Unions representing workers at Paris' airports said Monday (Jul 8) they had called for a strike the week before the Paris Olympics over a dispute about bonuses for staff.

The CGT, CFDT, FO and UNSA unions called the strike on July 17 -- nine days before the start of the Paris Games -- to demand that all staff receive an Olympics bonus, denouncing "unilateral decisions from the chief executive to pay a bonus to only some personnel."

Unions at state-controlled Groupe ADP, which runs Paris' main airports Charles de Gaulle and Orly, had previously called for a strike on May 19, which did not cause major disruption.&nbsp;

The two airports will be the main gateway into France for foreign visitors to the Olympics, with up to 350,000 people a day expected to transit there during the Games, as well as most athletes and their equipment.

Airport worker unions in France announce strike week before Paris Olympics

Australia will be sending their largest ever team of track and field athletes to an overseas&nbsp;Olympics&nbsp;in Paris later this month with the 75-strong squad taking the overall delegation of competitors to a final 460. The overall delegation is the second largest for a Games since Australia hosted in Sydney, 16 athletes fewer than represented the country and won 17 gold medals at the Tokyo&nbsp;Olympics&nbsp;three years ago.

"The athletics team is the largest of any sport and they will contribute greatly to the positive environment of the broader team," Chef de Mission Anna Meares said in a statement. "Today's announcement finalises our Australian Olympic team at 460 athletes -- I am so excited for Australians to see this team represent them with pride and determination in under three weeks' time."

World champion pole vaulter Nina Kennedy and two Tokyo bronze medallists, decathlete Ash Moloney and javelin thrower Kelsey-Lee Barber, headline the track and field squad to which 55 athletes were added on Monday.

"I have a very clear definition of what success means to me, and that is being able to walk away from the Olympic final knowing I've done everything I possibly could have," said Kennedy. "If that wins a gold medal, amazing, and if it doesn't then I can walk away with no regrets."

Barber will form part of three-strong entry for the women's javelin with Mackenzie Little, who won bronze at last year's world championships, and 41-year-old Kathryn Mitchell, who will be appearing at her fourth Games.

Australia will send men's and women's 4x100 metres relay squads to Paris for the first time since the 2000 Games on home soil in Sydney and compete in 39 of the 48 athletics events. The women's sprint relay team will feature Torrie Lewis, the teenager who beat Sha'carri Richardson and the rest of a strong field to win the 200m on her Diamond League debut in Xiamen.

"After having such an amazing year getting the official selection is just a relief," the 19-year-old said. "I've always thought I could make an individual event, but actually getting the call is so exciting."

Paris Olympics: Athletics squad takes Australia's team up to 460

The water quality of the Seine has improved, test results showed on Thursday, three weeks ahead of the start of the Paris Olympics when the river is set to host outdoor swimming events.

Results published by the Paris mayor's office showed that E.Coli bacteria levels at an Olympics swimming spot in central Paris had fallen to within acceptable limits for four days in a row following warm and sunny weather in the French capital.&nbsp;

"This positive development is a consequence of the return of sunshine and warmth as well as the effects of the work done as part of the strategy to improve the quality of the Seine's waters," a statement from the mayor's office said.&nbsp;

The period covered June 24-July 2.

The previous week, levels of E.Coli -- a bacteria indicating the presence of faecal matter -- had been above the upper limits used by sports federations every day at the Alexandre III bridge location in central Paris, which is set to be the jumping-off point for the swimming.

At one point, E.Coli levels were 10 times the upper limit of 1,000&nbsp;colony-forming units per 100 millilitres (cfu/ml), with heavy rain over the previous two months leading to fears for the Olympic events.

The Seine is set to be used for the swimming leg of the triathlon on July 30-31 and August 5, as well as the open-water swimming on August 8-9.

The readings for enterococci bacteria last week -- a second key measurement of water quality -- also improved markedly and were within acceptable limits every day at the Alexandre III bridge.&nbsp;

French authorities have spent 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in the last decade trying to clean up the river by improving the Paris sewerage system, as well as building new water treatment and storage facilities.

But major storms still overwhelm the capital's waste water network, some of which date back to the 19th century, leading to discharges of untreated sewage directly into the river.

The health of the athletes could be at risk during the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Paris as the French capital could witness extreme heatwaves. Set to begin on 26 July 2024, it is reported that temperatures during the Paris Games could be more than 3 degree Celsius than the average, which could result in adverse effects on the health of athletes. European summer will be at its peak when the Olympic Games and the Paralympics Games take place in July and August.

<h2>Paris to break heat record?</h2>

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak), experienced the hottest games so far in history. However, according to a report by CBC, Paris could break that record as conditions will be hotter in Europe in July and August. Heat waves have been increasing in frequency and intensity in Paris. The "urban heat island effect," whereby urban areas tend to be warmer than rural areas, has only exacerbated the issue in the Paris region.

