"You fought with love, truth and kindness in your heart. Those who could not see you, see you now, but some of us have always seen and known you to be the bravest of all. Bhai Rahul Gandhi, I am proud to be your sister," she added.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Rahul Gandhi’s resounding victory in Wayanad defies BJP’s predictions

As the Lok Sabha elections demonstrated unexpected results for the BJP, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at the saffron party stating that the people of India were not impressed by how Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah ran the country and that the mandate had gone against the Indian PM.

He further accused the Indian prime minister of capturing central probe agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

"We fought this election not just against BJP but also the institutions, the governance structure of the country, the intelligence agencies CBI & ED, judiciary because all these institutions were captured by Amit Shah & Narendra Modi ji," Gandhi said while addressing a press conference on Tuesday (June 4).

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that PM Modi would attack the Constitution and democracy in his term.

"People realised that if PM Modi gets another term, the next attack will be on the Constitution and democracy of the country. It is fortunate that the BJP won't succeed in their purpose now," Kharge said.

Will INDIA bloc try form government? Rahul Gandhi says will seek opinion of allies

Rahul Gandhi, a top leader of India's opposition Congress party, was asked by a Bengaluru court on Saturday (Jun 1) to appear before it on June 7 in a defamation case filed by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader.

The case revolves around Congress's corruption allegations against the previous BJP government in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

During the May 2023 state assembly elections, Congress had alleged that the BJP government in the state charged '40 per cent commission' for the execution of all public works. The party also accused the BJP of publishing a 'corruption rate card'.

Responding to the allegations, BJP MLC and Karnataka General Secretary Keshav Prasad filed a defamation case against Congress, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar of Karnataka.

Both Congress leaders appeared before the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Bengaluru on Saturday and were granted bail in the case.

Rahul summoned in another case

Earlier on May 30, another court in Pune asked Gandhi to appear before it in connection with a case filed by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar's grandnephew. In the official complaint, Gandhi was accused of defaming the Hindutva ideologue while delivering a speech in London in 2023.

He has been asked to appear in person before court on August 19.

The complaint says that Savarkar and his family experienced mental trauma as a result of Gandhi's deliberate and malicious accusations against them, which were meant to damage Savarkar's reputation. Even though the speech was given in England, the complaint argues that because it was widely published and circulated, Pune and India as a whole felt the impact of it.

The Lok Sabha elections are in full swing in India. In the next few days, the world's biggest democracy will have its new government. As per reports, PM Modi will travel to Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari and meditate at the famous Vivekananda Rock Memorial after the culmination of his Lok Sabha election campaign.

Dhyan aka meditation

As per reports, the PM will meditate day and night from May 30 evening to June 1, evening at the same place where Swami Vivekananda did meditation — the Dhyan Mandapam.

The rock where Modi will meditate also has huge significance, as it had a major impact on Swami Vivekananda's life.

Kanyakumari, as per ANI, is the place where Swami Vivekananda had a vision of Bharat Mata. It was there that Swami Vivekananda arrived after wandering across the country and mediated for three days — attaining a vision for a developed India.

Not only that, legend goes that the goddess Parvati also meditated at the same place on one foot as she waited for Lord Shiva.

In conversation with PTI, a BJP leader said, "Meditating at the same place shows Prime Minister Modi's commitment to bringing Swami ji's vision of a Viksit Bharat to life."

"Prime Minister Modi is giving a signal of national unity by going to Kanyakumari," added another leader, remarking that the visit also shows the PM's deep commitment and affection for Tamil Nadu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is known to undertake spiritual journeys at the end of election campaigns. In line with this, he will reach Kanyakumari on May 30 and stay there till June 1. Previously, after the 2019 election campaign, he had retreated to Kedarnath, and in 2014 he had visited Shivaji's Pratapgarh.

Yadav targets PM Modi for 'mujra' remark

Earlier today, the Samajwadi Party chief took a jibe at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his 'mujra' remark stating that the PM's speech was faltering because of his waning confidence.

"When the self-confidence is faltering, the speech also falters. There is a decrease in his confidence. And as a result, he is using such language," Yadav told reporters.

This came after PM Modi launched a scathing attack on the Opposition INDIA bloc on Saturday (May 25) stating that he will not let them snatch away the reservation benefits constitutionally accorded to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Communities (OBCs), even if they perform "mujra" (dance) before their purported vote bank.

