The Afghan Taliban government has cancelled the visit of a Pakistani government delegation to Kandahar, which was scheduled on Sunday. The visit, details of which are clearly unavailable until the filing of this story, is shrouded in mystery. Kandahar is the ideological capital of the Taliban movement where its Emir currently resides. According to a document dated 07th of May 2024 from the Pakistani Embassy in Kabul, a copy of which is available with WION, “An official delegation of the government of Pakistan” was to travel to Kandahar. The Taliban government on background maintains that the visit was cancelled following “airstrikes by Pakistan on 10th of May in Paktika”. Officials say that Pakistan used drones to target a “Tashkil of TTP”, a fighting unit of the banned terror outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan which Islamabad has long been alleging, is operated from Afghanistan, an allegation which Afghanistan denies. Sources say that at least four terrorists were killed in the Pakistani action that was conducted in the wee hours of the 10th of May, across the border. No official confirmation could be obtained on the veracity of the strikes. Earlier this year, Pakistan officially acknowledged having targeted the TTP hideouts across the border on the 18th of March 2024.

According to ARY News, Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is prepared for a conversation with Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Rana Sanaullah, the Prime Minister's (PM) Adviser on Political and Public Affairs, made the announcement during an interview with Pakistan's local news station. Rana Sanaullah underlined the importance of a conversation with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claiming that unconditional discussions are the only way ahead and the sole alternative for resolving concerns and creating a conducive environment. He stated that the PTI is an undeniable truth, but "Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari are also a reality." According to ARY News, Sanaullah added that if the debate is political, political parties should be included, and institutions can also participate in the next phase of the dialogue. He emphasised that the involvement of institutions in the discourse is critical to success. Notably, PTI founder Imran Khan, who is now serving a sentence at Adiala Jail, has rejected 'any deal to seek his release' and has urged the courts to expedite hearings in his cases. While speaking with reporters in Adiala Jail, Imran Khan emphasised that those who wish to leave the nation, such as Asif Zardari and Nawaz Sharif, make deals. He stated that for the previous 18 months, he has been prepared for dialogue but not for a deal. Imran Khan went on to say that he had formed a three-member dialogue team and that no former general had expressed an interest in holding discussions. "We are ready to hold talks with everyone, except three political parties - PML-N, PPP, and MQM-P," he stated. Moreover, the former prime minister asserted that dialogue occurs with adversaries, and PTI's most formidable adversaries are the ones with whom dialogue will be initiated, according to ARY News. PoK protests | PoK PM Anwarul Haq bends after violent clashes

Pakistan's illegal occupation of the territories of India's Jammu and Kashmir has snowballed into a widespread public unrest. Pakistani authorities have launched a massive crackdown to quell the protests that have taken over the occupied region right across Line of Control.

So far, a police officer has been killed while 90 others are reported injured in the fresh clashes.

"Deeply concerned about the situation in AJK. Unfortunately in situations of chaos and dissent there are always some who rush in to score political points. While debate, discussion and peaceful protests are the beauties of democracy , there should be absolutely no tolerance for taking the law in one's own hands and damaging government properties," Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif wrote on X.

"I have spoken to PM AJK and also directed all PML-N office bearers in AJK to talk to the leaders of the action committee and I urge all parties to resort to peaceful course of action for resolution of their demands. Despite best efforts of detractors, the matter will hopefully be settled soon," he added.

Taliban regime on Wednesday (May 8) strongly refuted claims made by Pakistan that Afghanistan was involved in a March suicide attack on Chinese nationals working in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Taliban said the claims were “irresponsible and far from the reality.”

The March 26 suicide attack killed five Chinese nationals on the site of a hydropower project in the Dasu region. Pakistan military on Tuesday (May 7) claimed that the attack was planned in neighbouring Afghanistan.

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Army told reporters that his nation had "solid evidence" that militants used Afghan soil to plan the attack. He also accused the Taliban of not addressing Pakistan's concerns as more than 60 security personnel have been killed so far in 2024 in Pakistani regions bordering Afghanistan.

Taliban also said that the attack on the Chinese workers showed how weak are Pakistani security agencies.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday (May 8) ordered the transfer of former prime minister Imran Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, from the Banigala residence to Adiala Jail, her lawyer said.

In her petition to the Islamabad HC, Bibi accused the authorities of violating her privacy and serving contaminated food in her home cell.

She and her lawyers also said that the Banigala residence, which had been declared a sub-jail, was dominated by men. The prison staff has denied the claims.

Bibi further accused the authorities of detaining her in one room at Khan's hilltop mansion in Islamabad. The couple has been detained since January conviction on charges of illegally selling state gifts.

As per local reports, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb pronounced the verdict, which was reserved on May 2 after hearing arguments of both parties.

It is pertinent to mention that the visit will be seen in light of the recent Saudi-Pak engagements which have seen an uptick since the new government in Pakistan took charge.

Sources said that the final dates of the visit of the Saudi Crown Prince are being worked out and that a definite travel date is likely to be communicated from the Saudi side to Pakistan in the coming week.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have longstanding fraternal relations rooted in religious and cultural affinity and the two have been committed to advancing the fraternal ties and mutually rewarding economic and investment relations.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia engagements in recent weeks have been at their peak and started with the visit of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the kingdom in March, followed by a high-level delegation from Saudi Arab being sent to Pakistan headed by the Saudi Foreign Minister in mid of April which was then followed by another visit by Pakistani Prime Minister to Saudi Arabia for the World Economic Forum.

Saudi Arabia also sent its high-level investment delegation to Pakistan to explore avenues of investment in the country. A Pakistani ministerial delegation comprising of Minister for Petroleum and Energy will also be heading to Saudi Arabia later this week.

The visit of the Saudi Crown Prince would focus on investments in Pakistan with Islamabad trying to materialise the understanding from the meeting in Makkah of attracting a Saudi investment in the country worth $5 billion.

Though both sides would emphasise that the visit is bilateral, there is no denying the fact that it comes amid tensions in West Asia, with Iran President Ebrahim Raisi being in Pakistan recently.

Sources said that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to stay in the country and overlook the arrangements for the big visit himself and not travel abroad until the visit is over. Confirmation of sorts of this claim was corroborated when Pakistan’s prime minister dropped his plan of travelling to Gambia for the OIC Summit at the 11th hour despite earlier deciding in favour of it as it was confirmed by the Pakistani foreign office in its weekly briefing. Later, the Foreign Office said that the change in the prime minister's plan was due to "domestic considerations".

Pakistan saw its "wettest April since 1961" with rainfall measuring 59.3 millimetres, more than double the usual average of 22.5 millimetres for the month, according to the country's meteorological department. The report also noted at least 144 fatalities from thunderstorms and house collapses caused by the heavy rain, marking it as the "wettest April since 1961."

Pakistan is having more and more trouble with unpredictable weather, especially the heavy rain that usually comes during monsoon season in July.

In 2022, huge monsoon rains flooded a third of Pakistan during the summer. These floods made millions of people leave their homes and caused about $30 billion in damage and losses for the country, according to the World Bank.

"Climate change is a major factor that is influencing the erratic weather patterns in our region," Zaheer Ahmad Babar, spokesperson for the Pakistan Meteorological Department, told AFP while commenting on the report.

While many parts of Asia are experiencing extreme heatwaves, Pakistan's average national temperature for April was recorded at 23.67 degrees Celsius (74 degrees Fahrenheit), which is 0.87 degrees lower than the usual average of 24.54, as highlighted in the report.
