish second and get a cash award of USD 500,000 with at least a draw in the last Test in Dharamsala while South Africa can finish second if Australia loses with South Africa either winning or drawing the last match against New Zealand in Hamilton.

The third-placed team on April 1 will receive USD 200,000 while the fourth-placed team, which will be England, will get USD 100,000.

Jadeja is world's best Test bowler, Pujara second-best batsman

India mounted a positive reply after Steve Smith&#39;s unbeaten 178 and Glenn Maxwell&#39;s maiden century powered Australia to a series-high 451 on day two of the third test on Friday.

Lokesh Rahul made an elegant 67, his fourth half-century in five innings, before Pat Cummins dismissed him in the paceman&#39;s first Test after more than five years in the wilderness.

India were 120 for one at close, still 331 behind, with Murali Vijay unbeaten on 42 and Cheteshwar Pujara on 10.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who did not take the field since sustaining a shoulder injury in Thursday&#39;s second session, is expected to bat.

Earlier, lion-hearted left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja bowled the bulk of the overs to claim 5-124 and effected a spectacular run-out to wrap up Australia&#39;s first innings.

After Australia had resumed on 299-4, paceman Umesh Yadav broke Maxwell&#39;s bat in two with the very first delivery but could not really unsettle the batsman.

The normally swashbuckling Maxwell assiduously inched his way to become the second Australian cricketer after Shane Watson to score a century in all three formats.

After reaching his hundred with a fierce cut that flew through the slips for his ninth boundary, Maxwell looked quite overwhelmed by the achievement as he embraced Smith with a huge bear hug, took off his helmet and kissed the badge.

He added four more runs to his score before edging Jadeja to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha for 104. Maxwell also hit two sixes and faced 185 balls in his four-hour vigil, the longest he has spent at the crease in an international match.

Better known for his exploits in the shorter formats, the 28-year-old grasped his chance in his first Test outing in more than two years to build a series-high 191-run partnership with his skipper.

Smith, who crossed 5,000 Test runs in Australia&#39;s 800th Test, the first ever at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association Stadium, was in complete control at the other end.

His 19th test century, which contained 17 boundaries, is the highest score by an Australia captain in India, eclipsing predecessor Michael Clarke&#39;s 130 in Chennai four years ago.

Yadav admitted bowling to Smith was quite a challenge on a batting-friendly wicket.

&quot;Singles are coming easily and the outfield is so fast that you just need to place it in the gap and it would race to the boundary,&quot; he said.

The paceman also expected his team to benefit from the track.

&quot;It&#39;s a 100-run-a-session wicket. We also made 120 today. Plus minus 20-30 runs, but we&#39;ll try to get there.&quot;

Jadeja, who bowled more than a third of the overs in the Australia innings, kept India in the game, dismissing Matthew Wade for 37 and the scoreless Cummins in the same over.

Smith missed his double century when he sprinted for a risky second run and bowler Jadeja, his back to the stumps, collected a throw and flicked the ball onto the wickets to run out Josh Hazlewood.

Maxwell predicted Cummins would trouble India when the third day&#39;s play resumes.

&quot;He&#39;s a guy who can get that variable bounce with the way he digs the ball into the wicket,&quot; he said of his team mate.

&quot;Hopefully, he&#39;s extremely effective for us tomorrow. That extra pace is hard to adjust...&quot;

Ranchi Test: Murali Vijay, Pujara keep Australia at bay

Fighting half-centuries from Shaun Marsh and Matt Renshaw helped Australia secure a crucial first-innings lead over world number one India in the second Test in Bangalore on Sunday.

The visitors were 237 for six at stumps on the second day, leading India by 48 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Matthew Wade on 25 and Mitchell Starc on 14 were at the crease.

Marsh top-scored with a 197-ball 66 before Indian seamer Umesh Yadav lured him into a tired-looking shot that was caught at short midwicket just before close of play.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja claimed three wickets, including the key scalps of Australia skipper Steve Smith (8) and Renshaw (60) on a pitch that offered variable bounce.

Fast bowlers Ishant Sharma and Yadav, with a wicket each, unsettled the visiting batsmen but regular partnerships helped Australia surpass India&#39;s first-innings score of 189.

The visitors were faltering at the tea break on 163-5, but Marsh returned to score his sixth Test fifty while he and Wade put on 57 for the sixth wicket.

Marsh had his share of luck, surviving a few close calls against the Indian bowlers including nicking a Yadav delivery on 14 off the glove.

Earlier Renshaw, who started the day on 15, put on 52 runs with Marsh to keep the Indian attack temporarily at bay as runs came at a miserly rate of roughly two an over.

The left-handed opener, who had scored 68 in the first innings in Pune, looked ready to accelerate after hitting Jadeja for the first six of the match, but the bowler got his revenge two balls later.

Jadeja saw Renshaw emerge from his crease and fired the ball down the leg side as wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha completed the stumping in quick time.

Runs came at a trickle in the morning session, with the visitors scoring just 47 in 29 overs as two of their top batsmen Warner (33) and Smith were sent back to the pavilion.

Ashwin bowled Warner to get the opener for an eighth time in 12 Tests, while Smith battled hard for 52 deliveries before being caught by Saha off a wily Jadeja.

The morning was enlivened by banter between the lanky Sharma and Smith, who traded barbs as the day progressed.

The visitors lead the four-match series 1-0 after beating India in the first Test in Pune inside three days.

