"We have reached a tipping point and we still have the ability to change course, but only 10 years," said the first in line to the British throne, who has been a passionate environmentalist for decades.

He said climate change was a scientific fact, rejecting suggestions from sceptics that "scaremongering" was dominating the debate.

"We have abused nature, exploited her and given her nothing back in return," he told an audience at Christchurch's Lincoln University.

"Nothing is sacred anymore, we are reaping a loss of biodiversity and experiencing the impacts of climate changes. We urgently need to pay the mounting debt."

He and wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will have the chance to see the impact of climate change at close quarters when they make their first visit to the Solomon Islands on Saturday.

Some communities in the impoverished archipelago have already had to move because of rising seas and the entire population of about 660,000 has been affected by increasingly extreme weather, including wild cyclones.

If media reports are to be believed, Britain`s Prince Charles has been offered a royal role in the upcoming James Bond film.

If Prince Charles says yes, he won't be the first member from the royal family to appear alongside 007. His mom, Queen Elizabeth II, starred in a short homage for the opening ceremony of London`s 2012 Olympic Games."

They loved the buzz around the Queen`s appearance alongside Daniel Craig and think Charles could top even that," a source was quoted as saying to The Sun.

"He is the epitome of everything British, perfect for a cameo role and Bond fans worldwide would absolutely love it."

The possible cameo in `Bond 25` comes after the prince visited the film set recently, posing for photos with Bond actor Craig.
"Now he is considering it," the source told the British paper.

In case he turns down the offer, the source believes that there would be two obvious replacements for the role- Charles` sons, Princes Harry and William.

"If Charles doesn`t go for it Harry and Wills could be in producers` sights next," the source added.

The untitled `Bond 25` has been marred by problems, including, an explosion on the film set and Craig`s ankle surgery.

"It is no secret that the film has suffered a number of setbacks but landing a Royal could be just what the movie needs," revealed the source.

Queen Elizabeth is all set to "give up her powers" to Prince Charles when she turns 95 in two years, a royal expert has claimed.

The Queen turned 93 earlier in April but could bring in the 1937 Regency Act in two years to relinquish the "majority of duties" to her son and heir to the throne.

The Regency Act allows a reigning monarch to give away the powers if they feel they are unable to fully perform their duties.

Even after handing over her powers, Elizabeth will keep her royal title, but Charles will step up to perform the majority of her duties, with her husband Prince Philip, becoming the Guardian of the Queen.

In order for it to pass, Prince Philip along with a Houses of Parliament spokesperson and a third senior person will have to provide evidence supporting the Queen`s request.

Royal author Phil Dampier said, "There is talk that when she reaches 95 in a couple of years she may slow down and possibly the Regency Act will be brought in. She will still be Queen but Prince Charles will, in fact, take over most of the duties."

"He is starting to do that already, being at the state opening in Parliament and the Commonwealth conference. He is starting to take over a lot of the duties and doing the investitures," Dampier added.

British naturalist David Attenborough, 92, who narrates the series, hosted the event at London`s Natural History Museum.

Charles, who paid tribute to Attenborough`s work, made his first speech on the environment in 1968 and has long warned of the dangers of human damage to the natural world.

"What I want to know is how can we possibly sacrifice our children`s and grandchildren`s entire future, let alone the future of all life on this miraculous planet by not doing what is required now," he said in a speech at the event.

He said he hoped 'Our Planet' would educate hundreds of millions of people around the world about what action was required. Charles also said it was a source of great pride that both his sons had taken up the cause of conservation.

The eight-part series, which showcases the natural world and the threats it faces, will be released on Friday.

Produced by the makers of the award-winning 'Planet Earth' show, it takes viewers from glaciers to jungles, looking at how their animal inhabitants are challenged by changes in climate, surroundings and human actions.

"Don`t be extravagant, don`t waste, do what you can to cut out unnecessary expenditure, don`t eat more than you need, don`t travel more than you need," Attenborough told Reuters at the premiere when asked what his message would be to the world.

"Be responsible careful citizens of this planet which is our only home, and for the creatures that live in it."

More than 600 crew members were involved in the four-year project, filming in 50 countries.

Attenborough, who has helped raise awareness of plastic pollution in the sea, said he hoped the show`s message would resonate worldwide through the streaming service`s global reach.

"The problem is worldwide and the solution has to be worldwide," he told Reuters in an interview ahead of the premiere. "It is a world thing, that`s why this distribution of this is so important. The thought that it will be seen around the world is very, very important."

On Prince Charles' 70th birthday, the new family portrait speaks of familial bliss

Britain`s Prince Charles said he will stop speaking out on issues he feels strongly about when he becomes king as he is "not that stupid".

Speaking ahead of his 70th birthday next week, the son of 92-year-old Queen Elizabeth said that the role of a monarch was completely different to his current position as Prince of Wales.

