<p>One famed school, Salgueiro, will tell the story of the Yanomami Indigenous people, who are suffering a humanitarian emergency blamed on illegal gold mining in the Amazon rainforest.</p>

<p>Their plight reached crisis level under far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro. But his successor, veteran leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has struggled to reverse the unfolding tragedy.</p>

<p>"The samba school parades continue to be a place for Brazil to self-reflect," says anthropologist Mauro Cordeiro.</p>

<p>Not that there isn't plenty of room for silliness and fun: the biggest hit single of the 2024 parades is a light-hearted samba singing the praises of the cashew fruit.</p>

<p>They are also facing an outbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever, which has killed some 50 people. Rio declared a public-health emergency Monday, and organizers plan to distribute mosquito repellent at the Sambadrome.</p>

<p>None of that is expected to break the magic of carnival, or hold back the samba schools -- institutions rooted in poor neighborhoods that revel in putting Rio's marginalized masses at the center of attention for two nights.</p>

<p>One is the iconic Mangueira, named for the "favela," or slum, where it was born 96 years ago, a stone's throw from the famed Maracana football stadium.</p>

<p>This year, the pink and green-sporting school will pay tribute to samba star Alcione to mark the 50th year of her career.</p>

<p>The multi-platinum singer co-founded Mangueira's youth program 36 years ago.</p>

<p>Pakistan's former human rights minister and former prime minister Imran Khan's close aide Shireen Mazari on Tuesday resigned from the party and she announced her shocking retirement from active politics after she was arrested by the police over the recent violence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;72-year-old Mazari made the announcement after she was released following her fourth arrest since May 12 when she was picked up by the police from her residence and sent to jail. Mazari had served as the minister for human rights from 2018 to 2022, under the government of Imran Khan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking at a press conference, &nbsp;she criticised the violence that broke out after Khan was arrested on May 9, adding that a similar undertaking was given by her in the Islamabad High Court.</p>

<p>"Not only the May 9 and 10 violence, but I’ve always condemned every kind of violence especially against state institutions and symbols like the General Headquarters, Supreme Court and Parliament,” she stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mazari then announced that she has resigned from Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and is also quitting active politics, saying that the arrest had an adverse effect on her health as well as the family.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"From today, I’m not part of PTI or any active party because first [for me are] my family, my mother and kids,” she stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Civil society, which included journalists, expressed disappointment at her decision and Geo News anchor Hamid Mir called her retirement a "huge loss" for the country's human rights activism and democracy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Political analyst Mosharraf Zaidi stated the development was “an absolute disgrace for the government, the military and the country at large".&nbsp;</p>

Pakistan's former human rights minister and former prime minister Imran Khan's close aide Shireen Mazari on Tuesday resigned from the party and she announced her shocking retirement from active politics after she was arrested by the police over the recent violence. 72-year-old Mazari made the announcement after she was released following her fourth arrest since May 12 when she was picked up by the police from her residence and sent to jail. Mazari had served as the minister for human rights from 2018 to 2022, under the government of Imran Khan. Speaking at a press conference, she criticised the violence that broke out after Khan was arrested on May 9, adding that a similar undertaking was given by her in the Islamabad High Court. "Not only the May 9 and 10 violence, but I’ve always condemned every kind of violence especially against state institutions and symbols like the General Headquarters, Supreme Court and Parliament,” she stated. Mazari then announced that she has resigned from Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and is also quitting active politics, saying that the arrest had an adverse effect on her health as well as the family. <p>In a press release, Ocean Springs Police Capt Ryan LeMaire confirmed that the assailant shot at seven people at The Scratch Kitchen on Government Street.</p>

<p>The surviving victims were shifted to area hospitals where they received treatment, said LeMaire. The media reports did not specify how badly the people were injured.</p>

<p>The man who lost his life in the shootout was identified by the police as Chase Harmon, 19, of Pascagoula.</p>