Marsh, Renshaw give Australia edge in 2nd Test

India beat Bangladesh by 208 runs to win the one-off Test at Hyderabad on the fifth and final day on Monday.

Set an unlikely victory target of 459, Bangladesh were dismissed for 250 shortly after the scheduled tea break.

India spin duo Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up four wickets each to take India to victory.

Bangladesh did show resistance, batting over 100 overs but scoreboard pressure coupled with concerted bowling by the Indians made their hard work go in vain.

Ashwin, who in his 45th Test had become the fastest bowler to claim 250 Test wickets on Sunday, trapped Taskin Ahmed lbw to complete the win as an umpire referral put India&#39;s celebrations on hold.

The lanky off-spinner got first innings centurion Mushfqur Rahim (23) in the morning session to dent Bangladesh&#39;s hopes of saving the match.

Earlier in the first session, Jadeja dismissed star batsman Shakib Al Hasan (22), who added just one run to his overnight score.

India spin duo Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up four wickets each to take India to victory.

Ashwin, who in his 45th Test had become the fastest bowler to claim 250 Test wickets on Sunday, trapped Taskin Ahmed lbw to complete the win as an umpire referral put India's celebrations on hold. The lanky off-spinner got first innings centurion Mushfqur Rahim (23) in the morning session to dent Bangladesh's hopes of saving the match. Earlier in the first session, Jadeja dismissed star batsman Shakib Al Hasan (22), who added just one run to his overnight score. Mahmudullah then put on fighting partnerships with Rahim and Sabbir Rahman to resist the Indian attack on what still seemed to be a decent batting track. India had bowled out Bangladesh for 388 in their second innings and decided to build on their 299-run lead after not enforcing the follow-on. Test cricket: India beat Bangladesh by 208 runs

Ravindra Jadeja ripped the heart out of England&#39;s batting order to bowl India to a thumping innings and 75-run victory in the fifth and final test on Tuesday.

The left-arm spinner claimed seven of the 10 English wickets that tumbled in the final two sessions as India completed an emphatic 4-0 series win.

The touring side needed to bat out the final day to secure a consolation draw and Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings defended resolutely through the morning to boost their chances.

Cook did look ill at ease against spin and got a life on four when he lunged forward to edge Ravichandran Ashwin but the ball popped out of wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel&#39;s gloves.

Jennings played more confidently although was nearly caught by Lokesh Rahul at short leg off Amit Mishra when on 31.

Jadeja returned after lunch to turn the match on its head.

The all-rounder has haunted Cook since the tourists landed in India and he dismissed the England captain for the sixth time in the series by getting him caught at leg slip.

It was a poor shot from Cook who edged a leg-side delivery to Rahul to depart for 49.

Jennings followed up his debut century in the previous test in Mumbai with a fifty but offered a tame return catch to Jadeja after making 54.

For once, England&#39;s batting mainstay Joe Root let down his team.

Root was hit on the pad by a fuller delivery from Jadeja and was probably relieved after India&#39;s lbw appeal was turned down.

Home captain Virat Kohli took his time before deciding to review the decision, which was overturned after replays suggested the ball would have hit the leg stump.

Jadeja then sprinted backwards to take a brilliant running catch to dismiss Jonny Bairstow off the bowling of paceman Ishant Sharma.

Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes looked determined to bat through but Jadeja removed both batsmen after tea to spark an English collapse.

Moeen was guilty of throwing his wicket away with a loose shot after making 44 and Stokes chipped a catch to mid-wicket to depart for 23.

Jadeja claimed the last two wickets to finish with a career-best 7-48 as England, 103 for no loss at lunch, folded barely half an hour before the scheduled close.

Cricket: India beat England by innings and 75 runs, win Test series 4-0

Ravindra Jadeja led India&#39;s strong lower-order batting display with a career-best 90 before spin partner Ravichandran Ashwin wrecked England&#39;s top order to put the hosts firmly in charge of the third test on Monday.

Jadeja fell agonisingly short of his maiden test century but shared 75-plus partnerships with Ashwin and Jayant Yadav to give India, who were all out for 417, a handy first-innings lead of 134 runs.

Ashwin struck three times in the final session as England, 1-0 down in the five-match series, slumped to 78-4 at the end of third day, still 56 runs behind.

Joe Root was unbeaten on 36 at the close with nightwatchman Gareth Batty on nought and the touring side face an uphill battle to save the match at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.

Resuming on 271-6, India needed four overs to erase the 12-run first-innings deficit before their lower order batsmen led them to a substantial lead.

Ben Stokes, who produced a lion-hearted effort with the ball to claim 5-73, earned a breakthrough when he dismissed Ashwin for 72, a composed knock including 11 fours.

The Ashwin-Jadeja stand was worth a match-high 97 runs and Jadeja went on to complete his third test fifty, celebrating with his trademark swirling of the bat, before accelerating and smacking four boundaries in one Chris Woakes over.

Aggression proved his downfall, however, as Jadeja stepped out to Adil Rashid and holed out in the deep to depart after an entertaining 170-ball knock that included 10 fours and a six.

Jadeja added 80 runs with Jayant, who made 55, his maiden test fifty.

England opener Haseeb Hameed was struggling with a finger injury sustained in the first innings and Root opened the innings with Alastair Cook.

Cook survived two reviews but could not capitalise, Ashwin pushing a delivery through the England captain&#39;s defence to bowl him for 12.

Moeen Ali chipped Ashwin to Jayant at mid-on, Jonny Bairstow fell caught behind to Jayant and Ashwin dismissed Ben Stokes for five to put India in a dominant position.
