A US Air National Guard C-130 transport aeroplane crashed on Wednesday not far from the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Georgia, officials said.

Television footage of the crash site showed clouds of black smoke billowing into the air with fire equipment arriving at the scene.

The US National Guard said that one of its C-130 transport planes had crashed in Georgia. A spokesman could not give the number of personnel aboard and said an assessment was under way.

Abby Murphy, a spokeswoman for the Chatham County Emergency Management Agency, said that a military aircraft had gone down on the outskirts of Savannah, about 175 miles (280 km) southeast of Atlanta, but had no further information.

The Savannah Morning News newspaper reported that the plane was stationed at the National Guard’s 165th Aircraft Wing in Savannah. An email and phone call to the 165th Aircraft Wing were not immediately returned.

The Savannah airport said on Twitter that it was “assisting local agencies with an aircraft incident off property. No impacts to airport operations at this time.”&nbsp

An Iranian passenger plane has crashed into the country&#39;s Zagros mountains with more than 50 people on board, the head of the country&#39;s emergency services told local media on Sunday.&nbsp;

Mojtaba Khaledi, spokesman for the national emergency services, told the semi-official ISNA news agency that a helicopter had been sent to the area.

Ten Americans flying from a vacation hotspot on Costa Rica&#39;s tropical Pacific coast died Sunday when the small plane they had just boarded crashed and burst into flames shortly after take-off, officials in the country said.

The cause of the crash was not known.

Solis said in his statement that his government &quot;gives its commitment to do everything necessary to work with the relatives of the victims to give them what they need in this difficult moment.&quot;

He said emergency services launched into action when the alarm over the crash was given at 12:13 pm (1813 GMT).&nbsp;

The process of recovering the bodies continued into the night in Costa Rica.

The incident forced the temporary closure of Ataturk International Airport and while it later reopened passengers were still experiencing delays.

Istanbul governor Vasip Sahin said the Cessna Citation plane had two pilots on board, one crew member and one passenger, all Turkish citizens.

&quot;Their condition is good, there were no fatalities and they are undergoing treatment at the hospital,&quot; he said, quoted by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

&quot;It has affected flights for a short time but now it has been returning to normal,&quot; he added.

Sahin said that the plane sped off the runway and caught fire but its occupants were able to climb out of the aircraft themselves.

The chairman of Turkey&#39;s flag carrier Turkish Airlines Bilal Eksi wrote on Twitter that traffic resumed with a single runway in operation and now both were being used.

The airport&#39;s website showed some delays continuing, in particular for incoming flights.

Air traffic has grown exponentially in Turkey in the last years and the airport is operating at full capacity.
