The economic advisor to Nepal’s president on Sunday (May 12) submitted his resignation, nearly a week after criticising the decision of the government to issue currency notes which depicted the new map of the country with areas in India. Chiranjibi Nepal, who is also the central bank's former governor, while speaking to The Indian Express said that the step to include Indian areas of Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani in the map of Nepal was “unwise”. Meanwhile, speaking with BBC Nepali Service, Nepal called the decision an “irresponsible diversion” and one that made "more problematic comments regarding sovereignty”, as per a joint statement issued by a group of civil society leaders. “I oppose the move as a former Governor of the Rastra Bank, and not as an adviser to the President,” said Nepal, just after the map on the notes was made public on May 4. Also Read: Nepal's Supreme Court orders government to limit Everest climbing permits “Nepal being in dispute with India over certain parts of territory is one thing, but printing in the currency a map that is different from what the international bodies, including two neighbours, have recognised is unwise," he added. The comments of the economic advisor were criticised by the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist's KP Sharma Oli. Nepal's Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that he has spoken to President Ram Chandra Poudel about the comments. The Office of the President issued a press statement in which they confirmed that Nepal's resignation was accepted by President Paudel on Sunday (May 12). President Paudel extended his thanks to economic advisor Nepal for the service provided by him as an economic expert. Nepalese leaders call for the removal of economic advisor Many leaders had appealed for the removal of Nepal from the post, including former chief of Nepal’s anti-graft body Surynath Upadhyay and Sushil Pyakurel, former ambassador to India Nilambar Acharya, adviser to former president Bidya Devi Bhandari. A group of civil society leaders had also demanded Nepal's removal over the remarks. Given that the Office of the President has been silent on the matter, we are forced to consider that Mr Nepal is speaking on behalf of President Ram Chandra Poudel when he describes the government’s decision as being “against international values” and “unwise”," read the statement. "In order to keep the position of the President of the Republic above controversy, we demand an immediate retraction from the Office of the President and the removal of Chiranjeevi Nepal from his responsibilities as advisor," it added. Nepal president's advisor resigns after criticising inclusion of Indian areas in map on new currency

Nepal's economic advisor, Chiranjibi Nepal, recently resigned following controversy surrounding the government's decision to include a disputed map on the new 100-rupee banknotes. This map reflects Nepal's territorial claims in areas currently administered by India. The move has strained relations between the two countries, with India expressing discontent. Civil society groups in Nepal also criticised Mr. Nepal's public comments opposing the map's inclusion, calling them irresponsible and damaging to national interests.

Vladimir Putin is set to be sworn in for his fifth term as Russia's president on Tuesday (May 7) during an inauguration ceremony in Moscow.

Putin, who won 87 per cent of the vote in the March presidential election, will officially begin another six-year term in office at the Kremlin ceremony. Following the inauguration, the current Russian government will resign, making way for a new government approved by the nation's parliament through a constitutional amendment passed in 2020.

According to the Anadolu news agency, Putin will present his choice for prime minister to the Russian State Duma, the country's lower house of parliament, for confirmation.

While the parliament has the authority to accept or decline the nominee, if lawmakers reject the candidate three times, Putin can appoint the prime minister directly without requiring parliamentary approval.

Subsequently, Putin can call for new parliamentary elections and dissolve the current legislature.

Reports from local media suggest that Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, who has overseen economic growth amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and subsequent Western economic sanctions, is likely to be reappointed.

Former United States president Donald Trump on Wednesday (April 10) said that if he again gets elected to the White House, he will not sign a national abortion ban.&nbsp;

With the statement, Trump went back from his promise which he had made as a candidate in 2016.

While standing on a tarmac on Wednesday (April 10) in Atlanta, Trump gave some definitive answers on the issue. When asked if he would sign a national abortion ban once it is passed by Congress, the former president shook his head and said, “No.”

“You wouldn’t sign it?” quizzed the reporter. “No,” Trump said once again.&nbsp;

However, while speaking to the reporters, he said that the ban will quickly be "straightened out". The law passed in Arizona has placed a ban on abortion from conception and it can only be carried out to save a mother's life.

On Monday (April 8), Trump released a lengthy statement which said that the voters and states need to decide how and when abortion should be restricted.

In the statement, which was shared on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump also took credit for the US Supreme Court's historic ruling in 2022 which overturned Roe v Wade.&nbsp;

In 2016, Trump had campaigned on the appointment of justices who will oppose Roe. After becoming the president, he named three conservatives to the court who voted to reverse Roe.

