<p>Amid fasting over the "washout" of the Budget session of Parliament, PM Modi today inaugurated the&nbsp;DefExpo at Mahabalipuram even as&nbsp;political parties staged protests&nbsp;over the Cauvery issue on Thursday.</p>

<p>Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi leader Velmurugan and other protesters were detained by police as they were protesting outside the airport when PM Modi arrived in Chennai.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Cauvery issue has become the focal point of attention in the city even hitting the cricket IPL with the BCCI on Wednesday deciding to shift the venue for the Chennai matches due to the ongoing Cauvery agitation.</p>

<p>"Over 40 countries have sent their delegation to the event,"&nbsp;PM Modi said at the event, adding that India has one of the largest peacekeeping forces in the world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Commitment to peace is a commitment to our people,"&nbsp;the PM said while speaking at the event. "It is wonderful to see 500 firms at this Expo," the PM said.</p>

<p>"We are taking all steps to equip our forces,"&nbsp;he added.</p>

<p>"We have increased FDI in defence to 49 per cent,"&nbsp;Modi said at the event, adding that India is committed to building defence corridors.</p>

<p>"The defence corridors will be made in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu,"&nbsp;PM Modi&nbsp;informed. "Make in India will boost innovation," he said.</p>

<p>"We encourage defence-based startups, we want to transform not tinker," PM Modi declared.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking at the DefExpo,&nbsp;Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said&nbsp;50 per cent of Expo manufacturers consisted of Indians, most of them small and medium industries.</p>

<p>According to the Defence Ministry, over 670 defence firms including 154 foreign manufacturers are participating in the exhibition of weapons and military hardware.</p>

<p>It is being attended by official delegations from over 47 countries including the US, the UK, Russia, Afghanistan and Sweden, Finland, Italy, Madagascar, Myanmar, Nepal, Portugal, Seychelles and Vietnam.</p>

<p>Heavy security measures have been put in&nbsp;place in the city over&nbsp;PM Modi's visit.&nbsp;There were reports of protests near the airport in Alandur area.</p>

<p>As Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Chennai, actor Kamal Haasan released a video on Twitter where he sought justice for Tamil Nadu on the Cauvery issue.</p>

8.5 lakh toilets built in Bihar in one week: PM Modi in Champaran

<p>Nearly five days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bijapur, an exchange of fire took place between Maoists and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel here on Monday.</p>

<p>The skirmish took place on Monday morning in Mahadeoghat area on the Bijapur-Bhopalpatnam road when a team of 85th battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was out on an area-domination operation, Bijapur Superintendent of Police Mohit Garg said.</p>

<p>As per reports, the CRPF troops, along with Chhattisgarh police, were out for area domination when two improvised explosive devices (IED) blasts occurred, followed by a brief exchange of fire.</p>

<p>However, no loss of life or casualty was reported.</p>

<p>Today's exchange of fire comes less than ten days after a security force personnel was injured in an IED blast here in Chinnakorepal village of the district.</p>

<p>As per statistics, as many as 47 security personnel have been killed in Chhattisgarh's Naxal-affected Bastar region since 2005.</p>

<p>Among the major incidents in which insurgents targeted the anti-mine vehicles include the killing of 22 CRPF jawans in September 2005 in Bijapur district, when Naxalites had reportedly used 200 kg of IED to blow up the vehicle.</p>

<p>On a related note, Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit Bijapur on April 14.</p>

<p>Pegging his confidence on opposition unity, Gandhi said far from the BJP winning the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, even Modi might lose from Varanasi if his party, the SP and the BSP were united against him.</p>

<p>Exuding confidence over roping in and managing alliance partners despite their varied personal and regional aspirations, Gandhi predicted for the current ruling dispensation, a "collapse" not "seen in many years."</p>

<p>"Frankly, I don't see the BJP winning the next election, so in 2019 we will go back to the normal, I sense," he said in reply to a question on "Dalit anger."</p>

