It, however, will be Rathour’s second stint with any franchise in the IPL, having worked with Punjab Kings earlier.&nbsp;

Previously, he worked as the director of cricket at Himachal Pradesh.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) appointed Rathour and former Sri Lanka spin legend Rangana Herath as their batting and bowling coaches, respectively, for the Sri Lanka series.&nbsp;

Though Herath’s contract will run through till the end of the India Tests, NZC appointed Rathour for the ongoing SL series.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Rathour and Dravid will work on finalising the retention list as BCCI nears announcing revised IPL retention rules.&nbsp;

Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s new head coach brought plenty of expectations. Though the one he replaced, Rahul Dravid, helped India end the ICC trophy drought after 11 years by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas, Gambhir helping KKR win IPL 2024 was seen as a&nbsp;huge&nbsp;milestone.

Two months into his new role, Gambhir oversaw India win the T20I series win against Sri Lanka, but they lost the One-Dayers, with his latest assignment being the ongoing Test series with Bangladesh at home.&nbsp;

Dravid and Gambhir have played together for several years, and having known GG from closed quarters, Dravid sounded pleased with Gautam’s appointment. Although he admitted every coach would have his share of success and failures, Dravid backed Gambhir to taste success only for what he brings. Rahul said the Indian Team would benefit hugely under GG’s leadership.

<h2>India succeeded under Dravid</h2>

Dravid’s appointment brought wholesome changes to Indian cricket, with Rohit Sharma replacing Virat Kohli as all-format captain.&nbsp;

Under Dravid, like it was during his captaincy days, Team India came close to winning ICC titles but failed in most. They reached three finals and one semi-final of three ICC events during his tutelage, with their only success coming in the last one (T20 WC) against South Africa in June earlier this year.

India also won the Border-Gavaskar series and the five-match Test series under Dravid at home, with winning the 2023 Asia Cup Final against Sri Lanka being the highlight.&nbsp;

<h3>What is next in line for Gautam?</h3>

Team India will play 10 Tests until January next year, with Gambhir’s toughest assignment being the away five-match Test series against Australia starting November 22.&nbsp;

"One of the big reasons for that is that talent comes from everywhere, from all over the country. If you go back to the time of, say, GR Vishwanath or even when I was starting out, most of the talent came from the big cities or a few states."

"Even if there were talented boys in smaller places, they had to come to the big cities to play cricket. But today I think you see in Indian cricket that boys are coming from everywhere," he added.

Dravid also cited the example of India's premier domestic tournament, the Ranji Trophy, where all the teams are now competitive.

"You just look at the standard of the Ranji Trophy. In the old days when you played in the South Zone, other than playing Hyderabad or Tamil Nadu, I think it is fair to say, without being disrespectful, that a lot of other teams you could take it not for granted but you could certainly take it a little bit more lightly."

"I don't think there is any team in the South Zone today that you can walk in and say you will beat comfortably," said Dravid.

Per a report in the Cricbuzz, some teams had even offered the former India great ‘blank cheques’ to accept the head coach role, but Dravid knew his next destination would be the franchise he once called his ‘home’.

"I am pleased to be returning to the franchise I have called 'home' for a number of years in the past," Dravid said in a statement.&nbsp;

"After the World Cup, I feel it's the ideal time for me to take on another challenge, and the Royals is the perfect place to do that … It's an exciting opportunity for us to take this team to the next level given the kind of talent and resources we have at our disposal and I'm looking forward to getting started,” he continued.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the franchise’s CEO, Jake Lush McCrum, also acknowledged Dravid’s loyalty to the franchise while accepting how good his coaching skills have been.

Meanwhile, at the RR from next season onwards, Dravid will work closely with RR’s Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, who coached the franchise for four years until recently.

"Rahul is one of the greatest players to have played the game, but what he has achieved over the past decade as a coach is extraordinary. The characteristics that he possesses as a coach to nurture talent but also enable them to consistently perform at the highest level will allow the Rajasthan Royals to further challenge for the title," Sangakkara said at Dravid’s appointment as RR’s new head coach.

"I've already had some meaningful conversations with him about his vision for this team, and he is looking forward to delivering the results for the Royals,” he continued.

Dravid spoke his heart out upon his return to the franchise he once called ‘home’.&nbsp;

However, India lost the final of the WTC and the ODI World Cup.