In a not-so-anticipated moment, Guyanese President Irfan Ali went all out questioning the "Western hypocrisy" when a journalist tried to place him on edge on the issue of carbon emissions.

President Ali's interview with BBC journalist Stephen Sackur went viral in which he was questioned about the carbon emission rates of Guyana as it planned to extract gas and oil along its coast.

<h2>'Are you in pockets of those who destroyed environment through industrial revolution?': Guyanese president</h2>

In the viral video clip, the Guyanese president was seen interrupting the journalist's question and asking him if he had the "right to lecture him on climate change" and if he was in the "pockets of those who destroy the environment through the industrial revolution and are now lecturing us".

Countering the query of the journalist that the extraction of oil and gas in Guyana will result in more than two billion metric tonnes of carbon emissions from its coast, President Ali said, "Do you know that Guyana has a forest forever that is the size of England and Scotland combined? A forest that stores 19.5 Gigatons of carbon, a forest that we have kept alive."

After that, the journalist asked him if that gave Guyana the right to extract gas and release emissions.

"Does that give you the right to lecture us on climate change. I am going to lecture you on climate change because we have kept this forest alive. The store's 19.5 gigatons of carbon that you enjoy, that the world enjoys, that you don't pay us for, that you don't value, that you don't see a value in, that the people of Guyana has kept alive," said the president.

"Guess what? We have the lowest deforestation rate in the world. And guess what? Even with our greatest exploration of the oil and gas resource we have now, we will still be, net 0. Guyana will still be net 0 with all our exploration," President Ali added.

The president further questioned the alleged Western hypocrisy and said that those who have caused environmental destruction are now questioning his country.

Indonesia's Prabowo Subianto has been elected as president of the world's third-biggest democracy, the elections commission said Wednesday, decisively beating two rivals who have vowed to file a legal complaint about the vote.

Defence Minister Prabowo and his vice-presidential running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka received more than 96 million votes, commission chairman Hasyim Asy'ari said, roughly 58.6 percent of the total count and enough to secure a first-round majority.

Anies Baswedan secured nearly 41 million votes, or 24.9 per cent of the total count, while Ganjar Pranowo received 27 million votes, more than 16 per cent.

The Vietnamese Communist Party officially accepted&nbsp;the resignation of President Vo Van Thuong, as declared by the government on Wednesday (Mar 20). This development suggests a period of political instability that could potentially undermine foreign investors' trust in the nation. The government stated that Thuong had violated party regulations, resulting in adverse public perception and damaging the Party's, State's, and his personal reputation.

The Central Party Committee, a crucial decision-making body within Vietnam's Communist Party administration, endorsed Thuong's resignation approximately a year following his election.

While the president's role is largely ceremonial, it carries significant political weight as one of the nation's top four positions. Attempts to reach the presidential office for comment on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

The committee's decision precedes an extraordinary session of Vietnam's parliament scheduled for Thursday, where deputies are expected to affirm the party's resolutions.

<h2>Origins of political upheaval</h2>

Although the government statement did not specify Thuong's transgressions, recent leadership changes in the single-party state have been linked to the extensive "blazing furnace" anti-bribery campaign. This campaign, while aimed at combating widespread corruption, has been criticised as a tool for political power struggles. Foreign investors and diplomats have expressed concerns about its impact on decision-making processes in Vietnam, exacerbating an already cumbersome bureaucracy.

Thuong, aged 53, stepped down shortly after Vietnamese authorities announced the arrest of a former provincial head from Quang Ngai province for alleged corruption dating back a decade.

Thuong served as the party chief in the same province during that period. Additionally, he held senior party positions in Ho Chi Minh City, which is grappling with a massive financial scandal currently undergoing a significant trial.

Thuong's close association with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the driving force behind the anti-graft campaign, further underscores the political dynamics at play.

The sudden departure of Thuong raises concerns about political stability and its impact on foreign investment. Recent fluctuations in the Ho Chi Minh City stock exchange and net sales by foreign investors indicate apprehension among investors. While some believe that policy and administrative decisions may slow down further, Vietnam's fundamental stance on key policies is not expected to change drastically. However, repeated leadership changes may erode business sentiment, posing challenges for a country heavily reliant on foreign investment.

United States President Joe Biden on Saturday (March 9) expressed regret over&nbsp;using the term "illegal" while speaking about the suspected killer of Laken Riley during his State of the Union address.&nbsp;

Later, former president and Biden's 2024 GOP rival Donald Trump blasted the immigration policies of the Democrat and held him responsible for the death of Laken Riley, while speaking at a rally attended by the family and friends of a Georgia nursing student.