<p>"...because there are two basic things, once opposition unity goes above a certain level, it becomes impossible to win elections. Now the opposition unity has gone to a point. It's simple," Gandhi said at an informal media interaction.</p>

<p>Pointing at the opposition unity efforts in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and by the DMK, the Trinamool Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party in Tamil Nadu, Gandhi asked, "Where are they (BJP) going to win seats?"</p>

<p>And in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab. We will take it over."</p>

<p>"You are going to see a collapse of the style you haven't seen in many years," he said.</p>

<p>Gandhi was on the sixth leg of campaigning as part of the 'Janashirvada Yatra' ahead of the May 12 polls in Karnataka.</p>

<p>Responding to a question doubting the forging of opposition unity amid varied aspirations of each party and their leaders, Gandhi expressed confidence of overcoming it.</p>

<p>"We will manage it. We in the Congress know how to carry people, we are not egotistical people, we don't crush people and we don't destroy people's lives, so we will manage it," he said.</p>

<p>The basic thing is how to get the country out of the "mess that Mr Modi and RSS has put it in," he said.</p>

<p>The Congress president also ruled out the emergence of any third front.</p>

<p>Accusing the RSS of generating anger and hatred, Gandhi alleged that people are being killed for what they are saying and that needs to be put to an end.</p>

<p>"The natural sort of political environment where there is a little bit of acrimony, but not hatred, needs to be restored," he said.</p>

<p>Stating that Modi had a "very good" opportunity after the 2014 election, Gandhi said a lot could have been done for the country.</p>

<p>Terming as "funny" the BJP's confidence of breaking the opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh and claiming that he understands UP politics, Rahul said when the three parties (SP, BSP and Congress) come together, "BJP will win only two seats, that too with luck.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said even Modi may lose if he stands from Varanasi and the three parties were united against him.</p>

<p>"In fact, I challenge him to stand with three parties united," he added.</p>

Another Dalit BJP MP writes to PM, accuses Centre of ignoring Dalits

<p>Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu claimed on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approached him for an alliance with the BJP during the 2014 general election.</p>

<p>The TDP chief said that he allied with the BJP for the sake of the interests of Andhra Pradesh.</p>

<p>"Even during the 2014 general election, we didn't try for an alliance with the BJP. Modi himself came to us, said that BJP is sympathetic towards Andhra, let us work together for the development of the state. Then only I allied with them, just for the sake of the state's interests," Chandrababu Naidu said.</p>

<p>Asked whether the families of the 39 Indians who died in Iraq would be provided jobs or compensation, Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh said yesterday that the issue was not like distributing biscuits.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He had said,&nbsp;"The issue is not about distributing biscuits, it is about the life of people, did you understand".</p>

<p>VK Singh had brought back the bodies of 38 Indians who were killed yesterday.</p>

<p>The Indians had gone missing when the Islamic State overran Mosul in 2014. The Indian government launched a massive search operation along with the Iraqi government.</p>

<p>Foreign Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj had announced in Parliament last month that the Indian government had found the mortal remains of the Indians.</p>

<p>The Indian government yesterday amended the guidelines for accreditation of journalists in a bid to deal with the rise of "fake news".</p>

<p>The move came in the wake of the Malaysian Parliament pushing for a law that made 'fake news' punishable with a maximum six-year jail term.</p>

<p>Smriti Irani-led Information & Broadcasting ministry proposed penalties ranging from suspension to cancellation of accreditation of journalists found guilty of reporting “fake news”.</p>

<p>The guidelines were set to apply to journalists accredited by the Government of India, thereby indicating government's plan to deal with non-accredited journalists engaging in 'fake news' through the I&B ministry.</p>

