<h2>Giant vacuum for carbon removal</h2>

Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm reportedly said that the technology at the heart of these projects can be likened to a giant vacuum capable of extracting decades' worth of carbon pollution directly from the sky.

Granholm said, “If we deploy this at scale, this technology can help us make serious headway toward our net-zero emission goals.”

Once operational, these projects are projected to eliminate over 2 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide annually from the atmosphere, equivalent to the environmental impact of nearly half a million gas-powered cars being taken off the roads each year.

The Energy Department revealed plans to unveil additional projects in the upcoming year.

Moreover, the Energy Department has selected 19 projects for smaller "award negotiations." Among these, Chevron Corp.'s division in San Ramon, California, has proposed a direct air capture hub, which has been allocated $3 million for development.

Additionally, Carbon Capture Inc. has secured $12.5 million for the Wyoming Regional Direct Air Capture Hub, further expanding the scope of carbon removal efforts.

The Kyodo news agency on Thursday reported that despite condemning the coup, Japan, as a major donor to Myanmar, plans to continue emergency assistance offered through international organisations and NGOs in such areas as combating the Covid-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

On February 1, Myanmar's military seized power in the country, announcing a one-year state of emergency and vowing to take action against alleged voter fraud during the November 8 general election, which was won by the NLD party.&nbsp;

Myanmar's state counsellor, as well as the president and other top officials, who were members of the ruling NLD party, were detained and accused of election fraud.&nbsp;

Protests have been held across Myanmar since the military took over in which dozens of protesters have been injured and four people killed.&nbsp;

After coup, Japan mulls halting new assistance projects to Myanmar

Uttar Pradesh is all set to organise the second ground-breaking ceremony next week to launch 158 projects entailing investment of around&nbsp;Rs.&nbsp;1 lakh crore as part of efforts to bring proposals on the ground, according to an official.

The state government in July had conducted a similar ceremony for the launch of investment projects worth&nbsp;Rs.&nbsp;60,000 crore for which initial MoUs were signed during the investor summit held in February.

"158 projects worth over&nbsp;Rs.&nbsp;one lakh crore have been identified that are to be launched in the second ground breaking ceremony to be organised on November 2-3 in Lucknow. Directives have been issued to officers to meet investors and resolve their problems, if any," an official spokesman told PTI.

According to Chief Secretary Anup Chandra Pandey, officials have been asked to investors should be issued 'letter of comfort' and other departmental clearances timely so that they did not have to face and problems.

"We have asked officials for spot inspection of construction works of projects which have been launched in the first phase (in July) and hold a special three-day campaign to resolve problems of investors," he said.

MoUs for the projects, that are to be launched in the second ground breaking ceremony were signed by the government in the investor summit.

Government officials are meeting representatives of the shortlisted companies to make the programme a success.

The opposition, however, termed this launch as a "political gimmick".

SP leader and MLC Rajpal Kashyap said that "as 2019 Lok Sabha polls are near this is nothing but a political gimmick by the BJP to confuse voters. Everyone one knows the ground reality. However, refuting the allegations, BJP spokesman Shalabh Mani Tripathi said that the event will once again prove "faith of investors in the Yogi Adityanath government".

"Unlike previous regimes our government is committed for all round development of the state. Initiatives taken by the government have started yielding results and&nbsp;Rs.&nbsp;1 lakh crore investment projects launch in November is enough to silence opposition," Mr Tripathi said.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath had said that ground breaking ceremonies, similar to the first one, should be held every two to three months.

While the government had signed MoUs worth more than&nbsp;Rs.&nbsp;4 lakh crore in February, it launched projects worth&nbsp;Rs.&nbsp;60,000 crore in five months in a massive ceremony presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

More than 80 prominent industrialists including those of large groups like Reliance, Mahindra and Adani had participated in the event.

Representatives of Paytm, Gail, HPCL, TCS, ACC Cement, Metro Cash and Carry, PTC Industries and Sriram groups were also present in the July ceremony.

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 with an aim to raise awareness about sustainability and environment protection. It was first initiated in the year 1973 by the United Nations General Assembly and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to check global environmental issues like global warming, deforestation and food security among others.

Over the years, the day has metamorphosed into what can aptly be described as a global campaign on emerging environmental issues ranging from marine pollution, human overpopulation to sustainable consumption and wildlife conservation.

This year's Environment Day campaigns and programmes are to run on the theme of 'Beat Plastic Pollution'.

As per a report published by an environmental watchdog, WorldWatch, in the year 2015, "Some 299 million tons of plastics were produced in 2013, representing a 4 percent increase over 2012. Recovery and recycling, however, remain insufficient, and millions of tons of plastics end up in landfills and oceans each year".

"According to the United Nations Environmental Program, between 22 percent and 43 percent of the plastic used worldwide is disposed of in landfills, where its resources are wasted, the material takes up valuable space, and it blights communities," the report adds.&nbsp

German leaf plates

Remember the age-old Indian practice of consuming food on a banana leaf or disposable cutlery made from dried leaves? That could be the way the world might head soon.&nbsp

A German startup called the Leaf Republic creates durable, bio-degradable cutlery from waste leaves. The leaf-based cutlery is free from artificial agents and chemicals. The leaves are procured from wild vines of South America and Asia. A single plate comprises three layers, sewn and put together using palm fibres.&nbsp

"It all started with a vision: Outdoor tableware, as renewable and biodegradable as a leaf falling from a tree. And here we are," mentions the official Leaf-Republic page on Kickstarter.

The waterproof leaf-based cutlery is washable can be used again. The plates, when discarded, take around a month to get decomposed completely.

Ooho, edible water

Think of it, packaged drinking water is almost a necessity and requires truckloads of plastic. Experts from the Skipping Rocks Lab, London, UK imagined a world free from plastic and dreamt of creating balls of drinking water that can be consumed in its entirety, along with its packaging that contains no plastic.

Ooho, 'edible water bottles' were put on trial last year in April in London, UK. Tiny balls of water are, in reality, ice dipped in a mix of algae and calcium chloride. The entire ball of water can be gobbled down as it is, the product is completely digestible.

"The aim of Ooho is to provide the convenience of plastic bottles while limiting the environmental impact," Skipping Rocks Lab.