The US president expressed regret over his comments after he faced criticism from some of his party members for using the term in the context of people who have arrived or are living in the country illegally.

“I shouldn’t have used illegal, it’s undocumented,” said Biden, in an interview with MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart which was recorded in Atlanta.

The comment was made by Biden on Thursday night (Mar 7) while speaking about a bipartisan border security deal which did not go through after Trump opposed it.&nbsp;

Then, Trump ally US Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene shouted at the president to say Laken Riley's name, who was a Georgia woman and was killed last month, further saying that she was killed "by an illegal."

"By an illegal, that's right," responded Biden and asked how many people are being killed by "legals."

Trump, who was in Rome, Georgia, blasted Biden for the comments.

“Joe Biden went on television and apologised for calling Laken’s murderer an illegal," Trump said. “Biden should be apologising for apologising to this killer," he added.

Riley's parents, her sister and friends had joined Trump at his rally. “We share your grief," said Trump, in his remarks.

In his speech, Trump also attacked Biden for mispronouncing Riley’s name during his State of the Union address.

“What Joe Biden has done on our border is a crime against humanity and the people of this nation for which he will never be forgiven,” said Trump, adding that Riley “would be alive today if Joe Biden had not willfully and maliciously eviscerated the borders of the United States and set loose thousands and thousands of dangerous criminals into our country.”

Contrasting his rhetoric with Biden's remark, Trump said, “I say he was an illegal alien. He was an illegal immigrant."&nbsp;

He said that Biden has "no remorse". &nbsp;"He’s got no regret, he’s got no empathy, no compassion, and worst of all, he has no intention of stopping the deadly invasion that stole precious Laken’s beautiful American life,” said Trump.

The Central African nation of Chad descended into chaos and political unrest this past week. The week began on a positive note when the national poll body announced on Tuesday that the presidential election, bringing an end to the three-year Junta rule, will be held on the 6th of May. The very next day, the government blamed an overnight attack on Chad's internal security office on the opposition Socialist Party without Borders or PSF, which is headed by Yaya Dillo. Claiming that several people had been killed, Chad security forces laid siege to the headquarters of the opposition PSF. Dillo, a fierce opponent of Chad's transitional president and his cousin, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, was killed in the army's assault on the opposition party's headquarters. How did this family feud go horribly wrong and what it means for the impoverished nation? Mohammed Saleh brings you the details.

United States President Joe Biden said that his annual medical examination ended well on Wednesday (Feb 28) as he joked about how doctors felt that he looked too young.&nbsp;

This came at a time when there has been increasing scrutiny over his old age as he plans to fight the November elections.

The White House informed that a summary of the test results will be released by the Walter Reed military medical facility outside Washington later.&nbsp;

"They think I look too young," Biden said to the reporters when speaking about the medical exam.

"No, there is nothing different from last year," when the exam results declared him fit for duty, added Biden, while speaking at the White House.&nbsp;

A judge in Haiti responsible for investigating the July 2021&nbsp;assassination of President Jovenel Moïse&nbsp;indicted his widow, Martine Moïse, ex-prime minister Claude Joseph and the former chief of Haiti’s National Police, Léon Charles, among others, in a report released on Monday.

The indictments are expected to further destabilize Haiti as it struggles with a surge in gang violence and recovers from a spate of violent protests demanding the resignation of current Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

Dozens of suspects were indicted in the 122-page report issued by Walther Wesser Voltaire, who is the fifth judge to lead the investigation after previous ones stepped down for various reasons, including fear of being killed.

Charles, who was police chief when&nbsp;Moïse was killed<a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/world/story/haiti-presidential-assassination-mystery-deepens-explained-in-pictures-1827562-2021-07-13" target="_self">&nbsp;</a>and now serves as Haiti’s permanent representative to the Organization of the American States, faces the most serious charges: murder; attempted murder; possession and illegal carrying of weapons; conspiracy against the internal security of the state; and criminal association.

Meanwhile, Joseph and Martine Moïse, who were injured in the attack, are accused of complicity and criminal association.

Meanwhile, Joseph, the former prime minister, shared a statement with The Associated Press accusing Henry of “undermining” the investigation and benefitting from the president’s death.

“Henry... is weaponizing the Haitian justice system, prosecuting political opponents like me. It’s a classic coup d’état,” Joseph said. “They failed to kill me and Martine Moïse on July 7th 2021, now they are using the Haitian justice system to advance their Machiavellian agenda.”

Joseph again called on Henry to resign and noted that while he was still prime minister, he invited the FBI to help local authorities investigate the killing and wrote the UN and OAS for help.