"I am giving the guarantee to Bihar, SC/ST/OBC communities, till Modi is alive, I will not let them snatch away their rights. For Modi, the Constitution is supreme, for Modi, Babasaheb Ambedkar's sentiments are supreme... if the INDIA bloc wants to accept the servitude of their vote bank, they are free to do so...if they want to perform mujra (dance), they are free to do... PM Modi attacks Congress over 1984 riots, alleges it 'allowed massacre of Sikhs'

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday (May 25) released the constituency-wise voting data from the first five phases of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This comes amid a public discourse over the lack of official voter turnout data.

Coming out with the data, the ECI asserted that there was a pattern in the creation of false narratives, and that it was done with the mischievous design to destroy the legal validity of the electoral process. The electoral agency also asserted that the alteration of the number of votes polled was not possible.

Why did the ECI release data now?

The poll panel has come out with the absolute number of voters on its own. This comes a day after the Supreme Court of India refused to issue directions to ECI on the plea of an NGO — Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) — seeking polling booth-wise voter turnout data.

As per the PTI news agency, the ECI said it has decided to further expand the format of turnout data to include the absolute number of voters in every parliamentary constituency.

The absolute numbers are discernable parliamentary constituency-wise by all citizens by applying the turnout percentage to total electors, both already made available in the public domain, said the poll panel.

Here electors are those who are part of the electoral roll and eligible to voters and 'voters' refers to those that have actually cast their vote in an election.

While the EC had been issuing turnout percentage, there had been demands to make public the actual number of voters in every phase.

Previously, the Election Commission, hitting out at the plea of the petitioner, had said there are "certain elements with vested interests" who keep throwing baseless and false allegations, "creating an unwarranted atmosphere of suspicion" to discredit the Election Commission of India.

"It is most humbly submitted that there is a consistent malafide campaign/design/efforts to keep on raising suspicion and doubt in every possible manner and by misleading assertions and baseless," it added.

The workers of both parties went out of control and tried to get to the stage to meet Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav. The situation worsened when the crowd barged through the barricades making it difficult for the police to contain the mob.

Gandhi and Yadav did not address the people and had to abruptly exit the campaign rally which was organised in support of Amarnath Maurya, who is contesting from the Phulpur Lok Sabha seat on an SP ticket.

Explaining the situation, Congress leader Rewati Raman Singh said, "The crowd had become too big, and there weren't enough police officers, which caused the crowd to become uncontrollable and rush towards the stage. As a result, Akhilesh Ji and Rahul Ji had to leave without giving their speeches."

Congress president Malliakarjun Kharge on Saturday (May 18) lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing him of "provoking" people and called on the Election Commission to take stern action.

He also alleged that PM Modi was supporting the "illegal" Mahayuti government in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

"We have not used bulldozers to date... The Election Commission should take action against those who make instigating speeches. The Prime Minister himself is doing it. He is provoking people. After our government comes, everything will be protected as per our Constitution, we will follow the Constitution," Kharge said during a media briefing in Mumbai.

He then claimed that the INDI alliance will win 46 out of the 48 seats in the state of Maharashtra and will defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"INDIA bloc will win 46 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra. People are saying this themselves. Our alliance will win maximum seats and defeat BJP...," Kharge claimed.

Kharge's remarks came after PM Modi, during his rally in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki, said that Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) would run bulldozer over Ayodhya's Ram Temple if they get elected in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.

"If the Congress, SP and their INDIA partners come to power, our Ram Lalla would have to return to the tent again as they would run a bulldozer over the Ram Mandir. They should take lessons from Yogi-ji (Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath) on where to run bulldozers and where not to," PM Modi said on Friday (May 17).

"The Congress and the Samajwadi Party have become slaves to appeasement politics. And, when Modi uncovers the truth before the people, they accuse me of creating a Hindu-Muslim divide," he further said.

The Indian prime minister then exuded confidence that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was all set to register its third consecutive win and return to power again.

"June 4 (counting day) is not too far away now. All doubts will be cleared and the entire country and the world will know when we score a hat-trick of wins and return for a third term at the Centre."

All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Sonia Gandhi on Friday (May 17) made an emotional appeal to the people of Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli, urging them to accept her son, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with open arms, just as they accepted her.

She further asserted during her very first public address amid the ongoing Lok Sabha election campaign that Rahul "won't disappoint them".