In 2019, Paris experienced its hottest summer with temperatures reaching 42 degrees Celsius. In recent years, the frequency of heatwaves has increased which has led to athletes re-thinking their participation in the Olympics. While there have been no particular cases of athletes withdrawing due to heatwaves, the authorities could be at a stretch as a huge number of international audiences will be in Paris for the Olympics.

The report further adds that&nbsp;in 2023, France recorded more than 5000 deaths due to the scorching heat. If the trend continues this year, fans could turn their backs on the Paris Olympics as health safety will be the first preference.

The Tokyo Olympics had athletes vomiting and even fainting at the finish line with almost one in every 100 athletes suffering from a heat-related illness. The rise in not only temperatures but also in humidity adds to the risk of heat stroke.

Plans have been put forth by organisers to schedule outdoor events early morning or evening&nbsp;whenever possible.&nbsp;There are contingency plans in place to reschedule events depending on heat and humidity levels each day.

Olympics 2024: Athletes at risk as Paris likely to experience record-breaking heat during Summer Games

India’s Neeraj Chopra has kickstarted his preparations for the upcoming Paris Olympics with a gold medal in the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland on Tuesday (June 18). Neeraj, defending Olympic champion, bagged a highest throw of 85.97 metres to win the gold medal and will now have his eyes set on the Olympics which start in little over a month in Paris. Interestingly, former world champion Anderson Peters finished fourth with 82.58m and was out of podium spots.

<h2>Neeraj Chopra bags gold</h2>

Having missed the second part of last season, Neeraj will have his eyes set on the big prize of the Olympics yet again. In his six throws, the Indian bagged throws of 83.62m and 83.45m in his first two attempts before amassing his best of 85.97 on the third attempt. His next three throws saw Neeraj end up with a foul on the fifth attempt while the rest two ended up a little short of 83m. However, the Indian golden boy had a look of frustration when he completed his six attempts, considering he was no way near his personal best.

Despite being the Olympic champion, Neeraj is yet to hit 90m in his stellar career with near rivals including Arshad Nadeem and Anderson Peters already in full swing.

To prepare for the Paavo Nurmi Games, Neeraj had skipped the Ostrava Golden Spike with an adductor muscle niggle. He was given a tough fight in the early stage with Finland’s Oliver Helander taking an early lead, however, the 26-year-old&nbsp;recovered to take a comfortable lead and win the gold medal.

Neeraj Chopra bags gold Having missed the second part of last season, Neeraj will have his eyes set on the big prize of the Olympics yet again. American swimmer Gretchen Walsh has broken the 100-metre butterfly world record at the U.S. Olympic trials semifinals on Saturday (June 15) ahead of the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024.

Walsh recorded a time of 55.18 seconds, going past Swedish Sarah Sjöström’s 55.48 seconds world record from Rio Olympics 2016.

“I've spent a lot of training focusing on the 100 fly specifically,” she said on Saturday.

“So, to have it translate into the real pool, some would say, really goes to show that [training] is paying off,” Walsh added.

According to news outlet NBC, this is also the first time a world record has been broken at the U.S. Olympic trials since legendary Michael Phelps set new record for 200 metre individual medley back in 2008.

“I did not know that I was gonna go 55.1 and break the world record,” Walsh said. “It doesn't feel real.”

Walsh is a junior at university of Virginia where she rose to fame with her performance but the pools were 25-yard long compared to internationally accepted 50-yard.

Walsh had acknowledged in November last year that "everyone always says I’m just a bathtub swimmer.”

On Saturday, she conceded that 50-yard pools are a 'different beast for her.'&nbsp;

The swimmer, however, said last month that the university training program was 'flipped on its head' after the NCAA Championship and that the new regimen was “a little scary for me at first because I really do just rely on my underwaters when I do short-course."

"I feel like I've definitely improved with my actual swimming,” she said after breaking the world record on Saturday.

Walsh will now compete for a place in the Paris Olympic team during the U.S. trial's 100m butterfly final against previous American record holder Torri Huske and 2021 Olympic medalist Regan Smith. Only two of the three can make the team for the upcoming Olympics.

A total of 14 Russian and 11 Belarusian athletes were included on Saturday by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on an initial list of "Individual Neutral Athletes" (AINs) eligible to compete in the Paris Games.&nbsp;

The athletes had to qualify for the Games and pass a double check, first by the international sports federations and then by the IOC, to prove they did not actively support the war in Ukraine or have any links with their countries' armies.&nbsp;

The athletes named on Saturday compete in four disciplines.