“I won’t stop my fight. Justice must be served,” he said.

In his report, the judge noted that the former secretary general of the National Palace, Lyonel Valbrun, told authorities that he received “strong pressure” from Martine Moïse to put the president’s office at the disposal of Joseph because he needed it to “organize a council of ministers.”

Valbrun also said that two days before her husband was killed, Martine Moïse visited the National Palace and spent nearly five hours, from 10 pm to 3 am, removing “a bunch of things.”

He said that two days after Jovenel Moïse was slain, Martine Moïse called to tell him that, “Jovenel didn’t do anything for us. You have to open the office. The president told Ti Klod to create a council of ministers; he will hold elections in three months, so I can become president, now we will have power.”

While the document did not identify Ti Klod, the former prime minister, Claude Joseph, is known by that name.

The judge also stated in his report that Martine Moïse “suggested” she took refuge under the marital bed to protect herself from the attackers, but he noted that authorities at the scene found that not “even a giant ratâ€æwhose size measures between 35 and 45 centimeters” could fit under the bed.

The judge said the former first lady’s statements were “so tainted with contradictions that they leave something to be desired and discredit her.”

Others who face charges including murder are Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a Haitian-American pastor who visualized himself as Haiti’s next president and said he thought Moïse was only going to be arrested; Joseph Vincent, a Haitian-American and former informant for the US Drug Enforcement Administration; Dimitri Hérard, presidential security chief; John Joël Joseph, a former Haitian senator; and Windelle Coq, a Haitian judge whom authorities say is a fugitive.

Sanon, Vincent and Joseph were extradited to the US, where a total of 11 suspects face federal charges in the slaying of Haiti’s president. At least three of them have already been sentenced.

Meanwhile, more than 40 suspects are languishing in prison in Haiti awaiting trial, although it was not immediately clear how quickly one would be held following Monday’s indictments. Among them are 20 former Colombian soldiers.

Milena Carmona, wife of Jheyner Alberto Carmona Fl³rez, told The Associated Press that he is innocent.

“What’s happening is that this crime is a conspiracy of great magnitude in which powerful people are behind the scenes running everything, and that’s why they’re not given freedom,” she said of the former soldiers.

US prosecutors have described it as a plot hatched in both Haiti and&nbsp;Florida<a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/world/story/us-man-pleads-guilty-case-linked-2021-assassination-of-ex-haiti-president-2500383-2024-02-11" target="_self">&nbsp;</a>to hire mercenaries to kidnap or kill Moïse, who was 53 when he was slain at his private home near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

The attack began late July 6 and ended July 7, according to witnesses.

Martine Moïse and others who were interrogated said they heard heavy gunfire starting around 1 a.m. that lasted between 30 to 45 minutes before armed men burst into the bedroom of the presidential couple.

Moïse said she was lying on the ground when she heard the attackers yell, “That’s not it! That’s not it! That’s not it!”

She said the suspects made a video call to identify the exact location of what they were searching as they killed the president. She added that she was face down when the suspects tilted her head and tugged on one of her toes “to ensure that she wasn’t alive.”

Once they left, Moïse said she dragged herself on the ground and whispered to her husband that she was going to try and go to the hospital.

“That’s when she noticed that the president was dead and that his left eye had been removed from the socket,” the report stated.

Moïse said a group of about 30 to 50 police officers were supposed to guard the presidential residence, but the judge noted that only a handful of officers were present that night. One officer told the judge that he heard explosions and a voice through a megaphone saying, “Do not shoot! It’s a DEA operation! US Army! We know how many officers are inside. Exit with two hands lowered.”

Another officer said the head of security of the first lady found her “in critical condition” surrounded by her two children. He said he also saw an undetermined number of people coming out of the president’s residence “with briefcases and several envelopes in their possession.”

The report quotes Inspector General André Vladimir Paraison saying that the president called him at 1:46 a.m. and told him, “Paraison! Man, hurry up! I’m in trouble! Come quickly and save my life.” He said he encountered heavily armed men and couldn’t access the residence immediately.

Officers at the scene said they found cars, windows and doors at the president’s private home riddled with bullet holes, along with surveillance cameras cut off and a broken lock on the double-wooden door leading to the presidential bedroom.

The judge said some police officers at the residence were disarmed and handcuffed, while others “had time to throw themselves down a ravine” for safety. In addition, the police officer overseeing presidential security was accused of receiving $80,000 to bribe certain officers “to remain inactive” during the assassination, according to the report.

The judge noted how “none of the police providing security to the head of state was in danger. Unfortunately, the head of state was assassinated with ease.”
