India’s ace hurdler Jyothi Yarraji finished her season in style with a hat-trick of medals at the National Games. The icing on the cake was the fact that Jyothi rewrote the meet record in the women’s 100m hurdles event, winning gold by clocking a time of 13.22s. Jyothi also won gold in the 4x100m relay event with Andhra Pradesh. Her third medal came in the 200m event, where she won bronze with a time of 23.95s in the final.

Tejas Shirse lived up to his billing of pre-tournament favourite by clinching gold in style in the men’s 110m hurdles event. In a dominant display, Tejas rewrote the meet record in the event by crossing the finish line in 13.71s.

RF athletes made a big splash at the National Games, Goa 2023, winning a total of 30 medals in seven different sports. The final medal tally comprised 15 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze medals in a splendid and medal-laden display from start to finish. Over 40 athletes from RF took part in seven sports at the prestigious competition.

Speaking about the fine display, James Hillier, Athletics Director at RF, said, “We are really pleased with the results at the National Games. For many of our athletes, it was the last competition of the year in a very long season. They started in April, so to sustain that level of excellence for seven months is a very impressive feat.

“It was pleasing to not just see the medals but our athletes also registered their personal bests. It has been a good end to a very successful season for us. It gives us the perfect springboard for next season. The next year is a big year with the Olympics, we are excited and looking forward to it. We’ll be looking to get our best athletes into the Paris Olympics squad.”

Asian Games medalist Gulveer Singh won gold in the 5000m event in a time of 14:13.03s. Gulveer backed up his Gold with a bronze in the men’s 10000m event to complete a long distance double. Sprinter Elakkkiyadasan won a brace of medals, winning gold in both the men’s 100m and men’s 4x100m relay.

Javelin thrower Kishore Kumar Jena, who has already sealed a spot at the Paris Olympics next year, won bronze with a best throw of 78.47m. Pole vaulter Baranica Elangovan also finished her season on a high with gold by clearing a height of 3.90m.

The other individual medalists from RF in athletics were Swadhin Majhi (bronze, men’s high jump), Graceson Jeeva (silver, men’s 110m hurdles), Moumita Mondal (bronze, women’s long jump), Dhanvir Singh (silver, men’s shot put) and Animesh Kujur (bronze, men’s 200m).

Niraj Kumar and Nancy added to the medal haul in shooting by winning silver in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions and women’s 10m air rifle events respectively.

There were three medals in archery as well with Mrinal Chauhan winning Gold in the men’s team event and silver in the mixed team event in the recurve category. Ridhi also won gold in the women’s team event in the recurve category.

Ridhi was delighted with her efforts: "It was a proud moment for me to compete in my first National Games. It was my childhood dream to win a medal in the National Games. It gives me a lot of confidence for upcoming tournaments. It's one of the biggest medals of my career and a much-needed confidence boost. As my experience is increasing, so are my targets. When I was young, I would get a chocolate for hitting a ten. My ultimate goal is to win gold for India at the Olympics," she said.

One of the biggest moments of the Games featured Reetika Hooda, the young wrestler from Haryana, fresh from her world Under 23 Championship victory, the first ever for India, defeated Olympian Divya Kakran 10-0 in the finals to clinch the National Games gold in a breathtaking display.

With 22 medals, Indian shooters were at their fluent best to help India reach the 100-medal tally at the Asian Games, being a prime contributor to the nation’s overall success. Part of that contingent was Haryana’s Palak Gulia, who clinched gold and silver medals to wave the nation’s flag overseas in China.

Palak sat down with WION’s Aditya Pimpale in an exclusive chat on Saturday (Oct 7) as she reflected on her astonishing journey. India’s shooting team won seven gold, nine bronze, and six bronze medals with Palak winning two of those in 10 metre pistol’s event in both individual and team events.

How did you cherish the moment when the Indian flag was hoisted in China after winning the gold medal in the 10m pistol?

It was the proudest moment in my life to see the national flag get hoisted up after winning the gold medal. I could not control my emotions in the moment as my dream came true to see myself with a gold medal at the Asian Games.

How inspiring is Neeraj Chopra, someone who you saw closely at the Asian Games?

I have always drawn inspiration from Neeraj Chopra ever since he won the Olympic gold medal. I was really looking forward to meeting him in the Hangzhou Games village, but unfortunately, it did not happen because of a tight travel schedule. But he has always been a big inspiration for me and I am looking forward to meeting him in the future.

What was the role of your parents in your epic journey to glory?