Sixteen are wrestlers. The IOC has also approved two weightlifters, three trampoline gymnasts and four road cyclists, including Aleksandr Vlasov, who was fourth in the 2021 Giro.&nbsp;

"Our cyclists passed the 'test'," Vyacheslav Ekimov, the President of the Russian Cycling Federation told Russia's state-run TASS news agency.

"The IOC allowed us to the Olympics, although I did not expect a different development. As for Vlasov, despite all his past statements, I think he will participate in the Olympics. And with great pleasure." Ekimov said.

The President of the Russian Trampolining Federation, Nikolai Makarov told TASS he was not entirely happy.

"The fact that the IOC has decided to admit Angela Bladtseva to the Olympics is very good news," he said.

"But I don't understand why another one of our contenders for the only ticket - Yana Lebedeva - is not on the list. I hope that her name will be on the next list."

Saturday's IOC statement also listed taekwondo, but that section included no names.&nbsp;

"It is absolutely true - none of our taekwondists will perform at the Olympic Games in Paris," Vadim Ivanov, Russia's taekwondo head coach told the state-run RIA Novosti news agency.

After initially banning the two countries' athletes from world sport following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the IOC adjusted their regulations to allow their participation, under a neutral banner, subject to strict conditions and excluding team events.&nbsp;

Last March, the IOC said it was expecting 36 Russians and 22 Belarussians at the Paris Games "according to the most probable scenario", and a "maximum" of 55 and 28 respectively.&nbsp;

That would be far fewer than the 330 Russians and 104 Belarusians that took part in the last Games in Tokyo in 2021.

The IOC will update its list as the final qualifying results come in.

There will be no track and field athletes. World Athletics has banned all Russians and Belarusians.

Other sports have reinstated them so late that their presence is uncertain.&nbsp;

<h2>- Opening ceremony -</h2>

On Friday, Yuliya Efimova, who has three Olympic breaststroke medals, became the first Russian swimmer to be granted neutral status for the Games although she has not yet swum a qualifying time. She also said she did not yet have a visa to travel to France.

While Moscow has finally decided not to boycott the Paris Games, some athletes may opt to. Russia's gymnasts have said they will refuse to take part.

The neutral athletes will neither take part in the opening ceremony on the Seine nor appear in the official medal table.&nbsp;

In March, the IOC awarded them a dedicated flag, stamped with the letters "AIN" on an apple-green background, as well as a short composition without words, which will serve as their anthem if they win an Olympic title.&nbsp;

At the same time, the IOC &nbsp;set up the Individual Neutral Athlete Eligibility Review Panel (AINERP) to help decide which athletes to invite.

The expert panel "has been able to benefit from new information from various sources, in particular official lists of athletes affiliated to sports clubs of the armed and security forces, published on official websites in Russia and Belarus", said the IOC.&nbsp;

Nadal has been struggling with injuries for the last two years which has limited his game time. Since January last year, he has only played 15 matches as a hip injury and muscle tear have kept him in rehabilitation.&nbsp;

He returned to action on his favourite surface - clay, playing at Barcelona and Madrid Masters before also giving a go in Rome. After decent outings in the two tournaments, Nadal arrived in Roland Garros to face Alexander Zverev in the first round.&nbsp;

Despite giving a good account of himself, Nadal went down in straight sets against the German. After the match, Nadal said he was&nbsp;'100 per cent sure' if he would be returning to the French Open next year.&nbsp;

Andy Murray may opt out of challenge&nbsp;for a third Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games next month if he is not selected to play in the doubles tournament, Britain's former world number one said.

The three-time Grand Slam winner and twice Olympic champion is eligible to compete in the singles at the Games with two places reserved for players who have previously won a Grand Slam or Olympics tournament.

However, Murray could miss out on the doubles in Paris with Britain set to send Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski instead.

"I need to see what happens with the Olympics," he told reporters after his 6-3 6-4 defeat to Marcos Giron at the Stuttgart Open on Tuesday (Jun 11).

Here's why former no. 1 Andy Murray may opt out of Paris Olympics 2024

Microsoft warns Russia is trying to undermine the Paris Olympics with fake news and violence fears, damaging the International Olympic Committee's image.&nbsp;

The operations utilise a powerful mix of fake videos, fictitious news stories, and AI-generated impersonations, including the faked voice of Hollywood star Tom Cruise.

"Russia is ramping up these slander campaigns against France and President Emmanuel Macron, the IOC, and the Paris Olympics," said Clint Watts, general manager of the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center, in a blog post Sunday (June 2).

"This disinformation campaign isn't new for Russia, but Microsoft warns their tactics are evolving. &nbsp;They're using old tricks alongside artificial intelligence, and these efforts could escalate as the Paris Olympics draw near," he added.

Two prolific Russian cyber-actor groups, Storm-1679 and Doppelganger, have pivoted operations over the past year to directly target the Olympics.