Recalling the 'age-old' roots of the Gandhi family with the people of the constituency in the northern state, the AICC chief expressed gratitude to the residents of the city.

"I am very happy that I got the opportunity to come among you after so long...You all gave me the opportunity to serve you as an MP, this is the biggest treasure of my life. For the last 100 years, the roots of our family are connected to the soil of this land. This relation is as pure as Ganga Maa. Sonia Gandhi's emotional appeal to people of Raebareli; 'I am handing over my son to you'

Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha President Tejasvi Surya on Monday (May 13) accepted an invitation for a public debate with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and nominated BJYM's Vice President Abhinav Prakash.

Notably, the invitation for a public debate was extended by former Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur, former High Court Chief Justice AP Shah, and senior journalist N Ram to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Surya proposed Prakash's name stating that he was a young and educated leader from the Pasi scheduled caste community, who make up about 30 per cent of the population in Rae Baraeli, where Gandhi is contesting the elections.

Elaborating on Prakash's credentials, he wrote in a letter, "He is not only a distinguished leader within our youth wing but also an articulate spokesperson for the policies and reforms implemented by our government. An alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University and an assistant professor of economics at Delhi University's Ramjas College, with previous teaching stints at SRCC, his profound understanding of social, economic, and political dynamics is poised to enrich the debate significantly."

During his speech, the crowd engaged in playful banter, teasing Rahul Gandhi about his marital status and prodding him about his plans to enter wedlock.

“Ab jaldi hi karni padegi (now, I will have to get married soon),” Rahul Gandhi responded with a smile when asked when he was getting married.

Rahul Gandhi's sister and fellow Congress leader, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also attended the rally in Rae Bareli. On May 3, the Congress party announced Rahul Gandhi as their candidate for Rae Bareli and KL Sharma for Amethi, leaving out Priyanka Gandhi and Robert Vadra from the election race.

Rae Bareli, a stronghold of the Gandhi family, has a rich political history. Sonia Gandhi contested and won the Amethi seat in 1999 before passing it on to Rahul in 2004. Prior to Sonia Gandhi's tenure, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi won the Rae Bareli seat three times. The constituency also elected Indira's husband and Congress leader Feroze Gandhi twice, in 1952 and 1957.

At Rae Bareli's Maharajganj, Rahul Gandhi said, “...Ours is a 100-year-old relationship with Rae Bareli. A few days ago when I was sitting with my mother, I told her that I said in a video that I have two mothers - Sonia ji and Indira ji. My mother did not like this, but I explained to her that a mother is the one who shows the path to the child and also protects her. Both my mother and Indira Ji did this for me. This is the 'karma-bhoomi' of both my mothers. This is the reason I have come to contest from Rae Bareli.”

Reaching out to farmers, the Congress MP said, “...I promise that if the Congress-INDIA bloc comes to power at the Centre, my first job will be to waive off loans of poor farmers.”

Rahul Gandhi, currently serving as a Member of Parliament from Kerala's Wayanad, is seeking re-election there also while contesting in Rae Bareli. He previously represented Amethi from 2004 to 2019. In Rae Bareli, he will face off against Dinesh Pratap Singh, a former Congress member now with the BJP, who has served as an MLC three times.

This is the reason I have come to contest from Rae Bareli.” Reaching out to farmers, the Congress MP said, “...I promise that if the Congress-INDIA bloc comes to power at the Centre, my first job will be to waive off loans of poor farmers.” Rahul Gandhi, currently serving as a Member of Parliament from Kerala's Wayanad, is seeking re-election there also while contesting in Rae Bareli. Is Rahul Gandhi tying the knot? This is what he said at rally held in Rae Bareli

Union Minister Smriti Irani taking a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questioned his ability to engage in a one-on-one discussion with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked if he was a “PM candidate of the INDI Alliance”.

Her remarks came after Gandhi accepted an invitation to have a public debate with the Indian prime minister over crucial issues concerning the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

"Firstly, the person who does not have the courage to contest against a normal BJP worker in his so-called castle should refrain from boasting. Secondly, who wants to sit at the level with PM Modi and have a debate? I want to ask him if he is a PM candidate of the INDIA bloc," said the BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Amethi.

Smriti Irani hits out at Rahul Gandhi over debate challenge to Modi: 'Is he PM candidate?'