My parents have always supported me in every walk of my sporting career, whether it was migrating from a small town like Jhajjar to Gurgaon or traveling with me during the tournaments. I have always enjoyed their support and without them, this journey wouldn’t have been possible.

What was the role of the backroom team that prepared you for an occasion like this?

I am also thankful to a big team that works behind me as the Reliance Foundation helped me during my rehabilitation from a shoulder injury last year. My nutritionist played a key role in helping me balance my diet during my travels. It is not always possible to get the same diet everywhere I travel, so they play a key role in getting things done for me. My rehabilitation process was carried out smoothly with the support of the Reliance Foundation.

What are your goals for the time to come, knowing you won’t be competing at the Olympics?

The Olympics are always the dream for anyone associated with a sport, although I missed out on the qualification for Paris, my focus is always on giving my best shot. Currently, I am setting a short-term targets and fulfilling those which could see me get better prepared for future events.

How was your chemistry with Esha and Divya especially competing with them and against them in different events?

Me, Divya, and Esha are roommates during the international tour so there is a great chemistry we have developed over the years. Winning gold was always the target but to compete against someone you know closely is a different feeling altogether. I did not start on a high in the final, but then I recovered to see off competition from Esha, whom I know very well. Winning the silver medal in the team’s event came the icing on the cake as I was delighted for another podium finish.

What is your aim for the future, considering you are already shining high at the age of 17?

My aim is always to do my best in the finals rather than the qualification; I somehow try to keep my best for the finals. I love playing in the finals of the big events that have seen me rise in recent years.

Starting the day with 69 medals, India equalled their previous best after race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo won the bronze medal in the 35km race walk mixed team event. History was scripted when Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Pravin Ojas Deotale won gold in the Compound Archery Mixed Team event and took India’s tally to 71 medals in the Asian Games. This saw India record their best tally in the Asian Games.

So far, at the time of writing, India has bagged 16 gold, 27 silver, and 31 bronze medals which totals 74 medals overall. This is India’s joint-best gold medal tally, having equaled the 2018 record in Jakarta while the 27 silver medals are also the best they have achieved in the games. In terms of bronze medals, India still needs six medals to surpass their 2014 Incheon tally where they amassed 36.

India’s Boxing team and Rowing team come next with five medals each while there have been three medals each in Sailing and Squash. India also won historic medals in women’s cricket, Equestrian, Wushu, and other events.

With the men’s cricket team and Neeraj Chopra in Javelin Throw yet to spark magic, India could be on the rise in the overall medals. India still needs 26 medals to achieve the 100-medal mark with four days still to go before the closing ceremony of the games on Sunday (Oct 8).&nbsp;

In a blockbuster morning for India on day six of the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, young Indian shooters Palak Gulia and Esha Singh shone in the women’s 10m air pistol individual event, winning gold and silver medals, respectively.

Palak, all of 17, took up shooting after the Jakarta Asiad. She left everyone in awe with her calm and composed approach, jumping straight to the top of the board during the final eight on Friday (Sep 29) morning.

She broke an Asian Games record in her quest to bag an individual gold medal, securing 242.1 points.

Another Indian, Esha Singh, stood second on the standings with 239.7 points, 2.6 points behind the winner, with Pakistan's Kishmala Talat winning the bronze medal, recording 218.2 points.&nbsp;

Esha’s silver medal increased her medal tally to four at the ongoing Asian Games, having won a silver medal in 10m air pistol, gold in 25m pistol and an individual silver in 25m pistol before.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, the duo, alongside TS Divya won the silver medal in the women’s 10m air pistol team event, with 1731 points.&nbsp;

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the women's team on the win.

<h2>Indian men’s team shine in shooting</h2>

While the women shooters were making headlines on Friday morning, the men’s team in the rifle 3P event also clinched the gold medal, putting India’s shooting contingent on top. The trio of Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Swapnil Kusale and Akhil Sheoran had the last laugh, claiming the top spot with a world record.&nbsp;

They recorded 1769 points, eight more than the previous record set by the United States in 2022 at the CAT championships.

Outside of the men’s and women’s shooting teams hogging all spotlight for their impressive show, the Indian Tennis duo of Saketh and Ramkumar fought for their dream of winning the gold in the Tennis men’s doubles event but fell short. The Indian pair lost to Chinese Taipei pair Jason and Hsu in straight sets (6-4, 6-4), settling for the silver medal.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the Indian women’s team won the bronze medal in squash as Hong Kong beat India 3-0.&nbsp;