Their activities escalated in June 2023 with the release on Telegram of a feature-length fake documentary titled "Olympics Has Fallen."

Using AI-generated Tom Cruise impersonations, dazzling CGI, and a seemingly authentic marketing campaign to discredit the IOC, this elaborate effort aims to chip away at global enthusiasm for the Games.

Storm-1679 has also repeatedly manufactured and amplified fictionalised videos, news clips, and press statements falsely claiming that fears of terrorism have sparked a wave of ticket cancellations and property insurance purchases among Parisians.

Microsoft informed that it suspected that Russian groups were behind the circulation of forged graffiti images threatening a repeat of the 1972 Munich Olympic massacre of Israeli athletes by Palestinian militants.

As the July 26 Opening Ceremony looms, Microsoft predicts the Russian disinformation attack will intensify across more languages and media formats.

Notably, Macron in April said he had "no doubt" that Russia was targeting the Paris Olympics including with disinformation.

The Kremlin "is feeding every day the idea that we can't do this or that, that there's a risk," Macron said.

"Russia is ramping up these slander campaigns against France and President Emmanuel Macron, the IOC, and the Paris Olympics," said Clint Watts, general manager of the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center, in a blog post Sunday (June 2). They're using old tricks alongside artificial intelligence, and these efforts could escalate as the Paris Olympics draw near," he added. Two prolific Russian cyber-actor groups, Storm-1679 and Doppelganger, have pivoted operations over the past year to directly target the Olympics. Their activities escalated in June 2023 with the release on Telegram of a feature-length fake documentary titled "Olympics Has Fallen." Using AI-generated Tom Cruise impersonations, dazzling CGI, and a seemingly authentic marketing campaign to discredit the IOC, this elaborate effort aims to chip away at global enthusiasm for the Games. Microsoft uncovers Russian disinformation campaign targeting Paris Olympics

The International Boxing Association (IBA) said on Wednesday it would follow the example of track and field's global federation by paying prize money for medals at the Paris Olympics.

The IBA has made the move despite the fact that the boxing programme at the Paris Games will be run by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after the federation was stripped of the role because of concerns about its financial transparency.

The IBA, which is backed by Russian gas giant Gazprom, is going further than World Athletics, which is paying $50,000 to gold medallists, but nothing to the minor medallists at this year's Games.

The IBA says it will pay gold, silver and bronze medallists bonuses from a total budget of $3.1 million.

World Athletics' move has attracted criticism from other federations and IOC president Thomas Bach has distanced himself from the move.

In an interview with AFP in April, Bach said: "The international federations have to treat all their member federations and their athletes on an equal basis and to try to balance this gap between the privileged and the less or under-privileged."

Reigning Olympics champion,&nbsp;India's Neeraj Chopra has been injured just months before the start of the Paris Games. As a result, Chopra will be skipping Ostrava's Golden Spike meet, scheduled to start on May 28 after feeling 'something' in his adductor muscle during training.&nbsp;

The organisers on Sunday (May 26) issued a statement, informing about Neeraj's noticeable absence from the event in Czechia.&nbsp;

“The organisers did note a message from the Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra. Due to an injury that he sustained in training two weeks ago (adductor muscle) he will not be able to throw in Ostrava,” read the statement.

The 26-year-old said he didn't want to push his body&nbsp;so close to the quadrennial event and decided to skip the meet.&nbsp;

“I have had problems with it in the past and pushing it at this stage can lead to injury. Just to clarify, I am not injured but I don't want to take any risk during the Olympic year so had to take this decision. Once I feel it's fully recovered, I will get back to competitions,” said Neeraj.&nbsp;

The injury also puts in doubt Neeraj's presence at the&nbsp;Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, on June 18.&nbsp;Chopra won a silver in the 2022 edition with a throw of 89.30 metres.

Indian ace shuttler PV Sindhu went past top-seed Han Yae from China to qualify for the Malaysia Masters semifinals on Friday (May 24). Sindhu emerged on top of her Chinese opponent in the quarterfinal with a 21-13, 14-21, 21-12 win to make it to her maiden semifinals on the BWF tour in 2024. Given the 28-year-old has not been in great form of late, her progress into the last four bodes well in her preparations for Paris Olympics, in July-August.

Talking about her quarterfinal clash, Sindhu made a confident start with a lead in the opening game. While Han Yae made a strong comeback in the penultimate game, with a 21-14 win, Sindhu returned to her best in the final game to move ahead into the next round.

Sindhu will now face the winner of the other quarterfinal between Singapore’s Putri Kusuma Wardani and Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the semifinals. Ranked No.15 in the world, Sindhu will be desperate to win the Malaysian Masters. She is looking to win her maiden BWF title since winning the Singapore Open back in 2022. Since then, form and injury concerns have led to her downfall. However, the Indian star is trying her best to return to her consistent best with Paris 2024 just two months away.