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (May 10) took a swipe at Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar advising the NCP (SP) leader and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief to join hands with Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde after the results of Lok Sabha polls are released instead of "dying by merging" with the Congress.

"A big leader here who is active for 40-50 years is worried after polling in Baramati (Lok Sabha seat). He says that after June 4, smaller parties, in order to survive, will merge with the Congress," PM Modi said in an apparent reference to Pawar without taking his name.

"This means the nakli NCP and nakli Shiv Sena have made up their minds to merge with the Congress," PM Modi said, addressing an election rally in Nandurbar district of north Maharashtra.

"But instead of dying by merging with the Congress, come to Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde," the prime minister exclaimed.

Pawar, reacting to PM Modi's comments said that he will not partner with any person, party or ideology that does not back parliamentary democracy.

"PM Modi's recent speeches have been conducive to creating rifts among communities, which is dangerous for the country. Wherever things are not in the nation's interest, neither I nor my colleagues will venture," he said.

PM Modi's remarks came after the NCP (SP) leader in a recent statement said that factions and regional parties should either come closer or merge with the Congress in the coming years.

"In the next couple of years, several regional parties will associate more closely with the Congress. Or they may look at the option of merging with the Congress if they believe that is the best for their party," NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar had told The Indian Express.

Lok Sabha Polls: PM Modi tells Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray to join BJP-led NDA, NCP (SP) leader responds

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi became the target of a complaint for filing his nomination from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli constituency. The nationality of Rahul Gandhi and his recent conviction for defamation are questioned in the complaint.

Who filed the complaint against Rahul Gandhi's Rae Bareli nomination?

Advocate Ashok Pandey filed the complaint on behalf of Anirudh Pratap Singh. The attorney filed a complaint against Gandhi with the Rae Bareli Returning Officer, seeking the annulment of the Congress leader's candidacy on two grounds: his nationality and his conviction.

“First, Rahul Gandhi has been convicted for two years... He is ineligible to contest elections. Even though the Supreme Court has put a stay on Rahul Gandhi's conviction, it has not given any verdict like Afzal Ansari saying he can contest again... Since his stay on conviction does not involve permission to contest elections he should back off,” Pandey told ANI.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Complaint questions Rahul Gandhi’s Rae Bareli nomination for ‘being British citizen’

Russian chess great Garry Kasparov hoped that his "little joke" on Indian politics does not pass for "advocacy or expertise" after his cheeky social media post on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's love for the game went viral.

Within hours of asking Gandhi to "first win Rae Bareli before challenging for the top", the 61-year-old said it was just a joke and should be seen as one.

"I very much hope my little joke does not pass for advocacy or expertise in Indian politics! But as an 'all-seeing monster with 1000 eyes,' as I was once described, I cannot fail to see a politician dabbling in my beloved game!" the former world champion, who retired in 2005, wrote in response to a post by actor Ranvir Shorey.

Shorey's comment appeared to be a dig at Gandhi's recent assertion that he was the best chess player among all Indian politicians. Kasparov gave the same reply to a few other accounts which commented on his original post.

The Congress recently shared a video of Gandhi playing chess on his mobile phone while on the Lok Sabha election campaign trail. The MP from Wayanad named Kasparov as his favourite chess player and drew parallels between the game and politics.

A user on X made a cheeky comment on his page, which read "feel so relieved that @Kasparov63 and @vishy64theking retired early and didn't have to face the greatest chess genius of our times."

Kasparov, rather unusually, originally responded to that post.

"Traditional (sic) dictates that you should first win from Raebareli before challenging for the top," wrote the fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin who is based in Croatia after fleeing his country.

Gandhi, while naming Kasparov as his favourite chess player, described him as a "non-linear thinker" in the Congress video.

"...once you get slightly better at it, the opponent's pieces actually operate almost like your own," he said, drawing comparison between chess and politics.

Gandhi filed his nomination from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh on Friday and is also contesting from Wayanad.

A former world number one for a record 255 weeks, Kasparov became the youngest-ever undisputed world champion at the age of 22 in 1985 and is a political activist now.

The iconic player is a contemporary of Indian great Viswanathan Anand.

Recently, when 17-year-old D Gukesh bettered his record of becoming the youngest challenger to the world title by winning the Candidates Tournament in Toronto, Kasparov had put out a congratulatory post on X.

He described Gukesh as "the Indian earthquake in Toronto".