"The idea, somehow, that I`m going to go on in exactly the same way, if I have to succeed, is complete nonsense because the two - the two situations - are completely different," he told the BBC.

Asked whether his public campaigning will continue, he said: "No, it won`t. I`m not that stupid."

Britain has a constitutional monarchy, where the monarch has a formal role in the formation of governments but an obligation to remain neutral and no practical political power.

Charles has been outspoken on topics such as the environment and social issues. In September Charles said in an interview with GQ magazine in September that "My problem is I find there are too many things that need doing or battling on behalf of."

But he told the BBC that he would operate within "constitutional parameters" as king.

"I do realise that it is a separate exercise being sovereign. So, of course, I understand entirely how that should operate," he said.

But he defended his activism as heir to the throne, which includes founding the Prince`s Trust charity in 1976 to support vulnerable young people.

He said: "If it`s meddling to worry about the inner cities as I did 40 years ago, then if that`s meddling I`m proud of it."

Charles was four when his grandfather George VI died and his mother ascended to the throne at the age of 25.

In that time, Charles has sometimes courted controversy of the kind that Elizabeth has sought to avoid.

Beside his outspoken views, Charles faced intrigue around the acrimonious end to his marriage to first wife, Princess Diana, and hostility in some quarters to his second wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

Camilla told the BBC that his drive to get things done spurred his activism. "He would like to save the world," she said.

Charles` supporters say his causes - such as helping disadvantaged young people find work, inter-faith dialogue and campaigning against throwaway plastic - are often prescient.

But other views, such as his support for complementary medicine, still attract scorn.

In 2013, it was revealed he had held 36 meetings with government ministers over three years, while two years later, Britain`s top court ruled that dozens of his letters to ministers - dubbed the `black spider memos` because of his scrawled handwriting - could be released.

Topics included rural housing, food in hospitals and the fate of the Patagonian Toothfish.

His son, William, said that he would like Charles to spend more time with his grandchildren.

"When he`s there, he`s brilliant," William said. "We need him there as much as possible."

Britain's Prince Charles assures he won't meddle when he is the king

'Rebel' Prince Charles could put monarchy at risk, author says

When Prince Charles, who turns 70 next week, becomes king on the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth, he will have waited longer than any of his predecessors to head a royal family that dates back 1,000 years.

Some monarchists fear, and Republicans hope, he will be a poor king. His admirers believe his wisdom, thoughtfulness and concerns for conservation and the environment will win him the public support he deserves.

Overshadowing it all is his late first wife, Princess Diana, the acrimonious end to their marriage, and the enduring hostility in some quarters to his second wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

"You are accused of being controversial just because you are trying to draw attention to things that aren't necessarily part of the conventional viewpoint," Charles said in an interview with GQ magazine in September.

"My problem is I find there are too many things that need doing or battling on behalf of."

Charles Philip Arthur George, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Earl of Chester, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland was born at Buckingham Palace on Nov. 14, 1948.

He was four when his grandfather George VI died and his mother ascended to the throne at the age of 25. The following year, Charles watched with his grandmother and aunt, the late Princess Margaret, as Elizabeth was crowned queen of 16 realms.

He despised his remote Scottish school, Gordonstoun, which his father also attended, but was the first royal heir to get a degree after studying at Cambridge University.

Charles was made Prince of Wales at a grand ceremony in 1969. But at 92 his mother remains in good health with no plans to abdicate, so his wait goes on.

For his critics, and even some monarchists who think he will bring disaster upon the House of Windsor, that is no bad thing.

"Frankly we're very lucky he hasn't been king, because whereas the queen has been the most exemplary monarch and has kept the monarchy much in people's esteem, I think Charles would undermine it," said Tom Bower, author of 'Rebel Prince', an unauthorised biography.

Such unflattering biographies portray Charles as an arrogant, weak man who enjoys the trappings of luxury - he has his own royal harpist - is intolerant of criticism, and is a devotee of oddball theories.

"HE'S COMPLICATED"

Charles' supporters say he is an easy quarry, with every action and utterance scrutinised by an often unsympathetic media.

"When you're in his very exposed public position, loyalty and disloyalty is a quite complex situation," said a former senior aide who worked with the prince for many years.

He said detractors simply chose to view Charles's characteristics in a bad light.

"There's a whole load of stuff that is just not true," the former aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters. "Bower's only spoken to people with a grievance."

So what is he really like?

"He's complicated. I've rarely met anyone so curious about the world as him and eager to know what's going on and why. More than anything, he's got this drive, he's phenomenally hard-working," the ex-aide said.

Simon Lewis, the Queen's communications secretary from 1998 to 2001, described Charles as full of enthusiasm, committed, with a "wicked sense of humour".