Dravid, however, will spend time with his son and try to get him into the Indian senior team. Samit, 18, however, will not be eligible to play in the 2026 U19 World Cup as he turns above 19. However, his current focus will be to do well in domestic competitions before moving up the pyramid.

Rahul Dravid ended his Team India coaching tenure post India's T20 World Cup triumph in June, in West Indies and the USA. As he made it clear that he wasn't keen on an extension, Gautam Gambhir replaced Dravid as India's all-format coach. Just like some other cricketing boards, like England Cricket Board (ECB), Cricket South Africa (CSA), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB),&nbsp;many believed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would also not go for a one coach formula for all formats. However, the board stuck to the tried-and-tested approach while naming Gambhir as head coach across&nbsp;formats. Recently, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah explained BCCI's stance on having one coach.&nbsp;

“If you ask me what the lowest point is, I would say the South Africa Test series early on in my career,” Dravid said, as quoted by News18.

India won the first Test but failed to win the remaining two, losing the three-match series 1-2. Though Captain Rohit Sharma missed out on getting picked due to injury, India came close to creating history but fell shy.

“We won the first Test match in South Africa in Centurion, and then we were playing in the second and third Test match. We have never won a series in South Africa, as you know. It was a really big opportunity for us to win that series.

“Some of our senior players were not there. Rohit Sharma was injured, and we didn’t have some senior players in that series. But we were very close, and in both the Test matches—the second and the third test matches—in the third inning, we had a big opportunity.&nbsp;

“We could have set a decent score and won the game, but South Africa played well. They chased back in the fourth inning. So, I would say that that was probably my lowest point in my coaching of not being able to win that series in spite of being ahead,” Dravid added.

Dravid admitted he took learning from that series loss and made required changes wherever needed to ensure the team went past the winning line the next time.

“But there were a lot of learnings from that. You know a lot of those experiences, and you know we learnt a lot from them,” he said.

“So I think as coaches, what is very important is that you will go through ups and downs. What is really important is to maintain that balance and realise that you can’t always win games. Other teams have also come to play; you’re playing against some world-class sides, and you have no right to always win," he added.

As per a report in HT, the producer said, "On this flight, Barbados to Delhi, I think hardly anyone slept for more than six hours. That would have been the maximum. At no point was anyone quiet. Everyone was mingling around. Players came to meet the members of the press and few others. Star Sports engineers were also part of the flight because theirs was cancelled and they were also accommodated. But there was a lot of interaction. Rohit Sharma came several times. I believe at one moment, Rahul Dravid came up to the economy section to figure out if there was a 4-seater because he wanted to sleep. Rahul Dravid backs heavily-criticised USA leg of T20 WC, says ‘compromises need to be made...’

Gautam Gambhir has been a hot topic in Indian cricket since replacing veteran Rahul Dravid as the new Team India coach. The former two-time World Cup winner will make his India coaching debut with the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Saturday (July 27) in Pallekele. Being in Gambhir’s shoes, Dravid knows the pressure of coaching the Indian Team. Briefing Gautam about the challenges that might come his way, Dravid urged him to play for the fans, whom he calls demanding but are always behind the team.

"As you know, the expectations will be high, and the scrutiny will be intense. But even in the worst of times, you will never be alone. You will have the support of the players, your support staff, the leaders of the past, the management and never forget for whom you play - for fans, who are very demanding but will always be behind the team,” Dravid said.

Going speechless over this beautiful message from Dravid, Gambhir began saying he was at a loss for words as he felt overwhelmed by this. Gautam continued saying he is thankful for such kind words, and it impacts him because he had grown up idolising Dravid as a cricketer.

"I don't know how to react because this message means so much to me," Gambhir said.&nbsp;

"The reason is not because it comes from the person who I have succeeded but from a person who I have always looked up to when I was playing.

"I have always felt that and I said it in a lot of my interviews - I think the most selfless cricketer I have actually ever played with. Rahul bhai has done anything and everything Indian cricket needed.

"I think there is so much to learn from, not only for me but for the next generation and the current generation as well. That's how important Indian cricket is, not me, not individuals,” Gambhir said.&nbsp;

Former India spinner Amit Mishra has said that Shubman Gill won't be his first choice as captain of the team. The veteran spinner said that Gill 'doesn't know anything about captaincy,' while speaking on a YouTube podcast.