India's Neeraj Chopra is surely eyeing to join javelin's elite 90-metre club but will happily settle for a shorter throw in the forthcoming Paris Olympics if it proves enough for him to retain his title at the mega event, stated his coach. The mega event kicks off in July 26 in France and all eyes are on the 26-year-old to win hearts once again with a memorable performance. Neeraj rose to fame in Tokyo 2020 by winning the&nbsp;gold medal in men's javelin event (India's first Olympic gold medal in athletics) with an impressive 87.58 metre throw. Since then, he has climbed up the ladder constantly but the elusive 90-metre mark evades him.

Following his Tokyo blitz, Neeraj became the world champion and even registered a personal best (PB) distance of 89.94 metre at the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022. However, he has been continuously&nbsp;asked about the 90-m mark. Nonetheless, his coach&nbsp;Klaus Bartonietz has affirmed that retaining his Olympic title remains Neeraj's top priority.&nbsp;

<h2>'The mark increases almost every year, but the medal stays'</h2>

Bartonietz told Reuters -- after the Doha Diamond League this weekend -- "A medal is more important than a mark. The mark increases almost every year, but the medal stays. Nobody asks Neeraj how far his throw reached in Tokyo. It was 87.58 and it was enough. If it's 85 metres and still gets you an Olympic gold, you should be okay with it."

It is to be noted that the 90 metre-mark has been surpassed a total of 125 times by 24 athletes since javelin was redesigned in 1986. Nonetheless, only three of those throws came during the Olympics.

Bartonietz said, "I'd be happy if Neeraj can produce his PB in Paris. It should be enough. It's one thing to throw 90 metres, and a totally different thing to do it in the most important competition in a four-year cycle."

Meanwhile, Neeraj kicked off his 2024 season with a second-place finish at the Diamond League in Doha on Friday (May 10),&nbsp;falling short&nbsp;of Jakub Vadlejch's winning throw of 88.38m by&nbsp;two centimetres.&nbsp;

Paris 2024 gold more important than 90m throw for Neeraj Chopra, says javelin star’s coach

Neeraj Chopra is gearing up for the Doha Diamond League, on Friday (May 10). However, his focus remains on the big prize -- i.e. the forthcoming Paris Olympics Games. The mega event will kick off on July 26 and all eyes will be on Neeraj to replicate his Tokyo 2020 heroics, where he rose to fame and became a household name with a gold medal in the men's javelin event.

As he continues to prepare for Paris 2024, Neeraj opined that the key to success for Indian athletes in the showpiece event, in July-August, will be maintaining their self-belief. It is to be noted that the European athletes had won 15 of the last 16 gold medals in the men's javelin event before Neeraj scripted history with a throw of 87.58 metres at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Thus, he became the first Asian man to clinch an Olympic javelin title. This time around, he will have to cope with the pressure to match his past success. However,&nbsp;Neeraj feels self-belief will be vital for his success, as well as for the entire Indian contingent&nbsp;in Paris.

<h2>'Anything is possible in Paris'</h2>

In an interview with Sports Authority of India (SAI) media, Neeraj said, "There was a time when I wasn't even sure of qualifying for the world championships, but see how times have changed."
&nbsp;
"In Budapest last year, we had three Indians (out of the top six) in the finals and that's made us believe we're no less than the Europeans, who have dominated world javelin for so long. We have to take this Budapest belief forward and in Paris anything is possible."

The 26-year-old will be joined by compatriot Kishore Jena in Paris, while DP Manu also has a chance of qualifying for this year's Olympics.&nbsp;

Thus, India has seen a rise in the number of javelin stars ever since Neeraj's Tokyo feat, proving that the belief and confidence among Indian athletes to conquer any sport is&nbsp;on the rise.

US track and field star Carl Lewis has pleaded that Noah Lyles be given some leeway as he heads into the Paris Olympics as a hot sprint favourite with a potential eye on four gold medals.

Lyles added another gold to his trophy cabinet by anchoring the US team to victory in the men's 4x100m on Sunday at the World Athletics relays in Nassau, where American quartets won four of five events raced as Olympic qualifiers.

The 26-year-old ensured he would be going to Paris with a target on his back after winning golds in the 100, 200 and 4x100m relay at last year's world championships in Budapest.

He followed up with two silvers at the world indoors in Glasgow in February, firstly beaten by teammate Christian Coleman in the 60m and then as a controversial last-minute member of the 4x400m relay team.

That call-up received wide criticism, with allegations of favouritism levelled at Lyles, even from teammate Fred Kerley.

But Lewis, one of the most decorated Olympian athletes with nine Summer Games golds, said that should now be treated as water under the bridge.

