The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).&nbsp;Peru’s National Civil Defense Institute said in a statement the total number of people missing is still unknown.&nbsp;Several buildings collapsed or suffered structural damage as the epicenter was at a shallow depth and many houses in that area are made of adobe or a wood, cane and mud blend called “quincha."&nbsp;The agricultural region of Chongo Bajo, about 300 kilometers (180 miles) east of Lima, was amongst the worst affected areas.&nbsp;“Forty-eight houses were destroyed and 300 people were left homeless,” said the director of the National Civil Defense Institute.&nbsp;

The USGS said the tremor hit 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) from Atiquipa district.&nbsp;

The quake was felt in Lima and a large part of the southern and central coast of Peru.

The mayor of Yauca, Juan Aranguren, told local media that walls came down in his town.

A major highway running through the area also suffered cracks, he said.&nbsp;

"The children were crying, the earthquake was felt strongly," said a villager from the area.&nbsp;

Speaking to RPP radio, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen: "I want to convey tranquility. The earthquake has passed, we are making the first evaluations, and so far there are no fatalities to lament."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre had earlier said "hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts" but later said the threat had passed.&nbsp;

Earthquake of magnitude 6.3 strikes off southern Peru

A strong 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck a southern city in Peru on Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey.

So far, there are no reports of casualties and damages.

The quake struck around 7.02 am local time in the Tirapata region and was centred 8.1 miles (13km) east-southeast of Azangaro.

According to experts, the quake was fairly deep at around 135.3 miles (217.8km) beneath the surface.

The US Tsunami Warning System said no tsunami warning had been issued.

Earlier, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) estimated the quake at magnitude 7.

The earthquake swayed a few buildings in La Paz, the capital of neighbouring Bolivia, as well as in Peruvian cities such as Arequipa, Tacna and Cusco, according to local reports.

The epicentre&nbsp;was located 50 kilometres&nbsp;(31 miles) north of the city of Moyobamba at a depth of 114 kilometres. It occurred at 1008 GMT, the monitor said.&nbsp; 
 
There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties. 
 
According to the USGS map, the quake epicentre&nbsp;is located on the eastern slope of the Andes, where the mountain range meets the Amazon rainforest.