"If you are a public figure ... if you put your head above the parapet then you get criticism," Lewis told Reuters.

Friends and foes speak of his devotion to duty. The prince's working day starts at breakfast - he doesn't have lunch - and finishes near midnight, every day. The ex-aide said he got a work-related call from Charles on Christmas Day.

In private, Charles is passionate about arts, culture, theatre, literature, opera and pop - he's also a big fan of Leonard Cohen.

Happiest in his garden, he loves Shakespeare, paints watercolours and has written children's books. He can be fun but also short-tempered and demanding, the former aide said.

LIFE OF LUXURY?

Official figures show his recent overseas tours were the most expensive taken by the Royals.

"He's ... intent on a very, very hyper-luxurious way of life, flying by private jet, (using the) royal train," said Bower, whose says his book was based on interviews with 120 people, many of whom worked for the Royals.

Charles rejects such claims.

"Oh, don't believe all that crap," he told an Australian radio station in April when asked if it was true he travelled with his own toilet seat as Bower described.

But he can still put on a regal show: If he entertains, there is beautiful food, wine and service.

"He thinks that's right for the Prince of Wales and I think people would be disappointed if it wasn't," the ex-aide said.

INTERFERING

It is not just his lifestyle that attracts umbrage.

His campaigning for causes such as the environment and climate change has led to accusations he is interfering in matters that British royals should avoid.

However, Charles has said it would be "criminally negligent" not to use his position to help people and his role has allowed him to express strong views. That would be impossible for a monarch, who under Britain's unwritten constitution, must remain apolitical.

"There's a whole of lot of things I have tried to focus on over all these years that I felt needed attention, not everybody else did, but maybe now some years later they're beginning to realise that what I was trying to say was not quite as dotty as they thought," Charles said in an interview with younger son Harry in 2017.

His supporters say his causes - such as helping disadvantaged young people find work, and inter-faith dialogue - are often prescient and show concern for his fellow countrymen.

He acknowledges he has challenged orthodox views. He has long railed against a throwaway economic model that has polluted the world's oceans with plastic, now a mainstream concern.

But other views, such as his support for complementary medicine, still attract scorn.

In 2013, it was revealed he had held 36 meetings with government ministers over three years, while two years later, Britain's top court ruled that dozens of his letters to ministers - dubbed the 'black spider memos' because of his scrawled handwriting - could be released.

Topics included rural housing, food in hospitals and the fate of the Patagonian Toothfish.

DIANA

However, the issue that most fascinates the public remains Charles's divorce from Diana, her early death in a 1997 Paris car crash and his subsequent marriage in 2005 to Camilla. Some blame Camilla for the failure of his first marriage.

Opinion polls indicate Charles's standing has never fully recovered from damage suffered during the 1990s. A poll in January 2018 found 9 per cent picked Charles as among their favourite royals.

The same poll found 54 per cent had favourable opinions of the prince compared to 24 per cent unfavourable. His mother and sons William and Harry are viewed favourably by more than 80 per cent of Britons.

In a TV interview in 1995, Diana suggested Charles did not want to be king and was not cut out for such a "suffocating" role. Not so, say those who worked with him.

"Charles, the Prince Of Wales, is going to be the best-prepared monarch probably in history and I think he'll be a very good king," Lewis said.

Although Charles is loath to talk about becoming monarch, as it will mean the death of his mother, behind the scenes well-prepared plans for the occasion - codenamed Operation London Bridge - are ready.

Until then, his unique life as heir will go on.

"People rightly talk about the privilege and the money and the palaces and the Bentleys," the prince's former aide said. "It is a privilege, but it carries a great burden. I would never wish that life on anyone."

When Prince Charles, who turns 70 next week, becomes king on the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth, he will have waited longer than any of his predecessors to head a royal family that dates back 1,000 years.

"My problem is I find there are too many things that need doing or battling on behalf of." Charles Philip Arthur George, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Earl of Chester, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland was born at Buckingham Palace on Nov. "HE'S COMPLICATED" Charles' supporters say he is an easy quarry, with every action and utterance scrutinised by an often unsympathetic media. "Bower's only spoken to people with a grievance." So what is he really like? INTERFERING It is not just his lifestyle that attracts umbrage. "He had all the commemorative plates and stuff, and he died on this day four years ago, so it`s actually quite a nice full circle thing, I guess he`d be pretty proud." Sheeran is also the most-streamed artist of the year on music service Spotify. His third album 'Divide', topped the US album charts. "He has also used his celebrity to support several charities, including children`s hospices, anti-poverty campaigns and an AIDS charity. Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Sheeran said his late grandfather would have been pleased with his honour," noted a Reuters report. Barack Obama, on March 18, 2008, delivered arguably his most powerful address to date. He opened with words extracted from the Preamble to the United States Constitution, “We the people, in order to make a more perfect union,” and went on the chronicle his own interconnected ethnic heritage: “I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas.”