"I hope that he ignores it and moves on. All Noah's doing is what you're asking. He's a good kid, he's going to do very well," Lewis told a small group of journalists in Nassau.

"I don't have a problem with someone saying 'I want to win another gold medal for America'.

"I don't want him to get bogged down by silliness. It really is silly.

"It's not fair. He doesn't deserve it, let him do his thing."

Among Lewis' nine Olympic medals was a tally of four at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles when he won both sprints, was a member of the winning 4x100m relay team and also claimed victory in the long jump.

Thoughts of Lyles having a tilt at emulating a four-gold haul in Paris left Lewis musing.

"Trust me, it's hard enough to win three, period!" he said.

"It's really, really hard to do it. Let him focus on that. And if the relay pans out, that could be wonderful for the sport."

<h2>- Open field in the 100m -</h2>

But Lewis warned that recent changing faces in the 100m champion's chair meant there would be no shoo-in for victory in the blue riband event.

"Anyone can win it!" said the American who won a second 100m Olympic gold in Seoul in 1988 after Ben Johnson tested positive for doping, as well as three world titles (1983, 1987 -- again promoted due to Johnson's doping -- &nbsp;1991).

While Lyles won in Budapest last year, Kerley won at the Eugene worlds the year before, Italy's Marcell Jacobs having claimed the Olympic title and Coleman the 2019 world championships in Doha.

There was no sight of Coleman or Kerley in Nassau, but Jacobs joined Lyles in action at the Thomas A.Robinson Stadium in the capital of the Bahamas.

"You want to be on the team for the Olympics, you should be here," the outspoken Lewis said.

As for Lyles, the 62-year-old said: "Well, he's here and he should be. I think he understands it. He's running technically the best right now. That's why he's winning and he's doing a good job.

"I think the sport needs someone to be dominant... because the public like to attach to someone.

"When they win they're happy, when they lose they're sad. They want to go with the emotion of people. Right now there's no emotion to it, it's just like, who's going to win."

Lewis, one of only six Olympic athletes who&nbsp;won a gold medal in the same individual event&nbsp;in four consecutive Olympic Games -- in his case the long jump -- also warned against weight of expectation on a single athlete raising track and field's profile in general.

"It's much bigger than him and I don't think it's fair to be it on athletes," he said of Lyles, using Jamaican sprinting legend Usain Bolt as a comparison.

"Usain did a tremendous job but he didn't grow the sport," he said. "As much as he did, as big as he was, he still didn't grow the sport, sport financially went down during his tenure."

He's running technically the best right now. That's why he's winning and he's doing a good job. "I think the sport needs someone to be dominant... because the public like to attach to someone. "When they win they're happy, when they lose they're sad. They want to go with the emotion of people. Right now there's no emotion to it, it's just like, who's going to win." Lewis, one of only six Olympic athletes who won a gold medal in the same individual event in four consecutive Olympic Games -- in his case the long jump -- also warned against weight of expectation on a single athlete raising track and field's profile in general.

Since then, the 2032 Games have been awarded to Brisbane, Australia, and Bach told AFP in an interview at IOC headquarters on Friday that there were "double-digit" numbers of countries in the running for 2036.

"We have never been in such a favourable position. We have never seen such a high interest in hosting the Olympic Games," he said on Friday from his offices that overlook Lake Geneva.&nbsp;

He also stressed the importance of the ongoing revolution in artificial intelligence, which led the IOC to unveil a strategy last week to harness the computer technology to help athletes.

The Dubai rains have made headlines worldwide&nbsp;and have affected several people travelling to and from the city.&nbsp;Indian wrestlers Deepak Punia and Sujeet Kalakal&nbsp;also bore the brunt of the Dubai rains. The duo's&nbsp;chances of qualifying for the Paris Olympics hit a roadblock as they&nbsp;were left stranded at the Dubai International Airport due to unprecedented rains in the Gulf nation.

Deepak (86kg), who had come close to winning a medal at the previous Olympics in Tokyo, and Sujeet (65kg), were on their way to Bishkek to feature in the Asia Olympic qualifiers, i.e. the second-last qualifying event for Paris Olympics&nbsp;commencing on Friday (April 19). However, the Dubai rains have interrupted their plans severely. Notably, the country has experienced&nbsp;the heaviest recorded rainfall ever, leading to&nbsp;major highways and roads being flooded while&nbsp;the airports are&nbsp;also a complete&nbsp;mess.

Talking to PTI, Sujeet's father said, "They have been stuck at the Dubai airport since April 16 and it seems the chance of qualifying for the Paris Olympics is slipping out of their hands as they are scheduled to compete tomorrow. With less than four months to go before the start of the Paris Olympics,&nbsp;more controversies have taken centre stage&nbsp;after World Athletics President Sebastian Coe announced last week that gold medallists in Paris will each earn $50,000. The decision&nbsp;has not gone down well with many international associations. It has also been slammed by Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) President David Lappartient, who termed the initiative “against the Olympic spirit” ahead of the Games.

