<p>Vet nurse Sally Frith, who works at Derby PDSA Pet hospital, told The Guardian, "Daisy has broken a new record; we couldn't believe the number of coins she'd managed to eat, especially for such a tiny puppy."</p>

<p>"The coins had been causing a blockage which, if left, could have been fatal, so it's a good job her owner brought her into PDSA when she did."</p>

<p>UK's leading vet charity, PDSA, said that Daisy was examined, and vets could identify that her stomach was the cause of her pain. This raised suspicions of a blockage, so she was sedated and then X-rayed to gather conclusive results.</p>

<p>"I had no idea a puppy would even eat this sort of thing, and we were all beside ourselves with worry and so scared we might lose her. My four-year-old daughter is best friends with Daisy, and she was very upset," Daisy's owner, Ivana, added.</p>

<p>The shocking incident emerged after Google filed a lawsuit against a conman based in Cameroon for defrauding thousands of people by “perpetrating a puppy fraud scheme to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic for personal gain.”</p>

<p>In the lawsuit, the giant tech company listed 20 sites as fraudulent saying that the person in Africa used several Google services in the scam.</p>

<p>According to the suit, the scam used "alluring photos of purebred puppies" along with "testimonials from supposedly satisfied customers" to trick the gullible victims.</p>

<p>It said that people paid thousands of dollars for puppies that never arrived.</p>

<p>The New York Times reported that scammers capitalised on people’s loneliness during lockdowns.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For instance, a victim was tricked into paying $700 in “electronic gift cards” to buy a puppy. After sending the gift card information through Google Voice accounts, the victim was told to pay an additional $1,500 to deliver the puppy. According to the complaint, the puppy never arrived, reports The Guardian.</p>

<p>Google took note of the scam after it was flagged by AARP, an interest group focusing on issues affecting people over the age of 50.</p>

<p>The company tracked a network of linked email addresses, voice numbers and websites that all promised puppies – with no deliveries.</p>

<p>In a blogpost about the lawsuit, Google says the scam disproportionately targeted older Americans, who can be more vulnerable to cyber attacks.</p>

<p>Federal authorities estimate older people are scammed out of $650m a year.</p>

<p>According to the Better Business Bureau, a non-profit organisation, 35% of all online shopping scams reported to them in 2021 were "pet scams”, reported Fox News.</p>

<p>Another study found that from January through October 2021, "there were 165 per cent more puppy scams in the US than during the same period in pre-pandemic 2019."</p>

Online puppy scam: People tricked into paying for canine that never arrived

<p>If you think your puppy understands when you are telling him to have food or drop that sock, you might be correct about it, a scientist has confirmed.</p>

<p>Emily Bray, a post-doctoral research associate at the&nbsp;Arizona Canine Cognition Center&nbsp;at the University of Arizona's School of Anthropology has confirmed that puppies are born with the skills to understand and communicate with human beings.</p>

<p>Bray and her team observed 375 puppies that were eight weeks old and were tested for a battery of social-cognitive measures that had been taught to adult dogs, but not to puppies.</p>

<p>"We know that adult dogs are good at these tasks," Bray explained. "When does that start? Does it take years of observing humans and living with humans, or is that ability something they are more biologically prepared for that has evolved over the course of domestication?"</p>

<p>These puppies (who were a group of golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers and lab-golden mix) were all staying with their mother and were not yet introduced to training.</p>

<p>The puppies were subjected to two tasks. The first was making eye contact with the researchers and the second was to follow the researcher’s hands and eyes that were gesturing towards a treat, which were hidden under cups.</p>

<p>Puppies able to successfully follow the cues and found the treats on their own, hinting that they do not need training for these activities and can easily communicate with humans.</p>

<p>"They're not perfect, but it's definitely better than chance. There's something that they're picking up on, even at 8 weeks old," she said.</p>
