Leaving everyone in a state of mourning, one of the longest-surviving Bengal tigers in India, died at the age of 25 years and 10 months on Monday.

After being injured by a crocodile in a territorial fight in the Sunderbans with over 10 injuries, Raja was brought to South Khairbari&nbsp;in 2008.

While their lifespan is approximately 12 to 13 years, Bengal tigers usually live up to 15 to 16 years in captivity.

But Raja defied all odds and lived over 25 years, making it only second to another tiger that lived 26 years in captivity.

According to Jaldapara wildlife divisional forest officer Dipak M, "The success story of Raja will always be remembered as one of the greatest and rarest examples of ex-situ conservation in the history of Directorate of Forests, West Bengal."

Paying homage to the braveheart, Dipak gathered at the centre with Surendra Kumar Meena, Alipurdar DM and other officers of the forest department said Raja died at around 3 AM in the early morning.

In the highest toll since it began compiling data a decade ago, India's tiger conservation body said 126 of the endangered big cats died in 2021.

Hunting and habitat loss have slashed the population to dangerously low levels even though India is home to around 75 per cent of the world's remaining tigers.

Sri Lanka lost its most sacred elephant at the age of 68, triggering an outpouring of grief and a presidential order for his remains to be preserved and stuffed “for future generations”.

On Monday, thousands of mourners gathered on the outskirts of Colombo to pay their last respects to Nadungamuwa Vijaya Raja, popularly known as Raja—considered to be the largest tamed elephant in Asia.

According to The Guardian, the sacred tusker was handed over to taxidermists later on Monday for stuffing after Buddhist funeral rites were performed.

Raja, born in the southern Indian city of Mysore in 1953, was one of two elephant calves gifted by the Mysore king to a Sri Lankan physician monk to thank him for curing one of king’s relatives of an illness.

As a young calf, he had been “chosen” among the elite elephants to carry the sacred Buddhist relics during an annual parade in Sri Lanka.

For over a decade, Raja’s carried&nbsp;the casket containing the holy tooth relic of Lord Buddha during the annual procession of Esala, an important religious pageant for the country’s Buddhist majority which takes place in July during the full moon in Kandy city.

Though not in consideration right now, choosing a successor to Nadungamuwa Raja is expected to be a lengthy process.

According to the tradition, only certain elephants with very specific physical traits can be selected for this holy role.&nbsp;The chosen elephant has to be from a particular caste with special physical characteristics to qualify.

President Gotabaya Rajapksa declared Raja to be a “national treasure” and said that after the Buddhist last rites had been performed on the elephant, his cadaver would be handed over to taxidermists who would stuff it for posterity. He will be given full state honours for his funeral.

A Delhi court released a man convicted of stalking a class XII student on probation for a year considering his poor financial status.

A man name Raja was convicted of stalking a girl for months whenever she used to go for her tuition. He constantly expressed his love to her and asked&nbsp;to marry him despite of her saying no.

After the girl lodged a complaint in 2017, Raja was charged under section 354D of the Indian Penal Code.&nbsp;

In 2016 the court awarded Raja six months of jail-term however he appealed against the decision citing his poor condition and past record.

The court after seeing a report from the probationary officer which stated Raja having a clean record and was never involved in any other case released him on probation on bond of Rs 20,000 and directed him to maintain good behaviour.

"Keeping in view the all facts and circumstances, without expressing any opinion on the merits of this case and considering his poor financial condition, it is considered expedient to release him on probation for a period of one year on furnishing probation bond of Rs 20,000 with one surety in the like amount to appear and receive sentence as and when called upon during such period and, in the meantime the appellant shall keep peace and be of good behaviour," news agency PTI quoted judge as saying.

The CBI today moved the Delhi High Court challenging a special court order acquitting former telecom minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case.

The matter was mentioned before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar by Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta.

The court allowed it to be listed for hearing tomorrow.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had yesterday moved the high court against acquittal of Raja, Kanimozhi and others in a money laundering case arising out of the 2G scam.

The special court had on December 21 last year acquitted Raja, Kanimozhi and others in the cases registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the ED.

Besides Raja and Kanimozhi, the special court had acquitted 17 others, including DMK supremo M Karunanidhi&#39;s wife Dayalu Ammal, Shahid Balwa and Vinod Goenka of STPL, Asif Balwa and Rajiv Aggarwal of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt. Ltd., film producer Karim Morani, P Amirtham and Director of Kalaignar TV Sharad Kumar in the ED case.

The ED, in its charge sheet, had alleged that Rs 200 crore was paid by Swan Telecom (P) Ltd (STPL) promoters to DMK-run Kalaignar TV.

On the same day, the trial court had acquitted Raja, Kanimozhi and 15 others, including former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja&#39;s erstwhile private secretary R K Chandolia, Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka, Unitech Ltd. MD Sanjay Chandra and three top executives of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RADAG) -- Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair, in the CBI&#39;s 2G case.

The CBI had alleged that there was a loss of Rs 30,984 crore to the exchequer in allocation of licences for 2G spectrum which were scrapped by the top court on February 2, 2012.

Special Judge O P Saini had held that the prosecution had &quot;miserably failed&quot; to prove the charges.

The special court, which was set up on March 14, 2011 for hearing 2G cases exclusively, had also acquitted Essar Group promoters Ravi Kant Ruia and Anshuman Ruia and six others in a separate case arising out of the 2G scam probe.

The first case, prosecuted by the CBI, had 17 accused, while the second matter, pursued by the ED, had 19 accused. The third one had eight accused including Essar promoters.

In the CBI case, Raja, Kanimozhi and 15 others were tried under provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act dealing with offences of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery, using as genuine fake documents, abusing official position, criminal misconduct by public servant and taking bribe.