<h2>UCI President blasts WA</h2>

"We really believe that this is not the Olympic spirit," UCI President David Lappartient told reporters on the sidelines of the Paris Olympics torch lighting ceremony.

"The proposal (by World Athletics) was not discussed. It was (announced) on the day of our mother organisation's meeting. It should have been on the agenda," he added.

"The Olympic spirit is to share revenues and have more athletes compete worldwide. Not only put all the money on the top athletes but spread the money.

"If we concentrate money on top athletes, a lot of opportunities will disappear for athletes all over the world."

Currently, no association rewards athletes with prize money for winning an Olympic medal. However, last week World Athletics President Coe announced that athletes winning gold medals at the Paris Olympics will be rewarded with $50,000.&nbsp;While there will be no rewards for the silver and bronze medal winners in the Paris Olympics, the future plan includes rewarding them at the Los Angeles Games in 2028.

As things stand, WA will reward a $2.4 million prize pot to the 48 gold medallists in Paris. A total of $540 million was allocated to the 28 sports at the previous Games in Tokyo, with World Athletics receiving the most at $40 million.

<h2>Reason for backlash</h2>

The move to reward prize money was met with heavy criticism from other sporting associations due to pay parity which does not exist currently. Five-time Olympic rowing champion Steve Redgrave called it an unfair decision to other sports that cannot afford to do the same. While there is no protest and it is an independent decision from the WA, it is likely to be a hot topic of debate in the build-up to the Olympics.

The move will only spark more controversy in the 2026 Winter Olympics and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics when athletes will be rewarded for winning silver and bronze medals.

Paris Olympics: Cyclists association chief blasts 'against the spirit' prize money policy of world athletics

Australian boxing head coach Jamie Pittman has admitted to sexual misconduct towards female fighters and withdrawn from the upcoming Paris Olympics. The former professional boxer allegedly committed 11 offences during three separate trips with the boxing teams between July and October last year.

Australian boxing head coach Jamie Pittman has admitted to sexual misconduct towards female fighters and withdrawn from the upcoming Paris Olympics. The former professional boxer allegedly committed 11 offences during three separate trips with the boxing teams between July and October last year. The Combat Institute of Australia, acting on behalf of several elite boxers, levelled the accusations against Pittman and served him with a breach notice for abuse, bullying and sexual misconduct. Australia's National Sports Tribunal - an independent government body, heard the case against Pittman last month, the details of which were made public on Wednesday (Apr 17). “Once he [Pittman] considered the evidence, he didn’t want to cause any further stress or anxiety to the athletes who were preparing for the upcoming Olympic Games, withdrew his expression of interest to coach at those Games and accepted the breach,” the tribunal stated. "The body found Pittman's conduct ‘disgusting’, ‘shocking’, ‘inappropriate’, ‘gross’ and ‘offensive’.” “Common to nine of the 11 instances of prohibited conduct are inappropriate comments or conduct involving the sexual objectification of women that is puerile, infantile and lacking in sensitivity or awareness. Especially by someone of Mr Pittman’s seniority and standing in the boxing community who should be leading by example." Quizzed about the allegations, the Queenslander who represented Australia at the 2004 Olympics and 2002 Commonwealth Games, said he will not attend the Paris Games in July. "It's all in there for you to read," said Pittman. Also read | Paris Olympics: Cyclists association chief blast'against the spirit' prize money policy of world athletics Six-month ban recommended The tribunal has recommended a six-month ban on Pittman and written apologies to a team physiotherapist and at least two athletes. The 'disgraced' coach must also partake in a training course on anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, anti-bullying and anti-sexual misconduct within 60 days. Notably, in one of the incidents, Pittman took a photo of a female fighter from behind as she bent over and later showed it to another team member. In another shocking incident, Pittman is alleged to have said, "How f**king hot are some of the girls in here," at an October 2023 team camp in Italy and telling a fighter, "Yummy, yes please" when a female boxer walked past him. The Paris Olympics are less than four months away and the scandal has the potential to severely derail the momentum of fighters, experts said. (With inputs from agencies)