He then moved to his personal progress: “I’ve gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world’s poorest nations.” In an inspired and redolent passage, with a sure a nod to his African American doubters, Obama reminded his audience: “I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners — an inheritance we pass on to our two precious daughters.”

Let’s fantasise for a moment. Eighteen months from now, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announce they are expecting their first child. Meghan heralds the arrival, expressing her approval of Obama’s words: “I am the daughter of a black American woman who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners — an inheritance, my husband Harry and I will, in time, pass on to our precious child.”

By that time, we can surmise Meghan will have grown comfortable with the British media and accustomed to the obtuse way they ask questions about her ethnic identity. She’ll also have realised that her insistence that she is biracial and proud of it, simply doesn’t fly in Britain, a nation that has pursued a policy of multiculturalism and, later, cultural diversity expressly avoiding any mention of race or racial to remove any trace of biology. Biracial has too many unwholesome connotations. Meghan will get this and stop using the term.

We prefer the clumsier but more accurate “mixed heritage” to biracial and, as for “people of colour” — well, people get fired for that kind of anachronistic language in the UK. So Meghan will no doubt be advised to discover a new lexicon.

But sooner or later she will find the occasion to make a pronouncement that will either horrify or gratify the British public. At the moment, people are too excited about the prospect of a glamorous American from the entertainment industry to concern themselves overly with her ethnicity. But it’s certain to appear at some point over the next year or so.

Welcome to the 21st century

The British media have welcomed the uncertainty Meghan brings to the Royals. The UK’s top-selling newspaper, The Sun, shares the same sentiment as many others with its headline “Finally, the Royal Family have joined Britain in the 21st century — no more blue blood and poshos,” as if Meghan was a catalyst who will change an anachronistic institution into one fit for the next generation.

“Even a generation ago, the idea of a prince marrying a mixed-race actress could never be contemplated,” it reflected (incorporating not one, but two very 20th-century words). It went on: “When Prince Charles was Harry’s age, he was expected to marry someone white, blue-blooded and a virgin,” though such virtuous maidens must have been in short supply in the early 1980s.

The paper’s nearest rival, The Daily Mail, was prepared to turn what would have been a major contravention of protocol in the 1980s to a dutiful observance of cultural change. “A bride descended from slaves,” as it called Meghan, has helped the Royals prove “sneering snobs wrong.” In other words, the royals embrace rather than retard change.

The I’s Yasmin Alibhai-Brown was left unmoved, however. “I don’t share the racial optimism,” she confirmed, though without offering a clarification of the meaning of “racial optimism.” “The truth is that Diana’s sons are being used by Charles to appeal to modern Britons … Some conspiracy theories ring true.” Setting aside the provenance of her claims to “truth” (conspiracy theories?), the impression is that Meghan’s role is comparable to that of a dupe: someone who conveniently fills the role of bride and is walking blithely but unknowingly into “a dysfunctional, cold and unnatural family.”

Ethnic chameleon

This seems profoundly insulting to Meghan, a woman who seems securely at ease with her commitments and decisions, as well as her ethnic origins and appears nobody’s fool. “I wasn’t black enough for the black roles,” she concluded early in her acting career, though now she’s able “to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”

On the incidents in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014 and Baltimore in 2015, both involving conflict between police officers and African Americans, Meghan said to the UK edition of Elle: “As a biracial woman, I watch in horror as both side of a culture I define as my own become victims of spin the media.”

In the same article, she described herself as “the ethnic chameleon,” presumably meaning she’s developed the ability to change her ethnic identity to suit different contexts — a capability that should equip her well over the coming years.

Her engagement to Harry will introduce royal family devotees and probably everyone else into a new narrative where human crises, especially those involving racism, will be collected and expressed in a way that demands our attention. Imagine if Meghan were around in the 1990s when the case of Stephen Lawrence was on everyone’s mind.

She isn’t about to stand up and issue polemics at every instance of social injustice, but there is no doubt she will engage. And she now has propriety rights to do so. This may haunt the stodgier members of the royal family as Diana did. But Meghan is a bright spark and will both light up and electrify the royals and the land over which they rule.

I won’t spoil the twist by revealing what Meghan will do next. But she is nobody’s stooge: not the queen’s, not Prince Charles’, not the palace’s. Her zeal for self-examination will extend to British society: She brings not just a new face to the family, but a new perspective.

One of life’s benevolent, capricious breezes has swept her to Britain and even the few curmudgeonly Brits who now resent the apparent loss of “racial purity,” or regard her a sop, will soon have to accept that she is going to become the most fascinating and relevant member of the royals since Diana.