<p>“While examining the requests seeking accreditation, the regulatory agencies will examine whether the `Norms of Journalistic Conduct’ and `Code of Ethics and Broadcasting Standards’ prescribed by the PCI and NBA respectively are adhered to by the journalists as part of their functioning. It would be obligatory for journalists to abide by these guidelines,” the Information & Broadcasting ministry said in its release.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to unpublished government data, the Modi government spent as much as rupees 35 lakh to buy and install air purifiers for Prime Minister&#39;s offices and other federal departments and government agencies like NITI Aayog between the year 2014 and 2017.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The country has been battling escalating air pollution over the past years with alarming levels in Delhi among other metro cities. In the wake of worsening air quality, as many as 140 air purifiers were purchased for Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s offices, Reuters reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Reuters, in the last three years, the home ministry spent about $20,000 (Rs 13 lakh) to buy 44 air purifiers; 25 of which were allocated for PM Modi&#39;s parliament house offices.</p>

<p>Reuters filed a right to information plea to which NITI Aayog responded stating that the devices were &quot;issued to officers at the level of joint secretary and equivalent and above, as per their requests&quot;.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Traditionally, government officials cannot really make demands for such devices, there is no federal policy allowing the same until the demands come from bureaucrats.</p>

<p>Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced an allocation of $177 million to curb air pollution resulting from crop residue burning in this year&#39;s budget. A scheme for pollution control was also outlined.&nbsp;</p>

<p>UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi launched a spirited defence of much beleaguered Congress Party and accused the Modi government of doing everything to destroy the Congress Party.</p>

<p>Sonia said that despite the onslaught, Congress is not going to back down. Sonia said that present dispensation tinkering with constitutional propriety and not following the Parliamentary traditions.</p>

<p>She also reminded her colleagues that Indira Gandhi&rsquo;s victory in Chikmanglur by election paved the way to success as she won the 1980 Lok Sabha elections with a solid majority.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Though she did not mention Gorakhpur and Phoolpur bye-elections, the message was not missed. Strong words like &quot;draamebazi&quot; were used by Sonia Gandhi to target the government. She even accused the government of the day to weaken projects started by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.</p>

<p>The Congress Party&rsquo;s political resolution also echoed the similar sentiment. Out of 12 pages, one and a half were dedicated to RSS-BJP. The resolution accused the government of systematically attacking the foundational principles of the constitution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Political resolution also charged the government subverting educational, cultural and historical institutions facilitating their capture by BJP&rsquo;s ideological affiliates. The draft also accused the government of misusing the office Governors in the state.</p>

<p>The resolution also stated that Congress remains opposed to simultaneous elections as it goes against the grain of the Constitution.&nbsp;Surprisingly, even the media made way for the Political Resolution.</p>

<p>The plenary also devoted an hour to media which was discussed by Randeep Surjewala, Kumar Ketkar, Divya Spandana, Rajeev Gowda, Sushmita Sen and Mrinal Pande. The resolution said that government is muzzling the voice of the media whereas the panelist during plenary debated the issue of neutrality and media.</p>

Youth does not see future with PM Modi: Rahul Gandhi at Plenary session

<p>Coming down hard on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi said on Saturday that the ruling dispensation was undoing the work of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government.</p>

<p>&quot;The Modi government is not interested in addressing the needs of the poor. They are just ignoring and weakening the welfare programmes that we implemented it when we were in power,&quot; Sonia said while addressing party leaders at the 84th Congress plenary session, being held here.</p>

<p>&quot;In the last four years, this arrogant (Modi) government has left no stone unturned to destroy Congress. But Congress has never cowered down and it will never cower down,&quot; she asserted.</p>

<p>The former Congress president continued her tirade against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government claiming that her party was &quot;exposing fraud and corruption&quot; by the Modi government using proof.</p>

<p>Commenting on the rise of communal violence and lawlessness in the country under the BJP government, Sonia added, &quot;Wherever there is a non-Congress government, our friends are taking a stand against anarchy and violence in different places. They are continuing with their work and braving all of it. It is the Congress party which takes stand against injustice and raises its voice against it (violence).&quot;</p>

<p>Vowing to make India free from political vendetta and corruption, Sonia underscored that it was important for all to address the challenges and called for efforts to fulfill a &#39;corruption-free India&#39; under the leadership of her son and Congress President Rahul Gandhi respectively.</p>
