India slams Pakistan in UNGA, New Delhi questions Islamabad's 'dubious record'

It was a war of words between India and Pakistan at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday (May 3). India clapped back at Pakistan's remarks about "New Delhi's targeted assassinations in Pakistan." Addressing the UNGA session, Pakistan’s UN envoy Munir Akram claimed that this "extra-territorial state terrorism (from India)" was not limited to Pakistan. "This has been targeted to killings of political opponents in Canada and attempted in the United States (US), and probably in other countries," Munir claimed. He cited a report from The Washington Post that talked about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing a recent political rally where he said, "‘This is Modi; This is New India which attacks after entering into territories of enemies." Also read | PM Modi targets Congress party after Pakistan leader's 'Rahul on fire' comment "This new India is a dangerous entity. It is a net provider of insecurity, not security," Munir added. India's sharp response to Pakistan at UN Responding to Munir's remarks, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, said that even amid challenging times, New Delhi’s focus remains steadfast on constructive dialogue. “We thus choose to set aside the remarks from a certain delegation [Pakistan], which not only lack decorum but also detract from our collective efforts due to their destructive and pernicious nature,” Kamboj said. "...The country’s myriad languages, dialects and cuisines, alongside its rich tapestry of races, colors and landscapes, contribute to the resilience and richness of our composite culture..." - PR at UN General Assembly today on Agenda item: 'Culture of Peace' pic.twitter.com/UrT5mLopRq — India at UN, NY (@IndiaUNNewYork) May 2, 2024 × "We would strongly encourage that delegation to align with the essential principles of respect and diplomacy that must always guide our discussions or is that too much to ask of a country that harbours a most dubious track record on all aspects in itself," she added, without naming Pakistan. Kamboj further said that terrorism stands in direct opposition to the culture of peace, and sows discord, and breeds hostility. She called it essential for member states to work together to nurture a genuine culture of peace. 'New India kills terrorists on their home turf' Last month, Prime Minister Modi said at a Lok Sabha election campaign rally in the northern state of Rajasthan that the country was now a "new India" that struck within enemy territory- an apparent reference to counterstrikes in Pakistan after terror attacks in India. "New India kills them [terrorists/enemies] on their home turf," Modi said at the rally in Churu. At an election rally in Gujarat, Modi on Wednesday (May 1) reiterated his statement by saying, "Ten years ago, the country was suffering due to terrorism. However, Congress, despite knowing the origin of terrorism, used to send a dossier to Pakistan. Today, India doesn't send dossiers to the masters of terrorism, but kills them on their home turf!"

A former Pakistani minister and a close aide of former PM Imran Khan has launched a legal fight against Islamabad after an acid attack left him “scarred for life” in the UK. The acid attack took place in November last year as Shahzad Akbar opened his door to a caller at his home in England’s Royston town. He was lucky enough to not lose his eyesight, something he owes to wearing glasses and slamming the door shut in time. Akbar has sought refuge in Britain after he led efforts to shore up his former boss at home, who was toppled from power two years ago.

Shahzad Akbar alleges that Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI was behind the acid attack.

He was rushed to hospital and treated for burns on his head and one arm. He was quoted by news agency The Independent as saying, “The physical wounds have healed. The psychological ones go deeper.”

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who is Pakistan's leading right-wing Islamic leader, made a comparison between New Delhi and Islamabad, in a way, thrashing his nation for "begging to avoid bankruptcy". While addressing a session of the National Assembly on Monday (Apr 29), Maulana Fazlur Rehman , the chief of his faction, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), asked fellow lawmakers: "In August 1947, India and Pakistan got Independence together. Today, India is dreaming of becoming a global superpower, while we are begging to avoid bankruptcy. Who is responsible for this?" Cash-strapped Pakistan has been reeling under a severe economic crisis for more than two years, with last year marred with political instability. At one point, inflation in the country was nearly 38 per cent. In February 2023, its foreign currency reserves depleted to $3 billion. On the other side, as highlighted by Rehman, India has been forging ahead with strong economic growth and is aiming to become world's third largest economy in the coming years, with the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) on Monday highlighting that the Indian economy is expected to achieve "higher" than 7 per cent growth in 2024-25. A Pakistani judge was abducted on Saturday (Apr 27) by armed men in the restive province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The district and sessions judge was returning from duty when he was kidnapped near Tank and Dera Ismail (DI) Khan district bordering Afghanistan. News agency AP quoted police officer Faheem Khan as saying that around 15 men on bikes followed Shakirullah Marwat’s vehicle as he was travelling towards DI. Before fleeing with the judge, they set the car on fire. The driver of the car was not harmed in the incident, as per media reports.

No one has claimed responsibility for the act yet but the Pakistani Taliban, or TTP, are most likely to get blame.

It’s a rare attack as militants hardly target judges and most often stage attacks on police and security personnel in Pakistan.

Faheem Khan said a search operation, with help from a counter-terrorism team, has been launched to find the whereabouts of the judge.

Reacting to the incident, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Central Information Secretary Faisal Karim Kundi blamed the provincial government for "non-seriousness" in governance and maintenance of law and order.

The fiber optic cable connecting Singapore to Pakistan and Europe was destroyed near Indonesia at various locations, impacting internet service in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