The torch for the 2024 Paris Olympics was lit in ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Olympics, in a traditional ceremony on Tuesday (Apr 16). The flame marks the final stretch of the preparations for the Games and will now begin its journey that culminates in the French capital when the fire cauldron at the Stade de France will be lit using the flame during the opening ceremony. The choreographed ceremony was inspired by the traditions and values of ancient Greece. Actresses dressed as ancient priestesses entered the stadium, accompanying the head priestess to the Temple of Hera where religious ceremonies were undertaken and the flame lit. Greek actress Mary Mina played the part of the head priestess and lit the torch using a backup flame instead of a parabolic mirror due to cloudy skies, for the start of a relay in Greece and France. "In these difficult times we are living through, with wars and conflicts on the rise, people are fed up with all the hate, the aggression and negative news they are facing day in and day out," International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said in his speech. "We are longing for something which brings us together, something that is unifying, something that gives us hope. The Olympic flame that we are lighting today is the symbol of this hope." The ceremony took place a day after French President Emmanuel Macron said backup plans were in place to relocate the opening ceremony in case of increased terror threats. Rezayee has called on the IOC to ban Afghanistan due to the Taliban's horrid human rights record. She added that under such a ban, Afghan women should still be allowed to participate as part of the IOC refugee Olympic Team. "Given tonnes and tonnes of evidence about the Taliban, about their brutal treatment of women and children, they are very dangerous," Rezayee was quoted as saying by Reuters. Taliban has heavily curtailed the human rights of its citizens, especially young girls and women, ever since taking over the country in 2021 after American troops left the country. In a major announcement made by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Friday (April 12), Mary Kom has decided to step down from her role as Paris Olympics Chef-de-Mission. The news was confirmed by IOA President PT Usha who will soon announce a replacement for the same. Mary Kom confirmed her desire to leave the position citing personal reasons and was “left with no choice” according to her statement.

"Embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, but I am left with no choice," said Kom to PTI.

Kom was appointed in her role in March 2024 and was set to mentor the Indian athletes on their way to the Paris Olympics. She was one of the obvious choices for the role having led the nation to an Olympic bronze in the 2012 London Games. Her connection with the athletes and being a female was the major reason for her appointment by the IOA in March.

"Mary Kom's unparalleled dedication to sports and inspiring journey makes her a natural choice to guide and mentor our athletes at the Olympics," IOA said.

"Keshavan, a former Olympian in luge, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to support the team's management and coordination efforts."

Her capacity as the Chef-de-Mission for the Paris Games included overseeing logistics, coordinating travel arrangements, liaising with the host country's Olympic organising committee, ensuring compliance with Olympic rules and regulations, handling any issues or disputes that may arise and providing support and guidance to athletes and team officials throughout the Games.

India is set for a big Paris Olympics contingent and considering the workload, Kom had a big responsibility in hand. India won seven medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics including a gold medal in Javelin Throw for Neeraj Chopra. Alongside Neeraj, India also won a silver medal in men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling by Ravi Kumar Dahiya while Mirabai Chanu also secured the same prize in Women's 49kg weightlifting. There were bronze medals for Lovlina Borgohain, PV Sindhu, the Indian hockey team and Bajrang Punia.

Considering the weight of the job at hand, PT Usha and Co will have a big task in hand to find a capable person to lead and mentor the contingent in Paris.

"Keshavan, a former Olympian in luge, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to support the team's management and coordination efforts." Her capacity as the Chef-de-Mission for the Paris Games included overseeing logistics, coordinating travel arrangements, liaising with the host country's Olympic organising committee, ensuring compliance with Olympic rules and regulations, handling any issues or disputes that may arise and providing support and guidance to athletes and team officials throughout the Games. ALSO READ | IPL 2024: Hussey on MS Dhoni’s impact on dressing room - ‘You feel like you're backed, trusted and loved’ India is set for a big Paris Olympics contingent and considering the workload, Kom had a big responsibility in hand.

India's Mary Kom steps down as Paris Olympics Chef-de-Mission due to personal reason

Apparel giant Nike’s On Air Event 2024 in Paris, France – the venue for the Summer Games in July, might have made headlines for obvious reasons, but it did irk a fan base that now calls for protest. Nike’s latest campaign was about unveiling kits for different sports, including track and field, basketball, soccer and skateboarding, to be donned by Team USA and other countries at the Summer Games in July-August.&nbsp;

With that said, they brought some of the top names from those sports during the event, including American star sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson, who was even part of the show where the athletes dressed in Nike casual wear and got onto the stage.&nbsp;

To make this event a success, Nike introduced athletes’ statues, including that of Richardson, Kylian Mbappe and basketball veteran LeBron James, ignoring the face of women's track and field over the years and another Nike athlete, Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, angering&nbsp;Jamaican fans who demanded a complete boycott of the brand later.

While those statues looked beautiful in Nike’s iconic orange colour, the fans could spot a certain miss in that, with them taking to social media to express their disappointment.&nbsp;

What further irked Fraser Pryce’s fans is the social media post of Richardson in collaboration with Whoop – a wearable tech firm whose primary product is a fitness tracker, where she is spotted wearing an all-green attire, resembling Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce’s dress she wore during an endorsement for Richard Mile campaign last year.
